Foodie Tip of the Week: Someplace Else Bar & Grill – has really changed it up this season, and not just the menu, the team have redecorated too. Do yourself a favour and don’t limit yourself, go the seven course ‘Feed Me.’ Then pick a favourite plate and go back again! The trouble with that is, everything we had on the menu was so morish…’we’ll back again and again. The ‘Feed Me’ combo covered Cured Scallops, Salmon Tartare Tostada, Soft Shell Crab Sliders, Crispy Pork Boa, Chicken Wings, Chargrilled Sweet Corn Cob, Slow Cooked Short Ribs and Roast Potatoes.
Each dish is a standout on its own. The fusion of ingredients with some of my favourite Japanese, Thai and Korean flavours must be tried to truly do this review justice. Don’t hesitate, just book – NOW! 03 5758 3252. http://www. someplaceelsefallscreek.com/ Righty ho…. now get out there and carve up that corduroy…! Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

KANGAROO HOPPET 2021 Do it Our Way - or Your Way!
A
fter the success of last year’s virtual Kangaroo Hoppet which saw just over 1900 participants from 37 nations across all seven continents take part in the event ‘their way’ using a physical activity of their choice at a location of their choice, the organising committee were faced with deciding how to hold the 2021 event in a world where skiers from overseas are unable to enter Australia, and those of us in Australia may, or may not, be able to get to Falls Creek depending on the level of COVID-19 restrictions in place across the nation on Saturday 28th August. The solution - Do It Our Way or Do It Your Way, or if you like, pay your money twice and try both. Participants in both events will receive a colourful ‘buff’ style neckwarmer/ headband thanks to ski accessory brands Rojo and Elude.
If you do it our way you will take part in either the 42km, 21km or 7km event on cross country skis at Falls Creek on the fourth Saturday in August. This year marks a special anniversary for the Hoppet – the thirtieth running of the event. But if you choose to do it your way you have a two week window from the 14th to the Head Coach of the German XC Team Peter Schlickenreider did last year’s 28th August after which Kangaroo Hoppet ‘his way’ – and with lots of power!! DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Camp One of Many
D
WA Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR) Camp (Fri July 3 – Sun Jul 5)
Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR) held their winter camp at Falls Creek last weekend with DWA hosting the camp and supplying on and off snow support and guides. All told DWA hosted 29 people that included five participants (aged between 8 and 18). On Saturday and Sunday there were four sit-skis on the mountain with the DSR participants enjoying the gift of snow from Mother Nature. Alec on a sit-ski could be seen coming off multiple chair rides on a sit ski with Guide Jane and her crew of James, Tahlia and Samantha while Livian just wanted to go faster down the run with Mark and John in support. Elise and Thomas kept to Mouse Trap initially on Saturday but then progressed through the day with Elise straight skiing a box on Sunday.
Hagan, first by honing old skills on mouse trap and then progressing to Drovers Dream, with the elusive search to one day be independent and to be able to ski Falls Creek and many other ski fields around the world. The other participants, three in sit-skis, and two skiers were continually moving around the mountain with the assistance from DWA Guides and enjoying the day. DWA assist with adaptive on snow involvement with experienced guides and planned improvement for all participants in all camps throughout the winter season. The camps are continually growing with 10 more to be completed this season. If here is any information you would like on DWA contact info@ disabledwintersport.com.au. DWA: kpayne@disabledwintersport.com. au – or visit the website: https://www. disabledwintersport.com.au. •

DSR participants are all children who like able bodied skiers and snowboarders - must adapt to the terrain, weather and equipment they ride on, never complaining, they just enjoy every moment. Back in 2018, Elise provided a quote for DWA: “I was extremely sporty previously, before my injury - but now I am able to find other things I can do again – that is really amazing, today I just I loved it” This weekend Elise continued that theme by starting back on a mono sit ski with guide

