XC NEWS A Request
A
t the time of writing this Dan Andrews still has Falls Creek closed to all visitors, so for the lucky few living here, and the Australian Cross Country Ski Team, can all take advantage of great spring weather, zero crowds and continued trail grooming by Falls Creek Resort Management. Sources deep in the Andrew’s government are suggesting it may not be too much longer and Kiewa Valley locals should be xc skiing again, or maybe not. Regardless, I thought it might be timely to remind people about courtesy when it comes to using the groomed xc trails. Especially in spring conditions, please stay off the freshly groomed trails in the late afternoon, this applies to walkers and skiers. The foot print and ski marks are deep due to the soft spring snow and then quickly freeze as the temps drop, making for very difficult skiing the next morning.
When out walking and enjoying our back yard, please keep to the side of the freshly groomed tracks. Pic – Courtesy Falls Creek XC
Let’s hope we will all be up there soon, skiing in one of the best back yards in the country! •
If you are walking on the trails please keep to one side and avoid the classic tracks, once again chewed up tracks make for challenging skiing. The groomers spend a lot of time and effort redoing the trails every night and become frustrated when walkers and skiers unnecessarily destroy their work.

KANGAROO HOPPET The Best Way!!!
T
he Kangaroo Hoppet has wrapped up for another year with a great participation level and many wonderful stories from a virtual event. Way back in the sunny and free days of February, the Organising Committee decided to again offer a virtual Hoppet so that overseas skiers could keep up their involvement with the event despite being locked out of the country. By June, the committee were still thinking along the lines of offering a real event for Victorians, plus folk from within the Border Bubble and the ACT, but by early August, reality set in and the Virtual Hoppet became the only offering. The option of a refund or transfer of entry to 2022 and free entry to the virtual event was offered to all those who had entered the actual event. Only 5% have asked for a refund, which is a wonderful vote of confidence in our event.

KANGAROO HOPPET AGL also invest in athlete scholarships each ear that support the aspirations of Australian skiers to compete internationally (more on this topic in a later edition). The Mount Beauty and District Bendigo Community Bank have recently joined the Hoppet as a major sponsor and have been vital in supporting the event through the COVID disruptions. Falls Creek Resort Management have maintained vital support for the actual skiing event through financial, logistical support and preparation of great trails for the event and during the season. All major sponsors of the Hoppet are vital to the ongoing sustainability of the event and the Hoppet Organising Committee and skiing community are genuinely appreciative of their support. While a great way to get motivated to do some exercise, the Virtual Hoppet was primarily aimed at keeping connected during our second year of pandemic restrictions. Many participants shared their stories on the Facebook page Kangaroo Hoppet – Do It Your Way. Take some time to check it out as there are so many great stories from the valley and around the world.

COMMUNITY PAVILLION FOR THE KIEWA VALLEY Plus Improved Golf Club Facilities
T
he Upper Kiewa Valley could soon have a brand-new community facility and function centre overlooking the scenic 18th green of the Mount Beauty Golf Club. The 2019-2020 Black Summer Bushfires impacted many lives across Australia and in the Upper Kiewa Valley. In support of local community recovery needs, the proposal for the Upper Kiewa Valley Recreation & Community Hub (UKVRC Hub) was formed, for which the Club is now seeking funding through the Commonwealth Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants program. The proposed Hub comprises of a Community Pavillion - a flexible space dedicated to community use for events, functions; a Club Pavillion - an open space designed for a multitude of uses, incorporating player facilities; and a Food and Beverage Pavillion - a quality, retail restaurant, open to all, to be run by a commercial operator. Chair of the sub-committee working on the project, Stephen Short, said the Club believes the facility would be a valuable asset to the entire community. “With the original clubhouse built by volunteers in the 1950s, it’s been a dream of the Club to provide a contemporary facility for players and visitors, and the wider community, for a long time,” Mr Short said.

FALL LINES The Hub has already received strong support from local community groups and businesses, including local hospitality providers, as well as the Federal Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines MP, State Member for Benambra, Mr Bill Tilley MLA, Alpine Shire Council, Alpine Health, Mount Beauty Chamber of Commerce and Golf Australia. The Club has also received a financial pledge of $200,000 from the Mount Beauty and District Community Bank should the grant application be successful. “Developing the project with local support and participation has been a big focus for the Club, as we want to make sure our local business owners and community members share our vision and see the value this facility will bring to our region,” Mr Short said. The Mount Beauty Golf Course, which is fully maintained by volunteers, encompasses an 18-hole course and clubhouse with 135 members. It currently attracts around 1000 visiting players each year. For further information, have a look at the dedicated page on the Club website or if you wish to register your support for this project, please e-mail: ukvrchub@ mtbeautygolfclub.org.au. •

Young Achiever Here is a great image we can use to provide some inspiration and a positive vibe through the recent lockdowns we’ve all experienced. We can also use it to show that we can still achieve things that we’ve set out to achieve and not let coronavirus get the better of us. Young Jasper Wong, (11yrs) has worked hard in training and performed his first backflip on snow, with ideal conditions a couple of weeks back. Jasper is a student at Falls Creek PS, and is also involved in Falls Creek Race Club. •

Community Sponsorship Program
SEP 17 Start of the Victorian School Holidays.
R
ound 2 of 2021 Community Bank - Mount Beauty & District community sponsorship program is now open, and closes on 30th September. Like many others throughout the wider community, so many of our local clubs, groups and organisations have been forced to suspend their operations and activities due to the necessary COVID-19 lockdowns. However, it seems that restrictions on movement and activities may be gradually eased. This will give hope and will allow planning to re-start. New equipment and facilities can be planned for. New projects put forward for community enjoyment. Such things may need financial support, and that is where the Community Bank - Mount Beauty & District may be able to help with funding to assist with projects to benefit our local communities. Application forms are available in paper form from the community bank premises at 28 Hollonds Street Mount Beauty or by email from: kmmcel@westnet.com.au Applications need to be lodged no later than 30th September. For further information, phone the Community Bank – Mount Beauty & District on 03 5754 4484, or the Company Secretary on 0437 693 333. •
Tennis Anyone The Mount Beauty Tennis Club is keen to hear from anyone who may be interested in playing in the upcoming Kiewa and Talgarno District Tennis Association summer competition. The pennant usually occurs each Saturday between late October and February with a 2 week break over the Christmas period. The senior competitions commence at 1pm with section 1 for more competitive players and section 2 a little more relaxed. Senior teams consist of 6 players of a mixed gender make up. The junior competitions commence at 9am with section 3 (usually older more experienced juniors) and section 4 (younger less experienced players). Four players of any gender are required each week for the junior teams. The club intends to enter a Section one team for the first time in many years if a couple more male players can be found.
