Block party, 9/11 observance are Fire Muster highlights by John Gessner THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS

This year’s Burnsville Fire Muster will open on a celebratory note and end on a solemn one. Kicking off the 32nd annual event will be an evening block party Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Best Western Premier Nicollet Inn. The Fire Muster will end on Sunday, Sept. 11 — the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. — with 9/11 memorial tributes. And expect the many events that are traditions of Burnsville’s annual community celebration — including the junior golf tournament, Saturday’s Fire Truck Parade, Sunday’s Community Parade, carnival rides on Friday and Saturday, live music, fireworks, and firefighter and police demonstrations.

Most events are at Civic Center Park, Nicollet Avenue and 130th Street. “We really work hard to keep this fresh, to bring in new items every year,” said Tom Taylor, who cochairs the Fire Muster board of directors with Jim Marchessault. “We know that is really one of the keys to a good festival.” Organizers are promising a “huge” block party from 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at the newly refurbished Best Western Premier Nicollet Inn, formerly the Holiday Inn Burnsville, located at 14201 Nicollet Ave. S. The kickoff event replaces the wine-tasting that had been held in recent years at

Chateau Lamothe, a wine bar and banquet center that has left Burnsville. Taylor said he expects the block party to become “a really fantastic tradition.” The block-party atmosphere will continue over the weekend, with two bands new to the Fire Muster taking the main stage. Brat Pack Radio will deliver pop hits on Friday, and Hitchville will go country on Saturday. Both shows are from 7 to 11 p.m. The beer tent will be open. Saturday night will feature fireworks at 9:45 p.m. Photo by Rick Orndorf Helicopter rides will be a new attraction, available Fire Muster organizers are urging the fire departments and fire truck collectors riding in on Wednesday, Friday, Sat- the Fire Truck Parade on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to bring their own displays commemorating Sept. 11, 2001. Fire Muster organizers are urging the fire departments and fire truck collectors riding in the Fire Truck Parade on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to bring their own displays commemorating Sept. 11, 2001. “We think it’s very appropriate because of all the firefighters that gave their lives, Taylor said. Sunday’s Community Parade, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., will be led by a series of six memorial banners, each bearing a vital statistic such as total lives lost and the number of firefighters who lost their lives, Taylor said. “Boy Scouts are go-

Crichton remembered Charlie Crichton, the veteran Burnsville City Council member who died in March at age 83, will also be remembered Sunday. In his honor, there will be a passenger-less convertible in the Community Parade, Taylor said. And a Charlie Crichton Award will go to the best parade entry. John Gessner is at burnsville. thisweek@ecm-inc.com.

ing to be carrying them, he said. “And the Dakota County Mounted Patrol is also going to be participating. We’re hopeful that we’ll have some military presence there, as well. A memorial tribute will follow at 3 p.m. on the main stage, led by the Rev. John Campbell of the Burnsville Chaplain Corps. The banners will be hung over the stage. “The goal is to make something similar to a reflection wall, Taylor said.

urday and Sunday, Taylor said. Saturday is always a big day at Fire Muster. Organizers are calling it Family and Community Saturday Afternoon. Activities include an expanded Kidz Korner, sponsored by Sun Current Newspapers. Lifetouch, the Fire Muster’s newest major sponsor, will operate a children’s photo booth in Kidz Korner, Taylor said. “The continued and increasing support of our business community has been really the key to the success of the Fire Muster, said Taylor, noting that Goodrich Sensors and Integrated Systems, which has operations in Burnsville, is sponsoring the carnival rides for a second year after signing on last year. “Bingo is back big time after an absence last year, Taylor said. “We’re very happy to have Thisweek (Newspapers) as our spon-

sor for it. Proceeds will benefit the Burnsville Hockey Club. Two local citizen initiatives — MyBurnsville and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon — will have booths on the grounds Saturday, Taylor said.

The Burnsville Fire Muster, a post-Labor Day tradition in Burnsville since 1980, returns Sept. 7 to 11. It’s a full community festival with roots in the traditional fire musters popular in New England. The Burnsville Fire Muster mixes carnival rides, music, food, fireworks and other attractions with an impressive display of firefighting equipment, from horsedrawn hand pumpers circa 1900 to the latest and sleekest fire trucks. The Fire Muster evolved from a neighborhood activity in the late 1970s.
