A HUGE THANKS For Shopping Locally

T

he organisers of this (what turned out to be a) fabulous campaign to promote local shopping in the Upper Kiewa Valley prior to Christmas have been totally over-awed by the fantastic response. We (your editor) and this paper’s highly skilled digital marketing guru Simone Dowel thought we could announce the winners on Christmas Eve. Well a couple of things put the kybosh on that. New baby Charlie arrived in early October – and life therefore changed – with kids rightfully taking precedence over mundane work commitments and secondly, the brilliant response to the campaign from the

community – plus the usual Christmas rush and commitments. But, we are now in a position to make some announcements - except a little bit of background to set the scene. Shopping locally has many benefits and you don’t have to be Einstein to know that it’s good for the community and good for the individual. Local shops provide employment, make it easy for us to obtain the goods and services we require and local shops are the ones who always support the local clubs, charities and people in need.

Mittagundi

Drumming With Joe

As an Outdoor Education Centre, Mittagundi was created in the late 70’s by a bloke called Ian Stapleton. It is and interesting place that gives young folk the opportunity to learn about life – because the place has no power, has a hot shower (if you light the boiler) and you grow your own food.

Now here’s something a little different – ideally suited for kids from seven years to 12 years. It’s called ‘Drumming with Joe Davis’ and gives the kids and opportunity to ‘beat up a storm’

Can’t make it on the day? Talk to the library staff to see if there are any spare NGV resources to take home and craft in your own time.

Not counting the last couple of years, Mittagundi has a regular open weekend where visitors are invited to come to the camp and see how it runs – to experience some of those pioneering skills that are almost lost. The weekend was planned to start with the Bush Dance at the Glen Wills hall on Friday 14th January but this has been cancelled – (because of COVID-19

The djembe is a very popular hand drum from West Africa. It may be rope-tuned or mechanically tuned (Westernised). They may have goatskin heads (shaved or not) or synthetic heads. To sit around in a group and learn to hand drum can only be fun, Wednesday 19th January from 2:30pm. Booking recommended: Phone 03 5754 4305. •

MOUNT BEAUTY MURALS Project Makes Good

M

ount Beauty is in the process of being gifted three stunning public murals after the Alpine Shire Council recently appointed experienced artist Mike Makatron and his team to carry out the works. The crew arrived in town early last week and set about completing the three murals (between rain storms) which has seen the murals created to reflect the different aspects of the history of the Upper Kiewa Valley. Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said it was exciting to welcome an artist of Mike’s experience and talent to transform key spaces in a way that is respectful, beautiful and reflective of what makes the area unique.

The Bakery side wall of Hollonds Street toilets now have a theme which reflects and acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land we now know as Mount Beauty.

Learn more and view Mike’s work at https:// www.makatron.com.

The third mural has been created on the back of the Library, facing the pondage and will reflect the Mount Beauty community and the wonderful spirit of volunteering that keeps this community going. Cr Nicholas said four traditional owner groups have been approached for their input into the Hollonds Street toilet block mural. “We have had a response from Dhudhuroa Waywurru people, and while this work will not be aboriginal art but it is likely to be imagery which is more universal to all indigenous Australians,” she said.

THE RISE AND FALLS LOCAL TALENT Of a Would Be Runner

W

hen Julie’s running nemesis asked, “Do you want to do the Great Wall of China marathon with me?” she just laughed. How could she translate the 3 kilometre run segment of a triathlon into the 42.195 kilometres required for a marathon? After consideration of the question, Julie realised that a positive answer would allow her to partake in an event larger than her first marathon, an exciting travel adventure. She could now combine her new love for running with her existing passions of travel, food and the great outdoors. The Rise and Fall(s) of a Would be Runner is a collection of tales taking the reader through the highs and lows, misfortunes and successes of training and participating in organised marathons and solo runs and hikes across the globe. The stories will appeal to those with dreams and goals, recreational runners, travellers and those who like to persist with an activity. Julie is about to give some author talks in the North East Region with regards to the book

ALLAN FINDLAY Memorial Bursary 2022

A

llan J Findlay, better known as Big Al, was well known for the support he gave to many organisations and individuals, for connecting with folk of all ages and backgrounds, and for making a huge difference in the lives of so many. Allan moved to Porepunkah initially, and became involved in youth welfare via Bright P-12 College and the O & K Community Health, but his care of, and unselfish contribution to the wellbeing of others extended far beyond his job. He was a genuine friend to all who had the good fortune to have encountered him. He was a true local from 1999, until his un-timely death in 2019 at the age of 60. In recognition of Al’s life and his generous contributions to the community, his relentless efforts to support and mentor, and his unwavering dedication to assist anyone in need, the Allan J Findlay Memorial Bursary ($1000.00) was established by the Lions Club of Bright and the Rotary Club of Bright in 2020, but due to COVID-19, was not rolled out until 2021. The purpose of the Bursary is primarily to assist young people in continuing Al’s philosophy of selfless community

contribution, and to full-fill their aspirations of giving back to their community, whilst also commemorating the man himself. The $1000.00 bursary will be presented annually to assist the successful applicant to reach their goals and/or further their studies, and expand their networks to reach out and connect with others in their area of commitment and/or concern - something Al would humbly approve of. The Bursary is open to students in Years 9 to 12 levels, residing in the Alpine Shire – this includes young people who school out of the area, are home-schooled, or are no longer school-based. Applications for 2022 will be accepted any time between Friday 28.01.2022 and Saturday 26.03.2022. An independent selection panel will be established annually to consider and evaluate applications and to then present the Bursary. A member of the Lions Club of Bright, the Rotary Club of Bright, and an independent Community member will form the panel Executive. If you have any questions about this wonderful opportunity, please contact: Jenni - jennifer.sgambelloni@education.vic. gov.au or Geoff - smoko_shack@bigpond. com.au. •

PUBLIC NOTICE Our dear friend and recently departed Bill Sutton spent a lot of his working life in the SEC – especially in Power Station Tours and the Information Centre. In this role he greatly assisted Dr Ruth Lawrence in the preparation of her thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ This is a fantastic record of the area and in appreciation, a hard bound copy was given to Bill to be kept for this community. It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone. Your editor has purchased a digital copy from the University of Melbourne for reference purposes but we would all like to see the original hard-bound copy returned to the community. Phone 0400 350 488 if you can help.
