The Rosemount High School marching band was awarded the top prize in the eighth annual Youth In Music Championships at the Metrodome on Oct. 13. This year’s show, “Don’t Stop,” featured musical selections from Ravel’s “Bolero,” and pop-rock legends Michael Jackson, Queen, Journey and Fleetwood Mac. Rosemount finished in first place out of 10 finalists representing marching bands from five states. Eastview High School finished in fourth place at the event. More photos are at SunThisweek.com.

For those who are on the fence about donating a kidney to a loved one in need, Erin Harmon has a simple message: “It’s really not so bad.” Harmon, a fifth-grade teacher at Paideia Academy in Apple Valley, donated a kidney to her cousin earlier this month in a procedure at Hennepin County Medical Center. “If I can do it, anyone can do it – I’m a big wuss,” she said Erin Harmon with a laugh. “I had to get to the hospital at 5:30 a.m., and that was the worst part for me – I’m not a morning person.” Her cousin, Nathan, has suffered from congenital kidney issues and had one of his kidneys removed as a baby. As an adult he’s had to undergo dialysis several hours a day, three days a week. With the donation of her kidney, Harmon said the hope is improved quality of life for her cousin. “He’s spent so much time going to dialysis, and over the years his kidney issues have just gone downhill. He’s been trying to get a kidney

For 11 months, Bill Kuhn was a man on a mission. Starting in September of last year and ending this summer, Kuhn traveled the streets of his hometown looking to photograph every sign that bears the word “Rosemount.” Businesses, schools, water towers, highway signs, even railroad crossings – Kuhn shot them all. He’s now got a massive, 146-photo collage to show for his efforts. “I don’t want to say I got obsessed with it, but even to this day I’m still looking for things that say ‘Rosemount,’” he said. Kuhn said his sign project began as a series of family outings last summer – a lot of Sunday mornings driving around town with his wife and son. About halfway through, he started going solo. “It was a fun adventure, and I wanted to show my love for Rosemount,” he said. “If everyone took a little tour like I did, you’d see the beauty Rosemount has to offer.” See SIGN, 17A

Personal experience was the main way in which three Rosemount City Council candidates differentiated themselves during a forum last week at City Hall. Jeff Weisensel, Vanessa Demuth and Joe Zanmiller cast themselves as candidates in the mold of their professional and volunteer roles. The incumbent civil engineer, the Planning Commissioner geologist and the lifelong Rosemount resident technology expert put their views on display as they vie for two, four-year council seats. Joe Kurle, a self-employed residential draftsman, was unable to attend because of illness. Weisensel, who was elected

Walter Swift spent over 26 years in prison for a rape he did not commit because his courtappointed attorney did not challenge the science that wrongly convicted him. Steve Toney was sentenced to life in prison for rape and sodomy based on bad science, and served 13 years before he was exonerated in 1996 after DNA testing excluded him as the perpetrator. Toney had repeatedly asked his attorney to have DNA testing done before his case ever went to trial. “She refused,” said Lauri Traub, a First District public defender, whose questioning of witnesses with state trial team attorney Christine Funk in Dakota County courts revealed significant testing, training and procedure failures at the St. Paul drug crime lab. Traub cited the Swift and Toney cases at an Oct. 12 public defender training event, where See LAB, 18A

