FROM THE CEO which provides a framework of how and when to develop additional parking capacity, as the correlation between car parking and bed utilisation is obvious. The greater overnight occupancy of the resort, the fewer available day car parks are left. This year, the resort has seen a considerable increase in visitors staying for four days or more. In fact, 5, 6, 7 and 8 day resort entry pass sales are at record levels, so too resort entry season passes. The ‘hang time’, or the length of stay, therefore further compounds the turnover or churn rate per park, as long stays effectively remove hot car parks from the supply pool. For our business operators, the current high occupancy rates are very much welcomed, after two unprecedented years of little to no visitation. So, to be dealing with a parking problem is a great problem to have, in the context of helping the resort rebuild and recover. Currently several plans are being pursued to help alleviate this issue with the addition of up to 400 new parking spaces having been scoped at Bay 8.5 (Ropers Saddle) and as part of the ANARE shed redevelopment at the Lakeside. These spaces will provide

for overnight (Ropers) and day parking (Lakeside). Being able to accommodate 250-300 additional overnight spaces provides better utilisation of day parks in lower Windy and lower Slalom car parking locations. Resort management are continuing discussions with the department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on both these options as priorities. Information in relation to the ANARE Lakeside development can be found here: https://corporate.fallscreek.com.au/lakesidedevelopment-project-planning/

JUST SAY THANKS Pretty Simple

T

welve Days in Albury Base uncovers many little aspects of your life that have previously either been taken for granted or simply not considered - largely due to the fact that your health has been pretty good and there was no reason to delve into something unlikely. But there it is. You’re laid up in bed – and there is lots of time to think - and to observe. One important observation which did not take too long to arrive at was the fact that the staff in Albury Base Hospital were bloody brilliant. Watching them do extra shifts, filling roster spots and generally doing a very professional job under somewhat trying circumstances is a credit to each and every one of them. It was actually quite emotional to witness just how well they dealt with all manner of problems when, as an individual, you couldn’t handle it yourself.

But we definitely need more staff – and they deserve more remuneration. The only measure of a civilized society that cuts the mustard is how well the aged and the sick are looked after. Speaking of staffing levels, some-one posted recently something to the tune that “if unvaccinated people had been allowed to work, we wouldn’t have a staff shortage.” Sadly, the opposite is true. If these selfrighteous individuals had the grace and the intelligence to recognise their obligation to the rest of humanity and took their vaccinations, we would not have the staff shortage. Another observation, not so pleasant to discover, is that there are a lot of folk out there that do not look after their own health – yet they expect the medical profession ‘et al’ to look after them when they feel crook. If these people where just a bit healthier and exercised a bit more, we might even have a few more free beds in hospitals. An interesting fact that came to light during the stay was from the Key Obesity Statistics in 2022 “Simply put one in two Aussies is

overweight or obese!” Interesting figures that cannot be justified when our health system is struggling dramatically. It was also a little sad to see the number of patients (not a large percentage – but enough) who acted as though the staff were there at their personal beck and call, Not good enough- the staff were working their butts off and sure don’t need some ignorant so and so demanding all manner of stupid requests. As a result of this experience, I do have to thank many people. The driver of the community car was extremely helpful and the Community Car is a great service. Ph: 1300 704 530 or Em: info@ communityaccessability.org.au. Then there are the team that looked after the business, and those many wonderful friends who have contributed to my wellbeing in many different and special ways. Thank you all so much. And the good news, the paper is still running and I’m still here to put it together for a while to come yet! • Ed.

COMFORTABLE SKIING Flexen Groovin’

F

lex may be the be-all and end-all of a ski boot identity, but it’s a pretty fluid concept. Check out the flex rating on your boot compared to your friends. They might have the same number but move completely differently. Boots used to be super stiff. When we used to use 220cm long skis, the ski tip was more than a metre away. Getting your pressure to it was a tough gig. Ski technique at the time involved a whole lot more twisting than flexing. You were likely to break your leg before you bent the boot. With shorter shaped skis and the associated change in technique, boots became a bit softer, though they were still being driven by race-boot design. As skis evolved into something resembling the sticks we now see on shelves, boots got softer again. These days they ride a fine line between allowing you to absorb surface changes while staying centred on the shorter skis and being able to drive your weight into the tip of the ski. In an effort to make boots more comfortable, such as the sad case of the Rossignol ‘Soft’ experiment, boots got way softer and basically just sucked. Now we’re back to boots that should offer you somewhere between 70mm to 100mm of forward knee movement once the boot is engaged. Most skiers sit happily somewhere on the bell curve. We weigh between 50 and 100kg and most of the time we ski between 30 and 60 km/hr. Except for professionals (racers, instructors, ski patrollers) and

