FROM THE CEO Righty-ho… now that’s sorted, we can get on to other important stuff. With sunny days and crisp nights, a word of warning… watch where you step. Black ice is lethal. No one wants to accidently ‘double Mctwist 1260,’ or if you’re a Scotty James fan a ‘switch backside double cork 1260,’ unless you’re in the terrain park… So be careful out there – “if it’s shiny, you’ll slip!” A pair of boot chains are a worthwhile investment, certainly cheaper than the alternative trip to the medical centre (and a little less embarrassing too). Another tip on these delightfully (if somewhat over done) sunny days, is don’t forget to slap on the sunblock, but also don’t be fooled into thinking it’s warm. Make sure you rug up and layer up. The wind-chill is as deceptive as the black ice… it can be bitingly cold and penetrates the best gear if you don’t layer appropriately. With retail therapy outlets everywhere (https://www.fallscreek.com.au/retailoutlets/) and a few more in Slalom Plaza, you’ll find all you might have forgot to pack, or thanks to those COVID kilo’s, some replacements for that gear that just don’t fit anymore! On that note… Foodie Tip of the Week – Nelse Lodge Nelse sits nestled on the village green (next to the big Xmas tree) and is easily accessible from all aspects of the village. A favourite of the locals, with its gorgeous fireplace, welcoming lounges and resident lap warmer - Ralphie, not to mention the newly expanded deck on a sunny day, is the perfect spot to catch up with friends. This year Nelse are running a revolving two course menu of nightly food (https://nelse. com.au/eat-and-drink/). We booked in for steak night (Saturdays). Do yourselves a favour… the eye fillet with winter roasted vegetables and choice of sauces, was cooked

medium rare to perfection. The usual dining banter with our boys, took second place to the food! Just outstanding. Now, if you’ve got V/VG/GF-ers in your party… don’t worry, there’s matching choices for them too! Hint: the steak was beautifully matched with a 92 point shiraz - available by the glass (or bottle)! Dessert – for mine, Affogato just seals off a great feed, but the selection of winter favourites will provide something for everyone.

disappoint. A new favourite of our boys, the Nelse Nachos (with special cheese!) – it’s a generous serve, which two people will just get through. The pumpkin and feta, with pesto aioli Aranchini balls… one plate won’t be enough… they’re delicious. Martin, Genevieve and their crew are gracious hosts. Book now: 03 5758 3263 https://nelse.com.au/. Now, slip on the sunscreen, slap on the skis and get out there! •

THE LOVE OF SKIING The Ski Suit of Salvation

T

here once was a girl who liked to ski. She grew up skiing & playing in the snow. She loved the weekend trips to her mountain; the winding drives up the hill. The freezing cold temperatures pulling on ski clothes and boots in the car park. The icy water when washing her hands after visiting the bottom freezing toilets in the car park. The feel of her frozen ponytail slowly dripping down her back and of her nose defrosting when she went in for lunch. Even the black bin bags with arm and head holes cut out her dad would make her wear on sleety rainy ski days because the tickets had already been paid for (it was Australia after all and the 1980’s. Bin bags when skiing in the rain, it was a thing).

As she grew from a girl to a woman, she skied less and less. Being an adult meant getting a serious job, not a job at the snow. Plus, lift tickets were unexpectedly pricey when you had to pay for them yourself. So, the woman skied less and less as she got older. Slowly she got sadder and sadder but didn’t know why. One day, she saw an 1950’s green woollen Bogner ski suit for sale. It called to her. This beautiful green ski suit said “I know you adore me and I remind you of something you used to love. Being a grown up shouldn’t mean giving up doing things you hold dearest.” The woman suddenly thought “Who am I kidding, I have to go skiing! Being an adult doesn’t mean I have to give up doing things that make me happy!” That night the woman booked herself a trip to the snow and that weekend set off to go skiing. That weekend, the woman skied for the first time in years. She whooped with joy as she sped down the slopes. She grinned

with happiness while chatting to people on the chair lifts. She silently cheered herself on when she got air on jumps and bounced through the moguls. She felt joy return to her soul when breathing in the crisp mountain air and listening to the squeak of fresh snow under her skis.