Apple Valley’s senior center to get new name by Andrew Miller SUN THISWEEK
Three years after its opening, the Hayes Community and Senior Center in Apple Valley is getting a new name. The City Council OK’d the name change for the city-run facility, which will be called the Apple Valley Senior Center, at its Oct. 11 meeting. Though the facility was built to serve as the home of the Apple Valley Seniors club, in April 2009 the council voted 3-2 in favor of the name Hayes Community and Senior Center, in hopes that the name would make the venue more attractive to people looking to rent the building’s 200-seat party room for weddings, bridal
showers and other social gatherings. Council Member Ruth Grendahl, who in 2009 cast the deciding vote to name the building “Hayes Community and Senior Center,” introduced the motion at last week’s council meeting to rename it the “Apple Valley Senior Center.” “I thought financially we were going to be able to generate revenues. … It was a fiduciary thing,” Grendahl said of her 2009 vote. “We all knew it was a senior center – that was never the question.” The opening this fall of the new clubhouse at the city-owned Valleywood Golf Course means the city has another attractive space to rent out for social gather-
ings, Grendahl said. To call the senior center the “Hayes Community and Senior Center” for marketing purposes, “frankly I don’t see that as an issue anymore,” she said. Council Member Tom Goodwin, who was opposed to naming the venue “Hayes Community and Senior Center” in 2009, said the original name was “a huge betrayal to the Apple Valley Seniors,” who were part of a coalition instrumental in getting a $14 million bond referendum passed in 2007 that funded the center and other parks projects. Goodwin said the name will officially be changed after Election Day in November, as “Hayes Community and Senior Center” is listed
as one of the city of Apple Valley’s polling places. As for the cost of changing the name, Goodwin said it will probably amount to “a couple hundred bucks.” In addition to replacing the signage on the building, promotional materials for the facility will need to be changed, City Administrator Tom Lawell said. The council voted 4-1 in favor of the name “Apple Valley Senior Center.” Council Member John Bergman opposed the measure, saying he was open to the name change but wanted additional discussion.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the intersection of 145th Street West and Diamond Path to celebrate the completion of an extension to the pedestrian and biking trail along the east side of Diamond Path. The trail creates a one-mile route from County Road 42 to Connemara Trail that has long been envisioned in Rosemount’s “Trail and Sidewalk Improvement Plan.” The latest project, costing $425,000, was brought to completion with the help of a joint powers agreement with Dakota County, which contributed 55 percent of the funding. Participants in the event included Assistant City Engineer Phil Olson, City Engineer Andrew Brotzler, Dakota County Traffic Engineer Kristi Sebastian, County Commissioner Will Branning, Mayor Bill Droste, City Administrator Dwight Johnson, Rosemount Director of Parks and Recreation Dan Schultz and other county staff.

