A MAJOR SUCCESS FEASTIVAL Falls Creek

T

he inaugural FEASTIVAL Falls Creek took place over last weekend with a massive line-up of music, art, comedy and food that captivated all our visitors. After two years of unforeseeable adversity, Falls Creek Resort Management was overjoyed to have been able to welcome a large number of guests safely into the resort to share in a festival of fun and entertainment. Over 1800 ticket holders attended Saturday’s Feast de Resistance – an evening of live music where Falls Creek’s Slalom Plaza was transformed into a welcoming FEASTIVAL of live music, street food and entertainment.

A MAJOR SUCCESS “The resort was buzzing, with events for everyone and a phenomenal line up of acts across multiple venues in the resort, bringing much needed visitation back to the mountain and the region. “We are grateful for the support of the Victorian and Commonwealth governments through the Alpine Business Support grant program to be able host such an event, in Australia’s premier Alpine Village.” James Eggleston, Events Coordinator for Falls Creek Resort Management, said, “We were so excited to bring a brand-new event to Falls Creek and North East Victoria. There have been a lot of parallels between the creative arts industry and the alpine resorts suffering from pandemic closures the past two years. We wanted to marry the two for a weekend of a variety of unique events in an incredible environment. It was fantastic to see it come together over the weekend.” “We have an incredible team with some fantastic support from our local stakeholders, and we were able to pull together 13 different events across eight different venues as part of FEASTIVAL Falls Creek.” “With one eye looking back to reflect and learn from our inaugural festival, the other eye is now looking forward to create and present an even bigger and better FEASTIVAL Falls Creek 2023.”

FEASTIVAL Falls Creek will be returning once again in 2023 – keep your diaries clear and we’ll see you in Falls Creek in summer 2023!

OLDINA SKI CLUB 50th Anniversary

A

n interesting time ahead for one of our oldest private ski clubs on the mountain.

March 22 and 23rd is the date set aside for Oldina Ski Club on Arlberg Street to welcome back to the mountain and the club quite a few foundation members from many locations around Australia. Not only from Victoria but SA, WA, NSW and Qld. Back in 1962, after attending National Fitness Ski Schools at Bogong in the then old Kiewa Construction workers accommodation that Oldina was given permission to occupy two of the old Nissan huts which were duly converted by member work parties to be accommodation for consecutive seasons while negotiations and then construction followed of the Club building in Arlberg Street.

Three of the original members, Lee Saunders, Ross Middleton, and Vic Tewman travelled from Melbourne to the mountain to choose the block of land before lease negotiations were finalised with the mountain management. The location chosen was outstanding as it is opposite a moss bed which meant the view will never be obstructed and so negotiations began with the mountain management, Government (for support) and the chosen bank. Very soon after a builder was commissioned, member work parties saw the construction come to fruition. Young school teachers, students, engineers, lawyers all worked hard to achieve the construction over one summer season.

That was 60 years ago and after two refurbishments and one extension (2nd storey

INTIMATE DINING EXPERIENCE

Our intimate personal dinners for small group are proving to be a favourite with regulars and visitors. Please feel free to contact us and discuss your requirements and timing. Regards, Roi and Sue.

Even after three taxing seasons because of Covid, the Club has continued to thrive under the current management committee who press hard for members to use the facilities during the summer season to experience all that Fall Creek now offers during the warmer months. Oldina proves that a Ski Club can succeed as long as there is a team to lead and set a successful direction. •

Dragon Boating Fourteen enthusiastic members of Mount Beauty Dragon Boat Club headed to Melbourne last Sunday (20th) to take part in the annual Lunar New Year Dragon Boat Festival at Docklands. Crews of 10 or 20 competed in races over 200m with a range of age groups and classes against teams from all over the State. As Mount Beauty is a small Club we often

combined with members Beechworth Golden Serpents, Brave Hearts Wodonga and Yarrawonga to be able enter as many events as possible. By the end of the day every club member had raced in a crew that had earned a medal. A fantastic achievement for a small regional club but which would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support of the other clubs in our region. Results: Silver Medals:

PUBLIC NOTICE Our dear friend and recently departed Bill Sutton spent a lot of his working life in the SEC – especially in Power Station Tours and the Information Centre. In this role he greatly assisted Dr Ruth Lawrence in the preparation of her thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ This is a fantastic record of the area and in appreciation, a hard bound copy was given to Bill to be kept for this community. It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone. Your editor has purchased a digital copy from the University of Melbourne for reference purposes but we would all like to see the original hardbound copy returned to the community. Phone 0400 350 488 if you can help.

AVE ATQUE VALE Peter Goddard

A

fter growing up in Strathmore Melbourne and travelling overseas for seven years Peter first came to Falls Creek with his younger brother Andrew in the late 60's and met Ros who was working at Cummings Ski Hire at the time. They started dating and were regular weekenders at Falls for a few years, still working in Melbourne. They got married in 1972 and went to Falls Creek to go into partnership with Ros's twin sister Lee and Barry Lawther to own and operate The Man for the next three years. Peter's roll was everything from Chef to Barman to Cleaner to DJ. In 1975 they decided to move down to Mount Beauty and Peter used his building skills to renovate an old plumbers shed on the KVH and add a little unit on the side to live - Ski Plus was born. They owned and operated Skiplus for the next 29 years until they sold to the King Family and Partners in 2004, who still run it today. Peter employed many of the locals and gave them their first jobs as young kids. A few years later Peter purchased the block of land next to the ski hire and built the Snowgum Motel, consisting of 12 rooms, swimming pool and a 4BR family home, very modern for its time. They owned and operated the two businesses until selling the motel to Joy and Peter Partington. It's great to see his legacies such as Ski Plus and Snowgum Motel still standing and trading today.

Peter was infamous for his legendary card nights on the hill with Luigi (AKA Rob Harwood), Lucky (John) Searles , JBL ( Barry Lawther ) and co. He also did a lot of building and renovations on Lodges and establishments like Les Chalet (where he fell a few stories with Yogi Moegel and survived with some minor injuries), The Man, re-roofing Mount Beauty hospital, (where he again fell off)! He also completed two Mount Beauty Marathons, and was an avid Golfer and Punter, horse racing in particular. Peter went sky diving over the mountains for his 70th birthday landing at Mount Beauty airport. Peter and Ros had three sons: Mark, Andrew & Tim that were all born in Mount Beauty hospital and went to school there before eventually moving into Albury in the early 90's and just doing the winters running the Ski Hire. Pete was a legend of Falls Creek/ Mt Beauty and such a character who will be remembered for his booming laugh and warm smile. He battled with cancerous brain tumours the last 15 months, and survived a major heart attack in Oct 2021. He passed away in Albury hospital 4th Feb. He will be missed! • Pictured: Peter Goddard – whose laugh was legendary! Pic – Courtesy the family