In the days that followed her ski trip, she felt a contentment that had been missing since she was a girl. So, the woman went back to the shop with the old green ski suit in its window. The suit said, “how do you feel?” …and the woman replied, “like me.” The woman bought the green ski suit and hung it in her wardrobe where she would always see it at home so she would always remember the power of doing what you love and the pure unfettered joy of snow. The end. This story is a homage to, and with inspiration from, Edward Monkton’s “The Shoes of Salvation.” •

If you have seen a group of fit young people wearing green and gold it is because Falls Creek has been hosting the National Senior and Junior Team Cross Country Ski Team training camp. National team coach and Mount Beauty local Valerio Leccardi has been helped for the week by Czech coach David Vandis. The 13 athletes have come from Vic, NSW and ACT to work on technique drills as most of the team members have not skied much in the last year due to Covid restricting travel and competition. Conditioning and race preparation are also big parts of the camp as many of the athletes look towards qualifying and competing in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, only seven months away. If your racing aspirations are a smidge more modest than the next Olympics, then consider having a crack at one of the many races at Falls Creek this winter. Below is this year’s racing calendar for Falls Creek with the contact details of the race director.

HOLIDAY MEMOIRS From the Professionals

W

hat makes a good photo? Well there-in lays a good question. A good photo is a good piece of art. A good piece of art does not come easy and a good photo usually takes a little more than your happy snap ‘selfie’ on your phone. Composition is critical. You all know the old shot of the family with that telephone pole growing out of dad’s head. Or the group shot with number one daughter looking the other way. Yup, everyone has a phone (with a camera in it), but what gets you the best shots. Background is important. Backlighting can make your subject dark. And there is another little aspect to taking photos in the snow that takes a little getting used to. It is the incident light. Normally all light comes down (from the sun), but in the snow there is much more incident light – light reflecting from the snow and changing the natural and recognised accepted shadows that we are all used to. Taking your family photo in the snow with your phone may work – but it may not!

Good Hearty meals in 2021.

A shot you won’t get on your phone is you and your family and or friends riding Halley’s Comet with a snow covered Spion Kopje in the background. Pic – Mike @ Top Shots

You have made a fair effort to get to the snow and enjoy the fabulous outdoors. Wouldn’t it be great to go home with at least a couple of super shots for the album – or the website, or the face book page, or the family? Mike Pischetsreider is now going in to his 27th season (if you count last year) of owning and running the Top Shots photo business at Falls Creek. The introduction to ‘The 35mm Photographers Handbook’ by Julian Garrett and John Calder says “The first million photographs were the hardest

to take – but we’ve done it…” That was in the print film days. There is every chance that Mike and his team of professionals have achieved a similar milestone –but we’re not sure who’s counting. From the days of print to the digital age and now being able to offer digital packages, the Top Shots team have continued to develop and grow their quality product. A favourite line of Mike’s is “The business of life is the acquisition of memories!” and that’s the business he and the team are in.

HOLIDAY MEMOIRS They work hard to capture your treasured holiday memories! There are several ways you can take advantage of their service. One of the regulars is the Halley’s Comet chairlift shot in the morning as you ride up for your day out – with fabulous Spion Kopje in the background. Here the photographer (on the ground with the orange jacket) will call out a number – and that is your identifier to help find the shot in the shop. Try getting that with a phone! They will also do Ski and Snowboard Action, Park Jumps, family portraits, Snowclub photos, Junior Workshop and all of the kids’ races. Private Photo Shoots are also available. Take out one of the team for a ski/board run or a 20 minute portrait session. A Pro Photography shoot includes 50 plus images on a USB stick for $168 which is great value, but bookings are required. You can tell these guys are professional. They have the right gear, the big lenses, the ability to ski and or board and they love looking after people – giving you an extra dimension to your holiday in Falls Creek. They can also compose a photo pretty darn well. Call into the shop in Cloud 9 (around past the bar) and have a look at some of their