Obermueller’s moderate politics a fit for 2nd District The political center isn’t a place Republican John Kline has had to worry much about in his five terms as U.S. representative in Minnesota’s 2nd District. That may prove true again once the ballots are counted on Nov. 6, but redistricting has given the 2nd a more purplish hue. Gone are Carver, Le Sueur and western Rice counties. Hello, South St. Paul and West St. Paul — older, first-ring suburbs that like to send Democrats to office and are used to having one, Betty McCollum, in Congress. Mike Obermueller, an Eagan attorney who served one term in the Minnesota House of Representatives, is the fifth Democrat to try to unseat Kline, a Lakeville resident and retired Marine colonel. Obermueller deserves to be elected. He’s young, bright and determined to win the expanded center in the new 2nd. His views and political instincts are a rebuke of the obstructionism that has discredited the Republican House majority. Raised on a dairy farm near Marshfield, Wis., Obermueller worked his way through college and law school before settling with his family in Eagan, where he is active in the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus, the Eagan Art Festival and the Eagan Athletic
ECM Editorial Association. He proudly proclaims that he was the first Democrat to win former Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s old Minnesota House seat since Eagan was still cornfields. A notable achievement, but it was in 2008, an especially hospitable year for Democrats. Likewise, Obermueller was unseated two years later in a nationwide sweep by Republicans. As a legislator, he voted against several DFL Party tax-raising initiatives and voted for a vetoed 2009 budget fix that would have imposed a $1 billion tax hike on the state’s highest income earners. It included a “blink-off ” provision for better fiscal times, he says. At the federal level, he supports keeping the middle-class breaks in the Bush tax cuts and says the economy can withstand an increase on upper-bracket earners. Obermueller’s critique of the historic Affordable Care Act — Obamacare, which he supports and Kline wants to repeal — is spot-on. “I don’t think we did enough on the cost-control side of things,” he told ECM Publishers news staffers in Dakota County.
“There wasn’t a real true discussion about how you change the payment model so that we keep the person healthy rather than just paying for service going down the line.” A central plank in Obermueller’s campaign is rooting out government waste, fraud and abuse. Citing a recent Government Accountability Office study, he says tens of billions of dollars can be saved through measures such as procurement reform and modernization of medical record-keeping. Waste, he says, undermines government credibility in taxpayers’ eyes. “When they feel that way, they don’t want to pay any taxes for things they do care about,” he says. Obermueller opposes the “premium support” plan for Medicare backed by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. Kline is rigidly conservative, with consistently high ratings from the American Conservative Union. Unlike many of the Tea Party members of his Republican caucus, he voted in 2011 to raise the federal debt ceiling. But he supports “Cut, Cap and Balance” — excessively harsh budget medicine that includes calling for a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution. He chairs the House Education and the
Workforce Committee and wants to slash federal involvement in local schools. Yet he opposed the No Child Left Behind waiver in Minnesota while the state’s educators cheered. Kline is a favorite of the for-profit college industry, which showers him with campaign donations, but the industry has been called out in Congress for unsavory student-loan practices. Kline also has a growing reputation in his district for not making himself available during election season. His office rebuffed efforts by the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce to recruit him for a candidate forum with Obermueller. And this is the second straight election cycle in which Kline’s press office refused requests from Sun Thisweek Newspapers to make the candidate available for an hour-long endorsement interview. The new 2nd District deserves a representative who’s less ideological and more respectful of its voters. Mike Obermueller is that candidate. The is a product of the ECM Editorial Board. We like downtowns, but we LOVE those big-box stores by Larry Werner ECM PUBLISHERS
When I moved to the Twin Cities with my wife and two children almost 30 years ago, we settled in the Morningside neighborhood of Edina, just blocks from the 50th & France shopping district that is the picture-perfect, walkable downtown. Along 50th Street and France Avenue, you can buy anything a shopper might want, even if she doesn’t really need it, and things she needs, such as groceries at Lund’s. Edina’s lovely downtown still has a movie theater, restaurants and shops accessible from sidewalks we liked to stroll for the fun of walking and people-watching. Much as my wife liked 50th & France, I can still remember how excited she was when the Edina Sun Current reported we’d be getting a Target just north of us in St. Louis Park. I’m sure the owners of those cute little stores at 50th and France weren’t as excited as my wife that another big-box competitor was opening nearby. I find myself reminiscing about pedestrian-friendly downtowns and the popularity of big boxes as I read in our newspapers about the expansion underway by the biggest of boxes: Walmart. In newspapers ranging from ECM Publishers’ UnionEagle in Princeton, up north, to the southern-metro communities served by our Sun Thisweek in Dakota County, we’re reading about new Walmart stores going up. Within a few miles of the new Walmarts in Princeton, Burnsville and Lakeville are downtowns whose continued existence is threatened by competition from the nation’s biggest retailer. How do we keep our downtowns alive when consumers are enticed by the low
