MTB DE FEMME Returns with Grace…

T

he ethos of MTB de Femme is based on getting women riding the trails at Falls Creek in a friendly and safe environment. I wonder how many will remember the very first MTB de Femme back in January of 2016. The organisers hoped for about 35. About fifty ladies advised that they were coming and just on 75 turned up for a fabulous day. So many great comments like: “I had the best day yesterday! Woke up this morning wanting to come back! Everything was awesome… So well organised. The guides, the coffee makers, the staff at Milch and the bar we finished up at (BE Foodstore), the girls on bikes, the weather,

are now open!

It is therefore no surprise that just over 100 female mountain bike riders took to the trails at Falls Creek last weekend at the annual MTB de femme event, the first since 2019. The forecast of 20+mm of rain eventuated (28mm from 9:30 to 2pm) and conditions were far from ideal but that didn’t dampen spirts. You couldn’t wipe the smile off the ladies faces. It almost added to the experience with participants comparing ‘dirt freckles’ and who’s shoes were ‘squelching the most!’

CLOUD 9 REDEVELOPMENT Improved Green Facilities

T

he Victorian Minister for Tourism, the Hon Martin Pakula, and senior officials in the Victorian Tourism Industry, have given their “thumbs up” to the redevelopment of Cloud 9, the faded hospitality icon atop the Falls Creek snowfields. The Minister, CEO of Tourism North East, Bess Nolan-Cook and Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek visited Cloud 9 to be briefed on the redevelopment. The Minister said he is impressed with the plans put forward by Traverse Alpine Group, describing them as “really exciting” and expressed his support for the Cloud 9 redevelopment plan. Tourism North East CEO, Bess NolanCook agreed. “This will redefine the on-mountain visitor experience and further build Falls Creek’s credentials as one of Australia’s most iconic alpine destinations,” Ms Nolan-Cook said. Falls Creek Resort Management Board (FCRMB) unanimously supports the proposed works and considered them a significant development and benefit to resort patrons in the future. The internationally acclaimed tourism and hospitality operator Traverse Alpine Group (TAG) are moving forward with their ambitious plan to redevelop the iconic mountain top destination Cloud 9 at Falls Creek. Cloud 9 is the quad chair drive terminal and amenities hub at the top of the Halley’s Comet chairlift. When finished, the new building will be one of the greenest hospitality venues in the Australian snowfields. The extensive refurbishment of Cloud 9 will improve year-round access to the building, including during peak snow periods. The new access points will also make it much easier for disabled skiers to use the venue. A sheltered Wintergarden overlooking Mt Spion Kopje with a snow bar and public

facilities will provide new meeting places for snow sports enthusiasts and a yearround amenity for visitors outside the snow season. Project architect NMBW Architecture Studio and lead designers Sendit.Archi have delivered on the design brief to take advantage the dramatic valley and mountain views to the north of the site and bring more sunlight into the building, all while minimising the environmental footprint of the development. The new facilities will be constructed in sustainably sourced laminated timbers and all internal systems will be maximised for ecological efficiency, including industry-leading recycling of cooking oil, food waste, glass, and packaging. TAG principal Rosy Seaton says the company is excited to reimagine Cloud 9 with environmental performance central to

the design approach. “We will maintain our uncompromising commitment to excellence in our food and beverage offerings,” Rosy says, “but we won’t compromise on sustainability either.” Particular attention is being paid to reducing waste and minimising the carbon footprint of the operation. “Not only are we using green design principles,” says Rosy, “we apply the same thinking to our food preparation and our supply chain logistics.” “We take great pride in being communityminded,” says General Manager Shannon Exelby. “We harness the expertise of locals from the alpine region and northern Victoria in everything we do,” says Shannon. “With this in mind, we hope the rebuilt Cloud 9 will be a future gathering place for the community all year round.” •

WELCOME TO PEAKS Our 13th Event

M

ark Twain said the two most important days in your life are the day you’re born and the day you find out why. I think there’s a third day: it’s the day you find out how far. How far you can push yourself? How far you will go to help another person? For me ‘This is Peaks’. Since that first day back in 2010 when it rained sideways for 14 hours, I’ve had the privilege of seeing thousands of people on bikes push themselves to places they never thought possible. I’ve marvelled as they listen to that quiet voice whispering, “keep going to the next bend,” and ignore that loud voice shouting, “get in the sag.” I’ve also had the privilege of standing alongside an incredible team of people behind the scenes who leave nothing on the mountain as they make sure your dreams come true. They open another box of Winners bars when they’re hands are aching.