kiing on the Bogong High Plains grew in popularity in the early 1930’s. Access then for the enthusiasts was “…to catch the 8:35am train from Flinders Street to Bairnsdale. - ...car to Omeo, arriving at 9:15pm the same evening.” From Omeo, it was by car to Glen Wills or to Shannon Vale, where packhorses were used to reach the snow line. In 1945 the packhorse trip to Cope Hut would have cost 12 shillings and sixpence per skier. The initiation of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme was to change access. Plans for dams necessitated the construction of a road which was to follow the packhorse tails blazed by the Ropers - mountain cattlemen who held leases in Rocky Valley in the 1920s. By the early 1940’s, skiing had become a popular pastime for workers based at Bogong Village, then the administrative headquarters of the
SEC Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Due to WWII, private vehicles were a rarity and petrol was rationed so enthusiasts had to walk and ski 20 kilometres to their skiing base. Taking up to four hours, they were, according to SEC worker Fred Vines, “generally considered to be A pleasant stroll - hiking from Howman’s Gap to Falls Creek. LOCAL HISTORY it was necessary to produce a permit. It is understood the fact that all SEC operations closed down for the weekend had been completely overlooked. The gate?? Oh I almost forgot to mention it! Someone dismantled it and threw it over the bank! (near what is now the Golf Course). It was a few years later, in 1958, that it was reported in Schuss magazine that “Access to Falls Creek has been facilitated for the coming winter. Permits can now be obtained at the Gatehouse without prior notification, although an authority from the club secretary or a booking voucher should be produced. The road will be kept open to Howman’s but cars staying longer than the weekend will need to be parked at Turnback Creek.” However, would-be skiers still had to walk or ski from Howman’s Gap to Falls Creek. Carrying their gear and food this trip would take one to one and a half hours. Various locals saw this as a business opportunity. In 1955, Bob Hymans trialled the use of a horse and sled to overcome the problem of transporting stores and personal gear - but it was not a success. At the same time Cec Dobson (builder of Winterhaven) resorted to man-hauling from Howman’s, using old skis attached to platforms to carry the loads. Reportedly, it was while hauling a load, he encountered Ory Frueauf (builder of Snowhaven) who volunteered to assist. This became the start of a partnership which in 1956, saw them run an oversnow service to Falls Creek. Luggage was weighed on a fish scale and was 4 pence a pound per pack weight. It was loaded onto a sled behind a track-driven tractor, ‘Leaping Lena’, while guests walked from Howman’s Gap. A year later the SEC began clearing the road and the long walk became a memory of the past.
In 1960 access to Falls Creek was further improved, the area immediately below the Village “enlarged almost beyond recognition” to provide for an immense number of cars and buses - (the Gully Car-park). By 1960 the foundations of the village had been laid. A village management advisory committee had been established and Falls Creek was acknowledged as a destination for tourists. Its place on the map of Victoria was further confirmed with the opening of the Bogong High Plains Road to Shannon Vale by the Country Roads Board, in conjunction with the State Electricity Commission, the Tourism Development Authority and the Forests Commission on the 3rd December, 1966. • This article kindly provided by Diana Patterson, a previous board member with FCRM and a member of the Falls Creek Historical Society.

CFA FIRE SAFETY ADVICE Preventable Structure Fires
W
hat’s your role in fire safety? For many Victorians, the fire season has come and gone. Now the winter season is upon us, and it is winter that brings more preventable house fires than any other season. Across the state, there were about 15 per cent more preventable house fires last winter compared to the other seasons. CFA attended 467 preventable house fires (without referring to last year’s devastating bushfires). The single largest cause of fire in the home across the year is unattended cooking. However in winter, there is commonly a rise in heating-related fires. Other causes of fires in winter are from fixed and portable heaters and central heating, chimney fires and fires related to wood-fuelled heating. Clothes drying too close to the heat
source, clothes dryers and candles are other examples of preventable fires in our homes during winter. Historically, Fire Investigators have attended fires caused by: • Candles left unattended close to furniture. • Cooking left unattended. • Embers from open fire place falling onto carpet. • Portable heaters left too close to some towels. When it comes to fires, there is no ‘offseason.’ Particularly during winter, this is a time when people spend more time inside; keeping warm by enjoying an open fire, enjoying a home-cooked meal or warming up by the heater. This is also a timely reminder to check your electric blankets and heaters. If there is any doubt that something is faulty, don’t take the risk. Repair or replace it, don’t continue to use it. Remember to keep clothing a safe distance from heaters (i.e. at least one metre from the heater); cleaning the lint filters
in clothes dryers; turning off electrical appliances that are not being used; avoiding placing weighty objects on beds with electric blankets and taking care when cooking. Another crucial aspect to fire safety is about evacuation. If a fire cannot be safely extinguished, people must be able to get themselves and any other occupants to a safe area and contact ‘000’ immediately. Compounding this evacuation risk is the likelihood that guests may be unfamiliar with their specific location, environment, density of accommodation and the harshness of the external environment should a building need to be evacuated. Effective preparation and planning for evacuation can significantly reduce this risk. An effective fire evacuation plan is simple to develop and easy to implement during an emergency. A fire evacuation plan must include: 1. A system of warning building occupants (typically a smoke alarm or fire system) to ensure all occupants evacuate as soon as required; 2. Actions to take on leaving a building; 3. Notification of the fire brigade with accurate building address/location;

CFA FIRE SAFETY ADVICE to your accommodation. This plan will tell you how to safely evacuate from the accommodation and where the evacuation assembly point is. This is a safe place where the occupants of the building will meet in the event of an emergency. Please remember that structure fires can happen any time, but the risk is increased at night when we are asleep. When we sleep we can lose our sense of smell. This is where we rely on working smoke alarms to alert occupants. The fire and rescue services are encouraging Victorians to replace their old smoke alarms with new units. New smoke alarms have a lithium battery with a ten year life span, meaning Victorians wouldn’t have to change their batteries annually. It is proven fact that “only working smoke alarms save lives.”