Sun Thisweek Columnist
Larry Werner
prices and infinite variety of merchandise at the big boxes? It takes hard work and investment by local heroes who believe downtowns are worth saving, and it takes a special quality that attracts people to our cities’ main streets. In Princeton, the old Ben Franklin, which closed a dozen years ago, sat empty while city officials were celebrating the decision of Walmart to build in the city. Likewise, Lakeville officials speak warmly about the historic downtown, which, like Princeton, has its share of vacant storefronts, while praising the employment, tax revenue and shopping opportunities that will be provided by the Walmart going up a few miles south. In Burnsville, where the City Council spent millions to create a downtown called Heart of the City, the signature building in that new downtown — Grande Market Square — has been foreclosed upon, according to a story by Sun Thisweek Burnsville Editor John Gessner. The same city officials who recruited developers to construct the Heart of the City district are now praising the construction of a new Burnsville Walmart, just a few miles north of the new Lakeville Walmart. The question is: Can we have our downtowns and our big boxes, too? How do Lakeville and Princeton, Elk River and
North Branch, develop the appeal in their downtowns of Edina or, say, Stillwater? Those last two cities might not be good examples. Edina’s fabled affluent population might give its downtown a financial advantage that cities with normal demographics can’t match. And historic Stillwater has the charm of being a river town to which tourists are drawn. There are elements besides big bucks and rivers that can keep downtowns alive, despite Walmarts. The city of Anoka is the seat of Anoka County, and that draws people to the courthouse and its nearby shops and restaurants. Likewise, Cambridge, the home of Isanti County government, draws folks to its downtown, where we publish our Isanti County News. So what do places like Princeton and Lakeville do without the high demographics, the riverfront or the county government center? Those downtowns have to be saved from Walmart by such local heroes as Carie Fuhrman, Mary Chapman and Jeff Hammer in Princeton, and Judy Tschumper and Mark Hotzler in downtown Lakeville. And by city councils that believe in downtowns. In anticipation of Walmart opening in Princeton next spring, Fuhrman, Princeton’s community development director, and Chapman, coordinator at the Chamber of Commerce, came up with a downtown-revitalization program that will provide almost $20,000 each to three businesses willing to set up in vacant downtown spaces. Jeff Hammer, owner of Crystal Cabinet Works in Princeton, has bought the former Ben Franklin building and will use that empty storefront as a showroom for his products. In Lakeville, Tschumper, executive director of the Downtown Lakeville Business
Association, works with downtown property owners to create events and excitement in the historic downtown. Hotzler, a real estate developer, has bought up most of the property on the city’s main street and redeveloped spaces for entrepreneurs. The city of Princeton has kicked in $30,000 for the Fuhrman-Chapman “It Starts Here” program. Years ago, the Lakeville City Council passed a special property tax that supports the activities of the business association there. City governments in other of our communities are getting on the downtown bandwagon. Last week, the city of Elk River unveiled a downtown-enhancement plan drawn up by a task force. There is something about a downtown that people won’t let die, even in the face of competition from monster retailers. “It’s the heart and the soul of our community,” Fuhrman said of Princeton’s downtown. Joni Astrup, associate editor of our Star News, quoted Stewart Wilson, chair of Elk River’s Housing and Redevelopment Authority, as saying some cities are trying to create downtowns they never had. That’s what Burnsville’s Heart of the City and Apple Valley’s Central Village attempt to be — new downtowns. “Elk River already has a downtown and has had it for over 150 years,” Wilson said. So by saving our downtowns, we’re preserving our history. What do you think? Are downtowns worth saving in this age of the box? Larry Werner is director of news for ECM Publishers. Letters Correction In an Oct. 12 story regarding the District 196 candidate forum, a quote attributed to Jeff Wilfahrt should have read: “I absolutely believe in labor — organized labor. At this point in time in our society, it is the last bastion of defense from the collapse of the middle class. So, yes, I support seniority in teaching.” Sun Thisweek regrets the error.
Wills supports small business To the editor: As a small business owner for the last 19 years, I have seen how the economy has forced the private sector to deliver the same or better results with fewer resources. There are some people who believe that government can be the answer to our economic problems. However, government can’t create
prosperity, it can only create an environment that will either foster growth or hinder it. Wasteful spending and overregulation only make it more difficult for each of us to create our own prosperity. In the private sector, the desire to make a profit forces business owners to constantly reevaluate their expenses and look for ways to be more efficient. No such motive exists in government. For that reason, it falls upon