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Finding Freedom on Snow

L

ast weekend (25-27 June) DWA conducted new guide training at both Falls Creek and Thredbo introducing more than 20 new volunteers to the service. Disabled WinterSport Australia (DWA) used some good early season snow conditions to take a new cohort of volunteers through our well-regarded onsnow training program. Volunteer guides are essential for the long-term success of DWA’s services and the participation of a range of communities. At Falls Creek it was also the start of clinical placements on snow for two physiotherapy (PT) students and one occupational therapy (OT) student. The students receive Federal funding from Going Rural Health to complete placements in rural settings. These placements with DWA offer a unique opportunity for students to increase their knowledge of adaptive recreation and

experience, firsthand, the value of participation in on-snow activities for people living with a disability. DWA also benefits from student engagement as, during their fiveweek placement, they volunteer as snow sport guides and work on a project to assist DWA to develop resources for our members.

In previous years, projects by allied health students have included developing multi-media training content for DWA guides and demonstrating methods to overcome a variety of on-snow challenges such as wheelchair access on snowy slopes and transferring people into sit-skis.

The work has also included developing flash cards to assist DWA guides and members to communicate more easily on snow as well as creating an accessible pre-season exercise program for sit skiers.

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA A Personal Experience

H

eading to Howman’s Gap on Friday for the weekend training to become (hopefully) a level 1 volunteer guide, I really had no preconceived ideas about what the next 48 hours would entail. I had seen the Guides at Falls Creek and thought, wow, what a rewarding role that would be. I attended with my sister and niece. Skiing has been a family passion for well over 50 years after being introduced by our nearly 100-year-old mother. As children we were sent to ski camps at Howman’s Gap in the 1970’s. A delicious dinner was served with a smile in the YMCA dining room and the accommodation - comfortable and so incredibly disability friendly. We were all so warmly welcomed by the trainers, organisers and meeting the other ‘trainees’ settled most of the nerves. Early breakfast and an introduction about the next two days was informative. We were allocated into groups of about five trainees to two guides so tuition was personal and detailed. Up the mountain we headed with anticipation and excitement, rearing to learn how to become ski and boarding guides. Among many other things, we revisited the 10 Commandments of skiing and boarding, discussed what to observe about the environment, discussed hazards, and started to learn some really cool stuff from some really cool people. The guides provided knowledge and insight about how to communicate effectively, what to notice and how to provide a safe environment whilst introducing some of the adaptive equipment we would use as guides. We were all given the opportunity to trial the adaptive gear whilst being the guide as well as the participant. Skiing and boarding took on a new meaning as we learnt as much as was possible in one day.

group of leaner guides getting a quick run-down on the Sit-Ski as part of their training – in any weather. A Pic – Courtesy DWA

A quiz that evening before dinner fostered healthy discussion and did solidify that we were all up for the role. Another great meal was served to a group who were really gelling and learning from each other’s life experiences regarding DWA. Thank you to everyone who openly shared their motivational ‘why’ for attending the training. Sunday was the day of the “sit-ski”, again we all learnt by doing, listening and asking about a gozillion questions to our amazing guides. Thank goodness for the saying ‘there are no silly questions’ as I am sure I asked my quota… The sit-ski was an experience to behold, guiding it was a challenge and sitting in it a great reward, thank you to Hagen who valiantly guided six of us in comfort and style.

