Economy affects event, but the staples of Fire Muster are intact Kidz Korner, Sunday concert are among additions this year by John Gessner THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS

Even the Burnsville Fire Muster, an annual tradition since 1980, can’t escape the effects of a weak economy. The absence of Fridaynight fireworks is the most visible sign of a downturn in business sponsorships for the event, to be held Sept. 8 through 12. “It’s a challenging year for sponsorships, to say the least, said Tom Taylor, who co-chairs the Fire Muster executive board with Jim Marchessault. But Fire Muster’s staple events – including Saturday’s Fire Truck Parade, firefighting displays, carnival rides, kids’ events, live music and Sunday’s Community Parade – are all back, along with new features designed to make Fire

Muster more family-friendly. New this year is the Fire Muster dalmatian – a stuffed dog available for $15 at several Burnsville locations, including Walser Mazda Cafe, Walser Nissan, Walser Subaru, Walser Honda, both Cub Foods stores, Jo Jo’s Rise and Wine, The Buzz Coffee & Cafe, City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce. A contest to name the mascot is being held through the Fire Muster website (www.burnsvillefiremuster.com). The winner, to be announced on Friday, Sept. 10, will receive $100 in carnival tickets and a spot in Sunday’s Community Parade, riding alongside an oversized version of the mascot. “We have received scores

of entries, and a lot of them are very interesting, said Taylor, president of Shippers Resource Center in Burnsville. “We’re asking people not just to name it, but explain why you named it. There were some very interesting stories, some that really tug at our heart, others that are whimsical. A “Kidz Korner sponsored by Sun Newspapers is being added this year. It’s located just inside the main gate in Civic Center Park, where most Fire Muster events are held. Events such as Saturday’s pony rides and baby crawl will be held there. “We’ve done some of these things before, but we’re bringing it all into one area, which makes it a lot more oriented toward little kids, Taylor said.

A Sunday concert is being added at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center in the Heart of the City. The 3 p.m. free concert will feature the Dakota Valley Symphony’s Summer Pops Orchestra and Chorale, with special guest Billy McLaughlin. The five-time Minnesota Music Award winner will perform selections from “Into the Light, his new CD for acoustic guitar and orchestra. Free tickets must be obtained in advance and are available at the same locations where the Fire Muster dalmatian is sold. Taylor expects a capacity crowd in the 1,000-seat main theater at the Performing Arts Center. A battle of the bands sponsored by the GARAGE, Burnsville’s teen

center, and Pawn America is also new this year. Bands battled on Aug. 20 and 21. The winning band will open for the main-stage headline bands on Friday and Saturday nights at Civic Center Park. Casablanca Orchestra headlines Friday night, with High Noon on Saturday night. The main stage will feature runners-up from the battle of the bands on Sunday afternoon, Marchessault said. The 1 p.m. Community Parade on Sunday will include standouts from Burnsville High School. The state-champion softball team, state runner-up baseball team and state-champion drumline will be in the parade, along with BHS student Connor Wood, the Minnesota Council of Ex-

ceptional Children’s Special Student of the Year. “The Community Parade will be bigger than ever, Taylor said, adding that the Fire Muster is working to bring more community groups into the event. “Every year we’ve been increasing it a little bit, and next year we’ll have more of it, hopefully, he said. Saturday’s fireworks will begin bursting at 9:45 p.m. This isn’t the first time Fire Muster has had only one fireworks show – that had been the norm until several years ago, Taylor said. “Given the economy and sponsorships this year, we’ve had to make some hard decisions, he said. John Gessner is at burnsville. thisweek@ecm-inc.com.

Fire Muster celebrates firefighting and community

The Burnsville Fire Muster, a post-Labor Day tradition in Burnsville since 1980, returns Sept. 8 to 12. It’s a full community festival with roots in the traditional fire musters popular in New England. The Burnsville Fire Muster mixes carnival rides, music, food, fireworks and other attractions with an impressive display of firefighting equipment, from horse-drawn hand pumpers circa 1900 to the latest and sleekest fire trucks. The Fire Muster evolved from a neighborhood activity in the late 1970s. Burnsville resident and fire-equipment collector Roger Jackson and some of his friends would entertain children each summer with a display at what was then known as Diamondhead Mall. The one-day event was capped with a short equipment parade down Nicollet Avenue. When civic leaders considered an annual citywide festival, Jackson suggested an event fashioned after New England-style fire musters. The Burnsville Fire Muster and Community Celebration was born, along with a nonprofit corporation of volunteer organizers. Business donations, button sales and

income from concessions have been vital to keeping the event going since 1980. Evening block parties on Friday and Saturday have become Fire Muster traditions, along with fireworks displays. The Fire Truck Parade, which typically features more than 100 units of firefighting equipment from throughout the Midwest, is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The 2004 Fire Truck Parade, with more than 120 trucks, earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest fire truck parade. The Burnsville Fire Department is in charge of the Fire Truck Parade and the annual firefighting demonstrations Saturday afternoon on the Fire Muster grounds in Civic Center Park. The Community Parade, with more traditional parade fare, will be held Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. Most Fire Muster events are held Friday through Sunday in Civic Center Park. The Heart of the City and other locations throughout Burnsville also host events. A full schedule of events appears on page 4B of this newspaper.