us, the citizens, to demand that our representatives handle the tax revenues of the state with the same care that we ourselves manage our own business or household budgets. After all, it is our money they are spending. I believe that state House candidate Anna Wills will provide just that type of representation. Anna is endorsed by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Businesses. She is very supportive of efforts to cut government waste and eliminate redundant agencies and programs. Her top priority is to allow businesses to have the freedom to expand and add more jobs by reducing their tax and regulatory burdens. I am happy to support a candidate like Anna Wills who understands that more freedom leads to more prosperity for all of us. ADAM B. HARTUNG Rosemount

different financial situations. Preferably balanced as determined by whom? Next, tax credits and exemptions are “hidden spending.” Only if Frans considers all of our income as his first and he gets to decide what we get to keep. But the most convoluted statement was “the top 10 percent of Minnesota earners pays almost 17 percent less than the remaining 90 percent of wage earners in terms of percentage of income paid to taxes.” What? Talk about contriving a statistic to bolster an agenda. He does go on to explain that those incomes between $41,000 and $53,000 pay about 12.3 percent to state and local taxes and those incomes above $429,000 pay 9.7 percent. That’s $6,519 on $53,000 and $41,613 on $429,000. Does a Minnesota state resident with a $429,000 income benefit 638 percent more from state government than a resident with a $53,000 income? I suggest not. Why should they pay that much more? “Because they can” is not a valid answer. And finally, Frans is quoted as saying “There’s an enormous amount of stuff we don’t tax.” Well, I for one would seriously hope so! Want to balance the threelegged tax stool? Try a saw.
To the editor: T.W. Budig’s Oct. 12 Sun Thisweek story on Minnesota Revenue Commissioner Myron Frans contained many thought-provoking statements. Let’s start with “balance is preferable” among income, KEVIN property and sales taxes. SCHLEPPENBACH These are based on three very Apple Valley
Demuth doing what is right To the editor: To the voters of Rosemount, I would like to bring to your attention a matter of direct impact to you, that being the upcoming election of new City Council members for our fair community. It is our responsibility as voters to make educated choices to represent us. It is with that responsibility in mind that I bring to your attention Vanessa Demuth who is I believe the right choice for Rosemount City Council. As you may already know, Demuth is a long-standing resident of Rosemount and for years has been effectively representing all of us on the Rosemount Planning Commission. What you may not know is that she has also been looking out for all of our best interests in her professional career as a geologist for Dakota County. I have witnessed firsthand how Demuth fights for what is best for the citizens of Rosemount on issues like the contamination at the former Gopher Ordinance Works, creating a more protective mining ordinance for the UMore Mining Area, and taking measures to protect our drinking water. We have some serious growth issues that will require a leader like Demuth. Join me on Nov. 6 and cast your vote for Vanessa Demuth as our Rosemount City Council candidate that will do what is best for the citizens of Rosemount and our children. JOHN GAMLIN Rosemount
Another Catholic voting no To the editor: It is easy to picture a wedge that is being used to split wood. If the wood already has a small crack,
that is a good place to set the wedge and then to drive it into the wood to leverage it into two pieces. It takes more imagination to think of a wedge in politics, but political strategists have long known how to identify and to then use wedge issues. You identify smoldering fears and prejudices, and then fan them into open flames by suggesting some imagined threat. The voter photo ID amendment evokes the Latino population overrunning our country, and the marriage amendment evokes gays, etc., corrupting society’s institution of marriage. It does not matter that this signaling goes on without our awareness, just as a dog whistle works beyond the audible range of the human ear. That’s part of the strategy. Never mind that divorce and cohabitation had been undermining marriage long
before gay rights issues had surfaced. And never mind that voter impersonation is extremely rare. The wedge will still work; reality is incidental. The photo ID wedge would affect primarily the young, the old, and those on the margins of our economy, most of whom would vote for Democrats. On the other hand, the marriage wedge would motivate the self-proclaimed protectors of “family values” to come to the polls, most of whom would vote for Republicans. Getting your base to the polls while shutting out the opposition – now that’s ingenious strategizing. Too bad that it also sets up a divisive “me” vs. “them” dynamic that feeds the ruinous polarization of our country. Predictably many church leaders took the strategist’s sucker bait and fell into their trap. Here was a chance to enlist the govern-
Dakota Valley Recycling—the shared recycling department for the Cities of Apple Valley, Burnsville and Eagan—would like to thank local businesses, schools and organizations who participated in ARROW, Awards for the Reduction and Recycling of Waste, in 2012. More than 130 area businesses have been recognized by the ARROW program for deciding to
ment in the enforcement of church rules by embedding them into the constitution. However, our country works only as a pluralistic society where there is space for those who are “not like me.” That is at the core of our national Constitution. If we don’t accept that, our nation will split and tear itself apart. You choose. RAY LARSON Eagan
Don’t vote To the editor: Every week lately I see letters encouraging us to vote for one candidate or the other. But there is one option that nobody seems to talk about – the option to not vote. In many elections over half the electorate choose this option, which is a great sign for those of us who love liberty. I call on the rest of the population to
join these patriots and abstain from voting. No matter who wins, politicians will take away your liberty through laws and regulations. They will take away your property through taxes, inflation, and debt. They can kidnap your sons and daughters and call it “selective service.” Are these the kind of people you want to endorse with your vote? The politicians then swear an oath on the Bible that they will not violate the Constitution. Then they turn right around and violate their oath (think education, health care, foreign aid, etc.). Are these the kind of people you want to endorse with your vote? Democracy is not a sign of freedom. It is mob rule. If 51 percent of the population vote to enslave 49 percent of the population, would we all say what a triumph this vote was for
freedom? Get real. Yet tax freedom day, the day the money you earn stops going to the government and starts going to you, was April 22 for Minnesota in 2012 (try Googling it). So in effect these politicians enslave the people for the first four months of the year. Are these the kind of people you want to endorse with your vote? The worst thing that can happen to these politicians is for them to become irrelevant. Show them that you really don’t care about them. You can live your life without them. Serve your fellow man through the peaceful transactions of the free market, not at the point of a gun. Tell the government not to go away mad, tell them to just go away. HAL CRANMER Lakeville

