he years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes – and yet the respect increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.
ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.
T
Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong – yet unspoken – feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in

THE ALPINE CHALLENGE And We Mean a Challenge
W
ith distances of 100 mile; 100 km; 60 km; 42 km; 25 km; 16 km and 10 km, and a vertical elevation for the 100 mile event of over 7000 metres, the term ‘Challenge’ is not an under-statement. At this stage we are looking at around 260 entrants. The last couple of years have also been very challenging for the organisers, with a foot of snow a couple of days before the 2019 event, and bushfires restricting the course two years back. Then the last two events have been moved November to April to ensure they went ahead. This means that the 2022 event will actually be held November 26th to 28th. In order to enable more people to experience the magic of the Victorian Alps and savour the atmosphere of this unique event we have introduced a number of changes, adding in short course distances of 10/16/25 km, discontinuing the 36 km distance and replacing it with a new marathon distance taking in the best of the high plains whilst offering fantastic scenery on a challenging course. The Alpine Challenge is without doubt the toughest, most challenging, most spectacular and rewarding all mountain trail runs in Australia—if not the southern hemisphere over seven distances. The 100 mile (160 km) course takes in six major climbs with 7,600 m of ascent and descent including Mt Feathertop, Mt Hotham, Mt McKay, Spion Kopje, Mt Nelse and Victoria’s highest mountain, Mt Bogong plus five river crossings. The 100 km involves over 4,000 m of ascent and descent and the 60 km course over 2,000 m of ascent and descent, whilst for those undertaking the 42 km run you will have over 900 m of ascent. The three short distances—10/16/25 km—offer an opportunity to experience great trail running and some of the historic huts on single tracks
with great views over Heathy Spur and Rocky Valley Dam. It also offers the most challenging weather conditions, from intense heat during the day or snowstorms and driving rain, to subzero temperatures at night. Whilst the event organisers can take action to reduce risk to participants, they cannot eliminate it, as a result runners need to be prepared to run in all conditions or have the experience and sense to decide not to run at all on the day. Participants are advised to train for all conditions, including running in storms, snow and at night. Key Information: April Run Date: Saturday 23 April to Monday 25 April 2022 Location: Alpine National Park, Vic Start/Finish: Slalom Plaza, Falls Creek 100 mile/100 km Run Pre-race check in: 04:15am Start time: 04:30am Saturday 60 km/42 km Run Pre-race check in: 08:15am Start time: 08:30am Saturday 10 km/16 km/25 km Run Pre-race check in: 10:15am Start time: 10:30am Saturday A good time for the 100 mile would be about 25 hours, so be prepared to be up early to welcome the winners. A special thanks must go to the volunteers that make this even happen - especially the Alpine Search and Rescue Squad – and to show their appreciation the organisers have tipped around $5000 into their coffers to help with equipment. So, it you’re out on the high plains this weekend, give these guys a wrap! •

UKRAINE AND RUSSIA Some Background Truth
I
n 2008, talking to George W Bush, Putin said, “You know, Ukraine is not a nation.” That is WRONG and I would like to set the record straight. Kiev was founded in 482 as the capital of Kievan Rus. Moscow didn’t happen until 1147 in Muscovia or Muscovy – 665 years later. In 988, Kyiv was the cultural and commercial centre of Eastern Europe. Moscow was still almost 200 years away from being. Over the next 600 years Kievan Rus was constantly invaded by the fierce Asian Hordes (the Mongols of Genghis Khan), the Tatars and the Turks. The capital shifted from Kyiv to Lviv. By the mid17th century, the Cossacks fully restored Ukraine’s old grandeur and Kiev once again became the centre of cultural and political life. The first mention of the name ‘Ukraine’ is in the 1185 poem “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign against Polovtsy.” (That story was adapted by Alexander Borodin and performed as the opera “Prince Igor” in 1890.) 362 years later came the first mention of the name ‘Russia’ when Ivan the Terrible crowned himself Tzar and called his realm the Tzardom of Russia (in 1547). However, it wasn’t until 1721 that Peter 1 renamed Muscovia ‘Russia’ bringing all the tribes into the Russian empire - 536 years after Ukraine was named. Holodomor (1933)–literally meaning hunger (holod) and death (mor) – was the famine (genocide) created by Joseph Stalin where over eight million people died of starvation. Six million were Ukrainians. In 1929, Stalin ordered the collectivisation of farming. The kulaks, prosperous peasants, were forced to work on larger, supposedly more productive farms. Almost all the crops they produced would be given to the government at low prices to feed industrial workers. Most people didn’t want to leave their farms so teams of Communist agitators forced them off their land leaving behind their homes and personal property.
A dispossessed kulak and his family in front of their home in Udachne village in Donetsk (kulak = peasant wealthy enough to own a farm and hire labour)
The resisting kulaks were jailed, deported to Siberia or shot. The Ukrainian famine was made deadlier by a series of political decrees that were aimed only at Ukraine where resistance to collectivisation was greatest. The borders of the republic were sealed so the victims could not escape the famine. Villages were wiped out. To keep the mines and industries going, Stalin populated the empty villages with Russians – mostly along the eastern border - Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk. These are the areas Putin says belong to Russia. In the spring of 1933, Malcolm Muggeridge, the Manchester Guardian’s Moscow correspondent, discovered the existence of widespread famine in the Soviet Union. Travelling secretly through Ukraine and the North Caucasus, formerly the USSR bread basket, he was appalled at the scenes of mass starvation and piles of dead bodies. His three reports – smuggled out in a diplomatic bag to evade censorship – were published anonymously on 25, 27 and 28 March 1933.
We have a wonderful Ukrainian community in this country and we are also now receiving refugees fleeing the bloodshed in Europe. Give what you can, when you can. Ed

