OUR RUNNING FESTIVAL Grows Even Better

S

ponsored by the Mount Beauty and District Community Bank, the Mount Beauty Marathon has grown and evolved over the last 40 or so years to the point where it is now known as the Mount Beauty Community Bank Running Festival. This, the 41st staging of the Running Festival will be based at the Les Peart Oval, next to the swimming pool, on Saturday 21st May. The Running Festival, originally called the Marathon then Half Marathon, was first run by a group of committed local runners in 1980. The event is now run by the Kangaroo Hoppet (with the help of many locals and community groups) and will be the only

RESILIENCE The Capacity to Recover Quickly from Difficulties

E

mergency Services and other community groups braved a cold morning to hold a winter safety and resilience demonstration on Saturday, 7 May at the Mount Beauty CFA Training Track. Demonstrations were held throughout the morning, including the ever popular – and entertaining - Kevin Cosgriff from Parks Victoria using his mobile fire table to show how quickly bushfires can travel through the valley. CFA members used the ‘Jaws of Life’ on a donated motor vehicle. This demonstration was a very intense procedure and many watching said they did not realise how arduous rescuing a person from a damaged vehicle can be. Mount Beauty Fire Brigade is one of the few rural brigades that have essential life-saving equipment including the ‘Jaws of Life’. CFA Tawonga demonstrated how the water canon can project a wide range of sprays from the truck along with how the firefighters go into ‘self-preservation mode’ if they are overcome by bushfire. Red Cross was also in attendance, talking to young children and families about how they should prepare to leave their homes in the event of an emergency. The children were encouraged to draw pictures on a pillowcase of items they would like to have with them to help keep them calm if they have to evacuate the valley. SES reminded people that clearing gutters in winter is important to make sure houses don’t flood when it pours with rain. The groups involved were CFA Mount Beauty (eight participants), CFA

Tawonga (three participants), Ambulance Victoria (three participants), SES (three participants), Parks Victoria (one very active participant), Red Cross ladies (five participants), Rotary (five participants), KCC (four participants), and Virginia Vinden-Price and Hilary Basile representing TREK (Totally Renewable Energy Kiewa). Together they worked to present a day of preparedness, verbal and written information, demonstrations and calico bags full of information and giveaways to families who attended. In spite of the cold and threat of rain, the event was well attended. Another positive outcome mentioned by several emergency service members was the opportunity to network. SES volunteer Rob Spargo said, “We don’t often get a chance to catch up or meet new people giving their time because when there is an emergency we concentrate on getting the job done.” Event organisers - KCC (Keep Calm Committee) operating under the umbrella of the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre - along with the emergency services who participated are keen to keep our community and valley prepared and resilient against potential future disasters. The day was made possible with funding from FRRR, BRV and local connections. The smell of sausages and hamburgers wafted from the Rotary barbeque and lovely coffee and hot chocolate was supplied by Postman John from his mobile caravan (assisted by Vicki Burton). KCC plans to hold another community gathering later in the year prior to the upcoming bushfire season. The date will be announced soon. •

Local CFA Rescue operators are about to cut the roof off this ‘crashed’ vehicle to assist in getting injured personnel out. The vehicle is chocked up, loose or swinging objects have been secured and the ‘jaws of life’ is just about to be deployed to cut the C pillar. Pic – Ken Bell

OUR CHRISTMAS TREE Community Update

T

his time last year we (the Christmas Tree committee) were plaguing the life out of the community about a Christmas Tree. A thousand thanks were given to the thousand plus forms of support that we received. But we have never really given a satisfactory breakdown of just what our community did to make our fabulous Christmas Tree happen. In terms of donations, the community and its service groups raised $8915.00 and that was huge! In terms of visible, tangible and moral support… well that was immeasurable! These elements of support together gave the committee enormous assistance in grant applications and we were successful in two a Bushfire Victoria grant and a Community Grant from the Shire. The Bushfire Grant Victoria awarded us with the exact cost of the Christmas Tree and it’s decorations. ($12,999.00). The Shire Community Grant awarded us $9330.00. In all the committee spent $20,894.00. That was the whole lot… The tree; the fence; the decorations: insurance; transport; delivery; extra decorations; extra delivery; reindeer and every other little thing. We actually ended up with too much money and a portion of the Community grant was repaid to the Shire. However, The Shire was more than helpful and generous and jumped around with incredible speed and support and provided us with a slab base and the power supply for the tree for now and the future. After the repayment, we still had funds that allowed us to buy the reindeer and a second set of decorations for the future. Whatever the providing company does they cannot

stop the effects of our powerful sun and all decorations fade in a few years. Our other ongoing costs are insurance and storage. There were multitudinous individuals who ‘did’ things for us to assist with the success of the project. The Bendigo Bank in all sorts of ways. Ron Crawford for the free use of his machine to put up the tree. Pierre Azemat (at the post Office) for lots of things. Campbell and Karen Ford (at the Hardware) for pegs for the reindeers. Bruce Addinsall for help with storage. Take Out Cafe. Elene Wood for the fantastic cake we raffled. Mardi Lucas for a fabulous raffle prize. Rick Cappellari for offering to help with storage if needed. James Taylor for a heap of organisational and construction help plus of course the team of construction helpers. Jenny Corser for endless assistance with the grant (make sure you have all of your little ducks in a row). Will Jeremy(Shire) for loads of help with Alpine Shire liaison and support.