These actions preserve our natural resources, bolster Minnesota’s economy, slow the filling of landfills, and help the environment.
Meet one of our ARROW participates...
Flowerama -- Dean Shaffer, the owner of Flowerama in Apple Valley, has some very passionate employees that believe in reduce, reuse and recycle no matter if it is at home or work. This passion is what convinced Dean that his business needed to be part of the ever-growing “green” trend. As a result, he implemented eco-friendly activities all around the shop. The employees now collect organics and cardboard for recycling on site, and collect bottles and cans that Dean and his wife bring home to recycle in their curbside recycling. They also purchase cloth towels rather than paper towels. This has shown amazing cost savings to the business, as they no longer have to purchase plasticwrapped paper towels. They now recycle or compost about 80-90% of their waste, leaving their trash dumpster less than half full on a weekly basis.
The shop has also recently installed a new water heater that heats water on demand. So instead of having a 30-40 gallon water heater running constantly, they now have a water heater that runs only when they need hot water, which is not very often. Overall, Dean has realized that the cost for “doing the right thing” is very little. In fact, he saves approximately $80/month and the shop now has 3 dumpsters that are each emptied once a week: cardboard, compost and trash. For more information contact Flowerama at 952-432-4229.

EdenPURE reopens Ohio factory creates 250 new jobs ®
New models shipped direct from warehouse at 49% savings Richard Karn, North Canton, Ohio
I was fortunate enough to attend the grand opening of the new EdenPURE® factory in North Canton, Ohio. The new plant brought hundreds of new jobs back to Ohio and reversed the common practice of sending Midwest manufacturing jobs to China. Now, EdenPURE® continues to ramp up production for the coming Winter with exciting new models and hundreds of new employees as this Made in America success story continues to grow. American Labor, American Quality With over 3 million portable heaters sold EdenPURE ® is the best selling portable infrared heating system in North America. However, like any classic, EdenPURE ® has dozens of would-be competitors who create Asian copies at low prices using cheap, foreign labor. Don’t be fooled by these imitations. Look for the EdenPURE® logo and the Made in North Canton, Ohio stamp. Save like millions of others on your heating bills and say “NO” to cheap foreign imitators. Save up to 49% on 2013 EdenPURE®s Now readers can save up to 49% ($229 the largest savings ever on new EdenPURE ® s). EdenPURE® is not just the best-selling portable heating system in North America. As an EdenPURE® owner I rank EdenPURE® #1 for quality, safety and efficiency. And now is the perfect time to save like never before on our expanded 2013 EdenPURE ® line made in our brand new North Canton, Ohio facility. With two models EdenPURE® can meet all of your heating requirements 365 days a year. Stay Comfortable 365 Days a Year “Never be cold again” is the EdenPURE® promise. EdenPURE® provides you insurance against the cold all year long. Stay comfortable on those unseasonably chilly evenings no matter the season. I live in California but believe me it gets cold at night. Keep your expensive furnace turned down until it’s absolutely necessary. And if we are fortunate enough to experience a mild winter as many of us did in the Midwest last year, you keep your furnace off all season

Heats floor to the same temperature as ceiling.
3. The soft heat “rides” the humidity in the room and provides even, moist, soft heat ceiling to floor and wall to wall without reducing oxygen and humidity.