OPEN

They lift another sack of valet bags when they’re muscles are screaming. They force down another snack to give them the boost they need to take another phone call to get you back to the top of Falls. Peaks is a day in your life like no other. It’s one of those days when by finding out how far you can go, you actually find out who you are. • Craig Richards (CEO) “We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Victoria’s High Country as the original custodians of these lands. We acknowledge their unique ability to care for Country and deep spiritual connection to it, and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.”

From the CEO Unprecedented times of the past two years have been extraordinary. Nonetheless, the Peaks Challenge is an extraordinary event and Falls Creek is incredibly proud to be able to host this iconic ride right here in the heart of the Victorian High Country. Despite the challenges, the disruption and the frustration that we have all faced, your determination and dedicated training has bought you to the start line and to Australia’s premier all season resort. On behalf of the resort management board, our stakeholders and community, we are thrilled to have you here. Falls Creek and the high plains are nothing, if not spectacular, our mountain adventure activities are world class and our hospitality well renowned. Our Alpine Community looks forward to welcoming you today, and in the future; Summer or Winter! Good luck and enjoy the ride! •

PEAKS CHALLENGE Celebrating its 13th Year!

B

ack in the mid 2000’s AGL decided to dig a tunnel to run water from the McKay Creek Power Station to the new power station to be built underground at Bogong Village. This tunnel would be 6.5kilometres long and five metres in diameter. By my Handymath.com calculator, that works out to 12762,716,912 cubic metres of rock – which was rated at about 200mpa (with average concrete rated at 20 to 30 mpa). This incredible amount of rock – which had not been designated for any purpose –would surely be enough to seal the 32km of the Bogong High Plains Road from Falls Creek to Shannon Vale. And so the process started and as a result of that sealing – many activities have now been able to take place. The good news is that the 10.5km of Bogong High Plains Road from the East Gippsland Shire boundary (this side of Mt Cope), past Cope Hut, Wallace’s Hut and Watchbed Creek to the Rocky Valley Dam wall has now been re-sheeted with a hot-mix bitumen – and is beautiful to ride – making your trip home just that little bit more enjoyable. One of the first and still the biggest event is what was then called the Bicycle Network Three Peaks that took place on Sunday 7th March 2010. 1852 riders entered, with some electing to ride from Falls Creek to Dinner Plain and others electing to do the second half – Dinner Plain to Falls Creek. The weather on Saturday was great – but Sunday – Oh dear! It rained and it was cold – especially climbing Hotham –with many pulling out at Dinner Plain.

Over the years many locals have ridden the event. Names like Bernie McArdle, Andy Mero, Justin Hanlon, Tina Cook, Mitch Cook and Larry Franklin are just a few that come to mind. Then later we have Brian Peacock from Rocky Valley Bikes and Meredith Iaria; Ron Gallagher; Mandy Bland; Atilla Kerestes; Shaun Power (having done if five or six times) Kevin Bradley and Iain Morrison.

Having just completed 200km, with about 35km to go, riders turn left at Shannon Vale and… That sign on the road says ‘Seriously WTF? Over the last couple of years we have Pic – Courtesy Bicycle Network

been very lucky – being able to stage the Peaks after the fires in 2020 and before the lock-down – and then last year – whilst managing COVID-19. This year, as we go to press, it is looking much better. And as the weekend approaches, we must simply say thanks to the team at Bicycle Network and to all of the volunteers who make this event happen.

One thing we can do is welcome everyone who has made the effort and make sure they understand that we appreciate their support and the effort they have made to get here. Let’s all have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the challenge!!! •

MOUNT BEAUTY AIRPORT Upgrade Works Report

T

his report has been provided by Phil O'Bryan, Secretary of Mt Beauty Airport Management Association.

Construction began in early November 2021 and so did the rain for our very wet beginning to summer. The plan to begin on the northern extension did get underway but revisions for the slippery and soft conditions had to be implemented. 50 tonne tippers and heavy scrapers had to be downsized to continue work. The long established water courses, which winter winch drivers would be familiar with, continued to stream. After a two day dry ‘spell,’ I had the opportunity for a site visit and was happy to see no evidence of ground water ‘springing’ up to the cut surface – optimism re-established. A few wet weeks later, at a site visit, I was dismayed to see a spring. Turned out to be an abandoned asbestos water main channelling surface water to the cut; it was subsequently plugged and was deep enough to remain buried. Productivity was up and down whilst the construction crew came to grips with the site. A significant discovery was that patches of the northern extension sub-grade had insufficient bearing capacity for the runway. This required an immediate change of focus to the existing runway widening so that work continued whilst solutions were determined and trialled.

