Thanks Everybody!
2022 Victorian Tourism Awards.
Falls Creek Alpine Resort is extremely proud to be recognised in the 2022 Victorian Tourism Award as the Bronze winner in the Major Tourist Attraction category.
Falls Creek Alpine Resort are honoured to be in the company of such a high calibre of finalists, as there are so many wonderful tourism campaigns, events and experiences to explore across Victoria. A huge congratulations to the winner, Royal Botanic Gardens, for their consistently outstanding destination and now their entrance into the Hall of Fame.
Falls Creek Resort provides world-class alpine experiences that range from summer mountain biking, hiking and water activities, through to skiing and snowboarding in the winter. In the past two years Falls Creek has contended with the dire bushfires of a black summer resulting in evacuations and event cancellations at the resort, the 2020 winter season shutdown of Falls Creek for all but four days of the winter due to the pandemic, and three lengthy government mandated Covid-19 lockdowns throughout the 2021 winter season, and now a landslide disrupting events and visitation for summer 2022/23.
It is only through the extraordinary effort and commitment from all stakeholders that Falls Creek Resort has been able to continue its excellence in creating

adventurous fun and varied experiences for visitors. Recognition for this hard-earned work as finalists in this award is appreciated from everyone in the Falls Creek Resort and reaffirms it truly is a year-round top tourist destination.
The 2022 Victorian Tourism Awards were held on Thursday 1st December at an event gala at Centrepiece at Melbourne Park. More than 800 guests attended to honour the state's best tourism operators across 31 categories.
Stuart Smythe, CEO of FCAR, congratulated the winners and said, “Congratulations to Royal Botanic Gardens for their exceptional destination. It is an honour to be nominated among such a high calibre of entrants. Taking home bronze recognises the immense contribution made by our community, stakeholders, and business operators. They have remained steadfast and committed to delivering for our visitors and guests a
year-round mountain adventure experience unparalleled in the Australian Alps, despite the most challenging of circumstances in recent years.”
Lisa Logan, President of Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce said, “Victorian Tourism Awards is again a wonderful opportunity to showcase Falls Creek Alpine Resort as a major tourist attraction and destination. As a bronze winner, we can show we are a proud and strong community, committed to tourism excellence. This year these awards are particularly timely and hopefully will be a boost to moral. After three years of challenges, we are now facing yet another with the impact of a significant road closure due to a landslip. Once again, we thank the team at the Falls Creek Alpine Resort who have made this submission.”
Coupled with previous Bronze, Silver and Gold Tourism Awards, Falls Creek and its community can feel justifiably proud. • We

A Family Event
Carols by Candlelight is an institution in this country (see below) and in this town. Organised by the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club, our Carols involves a greater part of the community. The Mount Beauty and District Community Band; the Mount Beauty Singers, talented youngsters from the schools and many volunteers doing the work behind the scenes.
Norman Banks, a 3KZ radio announcer was walking home from his night-time radio shift on Christmas Eve in 1937, when he passed a window and saw an elderly woman inside sitting up in bed, listening to ‘Away in a Manger’ being played on the radio and singing along, with her face being lit by candlelight.
Wondering how many others spent Christmas alone, he had the idea to invite people to a group event and sing Christmas carols together by candlelight.
Carols by Candlelight was held in Alexandra Gardens from 1938 to 1958 and then moved to the newly constructed Sidney Myer Music Bowl in 1959.
It would be a pretty certain bet that not one adult out there does not remember fondly the times your parents took you to Carols by Candlelight. Whether it was in the King George Gardens in Wangaratta, in the Sydney Myer Music Bowl in Kings Domain, or outside the Community Centre in Mount Beauty, it doesn’t matter. Carols by Candlelight has special significance. Not only did you get to play with a live, yes a real live burning candle dripping down your shirt; but it meant that Santa was coming and Christmas morning was getting closer and closer.
The very simple act of getting together without too much formality, relaxing as a
community of families and singing some traditional Christmas Carols has a lot of merit – and it promotes a family atmosphere so beneficial for the kids – and the oldies. We will learn all too early in life that fairy tales aren’t real – but for a few short years let the kids be kids.
After a two year hiatus the organisers at the UKV Lions Club were really pleased to announce that Carols were back on –this year on Friday 16th December. The venue will be the Mount Beauty Secondary College, outside the Jessie Hollonds Studio Building – with the overflow spreading on to the Les Peart Oval.
Carols will start at approx 8pm, however families are encouraged gather from 6pm to share a picnic and find a comfy spot for the evenings music and songs. Candles will be on sale and song books available.
The community band will be in attendance. Students from Tawonga Primary and Tawonga Kinder will be singing and we hope the Mount Beauty Singers will be able to make it. Hopefully we’ll have some face painters also.
The Carols will kick off at 8pm and will be followed by a visit from none other than the very popular Santa Claus.
Everyone is encouraged all to bring your own blankets, rugs and chairs to make a great evening of it. After Santa’s visit, we are looking forward to an extended Carols by Candlelight community singalong.