seasoned ski bums of your flavour of choice, we all benefit from a relatively stiff ski boot. If it’s your first week ever on skis, you need a softer boot that will allow you to experience the correct ski position while skiing sedately on a beginner slope. Once you’re in control – back on the bell curve with the rest of us. The boot can’t tell how technically gifted you are as a skier, but it does know how much you weigh and Getting the correct message to your skis… Pretty important! how fast you’re going. It doesn’t Pic – Courtesy Ortho Ski know that you ski like an out of control Muppet (Kermit the frog is my Getting the flex of the boot right for you is spiritual ski guide - he’s wavy, is loud, and essential in achieving this. I’ve got pass on the correct message to your ski. • a husband who skis like Animal – yells a Krista Sturday lot, hits anything in sight and wears a crazy Podiatrist and Bootfitter at Ortho Ski look on his face – we don’t weigh the same and yet the flex of our boots are rated the same (different brands measure differently). Getting your technique right is a combination of getting you in the correct position on the ski and getting the right message to your skis. The first step towards either of these goals is infinitely improved by having a correctly set up pair of boots. WORKPLACE DIVERSITY Love Letter to Ski School

W

orkplace diversity is something that organisations and corporate Boards aim for. We’ve all heard that diversity is good when it comes to the make-up of our workforce. The Harvard Business Review maintains that companies need to invest as much in their employees as their customers. “The case for establishing a truly diverse workforce, at all organisational levels, grows more compelling each year. The financial impact, as proven by multiple studies, makes this a no-brainer.” Its 2019 report concluded, “A great employee experience leads to a great customer experience.” “But why does diversity matter?” is a common question I get asked when banging on about recruitment bias in my

other job as an HR Consultant. Because that’s what the statistics show when it’s not just lip service. A 2018 survey of 1,700 companies across eight countries found that organisations with diverse management experienced revenue increases of 19%. It was backed up by a significant BuiltIn report in 2020 that concluded diverse companies: • Have 2.3 times as much cash flow. • Are 15 per cent more likely to exceed median industry profits. • Are preferred by three out of four workers (CEO Magazine, 2002). “Studies have shown that having diverse thinking approaches, and demographic differences, leads to increased innovation [because] you’ve got people coming from different thinking approaches who are prepared to challenge the status quo and question established processes (Sydney Morning Herald, 2002).”

I’ve spent the past two winters working as a ski instructor at Falls Creek. I can say, hand on my heart, that our Snowsports School is the MOST diverse workplace I have ever worked, and that’s quite a long list of employers before I started running my own businesses. The people who work as instructors at Falls Creek are the most diverse group of people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Diversity of snowsport discipline, qualification, experience, nationality, age, gender, culture, language, religion, sexual orientation, relationship status and skin colour. We all know that snowsports are dominated by white people, but it is slowly changing. The people who work as instructors at Falls Creek are the kindest, most generous, and most supportive people I’ve ever worked with (and again, that list is long). If you were allowed into the instructor’s locker room on any given day, you’d find an experienced instructor being asked for and offering suggestions on technical exercises to improve a stance/rotary/edging/pressure control problems. You’d find loads of people asking another person how their morning lessons went. Visit the

WORKPLACE DIVERSITY You’d at times find someone offering comfort and support after a tricky afternoon lesson with a challenging guest. You’ll find people asking questions about the certification level they are training for and getting great answers from those who’ve achieved those certs. You’ll find people offering to go out for a ski or a board with those who need to practise a technique for their next exam. You’ll find someone offering a mid-layer to someone else who’s left theirs at home. You’ll find people arranging to get together after work. You’ll find people sharing accommodation. You find people car-pooling. You’ll find joy, sadness, energy, tiredness, excitement, frustration, professionalism, strength, tenacity, grace under pressure and support. You’d find banter, lots of banter, about everything under the sun that always finds its way back to the topics of skiing and boarding eventually. What my HR brain is reminded of when thinking about the Falls Creek Snowsports School, is that because of traditional hiring practises that for decades has embraced hiring foreign workers, and because that practise has evolved to meet twenty-first century requirements, Falls Creek Ski Lifts has a department with such diversity it would be the envy of any organisation in any industry anywhere in the world.