PERSONAL
MODEL 750
As Al Borland on Home Improvement I was the man with all the answers. However, as Richard Karn I still look for money saving and efficient heating in my home. I have an EdenPURE® Infrared Portable Heater in my California home and like millions of others found it to be a super-safe, reliable source of portable heat all year long. and save even bigger. New, More Efficient Models The engineers at EdenPURE ® listened to their millions of customers and somehow managed to improve the #1 portable heater in North America. Through old fashioned American ingenuity the new EdenPURE® line is more efficient to save you even more money. The EdenPURE ® Personal Heater now heats a larger area, an increase from 350 square feet to 500 square feet. That’s a 30% increase in efficiency! And EdenPURE ® is proud to introduce the 2013 Model 750. The new Model 750 is perfect for larger areas and heats up to 750 square feet. But the best thing about the Model 750 is the price. We priced the Model 750 at only $50 above the Personal Heater. This means you receive a 33% increase in performance for only $50. That’s American engineering at its best! The EdenPURE® can cut your heating bills and pay for itself in a matter of weeks, and then start
putting a great deal of extra money in your pocket after that. Super Safe Infrared Heat Now remember, a major cause of residential fires in the United States is carelessness and faulty portable heaters. The choice of fire and safety professional, Captain Mike Hornby, the EdenPURE® has no exposed heating elements that can cause a fire. And a redundant home protection system that simply shuts the EdenPURE® down if it senses danger. That’s why grandparents and parents love the EdenPURE®. The outside of the EdenPURE® only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets. And your pet may be just like my dog who has reserved a favorite spot near the EdenPURE ® . You see the EdenPURE® uses infrared heat. And just as pets enjoy basking in a beam of sunlight they try to stay close to EdenPURE ® ’s “bone-warming” infrared heat. The Health Secret is in the Copper
technology uses copper heating chambers to take the energy provided by our special SYLVANIA infrared bulbs and distribute our famous soft heat evenly throughout the room. Now our copper isn’t ordinary. It’s 99.9% pure antimicrobial copper from an over 150 year old American owned company in Pennsylvania. So your EdenPURE ® heater is continuously pushing soft, healthy, infrared heat throughout your room. How to Order During our 2013 introduction you are eligible for a $202 DISCOUNT PLUS FREE SHIPPING AND HANDLING FOR A TOTAL SAVINGS OF $229 ON THE EDENPURE® MODEL 750 AND A $175 DISCOUNT PLUS FREE SHIPPING AND HANDLING FOR A TOTAL SAVINGS OF $192 ON THE EDENPURE® PERSONAL HEATER. Strip comes alive with new restaurants The Rack, Hurricane open on Aldrich Avenue by John Gessner SUN THISWEEK
Wings with attitude are back on a Burnsville frontage road known in recent years for its empty buildings and departed Hooters Restaurant. Two new bar-restaurants opened in recent weeks on Aldrich Avenue west of Interstate 35W and south of Burnsville Parkway. The chicken wing-slinging Hooters, whose November 2010 closing followed the shuttering of the same owners’ Hooters locations in St. Cloud and downtown Minneapolis, is now the site of Hurricane Grill and Wings. While the Florida-based chain serves up wings, beers and other fare with an oceanside vibe, the competitor two doors down is keeping the Hooters legacy in its rear-view mirror. The Rack Bar and Grill is designed to evoke a hunting or fishing lodge, except hunting and fishing lodges don’t usually come with a wait-staff crew called the Rack Girls. These servers dress for the indoors, in black shorts and camouflage tank tops. The business is in the old

spent 15 years opening and managing Hooters Restaurants, including stints at the Burnsville and Mall of America locations and even an assignment in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. “It was just time for me to do it myself,” Martinez said. “It’s a dream come true. I feel really blessed to have this staff. A lot of them worked for me before.” The decor of the old Timber Lodge lent itself to the Rack concept, which Martinez designed. Customers are greeted by a rack of caribou antlers at the entrance. “Without the Rack Girls, we wouldn’t be the Rack Bar and Grill,” Martinez said. “The Rack Girl is the essence and key to our concept.” Rack also refers to the tender ribs on the menu, which includes burgers and other bar fare. “Chicken wings — we’ve had rave reviews on our chicken wings,” said Martinez, who, with his partners, considered locating in the old Hooters building before settling on the Timber Lodge. “Just having this whole corner alive again is going to be bringing people that usually don’t come to this side of Burnsville back again,” Martinez said.
Hurricane The Burnsville location of Hurricane Grill and Wings is the first in Minnesota for the Florida-based chain, which has nearly 50 restaurants in seven states. The Burnsville restaurant is owned by Torgerson properties, which owns and operates restaurants and hotels in Minnesota and Naples, Fla. Hurricane touts its 32 flavors of jumbo wings on a menu of “island-inspired” flavors. “Our speciality is great wings, great burgers, great wraps — just fresh flavors,” Benesh said. Improvements to the building include fresh landscaping, an outdoor patio with fire pit, new lights in the parking lot, a fresh coat of paint on the outside and a refurbished interior. “If you saw an old surf shack along the beach somewhere, that’s just the vibe,” Benesh said. “You’re going from that dark ’80s decor to that light beach theme,” he said. “It’s 80 and sunny in Burnsville every day. That’s my new tag line.” John Gessner can be reached at john.gessner@ecm-inc.com or facebook.com/sunthisweek.

