Appreciate What We Have!
SAY We’re In This Together
Looking back over the last couple of years, it is understandable that people are a little bit edgy. Starting with the fires in the summer of 2019 –2020, followed by a couple of years of the COVID-19 Pandemic (which saw a fair amount of mistrust and misinformation) and the pandemic is still floating around having an impact on people and the medical facilities.
The COVID issues have also had a serious impact on staffing levels in business –causing operators to have to close (when they would rather not) – which then flows into the community as something of a distraction or an inconvenience.
We then got through a very good snow season, with lots of visitors and great conditions right through – only to be followed up with floods on a national level creating havoc and causing loss of life. We here in this community have been a little protected from the floods, but we have experienced the continued rainfall and as we head in to the last week of Spring, it looks like continuing – and the persistent wet weather is having a negative impact on people’s lives. One young fit friend recently stated “I am sick of running in the rain!”
Others, (like your editor) are peed off at not being able to get out for fitness reasons and to enjoy our beautiful valley. It’s part fitness and part appreciation to keep the mind healthy.
Then, on top of all this we have a land slip closing the Bogong High Plains Road and having an enormous impact on the
operations of local businesses and the activities of the local community both in the Upper Kiewa Valley and at Falls Creek. See the up-to-date report on the next page of this edition.
The activities planned for Falls Creek this summer were the biggest and best yet –which would have produced a summer of fun and lots of visitation. Right now it is not looking that good with many events cancelled and some postponed.
Now, one does not have to be a rocket scientist to realise that all of the above is having an impact on our community – in the main it is a negative impact – being severe among some people and not too bad among others.
In realising this, could we not turn our
Project Coordinator
Pic – Roslyn Ann Photographyattention to how we deal with this in a positive manner? Let’s face it – we are not in Ukraine. No-one is dropping rockets on us – no-one is shooting at us. With a bit of luck we have a couple of dollars in the bank – and if we don’t, that’s the bank managers’ problem.
We do live in a beautiful community surround by a fabulous environment (which we can still enjoy as required). We have a lot of good mates around us – and it’s a fair bet they are feeling the same as us.
So, while life is a trifle stressful at the moment, just take a moment to consider those around us. Think about what they’re going through and how we can help or support them – and you know what – if we all did that – we’d all feel a lot better! •

Town Meeting Notes
Re Landslide
Here is some information provided by a local resident regarding the landslide at Bogong Village from the town meeting last week. Your editor feels these notes give a pretty good summary with some alternative ideas thrown in – all worthy of some thought.
* The landslide is not actually a landslide, it's a landstay, meaning that in a normal slide, all the debris would come down and would be moved away. In this case, the landslide has only partially come down, making it a very slow process to clear debris safely as any movement could cause the slip to complete its journey.
* The source or fault of the slip has not yet been found.
* Three bore holes are to be drilled from the top this week to discover more about where the slide started, if they can manually move/ encourage it to move safely and to understand better the geology of the area.
* From next week, long reach excavators will be able to access the debris from both sides as emergency access tracks have now been formalised.
* Next week will also see the arrival of a large remote controlled bulldozer from the Bendigo Mining area, this means that the middle of the debris can be tackled safely with no threat to human life.
* They cannot dig from the top as it is too unstable
* They have an unlimited budget to remove, make safe the side area and to reopen the road. As soon as the slide moves correctly, they will be able to regain access more quickly.
* Both the ICC and DoT have admitted that the process has been frustratingly slow and perhaps the required communication to the community was also not fast enough.
BOGONG HIGH PLAINS ROAD
* With access from both sides to remove debris, the work will continue, but more quickly.
* Expectation that the road should be open to one lane access by end Feb/March and if they have the possibility to open it sooner, they will absolutely do that.
* Why can't we use dynamite to blow it up? There are AGL tunnels and communication cables running through the area which would be compromised. Also the operators are trying to remove the debris instead of letting it go into the Bogong Village exclusion zone which also has three houses and some sheds in it. There is also a creek that should not be contaminated because the debris which is not made up of useful material will make its way into Lake Guy and cause problems of its own within the Hydro Electrical Scheme.
Probably best described as a disaster, the slip on the Bogong High Plains Road has caused nothing but grief – but it is something we will get over. Pic – Courtesy DoT
now lost two summers and two winters in three years. Please consider them when referring guests, friends and family to the mountain. Support them as best you can.
* While some events have been cancelled, several have been postponed where possible and it is hoped that a couple of mountain bike events may be able to be moved to Mount Beauty.
* Why is there no funding for businesses? The State Government is currently in caretaker mode with the election happening this weekend. Once the election has been finalised, the funding will be allocated. Both government parties are well across the requirements, the potential change of government will not affect the removal of the landslide.
* What is being done for future slides? The whole BHP road has been assessed for further risk areas and the assessment presented to government.
* It should be noted that whilst a majority of businesses choose to open only in winter, the businesses that open all year round and support the green season, have
* Gateway Health Wodonga, Wangaratta and Myrtleford, is a locally based support network and is able to offer assistance and support to business and people, and to help guide through funding requests when it becomes available.
* Hopefully some of this information is helpful and again, the process is painfully slow, but for those that want more current up to date information, the ICC will be providing links to more regular communication through the Alpine Shire. •