• The patience of the guides. • The help given by the lift operators. • Charlie from Ski School giving adaptive advice. • The passion of everyone involved. • The provision of excellent tuition and guidance. • The knowledge shared by all involved. • The professionalism and dedication of training guides. • The respect and understanding that every person and every situation will be different. • The creativity of the adaptive equipment to meet the needs of the individual. Thank you Ken, Mark and all involved in the weekend for a truly outstanding experience highlighting the benefits of volunteering with DWA. •

The weekend was absolutely fantastic. I can’t wait to attend my first camp and support a Primary Guide to enable a participant to enjoy snow sports. Some of the outstanding features of the weekend that I am compelled to mention are:

here are lots and lots of reasons that people decide to visit Falls Creek. The absolute beauty of the Bogong High Plains in summer is a major reason – but that is another beautiful story much worth investigating. Falls Creek as a winter holiday destination has plenty going for it. Not only does it have heaps of wonderful skiing (and boarding) terrain, it has a fabulous integration of ski slopes, the unique ski in – ski out facility – from your accommodation to the slopes and back again, and what we term a range of progression perfect slopes. That means that from the beginners’ areas, it is not a challenge to find the next step up to a slightly more challenging slope to then go to an even more challenging slope. People find it easy to get around and enjoy their experience. And if you’re not sure, Snowsports School offer lessons – a part of which is to help you navigate back to you lodge after skiing. Falls Creek offers skiing and boarding opportunities that you can do for eight hours a day – keeping fit - breathing in crystal clean air – and when you do stop for a rest, you can enjoy some of the best scenery this country has to offer. The next question is: How do we get to enjoy this wonderful place.

Fully licensed restaurant

INTIMATE DINING EXPERIENCE! Roi and Sue are now focusing on providing intimate dinners for small groups with prearranged bookings and four days notice.

Well Falls Creek is serviced by a very good alpine road. But like any alpine road it has its issues.

and probably for the last umpteen years. Falls Creek Coach Service offers regular services from Melbourne, (airport and rail), from Albury (airport and rail) and also a regular service up and down the hill – all designed to fit in with the rail and plane services that you are likely to take to get here. Another option could be to book a private transfer for yourself and your family in either of their luxury vehicles including the new 16 seat Mercedes that arrived recently.

Recently on Facebook, there have been quite a few questions posted regarding travelling to the snow… can I drive with my two children, do I need chains – where do I get them – can someone fit them for me? Having to carry chains and fit them when directed (by a staff member of a sign) is one of the drawbacks of a great holiday- bit it is vital for everyone’s safety. And not doing the right thing can result in fines in excess of $1000. Sort of makes you think doesn’t it? Then if you do have your vehicle parked in the resort and it snows – first you have to find your vehicle under a heap of snow, then you have to dig it out. Sounds like fun!

Park and Ride. If you do decide to drive here for your holiday, the smart move would be to park your car in the secure carpark at the Falls Creek Coach Service depot in Tawonga South and take the bus from here. The Park and Ride Service offered by Falls Creek Coaches is a dream. During the busier part of the winter a coach leaves for Falls Creek about every two hours. You can simply unload your gear undercover at the bus depot, park your car in the secure carpark (with options for undercover storage) and then your holiday starts as you board the coach.

Other little bits to contend with on your well-earned holiday are the issues we’re all faced with - snow – lots of it – enough to block the road. Black Ice – you can’t see it and when you do feel it, it is usually too late! Falling trees, vermin deer – big ones, plus our local kangaroos and wombats. All of these issues can absolutely ruin a holiday. You know, there is an easier way. And the secret is in the heading for this article. Forget the Fuss – Take the Bus. Falls Creek Coach Service has been here for years. And before them we had the Pyle family – and these operators have untold years of experience in getting our visitors to and from the snow safely – in the comfort of a well-appointed warm, clean dry coach – under the stewardship of a driver who has successfully completed the Hazardous ai16243430638_Zirkys Real Estate.pdf Area Driver training – and who has been travelling up and down the road all season –

