CHANGING HANDS Crank Handle Fires Up

W

hen asked why the boys got into Crank Handle Brewery, the answer was pretty simple “We love beer and we love making beer!” And so it would appear. The older brother Craig King has been making beer at home for seven years, learning all the time, perfecting the finished result, and, of course donating a bit for the rellies to taste test. The operation was loosely termed the Nano Brewery from the shed out the back in Tawonga and then four years ago Trevor decided he would like to get involved – and so quite a bit of time and fun was had – learning and improving the beer the two brothers were making out the back. Then, the fabulously set-up Crank Handle Brewery in Tawonga South came on the market – a chance too good to pass up and the boys and their families are now proud owners of a great business brewing beers and looking after their fabulous patrons. Those years of making beer at home have proven invaluable and the range and varying tastes gives the brewery a comprehensive selection to choose from. Alpine Ale, Kell’s Kolsch, Ginger Beer, Extra Pale Ale, Porter and English Special Bitter. Craig didn’t like the general Ginger Beer on the market so he made his own. The boys also do a monthly ‘tap special’ – an Espresso Dunkel (a dark lager). An addition to the brewery is now the bottling on site – each of the beers available in 330mm bottles, each with their own distinctive labelling – with each batch usually selling out in the week. Another little trick is the one or two litre ‘Growlers’ that you can purchase full of your favourite beer, enjoy it at home, then bring the Growler back for a re-fill. Or, you can take it to other breweries to pick up a taste of their product.

The operating hours of Crank Handle have been extended a bit, now trading Thursday and Monday serving drinks and snacks. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are devoted to drinks and meals. Daily hours are 11am to 9pm (to 8pm Sundays). The kitchen is open daily from 12:30pm to 7:30pm. As much product as possible is sourced locally, e.g. the meat coming from the great butcher next door, Will at Tawonga South Butchery. Bread is coming from Tawonga Bakery. Crank Handle also offers a range of Delz Otto wines (King Valley), Nightingale Ciders, (Wandiligong), Corowa Whisky and Bilsons Vodka and sodas (Beechworth). To date the operation has been a success and with plans afoot for expansion things are looking good for many years to come. The beers are certainly a winner.

Young talent with heaps of experience making beer – Trevor King (lft) and brother Craig. Pic – Ken Bell

Crank Handle Brewery is located at 211 Kiewa Valley Highway, Tawonga South (Opposite The Park and Rocky Valley Bike Shop). Phone is 03 5754 4443. •

It would be remiss of your journo if we didn’t identify the families and thank them for their support of the business. Trev and returned to his home town with lovely wife Kiera and the new bub Hendrix. Craig has been hiding away in Tawonga with Stacey and the three children, Zeke, Laila and young CJ (Craig Junior). Welcome to the new business and we look forward to calling in for the odd quiet one – or two!

RUOK? Come out of the smoke community picnic.

T

he last two years have been a trying time for Upper Kiewa Residents. First, we went through the anxiety of the 2019/2020 bushfires, with many people leaving the area for safer places and those who remained preparing for a potential fire in our valley. Then the Covid crisis came with its associated lockdowns and worries about whether we might get cases here.

the second at 1pm) on their predictions for the next fire season, preparing your property for future fires, and answering any questions you may have.

In the middle of this year the Centre started planning RUOK? events – but these also could not be held until now.

Mount Beauty CFA will bring one of their fire trucks, and local SES volunteers have been invited to talk about their valuable work. Free bags with emergency information and other treats will be handed out, including three ‘emergency-go-away tubs’ that three lucky prize-winners can pack into the boot of their car during the next emergency.

At last, the Centre feels it can combine the two events to hold a RUOK? Come Out of the Smoke Community Picnic at Mount Beauty’s Bicentennial Park on Saturday 27th November between 10am – 2pm.

Soon after the fires – but just before Covid – the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre started planning for a community

New Bub (1)

New Bub (2)

ongratulations to Erica and Matthew Zagorski on the birth of the first child, daughter Avery Jane Zagorski who was born on 3rd November 2021 at 5:01pm at the Summit Medical Centre in Frisco, Colorado, USA, at 2770m above sea level – just on 748 metres higher than our Big Fella!

The ‘This Week’ family has grown! Simone and Wesley Dowel, along with their daughter Harriet, welcomed Charlie Francis to the world on the 1st October at Wodonga Hospital, weighing a very healthy 3990g. Mum and dad are over the moon, as is Harriet who adores her baby brother and is often heard telling people "My Charlie is my best friend"!

C

Erica also works at Summit Medical Centre as a nurse in the Emergency Department. Matt is currently working at Keystone Ski Resort as a Ski Patrol Supervisor – after several years as a patroller in Falls Creek. Matt and Erica did back to back winters between Falls Creek and Colorado for five years before settling in Colorado USA yearround for the last three years. The couple married at Keystone Ski Resort on the 6th December 2017. •

Simone is the lovely intelligent lady who does the digital stuff for the newspaper. Congratulations on the arrival of young Charlie – which is making your Ed feel like a grand-dad! • The Dowel family, Simone, Harriet and Wes with new son Charlie. Pic – Danii Forde

WHAT'S ON IN 2021

OUR COMMUNITY Remembrance Day 2021

R

emembrance Day marks the end of fighting on the Western Front on November 11, 1918.

At the time, the anniversary was known as Armistice Day, in reference to the formal agreement the German leaders signed to end the war. The name was changed to Remembrance Day after World War II ended in 1945. It has since become a day to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have died since World War I. Every year, one minute of silence is held at 11am (local time) on November 11. The red poppy has been a symbol of remembrance and hope since World War I. In the barren, muddy battlefields of Western Europe, the bright red flowers grew in their thousands. The sight of the resilient poppies inspired Canadian doctor Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae to write the poem In Flanders Fields, which gave its name to the now iconic Flanders poppy. That poem, in turn, inspired American professor Moina Michael to wear a red poppy and raise money for veterans. The practice soon spread in allied countries, including Britain, France, Canada and Australia and remains today. Whilst COVID-19 has made life a little difficult around here, it’s obviously not as difficult as some of our diggers experienced. (Think of that when you decide to vax – or not! Ed) Therefore and official Remembrance Day service has not been organised, several members will be at the Cenotaph to lay a wreath and piper Barry will be there. Residents and Community Groups are able to place a wreath or floral tribute at the Cenotaph after 11am with due consideration of the current COVID-19 restrictions. •
