Editor’s Picks Apple Valley | Rosemount Apple Valley ranked among nation’s best small cities What makes Apple Valley a great place to live, work and play was recently spotlighted by Money magazine. Apple Valley earned the No. 20 spot on the 2010 list of America’s Best Places to Live, the magazine’s annual ranking of the nation’s most livable small cities. Located 15 minutes south of the Mall of America, the city is a significant regional destination for its variety of leisure and commercial offerings. With the Minnesota Zoo in their backyards, local residents know the treasure they have close to home. The year-round zoo hosts more than 2,700 creatures living in natural habitat exhibits, and recently underwent a major upgrade with the addition of the “Russia’s Grizzly Coast” exhibit.” The city is a shopping and restaurant magnet for the area, with a major concentration of shops

and eateries at the junction of County Road 42 and Highway 77/ Cedar Avenue. There one can find pretty much anything to buy from both independent retailers and big-box stores. The culinary delights range from fast food to some of the most elegant sit-down restaurants in the area. Home to 50 city parks, Apple Valley also offers access to Lebanon Hills Regional Park run by Dakota County, along with Johnny Cake Ridge Park operated jointly by the city and School District 196. People can hike, walk, bike, ski, canoe, camp, play ball and much more at these sites. In the summer, disc golf is a popular sport at Alimagnet Park, and there’s the newly upgraded Apple Valley Aquatic Center and golf courses to explore, while the city-owned Valleywood Golf course turns into a mecca for cross

The Apple Valley Freedom Days Parade includes a contest for children to win prizes for decorating their bikes. country skiers in the winter. Special events, such as MidWinter Fest and the Freedom Days summer festival, highlight the city’s many recreational offerings. More information about what

Apple Valley has to offer is available on the websites of Apple Valley city government (www. cityofapplevalley.org) and the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce (www.applevalleychamber.com).

Rosemount continues to enhance downtown, other areas The city of Rosemount touts its residents and businesses as having a spirit of pride in the past and present. Rosemount could be viewed as a coin with those two sides, but a more accurate description would be like the swirling together of two colors to create a vibrant tapestry. The advancements in the past few years can be seen in the city’s downtown and its main commercial district. Despite a weak economy, new businesses have sprouted up along County Road 42 in Rosemount Market Square Mall, the Cub Foods area development, Celtic Crossing and downtown. Among the more noticeable recent changes have fused the past and the present. The city of Rosemount has Page 16 Apple Valley / Rosemount

turned the former St. Joseph Church into the Steeple Center, which is now home to performance arts, special events and much more. The city also is in current talks to have a senior housing and senior center built on vacant property just to the north. Work also is underway to provide more athletic fields at the University of Minnesota land known as UMore Park that would be available for recreational use. The city of Rosemount boasts an estimated population of 22,000 but by 2030, is projected to grow to have more than 50,000 residents. Driving that projection is the development of UMore Park, an ambitious long-range plan to build housing on a 5,000-acre property,

located between Rosemount and Empire Township. Promoted as a model of a sustainable community, neighborhoods would incorporate business, transit, technology, and demonstrate renewable energy innovations. Established in 1875, Rosemount residents still cherish their city’s small-town feel as reflected in the wide range of local organizations, such as the Rosemount Area Arts Council and Rosemount Area Historical Society. The city’s biggest event is Rosemount Leprechaun Days, a 10-day family-friendly fesival filled with events, including a parade, and named in honor of the town’s Irish roots.

Golf Courses Dakota County There are plenty of golf courses in the south metro, where golfers of all experience and proficiency levels can play. Courses range from holes with beginner and casual golfer distances to championship flight designs. While this is not a comprehensive look at all area courses, it is a sampler that should provide a good starter kit. Those who are looking to get in a few swings and a little confidence booster can find it at courses such as the Apple Valley Golf Course, Birnamwood in Burnsville or Rich Valley Golf Course in Rosemount. These courses offer nine-hole rounds that provide a neighborhood golf experience. The holes are forgiving, sometimes, with their shorter distances or wide fairways. Because of this, the courses play host to a wide range of golfers from youngsters to seniors and everyone in between. Birnamwood is a nine-hole, par-27 public golf course that is owned and operated by the city of Burnsville. Apple Valley Golf Course, which is privately owned, is a ninehole executive-length golf course that can help those looking to play target golf. Golfers take a deep breath when they arrive at the tee box of No. 13 at Legends Club. The par-3 hole measures 209 yards from the back tees. tional nine-hole layout. The course has a few strategically placed trees, water and sand traps. It provides a step up in challenge while still offering the executive length. Another short course is Cleary Lake Golf Course, part of the 1,045-acre Cleary Lake Regional Park, southwest of Burnsville in Scott County. It has a par-3 length, 9-hole golf course and driving range. Among the public diamonds in the rough in the area are Southern Hills Golf Course in Farmington, Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley, Parkview Golf Club in Eagan and Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings. Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as offering both fun and challenge for golfers of all skill levels.

A creek that bisects the course comes into play on many of the holes. The terrain undulates, with the back portion of the course mostly on a raised section that makes for some blind shots. Valleywood is a championship 18-hole course with ponds, doglegs and a healthy dose of woods. The course requires good management, as the long ball is only sometimes rewarding. Fairway positioning is at a premium at Valleywood. Parkview bills itself as the “First to Open, Last to Close for two reasons. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The fully-public 18-hole course also earns the title because it is one of the few golf courses in the metro that host “Glow Golf. The

night rounds are played with a special ball that glows in the dark. The course features gentle hills and a wide variety of trees, 18 bunkers, a lake and pond. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern border with Hastings. With 36 holes of championship golf, Emerald Greens has flat and undulating sections. It has signature holes scattered throughout the course, such as the pondprotected par-3 and a hole with a postage stamp-shaped green. Golfers looking for the full country club feel need look no further than the south-of-the-river area. Boulder Pointe Golf Club in Elko New Market opened to the public in August 2002, and touts itself as having greens and turf conditions that compete with the best in the metro area. Designed by golf course architect Kevin Norby, this 18-hole, par 72 layout with multiple tees offers a unique challenge to golfers of all skill levels. It has 185 acres of rolling terrain, wooded areas, natural wetlands, and water hazards on 14 different holes. Crystal Lake Golf Club in Lakeville features stately pines, pristine wetlands and is accentuated with seven ponds, which create challenging water hazards. This 18-hole, par-71 course has three sets of tees ranging from See Golf Courses, Page 23