THE CHRISTMAS SHUFFLE
Enjoy Everything Locally
Last year, Simone from The Social Knot, Lyn Short from Tawonga South Post Office and Newsagency and this paper prepared a shop local campaign and with the help of many local businesses it proved to be a huge success – where we were able to give away $550 worth of vouchers (which went to local residents –purely as the luck of the draw). A voucher for $250 worth of advertising in this paper also went to a local business as a way of saying thank you for supporting the ‘Shop Local’ campaign and the same will apply for this year’s campaign. Now Lyn and this paper have joined forces and have attracted many more of the local businesses into the ‘Shop Local’ campaign to reward those that make the effort to support the local community.
As everyone is aware, Christmas is approaching way too quickly and it’s a no brainer when it comes to where to shop for your Christmas gifts this year - right here with our many fantastic local businesses! You can find just about everything you need, from clothing, toys and games through to homewares, tools and outdoors gear! Not to mention the wide range of unique and locally made gifts available. Thanks to the efforts on Lyn and the Tawonga South Store, many other businesses have now joined the campaign meaning that dining out and Christmas functions have the facility to be involved and offer their products and services. The businesses are (in alphabetical order) Alpine Outfitters; Crank Handle Brewery; Falls Creek Coaches; Gather & Harvest;
Grass Valley Restaurant; Lilli Pilli Café; Little Oddly; Mount Beauty Guardian Pharmacy; Mount Beauty Hardware & Drapery; North East Home Improvement Co; Old Tawonga Store; Rocky Valley Bikes & Snowsports; Sassy Road; Settlers Tavern; Ski Plus; SkiPlus; Swiss & Chips; Tawonga South Butchery; Tawonga South Newsagency & Post Office; Treats Café; Valley N Peaks and West Peak Hotel. Each business is providing a $50 voucher and all you have to do is make a purchase
of $30 or more to receive a ticket in the draw. And because there are many more businesses, this year we are offering three prizes, a first, a second, and a third. Winners will be announced after Christmas to give everyone maximum time to do their shopping – and we know some shoppers are just simply ‘last minute shoppers!’
As mentioned, as an added incentive and to support the businesses that are donating the vouchers, this paper will provide $250 worth of Free Advertising to one of these businesses. All of our local businesses support the community in many, many ways – through the sports clubs, through the schools – and this paper would like to give a bit back.
So please, support the businesses that support you, your children and this community – and let’s all have a very special Christmas! •
One Local Business
If you’ve paid a visit to Tawonga South Newsagency and Post Office lately, you may have felt like you’d stumbled right into Santa’s workshop with their incredible range of gifts for children.
You could say the arrival of three grandchildren has inspired owner, Lynne Short, to expand the shop’s offering when it comes to toys, but she’s done us all a favour - inside you’ll find a gorgeous range of boutique toys, books and games, with something for every age and interest. You’ll find the soft and cuddly kind, wooden toys and puzzles, educational games, beautiful books, arts and craft and more.
But the shop’s range of gifts doesn’t stop at children - there’s plenty for teenagers and adults too! Robert Gordon pottery, Emma Kate Co diaries and journals, The Somewhere Co cooler bags and picnic rugs, Celia Loves candles, new release novels, and more!
And if you can’t visit the shop during business hours, not to worry - late night Christmas shopping is happening yet again on Thursday, 8th December from 5pm until 8pm. With less than a month to go until Christmas, you can forget leaving your present shopping until the last minute. Not only can you get your shopping list crossed off in one evening (with a sneaky glass of bubbles in hand), and you can even get them wrapped too, with gift wrapping offered on the night for a gold coin donation and all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Layby is also available - pick your gifts now and pick them up later! •
Another Local Business
A vacuum cleaner? Better not. New ironing board? Not a chance!
Whether it’s your wife, girlfriend, mother, sister, daughter - or all of the above - finding the perfect Christmas present for the woman who has everything is not always easy. Well, unless you’re shopping at Sassy Road that is.
With over a decade of Christmases in store under her belt, owner Monika Hood is a seasoned expert when it comes to helping you find gifts for all the special ladies in your life.
If you’re not too sure on sizing when it comes to clothes, Moni said accessories are always a safe choice, such as a silk scarf, summer hat, handbag or wallet.
However if you’d like to avoid clothing and accessories altogether - not a problem! Sassy Road stocks a range of gorgeous natural make up and skin care from Luk Beautifood, luxury Fragonard perfumes all the way from France, and delicious smelling candles, hand creams and soaps from Urban Rituelle.
For those feeling brave and wishing to take on the task of gifting a whole new outfit to a special someone, it’s not actually anywhere
near as difficult as you’d think. With an eye for individual style, Moni can help you put together pieces that complement one another to create one fabulous look (and if you’re shopping for an existing Sassy customer, there’s a good chance Moni knows exactly what pieces they already have their eye on).
If all else fails, there is always the gift of shopping, with gift vouchers available so the lucky recipient can choose something they love at a later date.
And don’t forget to check out the variety of adorable gifts for babies, and the cutest clothes for kids ranging from newborn all the way up to eight years old.
Open weekdays from 10am until 4.30pm, and on Saturday from 10am until 2pm, you really can’t go wrong with a visit to Sassy Road for all your Christmas gifts. •

