FROM THE CEO then, if also booked mid-week and not on weekends, there is a pretty good chance you’ll have fewer challenges getting into the resort and onto the snow. While you’re on line, don’t forget to book somewhere to eat… with a smorgasbord of options to choose from there’s ample cuisine to suit all tastes and budgets. Life is too short to queue for food… and we have plenty of choices at Falls Creek to save that hassle. Speaking of food…

Foodie Tip of the Week (x2) Huski Kitchen (03 5758 3863) welcomes you with a warm fireplace and the full array of Asian aroma that automatically makes you hungry. Any menu that has chilli icons and disclaimers about how much punch the food delivers is always a winner for me. Noting that the chef and his team can deliver all the flavours of the menu and cater to all diners needs, hot or not. To this effect, we chose the chefs selection menu, with two hungry young men in tow, substituting in the Pad Thai noodles raised the carb intake and stopped them short of desert (seven courses later!). Of note too is the wine list, some great regional selections. Booking is essential.

Someplace Else (03 5758 3252) is a bit of a tradition in our house over the long weekend, (even though we dropped in pre-weekend)… and with its pan Asian menu, it’s ideal for picking a few plates and sharing. We gorged on Bao’s… the Teriyaki Mushroom, and the Crispy Pork… both sensational. For mains, the Twice Cooked Pork Belly and the Chargrilled Scotch Fillet (cooked to medium rare perfection) were both amply filling. The chargrilled broccoli ensured some greens were had… but no desert was needed, as tempting as they are… we were stuffed! If the menu choices are too much… eight or more adults can share a $68 per head banquet and take the pressure off making tough decisions. Note both venues are online bookable or via OpenTable. Enjoy. • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management

BETTER SKIING And Bam! It’s A Cold, Cold Winter!

T

he recent weather has everyone shivering, and some of our toes turning blue. Cold toes are a common problem in ski boots, and a most unpleasant way to spend your day on the mountain. There are many causes of cold and numb toes in ski boots. Luckily most of the time it’s a problem that can be fixed. Fix Issues in Your Ski Boots Doing your boots up too tight can squash arteries and capillaries in your feet, which stops the blood getting to your toes. The most common site is across the top of your foot (the dorsalis pedis artery). Another area that can block blood flow is behind the inside ankle bone (the tibial artery). This is a more complicated cause and is usually because there is too much padding in that area.

SOMEPLACE ELSE Tuesday to Sunday from 4.30pm Bookings Essential

Circulation Blood flow problems to the feet can range from something minor like you “just feel the cold,” to Reynaud's disease, and peripheral vascular disease (PVD), in which case issues can be quite serious and lead to nasty complications. People with Reynaud's disease should make sure they have a well-fitted boot and ski orthotic to ensure the best blood flow to the foot. Once this is done, you should also consider a boot heater.

hot and can flatten out and deform your ski orthotics or shell modifications. Get a ski orthotic for your boots. Until your foot is supported in the optimal position and stabilised in the boot by a ski orthotic, no other boot changes will be very beneficial. Holding your foot in its best alignment will improve blood flow and reduced localised pressure. Find a good boot-fitter that understands all of the issues above and can help make sure your boot is working for you.

What Should I Do?

It's Just Dam Cold!

Wear a thin, woollen or synthetic-blend sock designed for ski boots. A thick sock's fabric will just get squished in your boot and hold your perspiration against your skin, making the sock wet and your skin cold.

If you've checked and addressed all the above issues, then it's likely that you're just skiing somewhere amazing and it is incredibly cold (like Falls Creek in June). For these instances I recommend considering a boot heater, or a neoprene boot cover. Neoprene boot covers are mostly beneficial when your boot is below the snow (when you’re skiing in powder, in Falls Creek during June!). Heated socks are improving and worth a look at now also.

