BIKING ON THE HIGH PLAINS And Falls Creek
I
t’s been a tough winter (understatement!). But there is so much more to this area and the rest of the year. Summer is that part of the year we call ‘green season’ – from the end of this winter to the start of next winter and during this period, there are a myriad of activities, interests and events that you can enjoy. Here is a little bit on the biking you can enjoy during the green season.
Mountain Biking Falls Creek has developed an excellent reputation for our mountain bike trails. There is lots of diversity and graded single tracks that enable novice riders to move into the sport, learn the area and progress as the confidence builds. Then there is the full testosterone stuff – heart pumping adrenaline generating trails that make you work – and enjoy! With over 40 km of trails, there is plenty for everyone. Add to this the regular Blue Dirt Mountain
Bike Shuttle service which will get you to the top of the Summit and pick you up at the bottom of Flowtown – and you’re in heaven! If you happen to do any damage, we have our ‘Bike Patrol’ – fully qualified Ski Patrol First Aiders who can handle a bike, a chain-saw and a bandage – and they are on duty all the time that Blue Dirt are running shuttles. One other major advantage at Falls Creek is that just about all of the trails lead you back to the village – and from the bottom of Flowtown at Howman’s Gap, you can ride back up the road or be picked up by a friend or family – without getting off road.
Peaceful Riding If the testosterone trails are not your cup of tea, then Falls Creek is surrounded by about 30km of Aqueduct Trails, management vehicle tracks and connecting dirt roads – all suitable for a leisurely ride on your bikes with the kids. An Aqueduct Trail is actually a vehicle track that runs along the side of a man-made aqueduct which is carrying water from one place to another. They were built

as part of the Kiewa Hydro-electric Scheme and form an integral part of the water supply for generating environmentally-friendly electricity. These trails give you access to the Bogong High Plains and can take you to places for wonderful photos and picnics. THANKS TEAM Tough Yet Good
T
here have been many statements put together to describe this season. Just about all of our business operators and staff have had to draw heavily upon reserves of strength and resilience to get through – and we are still here. A little prayer your editor picked up somewhere seems appropriate: “Lord, give me the strength to change the things I can; the grace to accept the things I cannot; and the wisdom to know the difference!” After the toughest couple of years this area has ever seen (not forgetting that millions of others are also doing it tough) let’s look at what we have: No-one is dropping bombs on us or trying to shoot us! We have a couple of dollars in the bank – and if we don’t, that’s the bank manager’s problem! We live in a wonderful part of the world – surrounded by a pristine environment with beautiful clean air and
]
summit ridge
crystal clear water. And if we are feeling a little down, we have a lot of great mates around us where we can go and have a chat or a beer and talk about the problems. Many among us have taken on new challenges – like walking to the top of the hill and getting a couple of runs in – or doing the Hoppet in our own distinctive way – or just making the most of the area and the two hours to get in much needed and appreciated exercise! We are all very lucky and very fortunate to be living in this area. That’s the truth! The season has been hard, but we are through it. This edition is the last for this winter, covering the last ten day period from Friday 24th to Sunday 3rd October, the official close of the season. The next edition will be released on Friday 15th October with a lead in to what we can look forward to over summer. Activities like Ignition and the mountain biking shuttles, the Mile High Dragon Boat Regatta (in November this year), Trails, Tales and Tucker guided walks, Peaks Challenge, the Alpine Challenge and many other fabulous events to get involved in touch wood!

In closing, there are many people and businesses to thank. The advertisers: These are the people that make this paper. Without the advertisers, we would not have a paper – and your support of those advertisers is critical to the success of this paper. The readers: There is nothing nicer that the kind comment from residents and members of the community who just say “Thanks, we love reading your paper” That makes our day. And if a couple of people are expressing this sentiment, then we know there are many more out there feeling the same way. The Team: Simone (The Social Knot) who does the digital stuff, and the posts on Facebook, and writes the occasional very good article, thanks for your fabulous work.

This Week in Falls Creek and Mount Beauty has just completed 42 years of being published weekly in winter. It is unique to Falls Creek Resort and to the Falls Creek community and not another ski resort in this country has a publication like it. While reading on line, you can also click on any listed website in any advert or article and be taken straight to that site.

THANKS TEAM Lee, the graphic designer at Specialty Press, who does the layout and the creative stuff with the paper and the adverts, your work is greatly appreciated - thankyou. The whole team at Specialty Press who do a fabulous job and have never let the paper down – thank you so much. Over the years we have had many fine comments on the fact that the paper has always had very good photos on the cover and throughout. The reason for that is simple. Some very professional photographers have supplied photos for the paper. A very appreciative thanks to Chris Hocking, Charlie Brown, the team at Tops Shots photography, Ern Reeders (for the bird shots). Phil Rumpff (orchid photos) and Roslyn Anne for the Kiewa Valley shots. My delivery team, Ava, Ben W, Ben N, Teagan, Lilly, Pepper and the rest of the kids who do a great job in all weather conditions – thanks for your great efforts. To the Team at ATS who were very helpful in getting the kids up and around the mountain with their packs. To best mate Noel who delivers the Mount Beauty Tawonga South and Tawonga area, your help is much appreciated – and to the team at Geoff’s Freight who deliver the paper to the RMB’s between Tawonga and Dederang, thank you also.

NEW BUSINESS Great Enthusiasm
T
here is an old saying that goes like “Give a man a job he loves and he will never work again!” And this suits Will Hood who has just taken over the Tawonga South Butchery. Will, his wife Monica and their two young kids arrived in the valley in the early 2000’s – initially as part of the team that ran the Bogong Hotel and made it a fun pub to visit. In 2004 they purchased property out the back, calling it Mt Emu Farm. It was here that Will and Moni raised their kids and developed the property – to the extent where, over the last ten years they have been hosting functions like weddings, birthday parties and buck’s nights – and doing the catering. It was this process that leads Will to the butchering industry.
The property at Mt Emu Farm was ideal to raise stock and Will set up a butchering department where he could slaughter, skin, eviscerate, break down and prepare the meat for consumption – to be enjoyed by guests at many of the functions.
Will is passionate about the ‘Paddock to Plate’ aspect of where your food comes from and is very keen to talk with local Interestingly, Will’s great grandfather was suppliers about their product and retailing a butcher his grandfather was a camp Hardand Waste Collection it through the business. WHAT'S ON IN 2021
AUSTRALIAN WATTLE There’s a wattle blooming every day, somewhere in our land, From the misty alpine passes to the burning desert sand. From the Eastern coastal fringes where the wattle grows the best, To the lonely rugged gorges of the Kimberley out West.
Sprigs of wattle went along when Aussies left for war, To the poppyfields of Flanders, beneath the cannons’ roar. The Diggers kept the wattle close --- those brave and hardened men, And the wattle was their talisman, to get back home again.
The wattle is our symbol, and a hundred years before Henry Lawson wrote of the shearers’ strikes he saw--“We’ll make the tyrants feel the sting o’ those that they would throttle, They needn’t say the fault is ours if blood should stain the wattle.” Of all the native trees the wattle wins the test, For it blooms in golden trusses and the wild birds make their nest. High up in the canopy, well in from the borders, Snug and safe from mankind and aerial marauders.
Australians love the wattle, and the mighty river gums, That grow up on the Murray, and no matter what fate comes, No matter where we travel, no matter where we roam It’s the Wattle and the Redgum that draw our hearts back home. Phantom
