MOUNTAIN BIKE EXTRAVAGANZA Part One
T
here are several things that are key to the success of any event. One is the organisation (which we can control). Another is the weather (which we cannot control). The good news is that last weekend’s Mountain Biking events went off perfectly – with absolutely great weather to boot!
Victorian Regional Schools Race This event, created locally, took place on Friday 26th and has grown significantly over the last couple of years – with the feedback from students and staff suggesting that “there should be more of this type of event!” Back in February 2019 just on 110 students represented 15 schools from around the state. This year we had 195 kids entered from 35 schools around the state with schools from as far away as Bendigo, Kyneton and the Surf Coast. The Year 7/8 category was the largest group with 51 students entered The Lakeview MTB trail was freshly revamped – and credit should go to the FCRM ops crew who had done a lot of work to it to get it in top shape for the day’s racing. Brad Redmond from Mount Beauty Secondary College was the MC for the day – he did a great job!! Kept the kids entertained and gave all the safety briefings “remember - we’re not out here racing for sheep stations, stop and help your mates if they need it!”

ast Friday at Falls Creek – out by the lake – we saw 195 kids take part in the Victorian Regional Schools Race. Several of the racers that were attracted to that event then stayed on to take part in the 2021 XCO State Championship Series run by Big Hill Events and Entry Zone. The Hub for the weekend’s racing was Slalom Plaza – which saw coffees going out of Stingray at a great rate of knots. There were a few street closures in the village – but overall everyone enjoyed the event and did not have to go far to watch the action Saturday 27th Feb saw the staging of the XCO (Cross Country Olympic Format) with 111 competitors from all round the state entered. Riders had to complete three or four laps depending on their category with the Elite Men having to complete five laps.
XCM – Cross Country Marathon event which involved 98 riders competing over a gruelling 20km course. The race started on Slalom St, went up through the village roads, out along the aqueduct, down Wishing Well and Flowtown, then the long steep gravel climb up Road 24, up Lorna’s Link, down Generator and Vortex, also finishing down the double staircase into Slalom Plaza.

WELCOME TO PEAKS Our 12th Event
W
Welcome to the 12th Peaks Challenge
hat is it that makes Peaks Challenge so special?
Is it the stunning scenery and leg/ lung bursting climbs of the Victorian High Country? Is it the breathtaking array of carbon eye candy that propel people forward?
The hospitality of the community. The professionalism of our suppliers.
Is it the anticipation of whether the weather will be a bone chilling 3.4 degrees or an energy sapping 34 degrees?
And, of course, it wouldn’t happen without the bravery of our riders who put it all on the line even signing up, then leave nothing in reserve as they pedal 235kms while climbing and descending 4,500 metres.
It’s all those things, but the key ingredient that makes it special are the people who love bike riding and love Peaks Challenge.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 12 months since we were last at Falls Creek. It seems like yesterday; and it seems like a lifetime ago.
The magic wouldn’t happen without the tireless commitment of the Bicycle Network team. The generosity of our partners. The selflessness of the riders’ support teams.
Incredibly, for us, in those 12 months while thousands of people took up bike riding to escape lock down, we weren’t able to run a single event. It so good to be back. Why? Because we’re amongst people who love bike riding, love helping others and love Peaks Challenge. Craig Richards, CEO Bicycle Network

On behalf of Victoria’s premier all seasons Alpine Resort it is our pleasure to welcome you to Falls Creek for the 12th year of the Peaks Challenge. Following the challenges that the last 12 months have presented, we’re delighted to be hosting the event and welcoming you the high plains and this amazing location. At Falls Creek, we love the mountains, and we take pride in sharing them with others and to see people enjoying them all year round. The Peaks Challenge offers 235km of some of the finest road cycling in Australia, and the challenge is a big one indeed. Starting at Falls Creek, the ride climbs up the Tawonga Gap, Mount Hotham and through Omeo before heading up the back of Falls Creek. This year, the brand new 100km route will be ridden by those who are up for a challenge but not quite ready for the infamous three climbs of the Peaks Challenge. Who knows, maybe those who do the 100km ‘Not for the faint hearted’ loop will tackle the big one next year. The Peaks Challenge is renowned for being one of the top 10 endurance rides in the world. It’s a punishing endeavour that will push all the participants to their limits. Conquering the Peaks Challenge, and even just having the courage to take it on is a momentous achievement and we congratulate all those who sign themselves up and click in. We welcome all riders and their crews to enjoy Falls Creek’s famous hospitality. We’ve got a fabulous selection of places to eat and drink, as well as massage and day spa facilities for those who have earnt it (and those who haven’t). Welcome all Peaks Challengers and the people who support you. We hope you enjoy your time at Falls Creek and the stunning Victorian High Country, we look forward to seeing you all back again soon. Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