FALLS CREEK 2022 SEASONAL OPERATIONAL STAFF 4SITE Australia provides a range of services at Falls Creek Alpine Resort under contract of FCRM. 4SITE is looking for a range of experienced and enthusiastic staff to work in Falls Creek for the coming snow season. New faces are encouraged to apply. Staff with experience within the Resort, with appropriate skills and willingness to work in a range of positions, are encouraged to apply. Manual drivers licence essential and heavy vehicle and fork lift licence is preferred. Positions available are on a casual basis for the winter season and are dependent on the impact of Government COVID restrictions. • Senior Administration Officer

Most of you will be familiar with the very smooth, rounded rocks found around the Kiewa Valley. They are remnants from the time, millennia ago, of glaciers above this area. Smoothed by the abrasion of moving, regardless of size, the rocks are collectively known as ‘river gravel.’ The successful trial was for a 300mm thick layer of river gravel on top of a geotextile fabric and grid, topped with another geotech fabric. On top of that, the base and finishing layers for the runway are built. The revised construction program required additional funding from Alpine Shire Council (ASC) and the Federal Government of approximately $420,000. This was approved by ASC, early February, and work on the northern extension

Currently, work is underway on most parts of the airfield; the main focus is, of course, the whole runway length. Other current, parallel tasks include drainage both sides, the airside access (winch) track and fencing. Some runway strip profiling has begun but construction vehicle access suggests it’s mainly a task for later. Cross runway drainage of the open drain is completed. Drain pipe laying and access track behind the hangars is scheduled to begin mid-March. We have a major construction project underway. The completion date is still set at early May 2022. Look for photos on the YMBT or Upper Kiewa Facebook page. •

The Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association (UKVCA) raised safety concerns about speed limits in the Mount Beauty and Tawonga South CBD last year. In January 2022 the Association submitted a 237-signature petition to Council requesting a reduction in the speed limit in the Mount Beauty CBD from 50km/hour to 40km/ hour. Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said Council supports the request, which will bring Mount Beauty CBD in line with the 40km/hour limit currently in place in the Bright township. “Council is very supportive of a speed reduction, which will help to improve safety for community and visitors in Mount Beauty CBD, particularly in busy times when there is plenty of traffic and pedestrian movement,” she said. “We also think it’s important to recognise the safety implications of the speed limit through Tawonga South, and support a recommendation by Council officers to reduce that speed limit from 60km/hour to 50 km/hour.

The speed change in Tawonga South encompasses a length of the Kiewa Valley Highway of approximately 1200m, a stretch of road that is seeing increasing pedestrian and cyclist use. “As we welcome more residents and visitors, our townships are getting busier,” Cr Nicholas said. “This is particularly noticeable in our town centres, where the numbers of pedestrians, drivers and cyclists have increased over recent years. It can be challenging for pedestrians to get around town safely, and the challenge increases for the elderly and families with young children. Reducing these speed limits will create safer townships and boost community health and wellbeing by making walking and cycling more appealing.” Council officers have engaged with Victoria Police, Regional Roads Victoria and the Department of Transport, with all three organisations indicating support for the proposed changes in speed limits. Council will now work with the Department of Transport to formalise the changes, and keep the community informed of progress. Further new in this publication. •

“The safety and wellbeing of our community and visitors is our top priority, and this is a really positive step towards boosting safety for pedestrians, drivers and riders.”

There is no doubt that slowing the traffic through Tawonga South on a busy wet winter’s night would be a good thing. The number of drivers that park their cars and leave the headlights on while stationary is incredible – making it extremely difficult to see people crossing the road to the shops. Headlights are for when the vehicle is moving. Side lights or parking lights are there to make the vehicle visible while it is stationary. And if you can’t turn your headlights off while the vehicle is stationary, get back to the dealer and get them to show you how. Ed

2021 is the 50th year that the Bogong Campus will have been providing programs to students and plans were in place to celebrate this 50th anniversary in early November, 2021. But, COVID-19 put the Kybosh on that!

50th Anniversary

Our new date to celebrate the Outdoor School Bogong Campus 50th Birthday is Saturday March 26, 2022.

Upper Kiewa Valley residents who are feeling low because of Covid can attend a free one-hour information session at Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre at 10:30am on Tuesday, March 1 to hear about the New Access program that shows how you can you can climb out of the blues. New Access is an initiative of Beyond Blue and consists of a series of counselling sessions that are usually accessed by telephone. However, the Upper Kiewa Valley is lucky because Wangaratta-based health service Wellways is also delivering the program in person at the Neighbourhood Centre. Nicole Stephens will visit the Neighbourhood Centre every Tuesday and is happy to speak to people about ways to feel better individually or in friendly discussion groups. If you are not vaccinated, she can talk to you in the open air. Alternately, if you think you prefer using the telephone option she can help you to access that service. During the March 1 information session