Make sure your boots are dried out overnight and at room temperature when you put them on. Putting your foot into a cold boot in the morning is just asking for a painful day. Beware of boot dryers - they may be too

But the true secret to any cold feet issues is to not let them get cold in the first place. So warm socks and shoes around the house before you go skiing is a must. QUICK RUN DOWN

~ BOOK ONLINE VIA OUR WEBSITE ~

• Do your boots up right. • Have a good ski orthotic/footbed made for your foot and ensure a wellfitting boot. • Wear a thin, woollen or synthetic blend ski sock. • Make sure your boots are dry and warm before you put them on. • Done everything else right but still feeling the cold? Consider a boot heater or neoprene cover. • If you have serious blood circulation issues, discuss this with your health professional before skiing. •

BUILDING HAPPIER COMMUNITIES With the Resilience Project

Their programs also have a strong focus on Connection, Purpose, Kindness, Emotional Literacy and Physical Health.

he Resilience Project is at the forefront of resilience research and practice in Australia - and Alpine Shire community members are invited to free sessions with facilitator Martin Heppell this month.

The Resilience Project co-founder, presenter and author Hugh van Cuylenburg released The Resilience Project - Finding Happiness Through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness in 2019.

T

The Resilience Project’s mission is to teach positive mental health strategies to help people increase happiness in their lives. Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said the past few years have been difficult for our communities, and resilience is more important than ever. “We’ve all been through a lot recently,” she said. “We are generally a positive, supportive community. Learning how to be personally resilient is an essential part of tackling whatever life throws at us and supporting others.”

Its follow up, ‘The Resilience Project - Let Go’ was published late last year. Cr Nicholas encouraged community members to make the most of the opportunity to learn new skills to turn important principles into daily habits.

These sessions are free, registrations are essential. Book here: www.eventbrite.com. au/o/alpine-shire-council-communityservices-15968942559. More info can be obtained and you can learn more at: theresilienceproject.com.au/ This activity is supported by funding from Murray PHN through the Australian Governments PHN Program. • Co-founder, presenter and author Hugh van Cuylenburg

“It can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and lose focus on what makes us happy, and the wonderful things in our lives to be grateful for,” she said. “Our mental health can suffer as a result. These free live presentations will entertain, inspire and educate, providing important takehome tips to increase resilience.”

“Tactics to foster and reinforce resilience are important to ongoing mental health and wellbeing and we’re delighted to bring The Resilience Project to the Alpine Shire to help us all explore how to lead happier lives.”

ALTITUDE AND ELEVATION Local Knowledge For All

S

omeone recently asked me what altitude Falls Creek sat at in comparison to other ski resorts. I didn’t have the answer to hand but had a vague idea of the statistics, so did some googling. As always, google gave me a warm welcome to the rabbit hole called research and then bid me goodbye for the next few hours of my life. We all know that information is not always accurate online, that some websites pick and choose their information to suit a need or a point of view. I have no idea what need, or viewpoint, was in contention regarding Falls Creek's elevation, but I came across five different statistics before getting irritated at the variations and beginning my research into the elevation of Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Thredbo and Perisher. Apparently, Mt Buller also suffers from the same affliction as Falls Creek regarding varied data and it was making me a little

cross as I was looking for a quick and easy answer rather than finding myself distracted from work for several hours on end due to a suitable answer not being readily accessible. So, when in doubt, go to the source. That is what my thesis supervisor always used to tell me. Therefore, I picked up the phone and spoke with the always helpful and wonderfully friendly Katie at Resort Management. The conversation went something like this… NF: Katie, what is the village elevation of Falls Creek? Katie: Well Nyree, it depends where in the village you are… Slalom Plaza is at 1550 metres above sea level, but the village bowl is higher again. When you first enter Falls it is lower than the Plaza. NF: Yeah, but I think the village starts at the Gully car park… because that’s where the first buildings are (plus it’s where Race Club is!). What do you think?

MBRM: It depends where in the village you are…There is a sign just outside my office that says the Buller Village is at 1595 metres above sea level, but I’m not going outside to look at it as it’s bucketing down with rain right now. Generally, it is accepted that the village is at 1600m. NF: Perfectly acceptable response. I wouldn’t be going outside in the rain if I were you either…but is that really the start of the village or is it where the first car park and buildings are at Horse Hill Car Park. What about this website that say’s the base elevation is 1,375 metres? What do you think? MBRM: Who are you and why do you need to know this? NF: I’m just interested, and I hate inconsistent data… but I might turn this into an article for Ken who publishes This Week in Falls Creek & Mt Beauty in winter.