Change of hours

Yes there are lots of reasons to take the base to Falls Creek. Safety, comfort, ease, no fuss - and remember, you are on holidays. Enjoy every moment of the time. Go to: www. fallscreekcoachservice.com.au for bookings, prices and timetables. And, as added incentive to leave the car in the car park, the cost of not carrying wheel chains can be quite expensive as this notice from Victorian Police shows. 1

FALLS CREEK MUSEUM Clear Communications

E

ven though the first lodge was built in 1947, there were no telephones in Falls Creek until 1960. The only access to a phone was at Rocky Valley Camp where the SEC had an extensive network to Mount Beauty, Bogong and the other camps such as Clover power station, the West Kiewa, Howman’s Gap, McKay Creek and Lower Bogong (now known as Clover Arboretum). There were test points with a phone every mile beside the road where contact could be made to the office in Mount Beauty and in extremes, could be contacted elsewhere. Part of Julian Newton-Brown’s job in the test laboratory at Rocky Valley was to read the weather instruments, put the details into groups, then call head office in Melbourne and give them the details. The tower on Mount McKay had a radiotelephone link to head office. The SEC was unconcerned about Falls Creek, so no power was connected until 1960 when Tom Mitchell, then politician, aired the matter in parliament. Tom was a keen skier. He applied to the Post Master General who was then responsible for telephones as well as mail until the telephone part of the PMG was sold off as Telecom, then to become Telstra. The PMG staff came up from Bright and installed an exchange in Diana Lodge. There were only about 15 lines to a post across the road uphill about 20 metres.

It was from here that you could put a line from the building into a box where connections were possible. You had to buy a cable from the disposal store. It needed to have an alloy of copper and steel in the wire similar to what the army had used during the war. If the phone failed the owner would have to find the break in the wire, not an easy task in the heavy snow. Then came the telephone itself. Direct dial phones were common in the cities but not in remote areas so Falls Creek got the oldfashioned sets with a hand wound magneto to ring the bell at the exchange. When the operator answered, she could then plug a line into another phone line or the exchange in Bright. In the phone were two dry cell batteries that carried the spoken word to the other phone connected. Trunk lines were expensive then, so each trunk was timed by the minute. The operator would disconnect you after a minute if you did not reply to here question “are you extending?” At Falls Creek, most of the bulk supplies came from Albury so that was classified as an interstate trunk call. Bill Griffiths would do a freight run on Thursdays to McKulloughs, Bishops Cool Stores and Arnold Brothers Fruit and Veges - so orders had to be placed on Wednesdays. Falls Creek had ‘Post Office Annie’ on their exchange. Annie would get each of the wholesalers on the line then connect each of the Falls Creek lodges in turn to give the orders. The cost of the call was then split up between the businesses.

MOTORING TIPS

This article was written by Julian NewtonBrown for the Falls Creek Museum. Julian’s Lodge ‘Arundel’ was known as Falls Creek 11, ‘Nelse’ was Falls Creek 6 and ‘Pretty Valley’ was known as Falls Creek 10. Two of these phones can now be found in the Falls Creek Museum with a third being returned to its original home at Diana Lodge. The phones were donated by Julian NewtonBrown, builder of the lodge known as Arundel, which then became ‘Julian’s’ and has recently been totally renovated to become Elk @ Falls Creek. • PS: A visit to the Falls Creek Museum is very rewarding. The museum is located in the Panabode building, beside the bottom station of Halley’s Comet Chairlift and when it is open, there will be a couple of bright yellow flags flying outside the door. Refer Notice on page Two of this paper. The Historical Society folk are keen to enlist more volunteers to help with the museum and to join us on the historical society. •

Preparing For Winter

Falls Creek

Travelling to Falls Creek this winter? • Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick. • Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades. • Check the condition of your tyres – or even consider getting winter tyres- more grip in slippery conditions. • Make sure your tire pressure is exactly what it should be. • Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly! • Check the amount of coolant/anti-freeze in your radiator. Our Service Centres have a Glycometer which will measure how cold your radiator fluid can get before freezing. • Carry a few emergency supplies, like a blanket, warm gloves, ice scraper, shovel – in case you get stuck out on the road.