It is your responsibility to check your smoke alarm’s battery annually and if your smoke alarm is 10 years or older the whole unit should be changed. If you need to change smoke alarms, ideally it is recommended to change to a photo-electric smoke alarms powered by a 10-year lithium battery. Smoke alarms will detect smoke the quickest, thus alerting you earlier and giving you, your family, your friends and/or your guests, more time to evacuate to safety. AGL NEWS Community Update
A
s an important partner with many organisations in the Kiewa Valley, as well as being a major employer in our community, we felt it was appropriate to establish a platform to keep you up to date with our operations, community partnerships, and let you know about any of our activities which may have an impact on your day-to-day. You may notice elsewhere in This Week that we are opening up Expressions of Interest for a Community Dialogue Group, or CDG, where we hope to meet regularly and elevate our communication. We get it – no one wants to be spoken to, we want a conversation to take place. Our aim is to elevate our communication so that open, frank, and transparent communication is part of our everyday operations. On that note, whilst we are still in the process of establishing our CDG, we believe that a semi-regular update in This Week might be a good avenue. Let us know your thoughts on our Community Update.

the cabins, AGL is in discussions with all levels of government, regarding the transfer of the Crown Lease, without impact to the Bogong Outdoor Education Centre.
You may notice for the next four weeks that the water levels are lower than usual. We acknowledge that this may lead to impacts on our regular users of the pondage. For further information, feel free to get in touch. Return to more normal water levels is on track for late July when our upgrade works are complete.
The long-term plan for Bogong Village will be a decision for the Government authority that will potentially take ownership. Negotiations are ongoing between the Government bodies and AGL. AGL will be approaching local community groups, business chambers, and other stakeholders to provide input at our Bogong Village Future Planning and Transition Forum, to be held in July. ALPINE RADIO Radio Reading On Community Radio
D
id you know, that as part of its radio programming Alpine Radio presents two weekly RPH Radio Reading programs? RPH Australia is the peak body for the Radio Reading Network, which aims to meet the information needs of people with a print disability; people who through blindness, low vision, age, disability or lack of literacy skills are unable to read printed material. As Australia’s population ages, Radio Reading programs attract a strong and growing audience of older people, who are more likely to develop a print disability as a consequence of ageing. There are 18 dedicated RPH community radio stations in Australia. Generalist community radio stations, like Alpine Radio, broadcast RPH programs in one hour blocks with up to five minutes of sponsorship announcements allowed per hour. Alpine Radio has been broadcasting RPH programs for several years and has several regular volunteer readers to provide this great service. Ann has been reading for RPH on Wednesday afternoons between 2pm and 3pm for about 3 years. She says, “It’s been a bit on and off as we were regularly travelling for my husband’s job, but now retirement has happened I can read more regularly. I usually read from the Sunday newspaper, and I try to mix the weighty with the humorous; aiming always to be interesting and informative!”
Cath has been an RPH reader for some years on a casual basis to cover when other readers are not available. Cath says, “As an avid reader of the local weekly newspaper, reading on RPH gives me the opportunity to share with Reading for the Print Handicapped presenters, (from left), Cathy Gunn, Cath McDowall listeners news and Gill Harrowfield, Pic – Courtesy Alpine Radio items that relate to the forward. MOTORING TIPS Preparing For Winter
Falls Creek
The entire length has been carefully lined with high voltage Green Power floodlights, and lights up from the top of Halley’s Comet at Cloud 9, all the way downhill to QT in Slalom Plaza. Every night, our dedicated slope maintenance team will maintain snow conditions to provide a skiing and snowboarding playground suited for beginners through to the more advanced that want to experience the thrill of nighttime riding. •
Fireworks Fiesta Thursday nights are coming alive this winter, with the Fireworks Fiesta. Grab the kids, or a mate, and cap off your day by watching a magical fireworks show under the stars brought to you by BMW. See the show from the comfort of your accommodation, or get up close to the action and head to the Village Bowl near the Frying Pan Inn each Thursday night at 7pm. •
Travelling to Falls Creek this winter? • Check your battery. Cold weather is hard on all batteries. Make sure yours is in good nick. • Replace your wiper blades and keep your washer bottle full. Trying to rid your windscreen of ice with your wipers will only damage the blades. • Check the condition of your tyres – or even consider getting winter tyres- more grip in slippery conditions. • Make sure your tire pressure is exactly what it should be. • Check your wheel chains and ensure that you know how to fit them correctly. Too many problems are caused by people not knowing how to fit chains correctly! • Check the amount of coolant/anti-freeze in your radiator. Our Service Centres have a Glycometer which will measure how cold your radiator fluid can get before freezing. • Carry a few emergency supplies, like a blanket, warm gloves, ice scraper, shovel – in case you get stuck out on the road.