BRAND
Little Oddly
Kind of quirky, absolutely magical and a little odd, Mount Beauty’s newest shop truly is a treasure trove of the weird and wonderful.
Located in Kiewa Crescent, Little Oddly was opened by Kylie Woods and Sarah Shuttleworth in July this year, and is the place to go for all things that are fun, fabulous and perhaps a tad peculiar. Kylie says the name ‘Little Oddly’ comes from her affectionately being called ‘a little odd’ ever since she was a child, and it’s what they pride the store on being.
From offensive cards and conversation starting books to divine smelling skincare and fun and funky jewellery, there is something exciting to discover everywhere you look.
Their range of children’s gifts are whimsical in nature; fabric crowns, timber swords and cross bows, play potions and pixies that encourage imaginative play, and are all carefully crafted by hand.
The deep green walls lined with luscious indoor plants give off jungle vibes, and the occasional giant golden snail will really have you feeling like you’ve stepped into a different kind of wonderland.
Some of the labels you’ll find include the ‘We The Wild,’ ‘BoPo Women,’ ‘The Little Growers,’ ‘The Wish Pixies,’ ‘Australian Native Food Co,’ and ‘Melbourne Bush Foods.’
Outside (out the back) you’ll find a small nursery, with Little Oddly stocking edible
natives, locally grown fruit trees, vegetable seedlings and herbs.
Kylie says they’ve tried to source their pieces from as many small makers and local artisans as possible in order to offer a point of difference in the Kiewa Valley.
“I like the more inappropriate things, while Sarah keeps it more consumer friendly,” Kylie laughs.
In the centre of the store you’ll find a laughing clown that looks like its fresh from a carnival game, kindly lent to them by Kylie’s cousin, Harry. Kylie agrees that while he’s pretty creepy looking, the clown is a real conversation starter.
“I love that - people come in and remember playing the clown game at the carnival. I love having interesting conversations with people that start from something they see in store,” Kylie says.
“When we first got the inappropriate badges in, the first one Sarah opened was probably the worst, but the laughs we’ve had with customers have been amazing.”
With something to suit all budgets, Little Oddly really is the perfect place to find gifts for your friends and family that are truly unique this Christmas.
Elsewhere in this edition is a great little thankyou note from the Tawonga Primary School, thanking many of our local businesses for the wonderful support of the recent end of year concert production.
Also, if you venture to West Peak on a Friday evening, many of the raffle prizes are donated by local businesses – enabling community organisations like the local CFA, the Dragon Boat Club, the UKV Lions, our local Red Cross and the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty to raise money which all goes back into the community.
Then we have the Mount Beauty FoodWorks Spirit of the Community which has returned hundreds of thousands of dollars to deserving organisations or individuals in and around this community.
These are just a couple of examples of our community working together to support each other. Recognising this fact, several members of the community last year initiated a very constructive ‘Shop Local’ campaign which involved many local businesses and proved to be a huge success.
This year it has grown significantly with many more businesses joining in and three lucky winners sharing the fist-full of shopping vouchers.
The businesses are (in alphabetical order) Alpine Outfitters; Crank Handle Brewery; Falls Creek Coaches; Gather & Harvest; Grass Valley Restaurant; Lilli Pilli Café; Little Oddly; Mountainside Gallery and Coffee shop; Mount Beauty Guardian
With 12 taps now installed we can offer a great range of fine ales and beers – all brewed on site!
Plus, we have the re-fillable ‘Growlers’ (2ltr) and ‘Squealers’ (1ltr) so you can take your favourite beer home with you!
And, for the peckish, we have tasty selection of Curley Fries, Toasties, Charcuterie, Nacho’s and mini sliders!

Each business is providing a voucher to the value of $30 or $50 (depending on the size of the business) and all you have to do is make a purchase of $30 or more to receive a ticket in the draw. And because there are many more businesses, this year we are offering three prizes, a first, a second, and a third. Winners will be announced after Christmas to give everyone maximum time to do their shopping – and we know some shoppers are just simply ‘last minute shoppers!’
There it is folks! Christmas is about caring – caring for the family caring for your friends and caring for the community. Do your bit and we will continue to enjoy the wonderful community we have – and lets all have a wonderful Christmas. •