FALL LINES From Falls Creek Rat Pack to APSI GM

I

n March this year, Falls Creek Snowsport’s own Nick Rankin was appointed to the role of General Manager of the Australian Professional Snowsport Instructors (APSI). Based in Jindabyne, Nick heads up a strong team of snowsports professionals providing high quality education, training and accreditation to the Australian snowsports industry. He brings considerable experience to the role following a career spanning 12 years. As a youngster Nick grew up and spent his winters in Falls, racing around the hill skiing with his Race Club mates (and their were lots of them). Nick attended Falls Creek Primary School and later the Falls Creek Academy. It's therefore not surprising that Nick’s snowsports career commenced at Falls Creek at the tender age of fifteen. Nick has refined his skillset since then, moving into supervisory and management roles both in Falls Creek and overseas in the U.S. and Japan. He attributes much of his development to the mentoring and guidance he received from those he has worked with in these roles. Somehow amongst all that skiing Nick managed to complete a Bachelor of Commerce from Deakin University. He has also progressed through the APSI pathway as an Alpine Level 4 Examiner, a member of the Alpine Technical Committee and as a member of the National Demo Team representing Australia in Bulgaria.

Congratulations to local lad Nick Rankin who has recently taken on the role of General Manager of the APSI. Pic – Courtesy the family

We wish Nick every success and knowing he will always wear Falls Creek on his sleeve. •

Nick is a great example of the career progression available to our snowsports professionals.

Summit Ridge is renowned for its numerous awards for both accommodation & dining. The restaurant in particular has achieved awards too numerous to list here and the quality of your experience continues to grow. Being high up in the village, the views are great and your access to the slopes under normal circumstances is really good – either down to the Eagle Chair, or down to Halley’s Comet. five kilometres at a time. He then packs the garbage bags into his trailer and takes them to the tip. A fantastic effort and one that we as a community really appreciate.

I

t’s sad – but it keeps happening. Monday this week a fellow worker in Mount Beauty watched a chap reshuffling his car and luggage – and piling the rubbish out onto the garden kerb. That got too much and he went and confronted the driver – explaining to put the rubbish back in his car and take it to a rubbish bin – of which there are plenty in the area.

Another young lady who travels over to Bright quite a lot also has responded to her sense of decency and often stops to pick up the rubbish left along the road. But why should we have to. It is because some other half-wit has no sense of selfrespect and absolutely no respect for the area and the environment around them. And these half-wits we do not need – at any time!

This littering makes this community – both off-mountain and in Falls - as mad as hell – and it is something we do not deserve. We love our area and we take care of our area. We have pride in our surroundings and we welcome the people who visit our area and ‘appreciate it!’

Keep Australia Beautiful Ironically, later next month we will have nationally, the Keep Australia Beautiful Week – from Monday 16th to Sunday 22nd August – and one of the themes is to ‘Respect Our Roadsides’ Let’s do some follow up on this shall we.

We certainly do not welcome people who think it is acceptable throw rubbish out anywhere – on the street, in the towns, in the National Park. If you can bring your take-away food and drink with you, you can take the empty containers back to a rubbish bin or to your bins at home. Nowhere in this country is rubbish acceptable.

EPA App The Victorian Environment Protection Authority has a great App(lication) for your phone that you can download from the App Store or Google Play where you can use your phone to snap a photo of littering, record details and forward the details to the EPA and a fine can be issued – subject to the details being correct.

Local Contributors One young resident who shall remain nameless has done, over the years, a fantastic job of walking sections of the Falls Creek Road with a garbage bag or three, covering both sides of the road and even going a bit down the slope to pick up someone else’s garbage – usually doing four or

If you care about this area, download the App and use it while you are a passenger going up and down the hill. •