Playtime At The Pool!
Let's splash it up this summer at the Mount Beauty Swimming Pool as we welcome a new offering to the pool schedule. Running on Thursday mornings from 10am – 11:30am, babies, toddlers and their caregivers are invited to come down to the pool to splash, swim and socialise.
Playtime at the Pool will offer access to the baby pool and splash park as well as two swimming lanes for caregivers to utilise. The shady lawns of the pool offer the perfect spot for a picnic and once the sun decides to come out, there is nothing better than cooling off in the water!
Starting from Thursday 1st December, we look forward to seeing the youngest members of the community get together at the pool!
Please note: we will be sharing the pool facility with the FABS athletes, cost is $3 per session, and always remember - "your

Karaoke was born out of the idea of having fun and started with us around 2017 when we were first asked to do a private party and found that everyone had a good time.
At the time we were enjoying the live music scene at Zak’s Wine Bar and wanted to be part of it with both of us coming from a musical background: Richard having performed in cover bands in Melbourne and myself as part of choirs. We approached Stu to see if there would be any interest in holding a karaoke type of event. Having moved into Mount Beauty in 2014 we only knew a handful of people and he certainly didn’t know us however bravely agreed.
A Life to Remember
So mark your calendar: Friday 2nd December, 8pm, Mount Beauty Community
This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.
If you have any specific agenda items, please email http://joprothero@fallscreek.com.au. We look forward to seeing you all there. •
Zak’s Wine Bar became the home of karaoke with the nights becoming more than just singing but also dancing and dressing up for themed events. It was a fun night to meet up with friends, make new friends and for some, create local love stories.
Our vision for these events is to bring the community together and the events accessible to everybody by not having a cover charge. We try to include a variety of music to dance to, from rock and roll to ballroom styles like Latin (salsa and cha cha).
With Alamar/Zak’s changing hands we have found a new home at West Peak Hotel and
A celebration of Lyn’s Life will take place on Friday the 28th April 2017 in the Village Bowl at Falls Creek for anyone who wishes to attend and pay tribute. Some wine and a light BBQ will be provided, but we ask that you bring other beverages and also a plate to share. In the case of wet weather, a contingency plan will be in place. Friends are welcome to pass this invite on and it is understood that members of Lyn’s family will be in attendance. •

Mount Beauty Market
The move of the Mount Beauty & District Community Market recently to the Hydro Park has been seen as a little contentious. After being run by local identity Bev Bantick for in excess of 40 years, Bev’s retirement from the role was seen as something of an opportunity to make some changes with a view to growing the market and attracting more people to town. Knowing that we have a very good market in town on the first Saturday of each month – along with a wellstocked supermarket and lots of other fine retail establishments and wonderful food options should be an attraction for visitors and locals from down the valley as well as from that other valley. But change takes a bit to get used to.
The first market was held on Saturday 5th November with fun new stall holders while also maintaining plenty of existing elements

Workout 4 Women
Every day, five Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer –fortunately, every one of us can help. This November, No Woman Walks Alone.
Sign up to the Workout 4 Women challenge and commit to moving every day. Walk, run, or move any way you can over 4km to show your support for the five women diagnosed with ovarian cancer each day in Australia. Get your family and friends to sponsor your daily activity and raise money to help fund the critical work Ovarian Cancer Australia does.
How It Works. Workout 4 Women is a free fitness challenge you can take part in from anywhere or anytime - outside, at the gym, before work, on your lunch break with a friend, while walking the dog. Do it all in one go or break it up across your day. Sign up as an individual or register as part of a team and take on the challenge together.
Think this is a challenge for women only?
No way! We encourage men to join in and fundraise for the women in your lives. Anyone can take part.
Joy O’Connor has forwarded this note. Rob and I, and our whole family are once again supporting our daughter Annalei Warren who has ovarian cancer in the November challenge called Workout 4 Women.
Annalei at age 34 continues to have treatment and work as a Primary school teacher, whilst being supported by Ovarian Cancer Australia.
As well as still having to put up with some COVID Restrictions, this community, both Falls Creek and the Upper Kiewa Valley have been severely impacted by the land slip on the Bogong High Plains Road at Bogong Village and consequential road closure. With a five year survival rate of only 48% survival rate, ovarian cancer is Australia's deadliest female cancer. Every dollar you raise and kilometre you move will be for a woman who has received the life-changing news of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer that day. The money you raise will help Ovarian Cancer Australia provide personalised support, and create better outcomes for people affected by ovarian cancer.
Annalei and her husband Stew have been navigating the ups and downs of life with cancer, chemo and multiple surgeries for two years now, and hopefully some hope insight with a clinical trial about to start!