And I love being part of it. Going to work as an instructor feels like being at Ski Camp. I get to go to work with the most talented, generous, collaborative, fun, kind, multigenerational and diverse people. For all the juggling I do to be on the hill in winter, working with these amazing people makes it all worthwhile. In a way, this is my little love letter to my snowsports colleagues. •

There are many elements to the job in Snowsports School - ultimately they are all rewarding. Pic – Chris Hocking

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2022 Edition EIGHT

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Koki

This central location also provides an easy stroll to many of the resort’s fantastic dining spots in Parallel Street, Schuss Street, Arlberg Street and Slalom Street.

K

oki is nestled in the heart of Falls Creek village and framed by the natural wonders of the Alpine National Park. Koki is a sanctuary and a playground for all seasons.

In Green Season, which we describe as everything outside of the official snow season, Koki also has so much to offer. Parking in summer is not a problem (but some restrictions do apply at Xmas and Easter) and the location is such that walking tracks and mountain bike tracks are easily accessed from the front door. Being surrounded by Alpine National Park means that there is absolutely no excuse for not being out there and enjoying all there is to offer.

Comprising nine exceptionally wellappointed residences crafted by Kerry Phelan Design Office, Koki represents a new design benchmark for the Falls Creek region. Made by ski families, for ski families Koki will be available for a few lucky purchasers providing a fully furnished turnkey alpine residence. We currently have a three bedroom, two bathroom apartment of 143sqm with delivery beginning Winter season 2023. Pricing on application.

Falls Creek has now developed a reputation for a host of summer activities and these include Ignition Mountain Bike Festival (November), the Alpine Challenge (November), Christmas Activities, the Alpine Classic (January), The Mile High Dragon Boat Challenge (January), Feastival Falls Creek (February) Peaks Challenge (March) and our fabulous Easter Festival.

This north facing residence provides the first of-its-kind in size, space, storage, and interior style, with a range of luxury amenities that allow alpine living to unfold with comfort and ease. The location of Koki is such that it provides the luxury of excellent ski-out and ski-in access under normal circumstances with easy access to Halley’s Comet Quad Chair LSC Bowl Ad.pdf and/or theai165941711822_Falls Gully Chair to theCreek Village and Eagle and Summit Chairs.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Launching the XCSAV

and I have asked him a few questions about the launch of this group.

ecently, a number of influential individuals in the cross-country skiing community have formed a new organisation, intending to be a peak body to represent the interests of XC skiers to authorities as such as Alpine Resorts Victoria, government, councils, Parks Vic, and others. The organisation reports that goal of this coalition is to ensure that the collective and diverse voices of crosscountry skiers in Victoria are heard. Nick Montgomery is the secretary of XCSAV, the new peak body that has gained 200 members since it was launched in late July,

EJ: What is the peak body?

R

NM: “The peak body is the Cross-Country Skiing Association Victoria (XCSAV), a volunteer organisation that will represent the interests of cross-country skiers across Victoria. We will hold a vote to become an incorporated association and elect a committee on 13th August. Our activities will include stakeholder consultation with Alpine Resorts Victoria, the new government authority that will oversee alpine resorts, media engagements, information for cross-country skiers and campaigns like the existing Save Falls Creek XC campaign which formed in response to the proposed road clearing as part of the Lakeside project.”

EJ: Why is it important? NM: “Falls Creek told some of us that when they were planning the Lakeside project, they didn’t know who to talk to if they wanted to ask XC skiers’ collective opinion. There are thousands of XC skiers, but we aren’t organised and there isn’t an established way to pass information from authorities to skiers and back. If we are united and organised, we can better tell the great story of XC skiing in Victoria – our skiing is world class, and the sport is great for people of all abilities.” EJ: What prompted you to be involved in this project? NM: “I’m a construction lawyer and have experience in other non-profit sporting bodies. I started downhill skiing in 1997 and was on the Australian XC team until 2017 – I have an ongoing love for the sport and Falls Creek. I wanted to help channel the energy from the angry response to the road clearing proposal to promote effective advocacy for XC skiing into the future. In particular, I felt that some within Resort Management didn’t think we were worthy of consultation before the road clearing was announced as something we couldn’t do anything about, even though we are nearly the only user group in that area over winter and Resort Management didn’t seem to have considered the impact on us. This really fired me up!”
