VILLAGE AMENITY Reduced Vehicle Traffic
T
his year’s photo with this article is a shot of the new Prinoth track vehicle (known as the pumper) which should arrive at Falls Creek prior to Christmas. The role of this vehicle is both summer and winter and is vital to any firefighting operation in this village. Another vital aspect of firefighting in the village is the ability of our CFA vehicles to get to any point in the village to attack any threat. Hence the reason we have restricted access to the village and no parking in the village As a result of situations in previous summers, during the busy Christmas/ January period, Falls Creek village was advised by the CFA and Victoria Police that there were problems with too many vehicles in the village. Therefore, the village will be closed to parking from 5pm Friday 24th December to 8am Monday 10th January 2022. A half hour period will enable visitors ANZAC Day to drive to their accommodation, he years flash by; theunload numbers of service and then removeactual their returned vehicle to the personnel cardiminishes parking below the village. - and yet the respect
slightly less manoeuvrable than a normal vehicle of this size. God forbid – should a fire start anywhere in the village and the ‘pumper’ not be able to reach the site, one does not need a lot of imagination to know that it would be ‘good night nurse’ for pretty well the whole village. On the positive side, feedback from the community (residents and visitors alike) has been extremely positive. We are a family resort and the lack of vehicles in the village has produced a nicer ambience – with folk happy to wander most places, kids playing in the streets and enjoying riding their bicycles and scooters around the village. Also at this Christmas/January time of year, the village plays host to several hundred athletes and their coaches who spend a lot of time moving around the village on foot.

FALLS CREEK ACTIVITES Falls Creek Guides
T
he idea of Falls Creek Guides came about ten years ago after a trip to Chamonix ski touring and thinking we really don’t do much of that in Australia. Since then ski touring has become popular and so has mountain biking. The latest innovation in mountain biking is E- Bikes. So suddenly the idea of combining ski touring in winter and using the ease of Avanti E mountain bikes to access distant trail heads of Falls Creek become the perfect blend to be able to set up a year round guiding attraction to Falls Creek. Then main aim is provide an opportunity for people not that comfortable with the mountains, those looking for a special
occasion, celebrating the office year and those that wish to simply get to distant treks without the extra six km walk out from the Falls Creek Village. Mark ‘Macca’ Mc Donald has lived and worked in Falls Creek since the late 80’s and has assembled a team of local guides to assist in developing a new way to access, enjoy and explore our wonderful environment. There are a variety of tours and levels available, all groups are private group tours with a maximum of six per guide. The trips are all day, starting and finishing in the comfort of Nelse Lodge. The lunches are lovingly prepared by Genevieve and Martin from Nelse. Macca invites all to get out and explore with ease the beauty that surrounds us. For more information, go to: www. fallscreekguides.com.au •

SUMMER HOLIDAYS In the Kiewa Valley
S
ummer is a time we love. The kids are on holidays, the visitors have arrived and everything is rolling along nicely. After the lock-down, folk from the metropolitan area are heading to the hills – and they’re loving it. A couple last week from Geelong, had their E bikes and they were off exploring the Gravel Trails around Falls. If there is anything good that has come out of this COVID-19 disaster it is the fact that people genuinely seem to be caring for each other more and respecting each other more. The rush is not there, we’ll all get
looked after, and we are all in a very good place. Let’s keep it up while we enjoy these wonderful holidays. And what are we going to do?
Christmas Lights There are quite a few houses in town where the owners have done a brilliant job of putting up a wonderful display of Christmas Lights. Well done to all those people – and thankyou for exercising a true spirit of Christmas. At the time of going to print, there were about eight homes that have been brilliantly decorated and are worth the visit. There may be more, but your journo did not discover them prior to publication. •
The amount of work that goes into these fantastic displays if a credit to the people involved – and all of us get a thrill. Pic Ken Bell
Fishing It’s just one of those peaceful activities that can be enjoyed on your own or with the kids. The rivers are all good and the Pondage has trout and some ‘reddies.’