Michael Buckley (Shire) for all that help with tree location under impossible time constraints. Adam Clarke (Shire) who made all of those constraints seem negligible and got the jobs done. Alex Gardiner for our coordination with street decoration and tree ‘putting up’. Who did I miss? However, we should especially mention Trish at the Neighbourhood Centre. In the very beginning she agreed to auspice us and give us the opportunity to pursue this venture for the community. We are now our own legal entity with our own ABN. We have funds to keep us going but will need to raise some money each year for insurance and storage. Stand by! Our aim now is to purchase a different coloured set of decorations. All in good time and when the Community has recovered from last year’s onslaught! If anybody is genuinely interested in the precise figures on any part of the Christmas Tree process you are very welcome to contact Sandra Eldridge (0407 250 129) to inspect the very simple accounts. •

BUSHFIRE RECOVERY GRANTS PROGRAM Mount Beauty Pump Track Project

R

ecently Team Mount Beauty applied for and were successful recipients of a Black Summer Bushfire Recovery grant. The club has been awarded over $300,000 to complete a sealed pump track in the Mount Beauty Community Recreation Reserve. Pump Tracks are both playgrounds and training facilities for bikers, skateboarders or scooter riders of all skill levels. Asphalted tracks are hotspots for all kinds of riders who seek a fun and action-filled sports experience. Pump Tracks are highly popular destinations that become a hive of community activity. The sealed pump track will not only cater to the cycling community but to all skate park users and any other wheeled enthusiasts as well, meeting the needs of a greater demographic of visitor and community members and bringing a broader spectrum of the community together.

It is proposed that the expansion of our outdoor recreation facilities will add to our community health and wellbeing through increased access to outdoor activity for all abilities and ages. This project will provide access to an engaging, low cost recreation facility that will promote social connection and unique physical activity that is otherwise be inaccessible to most young people in our community. The new pump track will add to the complement of existing bike facilities in Mount Beauty creating a premier cycling destination for all cycling tourists and their families, increasing visitation and improving economy for businesses in our town.

The new Omeo Pump Track. Pic - courtesy of rdv.vic.gov.au/news/omeo-mountain-bike-destination-opening-of-pump-and-skills-track.

Team Mount Beauty will be partnered with the Alpine Shire in delivering this new asset on the disused end of the current BMX track. The pump track will cater to all user abilities and working with Alpine Shire Council, we also hope to improve the ease of maintenance of this council asset in the future.

Initial site preparation works will be underway in the coming months to allow earthworks to settle over the winter months. During this time the project committee will be working through the planning and consultation phase with the trail building company that is the successful tenderer.

The current concept designs were used for funding purposes and although the final design may be similar this is not the planned design or company necessarily being used to build the track. The pump track is expected to be completed early 2023. •

LOCAL TALENT OUR RESPONSIBILITY …Is to Vote Correctly

T

his paper has steered away from politics, has not uttered a word, for the last 42 years, But the current state of play and the insidious amount of media hype has forced a comment or two. It is very true that no local reader of this paper will be voting for Prime Minister Scott Morrison (Liberal – Division of Cook) or Opposition Leader, Anthony Albanese (Labor – Division of Grayndler). But it is easier for the National Media to focus on these two politicians instead of representing their clients (the voting public of this country) and talking about the individual candidates in each electorate. But that ain’t gonna happen. So how do we fix it? Instead of screaming at the Tele – or worse, switching to some third-rate movie every time Scomo or Albo come on, we actually get off the couch and see if we can’t find our local candidates and

YOUR LOCAL PRACTICE -

FALL LINES Music Festival Wrap The 2022 Mount Beauty Music Festival kicked off on Saturday 23rd of April at the Les Peart Oval. The festival featured a full line-up of live music on the truck stage, plus market stalls and food stalls. The LineDancing ladies got people up and in the mood, and taught them a few dance moves. It was great to see people bring the family down and spending the afternoon on the grass listening to music, catching up with friends, and enjoying a tasty bite and local brew. Sunday was a full morning of 60 plus cars displayed on the oval, drivers had come from all over the north east to get their hands on a trophy. The Mount Beauty Car Club assisted us on the day with registrations. Judging was complete around midday - the categories were pre 1955, post 1955, Tow & Show, American Muscle, Australian Muscle and Bikes.

Two ladies from Melbourne won our Valencia guitar donated by Megas Music Wodonga. Add to this the kids coming up to the mike and telling jokes or showing off their dance moves. Overall a great weekend, special thanks to the following sponsors for supporting the Mount Beauty Music Festival Luke Hunter from Hunter Media does great images of cars – in this Special Thanks to Alpine case, some of the cars judged winners at this year’s Tow and Show Shire, Hume Bank, Gundowring part of the Music Festival. ARIEL'S LAUNDRETTE

The truck stage was presented with Who's Got Talent where we had six entrants for our talent competition – and who spent the morning entertaining the crowd. MC Charlie Brown and Miss Mikaylia amused the audience, and encouraged and supported entrants with backing guitar and vocals.

It has been lent out and not returned and this notice will hopefully remind someone.
