T
he Mount Beauty Music Festival proved to be a good time had by all who attended. The weekend hit off on the Friday night at the West Peak Hotel with Rex Stringer from Harrietville - our winner from the Alpine Shire Freeza Event April 2018. The evening then proceeded with the lovely Alice Skye and her sublime voice, thing's got a little naughty with Fanny Bouffante turning some heads, with her show 'Scandals’ - having recently performed her new show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Tyer Nakoa and Holly (from Bellingen) kept the audience going, But the highlight of the night was Z Star Delta (from the UK) Zee really got people up and moving. What a voice and she can play those drums. Saturday was a full day of markets, outdoor stage and into the evening with Cranky Charlies, West Peak Hotel and the Community Centre full of quality artists performing ‘til late. Dr Hernandez was an awesome Cuban band and wow! - the community centre was grooving. Sunday we brought out the boys toys at the first 'Tow & Show' with a special addition of a Mad Max Car made by a local artist. The afternoon filled the town with music and a crowd at the 'Picnic by the Pondage’ was hit at the library.

F
alls Creek has implemented a ski reuse program, turning discarded skis and snowboards into eye-catching artworks throughout the alpine village. Two new ‘ski fences’ have been constructed during the summer months, re-purposing over 400 skis that would otherwise have been designated for landfill. Skis have been sourced from rental outlets at Falls Creek, and also the Alpine Shire region as part of this project. Serving Resort Management’s dedication to sustainability, the ski fences have been constructed by resort staff in areas including a popular thoroughfare to Falls Creek Road, expected to become a point of interest this winter. Other recycled ski artworks installed recently include ‘The Wren’ in the Slalom Plaza fountain and ‘Throne of Skis’ at the Windy Corner Cross Country Ski Centre, both kindly donated by Michael Laubli, creative artist from Wodonga. Discarded skis and snowboards are notably

Falls Creek Resort Management’s Asset Manager, Rachael Gadd, says the organisation’s Environmental Management Plan includes a recognised goal of 50% landfill diversion by the year 2020, a goal that looks well within reach with current rates at 46%. Falls Creek has made great steps over recent years in promoting the resort’s heritage as an arts-based community. A dedicated Arts and Culture Strategy has seen a number of accomplished artists serve in the Artist in Residence program including a 12 metre tall mural of a Bogong Moth on the village’s water holding tank. •

FALL LINES Community Bonfire
A
s part of the 2019 Feast High Country, a Tourism North East initiative, Falls Creek will be putting on a fabulous Bonfire on Saturday night on the shores of Rocky Valley Lake. Now, at the time of going to print, there is a fair amount of snow-fall predicted on the BOM site, particularly for Thursday and Friday. Now if this is the case, check the Falls Creek Facebook site for updates. But, knowing that the forecasters can err, let’s talk about what is planned and what we can enjoy. The 2019 Feast High Country runs over the period from May 3rd to May 19th and involves about 40 different establishments and functions. Check them out at www. feasthighcountry.com.au Our part of the festival is the bonfire part, (not to be confused to with the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley hosting the Valley Fire Festival next week on Saturday 18th – see below) and last year was enjoyed by everyone. Therefore, the Falls Creek community would like to invite all of our friends and guests to attend the Feast High Country
Cycling Tip Cyclists in the area, please use your lights! Motorists find it hard to see you.

Bonfire to be held on the Rocky Valley Lake foreshore this Saturday the 11th May, 2019. Rug up and keep warm around one of the biggest bonfires you’ve ever seen; rock to the sounds of our fabulous DJ and sample fireside treats like damper and marshmallows. Locally crafted Food and Beverage options will be available to purchase on site. Jerry’s Stall for Goulash and other tasty treats and Woodfire Desire for ripper pizzas. As well as the big bonfire, we’ll also have some fire-pits for toasting, sitting around and cuddling. We may even get in a Laser Light Show if we’re lucky. From around 5:30pm to about 8pm it should be a fun evening – if the weather holds out. Dress warm and enjoy good company, good food and good times. •

ike a good bonfire? Come and kick back with friends and family at the new Valley Fire Festival, celebrating the season and the harvest in the Kiewa Valley. On Saturday the 18th of May the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley is hosting the Valley Fire Festival (formerly Community Bonfire) behind Falls Creek Coaches in Tawonga South. From 3pm there will be marshmallows for purchase to toast on the fire-pits, delicious hot chocolate, and a fun hula-hoop workshop with our guest performer. The traditional bonfire will be lit at sunset, and local musicians will entertain us while the flames burn high. Thrilling fire artistry will light up your evening providing a great atmosphere for locals and visitors to socialise and enjoy the beautiful autumn night. Woodfire Desire and The Spice Trailer will be on site for a warming dinner – Stockpot and Swiss+Chips will also be open just a short stroll away for early or late dinner or takeaway. Bring your own chair, a warm coat and your friends down to relax and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. Entry is by gold coin donation at the gate. This event is proudly run by the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley (a local not for profit community group) and supported by the Alpine Shire.