COMFORTABLE SKIING Flexen groovin’
F
lex may be the ‘be-all and end-all’ of a ski boot identity, but it’s a pretty fluid concept. Check out the flex rating on your boot compared to your friends. They might have the same number but move completely differently. Boots used to be super stiff. When we used to use 220cm long skis, the ski tip was more than a metre away. Getting your pressure to it was a tough gig. Ski technique at the time involved a whole lot more twisting than flexing. You were likely to break your leg before you bent the boot. With shorter shaped skis and the associated change in technique, boots became a bit softer, though they were still being driven by race-boot design. As skis evolved into something resembling the sticks we now see on shelves, boots got softer again. These days they ride a fine line between allowing you to absorb surface changes while staying centred on the shorter skis and being able to drive your weight into the tip of the ski. In an effort to make boots more comfortable, such as the sad case of the Rossignol ‘Soft’ experiment, boots got way softer and basically just sucked. Now we’re back to boots that should offer you somewhere between 70mm to 100mm of forward knee movement once the boot is engaged.

hile the snow looks beautiful as it falls, it makes driving way more difficult and increases your chances of an accident significantly. While it’s best to avoid driving in bad weather as much as possible, it’s often unavoidable. If you must hit the road during a snowy winter wonderland, keep these tips and tricks in mind to stay as safe as possible. 1. Drive Slowly This must be the most obvious thing to state when it comes to driving in the snow, but it has to be said. Really though, actually drive slower and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. The snow makes the roads slippery and reduces visibility so you’ll need to give yourself plenty of more time to react to changing conditions. This advice is heavily aimed at those who drive 4WD or All-Wheel Drive cars. While these vehicles do offer some more traction and control, it does not make you invincible. The roads are still significantly less safe and require slow driving. 2. Give Yourself Distance Most people follow the two (or three) second rule of thumb to calculate the minimum distance they should keep behind from the car in front so that
TIPS FOR SNOW DRIVING there is adequate time to stop. In the snow, you want to at the very least double this distance. Ideally, triple it. If you do slide or skid on the snow, the farther away you are from other vehicles the safer you’ll be. 3. Lights ALWAYS have your lights on when driving in the snow. With the reduced visibility, you’ll want to make your surroundings as visible as possible. On the side, you’ll want other drivers to be able to see you as well. But, do not use high beam in fog or snow as it reflects back at you and reduces visibility. 4. NEVER Use Cruise Control You’ll need extra vigilance and extra control when it comes to driving in the snow. Not only do you need to adjust your speed more frequently when driving in the snow, you’ll also need much more control over steering, even if you’re driving on a straight road. Never use cruise control when driving in the snow. Ever. 5. Avoid Slamming on the Break If your tires start to skid, most people’s first instinct is to panic and slam on the break- don’t do this. Instead ease off the accelerator and try to steer the car out
of potential collisions. Slamming on the breaks once your tires have already locked up and lost traction won’t help. Skidding out can be frightening, but try to stay as calm as possible in order to safely slow down and come to a stop. 6. Beware of Bridges Bridges are the first to freeze and ice over in cold weather. Unlike roads which lose their temperature on their surface, bridges are exposed the wind and cold from underneath which promotes the perfect environment for black ice. Even if the roads seem okay in mild snow, use extra caution when you get to a bridge.

7. Clean Your Car Don’t slack off when it comes to cleaning your car. Even if you’re just driving a short distance, that snow of your roof is a hazard. It can fall in front and obstruct your vision, or it can fly off on to the car behind you which is seriously dangerous. Also, always keep cleaning essentials in your car all winter long such a scraper and shovel and make sure your car has enough windshield wiper fluid for the season.
JULY 20 Twilight Tuesdays! The Village Bowl 3:30 to 5:30pm for our ‘Street Party’ with fire pits, marshmallows, games and music! COVID-19 Restrictions may apply
8. Keep Sand or Salt! Getting stuck in the snow is the worst. Adding some sand or salt in front of your tyre will provide the traction the tyre needs for you to drive your way out. Keep a bag in your boot if possible.