PEAKS CHALLENGE Celebrating its Twelfth Year!
B
ack in the mid 2000’s AGL decided to dig a 6.5kilometre long tunnel that would be five metres in diameter. By my Handymath.com calculator, that works out to 12762,716,912 cubic metres of rock – which was rated at about 200mpa (with average concrete rated at 20 to 30 mpa). This incredible amount of rock – which had not been designated for any purpose –would surely be enough to seal the 32km of the Bogong High Plains Road from Falls Creek to Shannonvale. And so the process started and as a result of that sealing – many activities have now been able to take place. One of the first and still the biggest event is what was then called the Bicycle Network Three Peaks that took place on Sunday 7th March 2010. 1852 riders entered, with some electing to ride from Falls Creek to Dinner Plain and others electing to do the second half – Dinner Plain to Falls Creek. The weather on Saturday was great – but Sunday – Oh dear! It rained and it was cold – especially climbing Hotham –with many pulling out at Dinner Plain.
riding around 200km) and then had to deal with the rock splinters that were sticking to tyres and causing flats –many, many flat tyres. But those that did make it had really achieved – and we mean ‘really achieved!’ Over the years many locals have ridden the event. Names like Bernie McArdle, Andy Mero, Justin Hanlon and Larry Franklin are just a few that come to mind. Then later we have Brian Peacock from Rocky Valley Bikes and Meredith Iaria; Ron Gallagher; Mandy Bland; Atilla Kerestes; Shaun Power (having done if five or six times) Kevin Bradley and Iain Morrison. Your Ed understands that Shaun Power is doing it again, and this year Glenyse Peacock (from Rocky Valley Bikes) is also going to ride it. Last year, we were very lucky – being able to stage the Peaks after the fires and before the lock-down. This year, as we go to press, it is looking much better. And as the weekend approaches, we must simply say thanks to the team at Bicycle Network and to all of the volunteers who make this event happen.
An excellent time for the 235km in somewhat cool conditions. Pic – Ken Bell

SETTLERS TAVERN Thanks
I
t’s always bittersweet to see one of our beloved business owners move on, paving way for a new owner to take over a local icon - which is exactly the case at Settlers Tavern. After 15 years serving up thousands upon thousands of amazing pub meals, Mardi Lucas poured her last beer late last year before kicking back to enjoy a quieter life. Mardi says that she is first and foremost a chef and cheffing is what she loves, and she always felt that only running her second business, Snowview Holiday Units, wasn’t challenging enough for her. After being forced to take a bit of time out in 2020 thanks to COVID, however, Mardi realised she was actually ready to slow down a bit.
OPEN MARCH LONG WEEKEND From 8am until late! For Breakfast Lunch & Dinner
“I’ve cracked my mid-life crisis, and realised I didn’t still want to be at the pub when I was 60. It was time for new ideas and fresh legs to come in - much like the person I was when I took over the pub all those years ago,” Mardi says. “I very much enjoyed being a publican. I loved cooking and loved my guests. It’s been a good 15 years and it’s nice now to be able to hand over the reigns to a new local family that will continue offering Settlers Tavern as a country pub for everyone.”
Welcome
Mardi says she was thrilled to be able to welcome the new owners - Ange and Warren Bell - who took over the pub on the 27th December 2020.
Having spent five years working at QT in Falls Creek, the last three as manager, Ange said she never envisioned running her own restaurant/hotel until fairly recently. “Before I worked at QT I’d never worked in hospitality, so I just jumped in the deep end and it’s probably the best thing I ever did - changing from corporate work to hospitality,” Ange says.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2021 Edition ELEVEN
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY many good people. As an adult, I don’t think I ever really thought about running my own restaurant until a couple of years ago I started thinking I should do this for myself.” With the Bell family - including their three teenage children, Kobe, Charlotte and Daniel – being regulars at Settlers for years, Ange says they’d always joke and say if it ever went up for sale, they’d buy it. When it eventually did, she sent the listing to her husband with a message saying ‘Just so you know, I’m buying the pub.’ Just over two months later, and already having a busy summer holidays under her belt, Ange says she’s absolutely loving the new venture. The whole family has been chipping in to help - even the kids, who have been busy waitressing, washing dishes and even mowing grass for the family’s new business. “It was crazy to start with, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I learn better when I have to do things quickly, the ins and outs of how everything works,” Ange says. “Everyone’s been great and all the locals that come regularly have been very welcoming. I’m much happier and only three minutes from home, which is much easier.” Ange is joined at Settlers with their brand new head chef, Scott Capell, who was formerly the head chef at QT. He’s currently working on a brand new winter menu, expected to be launched in time for the Easter holidays, but Ange reassures us that Parmy Army is here to stay - and is on offer every night the bistro is open. There’s always plenty happening, with meat raffles held for the Tawonga Bowling Club