TEMPORARY RAW WATER PIPELINE
For Mount Beauty
North East Water will be installing and testing a temporary emergency raw water pipeline system for Mount Beauty over the coming weeks. The pipeline is necessary as a contingency only should the town’s existing raw water line fail over summer.
Managing Director Jo Murdoch said with the recent and ongoing wet weather, there is an increased possibility of landslips damaging this crucial infrastructure.
AGL Hydro
“We’ve already had one recent slip near the current raw water line, which luckily was not impacted,” Ms Murdoch said.
Ms Murdoch added, “I want to assure everyone that the pump and pipework are temporary and for emergency situations only.”
FALL LINES
Hard Waste Collection
“That’s why it’s extremely important that we have a contingency in place to provide the town with water in the event of a failure, particularly in summer when demand is high. This temporary system will involve a diesel powered pump and suction hose setup at the end of the tailrace.
“An above ground pipeline will also be laid out from the tailrace to Embankment Drive and over to the Kiewa Valley Highway, then connect to our existing raw water pipeline that feeds the water treatment plant.”
Falls Creek Resort Management will be collecting hard waste on Wednesday 26th April - the day after ANZAC Day. Please see our Hard Waste Collection guidelines on the website, or if you require any additional information, please contact the FCRM Office on 03 5758 1200. • Summer Debrief
“Once tested, the pump and most of the pipeline will be removed and stored locally, and then if necessary can be reinstalled quickly.”
It has been a record year for visitation this summer and Resort Management would like to get your feedback on events, visitor demographic, mountain biking and general observations.
Therefore you are invited to join the relevant Resort Management personnel and other members of the community for a summer season debrief meeting.
This meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th April from 9:30am to around 11:30am in the Boardroom above Foodworks in QT.
If you have any specific agenda items, please email http://joprothero@fallscreek.com.au. We look forward to seeing you all there. •
“A decision on the location of a new permanent raw water pipeline is yet to be made.
We are currently undertaking an independent project assurance review of the locations shortlisted by the Community & Key Stakeholder Reference Group. We will provide an update on this project in the new year.”
“For now, we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we undertake the installation and testing for this temporary emergency contingency pipeline.”

Unique Christmas Gifts
With Christmas just around the corner, we here in the office at Falls thought we'd celebrate Falls Creek and its uniqueness by putting together our own Falls Creek Christmas Gift Guide.
There is so much fun to be had up here any time of the year that you can’t go past a gift voucher for a loved one this Christmas. Whether it be delicious donuts, dinner and drinks, a visit to the day spa, an adventure tour, scenic heli ride or rental voucher to test out new skis or boards, there are so many things to love.
With our beloved village difficult to get to this summer, it’s a great way to support the businesses and remind people to come visit as soon as they can.
One of the other great things about a gift
voucher is if you’re a little strapped for time, it’s an instant gift that you don’t need to traipse around the shops for. It’s right there in your inbox within minutes. Talk about stress-free.
Our Falls Creek Gift Guide will be available on www.fallscreek.com.au from Monday 12th December. And keep an eye on your inbox. Kind regards and great shopping to all of our Falls Creek family. • Falls Creek Alpine Resort.

Tawonga Primary Thanks
The talented team at the Tawonga Primary School raised plenty of funds for the school a couple of weeks back (Friday 18th of November) at their annual school production.
The local businesses were incredibly generous with their contributions to our raffle, making it our best yet. A huge thank you must go to:
Will at Tawonga South Butchery; Kiona at Mount Beauty Bakery; Kylie & Sarah at Little Oddly; Campbell at Mt Beauty Hardware and Drapery; Cat at ValleyNPeaks; Lee at Gather & Harvest; Peta at Mount Beauty Pharmacy, Nick and Karen at FoodWorks; Glenyse at Rocky Valley Bikes; Emma at Lilli Pilli; Natalie at Bird's Nest Hair Salon; Monika at Sassy Road; Pierre from Alpine Outfitters & Mount Beauty Post Office; Debbie and Lucy at Season's Cafe'; Simon and Liz at Treats Cafe' and Bogong Ski Centre; Alex and Duane at The Park; Lyn, Steve and Macca at Tawonga South Post Office; Mark and the team at Grass Valley; and Heath at Falls Creek Coaches.
How lucky we are to have such fabulous town support for our school. A huge thank you to everyone. This is another fine example of how important it is to do all of our Christmas shopping in our town. •
A Helpful Service
It is great to see a local resident doing just that little bit extra around the community. It started as an idea in Albury Wodonga, but since moving here, the need has been identified.
It involves taking rubbish/waste/broken goods etc to the tip. Many folk in town don’t have the facilities or means to get the unwanted stuff to the tip – so here is your answer.
You may have seen the new advert on page five of the previous edition. If not, it’s back in the paper again, this week again on page five. Give Tipman a call and he will do his best to help. Costs etc can be worked out on the phone or after the amount to be moved is ascertained. •
As well as still having to put up with some COVID Restrictions, this community, both Falls Creek and the Upper Kiewa Valley have been severely impacted by the land slip on the Bogong High Plains Road at Bogong Village and consequential road closure. The current feeling is that the road may not be open until February 2023.
This paper and the Falls Creek website will bring you up-to-date news as soon as we get it.