GREAT PROJECT, WRONG LOCATION By the West Kiewa Pump Station Action Group
A
reliable, clean water supply to the Upper Kiewa Valley is being pursued by North East Water (NEW). To secure this for the residents of Mount Beauty, Tawonga South and Tawonga, NEW have proposed to build a pumping shed and weir on a narrow strip of land adjoining the West Kiewa River on Embankment Drive. This location is where the community accesses the river for swimming and recreation. This proposal has angered many residents as the proposed site and the process by which it has been chosen by NEW has not taken into consideration the highly valued community recreational and visual qualities of this area, or the negative environmental impact. Securing a reliable water intake for the township is a great idea. But the proposed location of the pumping station and weir is where the community mostly access the river for swimming and recreation. It has been subject to thousands of volunteer hours to develop into a welcoming and usable space. The community are keen to preserve and enhance it for residents and visitors. There is also a resident platypus family at this location. We are keen to see their front yard preserved so they can continue to delight residents and visitors alike. Platypus are currently listed as a ‘vulnerable species’ and need all the help they can get to survive.
for the pumping station are planning a community meeting in January 2022 to solidify efforts to get NEW to listen to and respond to the community’s concerns – stay tuned for more details. The key goal is to build the pumping station at one of the many alternative locations that secures the raw water supply but does not impact on the local vulnerable fauna or the high-quality amenity and clean environment now offered by the recreational space on the banks of the West Kiewa River. Actions you can take right now are: • Sign the petition. The petition organisers encourage anyone who feels that the location of the pumping station needs to be relocated to a more suitable area to add their signatures – to find the petition, go to www.change.org and search for ‘Kiewa Valley,’ the petition will display and be ready for your signature and to share to your contacts. • Phone or email the offices of the following two members of parliament. Please note that our new local MP is Mr Tim McCurdy. He has already met us on site. He understands the issues and is already advocating for change. Our local representative in the Lower House (legislative assembly) in Victoria: Mr Tim McCurdy, MP 03 5721 6155 tim. mccurdy@parliament.vic.gov.au The Minister for Water in Victoria: Ms Lisa Neville, MP 03 9637 9654 lisa.neville@ parliament.vic.gov.au

• Join the community Facebook group “Great Project, Wrong Location - West Kiewa Pump Station Action Group” to keep up to date with news and required action to prevent the loss of our river access. • Attend the community meeting in January – stay tuned for time, date and location. •

Mittagundi
A
JAN 1
s an Outdoor Education Centre, Mittagundi was created in the late 70’s by a bloke called Ian Stapleton. It is and interesting place that gives young folk the opportunity to learn about life – because the place has no power, has a hot shower (if you light the boiler) and you grow your own food. Not counting the last couple of years, Mittagundi has a regular open weekend where visitors are invited to come to the camp and see how it runs – to experience some of those pioneering skills that are almost lost. The weekend starts with the Bush Dance at the Glen Wills hall on Friday 14th January and is followed by the open ‘Pioneers Skills’ day at Mittagundi on the 15th. Go to https://www.mittagundi.org.au/contact for further details or to book. •
Our Santa It is with a very saddened heart that your editor advises the community of the passing of this community’s favourite and very much loved Santa, our own Bill Sutton. As Santa, Bill filled many roles, but is probably best known for sitting on the roof of his garage in Valley Avenue and sliding bags of lollies down a pipe to the kids (that had been good).
Another example of the great role our Santa played in the community – photos with the kids. Pic – Lisa Drew
His property was always fabulously decorated and lit with the Christmas Spirit. Bill also spent time doing Santa family photos at Tawonga South Store and made a regular appearance at Carols by Candlelight for countless years. Any money he made from the lollies or donations, he always handed on to smaller local deserving causes. Bill was also heavily involved in local footy and many years back, involved in the ‘Night Trots’ which was part of our regular Mardi Gras. On behalf of the community, this paper would offer our condolences to Yvonne and the family – and we simply like to say “Thanks Santa for a great job done very well!” •