raffle every Friday night, and the Tawonga Rural Fire Brigade every Saturday night. There’s also brand new cocktail specials every week, and an International Women’s Day champagne breakfast coming up on Tuesday, 9th March (more details on this page). If you’re looking for a venue for your next event, Settlers is also equipped to cater for any occasion. “We’ve already had a 50th birthday and some awards nights, and we can do weddings or external catering - we can do anything. Just come and have a chat to me with your ideas.” Ange says. The new owners also have big plans for the pub, but are currently waiting on the “dust to settle a little bit” before they get stuck into it. “We have some big plans for this winter, and then next summer we should be just about where I want to be with everything,” Ange says. “There’s so much of this building that doesn’t get used. I mean, the Stein Bar gets used occasionally, but it could be so great - we’ve got plans for that, so watch this space!” From the Ed - On behalf of our team and the wider community, we’d just like to thank Mardi and Quicky for 15 years of warm welcomes, friendly service and delicious meals. We hope you enjoy taking a step back, and wish you well in all your other endeavours! And also, the very best wishes for the future for Ange, the family and the team at Settlers. • Visit the

nternational Women’s Day has been recognised and celebrated on the 8th March each year since 1910.
Today, it is a global day to celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world. This year, the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre invites you to celebrate with a champagne breakfast at Settlers Tavern on Tuesday, 9th March (a day later due to the public holiday on the Monday). The guest speaker will be Dr Helen Haines MP, with entertainment from our own talented local, Rose Sexton. The event will kick off at 8:30am, and will finish around 10:30am. Tickets are $25 each, and are available from the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre (Ph: 03 5754 1166) and Settlers Tavern (Ph: 03 5754 4888). Everyone is invited, so get a table together and enjoy a morning out with friends! Just in case you were wondering, yes - there is an International Men’s Day too (although some may argue that it’s the other 364 days of the year). It’s celebrated each year on 19th November. •

DEDERANG PICNIC RACES A Fun Day Out!
H
orse racing is something a little more than a past-time in Australia. It involves business, owners, jockeys, grounds staff, bookies, lots and lots of punters. Almost every town has a track and at least once a year, there is a race meeting. The big city meetings are popular (like the Cup), but some-what overwhelming. That’s why a country Picnic Race Day is so appealing. As a result of extreme temperatures experienced during summer in recent years, the meeting has been moved from its traditional first Saturday in January. Therefore, this year's Mount Beauty & District Community Bank Dederang Races will take place on Saturday March 13th.

WHAT'S ON IN 2021
FALL LINES Step Up to Clean Up.
O
n Sunday 7th March, (this Sunday) Traverse Alpine Group will be hosting a Step Up to Clean Up event as part of the Clean Up Australia Campaign for 2021. It seems extraordinary now to think that the 30th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day (last year) took place as our very own Falls Creek was in the depths of the dangerous bushfires whilst other parts of our Country were ravaged by floods, and all at a time when talk of a pandemic was only just gaining traction. In the months that followed, reusable coffee cups became a no-go, restaurants were reduced to takeaways and the whipping out of single-use items like masks and sanitised wipes became the norm. Clean Up Australia’s message has never been more important, and we know that Australians everywhere are aching to respond and rise to the challenge on Sunday 7 March 2021.
We encourage you to meet us on Sunday morning at 10am at Frying Pan Inn for just an hour or two. Let’s remove as much rubbish as we can to keep Falls Creek looking beautiful for everyone. Free coffee and muffins for volunteers. We hope you will join us for a great morning, to support an important cause. For any queries, please call Nathan on 0491 492 482. •