YOUR LOCAL PRACTICE -
FALL LINES Good Friday Success
T
he fact that Easter fell in the middle of both Victorian and NSW school holidays meant that the town was pretty busy – a great feeling to be getting back to some degree of normality – with guests enjoying everything we have to offer. Good Friday is also the traditional day that the state gets together and collects for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Our local Mount Beauty (Upper Kiewa Valley) Area Manager Chris Hollonds sadly passed away earlier this year – leaving a void. Fortunately, our manager at the local CBA picked up the reins and has taken over the role of managing the collection locally for the Royal Children’s Hospital. The good news is that Meryn garnered lots of support with help coming from the Tawonga CFA, the Mount Beauty CFA, the
local Cubs and Scouts, Alex and Dwayne Gardiner and their kids from ‘The Park, and the Frede family. Tawonga South Newsagency & Post Office added $248 to the tally thanks to an Easter egg raffle that saw first prize - a Melba’s Chocolates 2kg Easter egg - go to a very deserving winner, Tom Gardiner, who spent Good Friday raising money with his family at The Park by selling raffle tickets for an Easter hamper. Runners-up prizes - 1kg chocolate Easter bunnies - went to Mary Jones, Gael Little and Judy Damm.
ARIEL'S LAUNDRETTE OPEN: 8am - 8pm weekdays 9am - 7pm weekends & Public Holidays 41 Bogong High Plains Road, Mount Beauty · Ph: 0400 350 488
Overall it was a great effort with $11870 raised from this small community – and if my memory serves me correct, this figure is getting close to some of the record collections Chris was able to achieve. Well done everyone and thanks very much. •

PUBLIC NOTICE Our dear friend and recently departed Bill Sutton spent a lot of his working life in the SEC – especially in Power Station Tours and the Information Centre. In this role he greatly assisted Dr Ruth Lawrence in the preparation of her thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ This is a fantastic record of the area and in appreciation, a hard bound copy was given to Bill to be kept for this community. It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone. Your editor has purchased a digital copy from the University of Melbourne for reference purposes but we would all like to see the original hardbound copy returned to the community. Phone 0400 350 488 if you can help.

TRADE FAIR @ FALLS CREEK Prepare for Winter
E
ven in these some-what uncertain times, the good news is that the Trade Fair @ Falls Creek will go ahead on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th May at St Falls Resort (formerly QT). Times are: Tuesday 3rd 9:30am – 5:30pm. Wednesday 4th 9:30am – 4pm. The advent of the internet has changed the way many people do their shopping - much of it impulse buying. Oh sure, it opens up the suppliers’ market – giving many more people a look at the product – but does it really benefit the consumer? Now that topic could become a good longwinded dinner party discussion over another glass or two – and the real solution may still not be discovered – or learned! Internet shopping is convenient (even to the point where it could be making us lazy) –but one should be really savvy to make it work for us – as opposed to making money for the stores. Making a bigger purchase – like purchasing your stock for a busy winter season – requires a fair bit of planning and research. Sure, we can use the internet to research, but then we need to see, feel, touch, smell and/ or taste the product. And if it is equipment we are buying it would probably be smart to enjoy a comprehensive demonstration. Falls Creek has a well-deserved reputation as a ‘foodies’ mountain with quite a few excellent restaurants in the village and in the off-mountain town of Mount BeautyTawonga-Tawonga South. To continue to ‘grow’ this reputation, everything we do
needs to be a little bit of an improvement on last year –because if we don’t improve, then the others are going past us! Then there is the presentation and cleanliness of the premises - from the entrance to the amenities. New guests are casting a discerning eye over everything as they cruise in – and if the joint doesn’t stack up, the rest of the visit is not going to be as easy. And, of course price is a major consideration when buying stock, hardware, product or equipment. But, the old adage continues to ring true “You get what you pay for!” Buying quality product or produce ninety nine percent of the time means you will have less hassles and or hiccups – and as we all know, some of those hiccups come at the most inappropriate times. The Trade Fair @ Falls Creek began as the Falls Creek Expo and Trade Fair back in 1982 with 15 exhibiting companies displaying their wares at the Frying Pan Inn. The recognition that the Trade Fair was a needed event saw it grow to 110 companies in a 1200 square metre Hoecker (tent) on the Gully car park in 1992. Changes in management saw changes in the operation – to the point where it was moved away from Falls Creek and subsequently saw a decline in visitation. We are now back in Falls Creek and this year will see around 30 quality suppliers to the industry attending. The Trade Fair @ Falls Creek takes place here in Falls Creek for your benefit. Your support would be appreciated. Dates are: Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th of May. Further enquiries to: Mb 0400 350 488. •