Katie: how about I get you the elevations for the Gully, the Bowl and the Plaza and then you can decide? Only after ending the conversation with Katie did I think about Howman’s Gap. Is Howman’s Gap really the start of the Falls Creek Village? What about all the buildings down there? ‘Can Of Worms!’ My conversation with the very helpful lady at Mt Buller Resort Management followed similarly…

Creative looks in all aspects of Hairdressing ~ Barbering ~ Professional Makeups with Eco Friendly Sustainable Products.

NF: Hello! Can you help me? What is the village elevation of Mt Buller?

MBRM: Fair enough. It is accepted that the village is at 1600m. Need help with anything else? So, after all that, what are the village and highest point elevations of our five biggest alpine resorts? Thredbo takes out the prize for both the highest elevation of 2037, and the lowest village at 1365 metres above sea level.

ALTITUDE AND ELEVATION Interestingly, I found out from all my googling that the Alpine village of Zermatt in Switzerland is almost at the same elevation as Falls Creek at 1600m… it’s just a hell of a lot colder there in winter. • Have a great week and see you up on the slopes! Cheers, Nyree Fiddes. ‘I Dream of Snow’ www.idreamofsnow.com Note: As a basic Rule of Thumb, the high water mark of Rocky Valley Dam is 1600m above sea level. The aqueducts (Racelines) that feed the lake fall 1 in 300 (1 metre in 300 metres) towards the lake. Therefore the 5km aqueduct above the village would rise about 16metres from the lake to its start point at Wishing Well. The same applies to the Roper’s Lookout aqueduct and to Langford’s East and Langford’s West aqueducts. The high water mark of Pretty Valley Pondage is pretty close to 1640m asl (allowing water from there to run into Rocky Valley when not being used for hydro generation. The Cope Saddle aqueducts are just about 1670m asl. Need to know more about this beautiful area, come and see us in summer. Ed.

ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODE Respect Gets Respect

R

egardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities that common sense, protective equipment and personal awareness can reduce. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment. Observe the Code and Share with others the Responsibility for a great experience 1. Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air. 2. Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress. 3. Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury. 4. Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. 5. Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs. 6. Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them.

7. Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above. Look uphill and give way to others when entering/exiting a trail or starting downhill. 8. Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/ boarding equipment, even when riding chairlifts. 9. Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol. 10. If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol. Know the code. It’s your responsibility. Failure to observe the code may result in cancellation of your ticket or pass by ski patrol or other authorised personnel. Respect gets respect - from the lift line, to the slopes, through the park and the resort. •

This is the Alpine Responsibility Code – very distinctive and not too hard to read. Run through it each time you have the chance – there may be a prize at the end of it! Pic – Courtesy ASAA

TWO SITES CONSIDERED For NE Water Off-Take

COVID-19 Restriction changes and weather may impact some of these events. Please check with the organiser for the most up-to-date information.

“The reference group has now decided that two sites be progressed for further consideration which include Embankment Drive near the outflow of the pondage and a site near the top of tail race pumping from the West Kiewa and the tail race.”

A

location for critical new water infrastructure in Mount Beauty has been narrowed down to two potential sites by a community and key stakeholder reference group.

JUN 18 & 25 Park Run. 8am at Bicentennial Park by the lake in Lakeside Avenue.

It is anticipated that the reference group and the technical sub-group will meet one more time to finalise their recommendations to the North East Water Board.

The group, made up of 13 community members and seven representatives from key agencies, have been meeting regularly since March to provide advice to North East Water about potential locations of a raw water offtake.

“The meetings have been extremely important in giving the community a voice in the location of this crucial piece of infrastructure.”

“During the last few months, everyone has had an opportunity to have a comprehensive tour of each of the nine proposed offtake locations.”