The sculptures on the tour – all permanent fixtures at the park, and all created by the Eagan art park’s founder Anthony Caponi – were selected based on some modicum of inherent creepiness. Among the offerings on the sculpture tour are “Pompeii, awash in what seem to be petrified skulls and skeletons, and “Snake, a massive coiled reptile. At each stop on the tour, children will get a piece of candy that relates to the sculpture. Last year’s tour saw Milky Way candy bars

In addition to the sculpture tours, children can make Halloween crafts and participate in a superhero-themed scavenger hunt. Guests are encouraged to wear costumes, and harvest-festival treats such as hot apple cider and popcorn will be available. There’s also a giant leaf pile. Young and old can jump right in. “We have 60 acres of oak trees that will likely be dropping their leaves very soon,â€? said Jenna Strank, Caponi’s communications coordinator. “I imagine the leaf pile will be at least 15 feet across and 3 feet deep.â€? Eastview’s staying power Boys soccer team gets another shot at state tourney by Mike Shaughnessy SUN THISWEEK
Eastview is not one and done as a boys soccer program. The Lightning finished second in the state tournament last year with a talent-rich lineup. Because a number of those players wouldn’t be returning, some might have assumed it would be a while before the team returned to state. Twelve months later, Eastview is going back. A 1-0 victory over Apple Valley in the Section 3AA championship game Tuesday night at Park High School in Cottage Grove sent the Lightning to state for the second year in a row – and the second time ever. Eastview will play a state quarterfinal game next week, with the date, opponent and location to be determined Saturday when a conference call is held to seed the teams. The Lightning takes a 12-2-5 record to state. “We don’t have the great individual talent we had last year,” Eastview coach Scott Gustafson said. “This is more of a bluecollar team. These kids work hard, know how to win and have a lot of character. We’ve also had different guys score key goals for us.” The Lightning’s spreadit-around approach to offense was evident in the section final when junior midfielder Jack Teske scored the game’s only goal with about six minutes remaining. It was his second goal of the year. Pierce Erickson played the ball toward the penalty area and Joe Schlosser raced toward it with three Apple Valley defenders in pursuit. When Schlosser slowed to control the ball, the defenders converged and blocked his shot. But it deflected to Teske, whose shot found the upper right corner. Teske “has a lot of talent, even though that was only his second goal this year,” Eastview senior Jacob Opheim said. “He’s a great teammate, and he’s the kind of player you like

Perseverance pays off for Lightning Eastview girls return to state tourney by Mike Shaughnessy SUN THISWEEK Photo by Rick Orndorf
Eastview’s Jack Teske and Joe Schlosser celebrate after Teske scored late in the second half of the Lightning’s 1-0 victory over Apple Valley in the Section 3AA boys soccer championship game. to see score a goal like that.” Neither team allowed many scoring chances in the first half. Early in the second half, Opheim took a shot from the top of the penalty area that just missed the post to the right of Apple Valley goalkeeper Ethan Meiburg. A few minutes later, Devon Veldhouse of Apple Valley missed the far post on a similar attempt. Eastview’s victory continued the Lightning’s recent run of success against Apple Valley. Eastview is 3-0-1 in the last four games between the teams. Apple Valley dominated the rivalry from 1997, when Eastview High opened, through 2010, when the Eagles won their ninth state championship. Apple Valley, in fact, never lost to Eastview in that span. The tide turned last season, when Eastview defeated Apple Valley twice, once in the regular season and once in the section playoffs. The teams tied 1-1 in a Sept. 13 South Suburban Conference game. Apple Valley started this season with a 14-game
unbeaten streak and spent time at No. 1 in the state rankings. The Eagles finished 14-2-3. Eastview returns to the state tournament under somewhat different circumstances. Last year the Lightning charged into the state tournament unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the state. The team lost to Eden Prairie in the Class AA championship game. Four players who could have returned to the Lightning this season instead enrolled at the Minnesota Thunder Academy, making them ineligible for high school soccer. Some viewed it as a talent drain that Eastview wouldn’t be able to overcome. Opheim said it got old after a while to keep hearing about who wasn’t back, but the Lightning didn’t use it as fuel to stoke their fire. “We just kind of ignored it,” he said. “We couldn’t do anything about it anyway. All we could do was play our game.” Eastview went undefeated (7-0-2) in the South Suburban Conference to win the league for the second year in a row – and possibly
establish itself as an elite program. “I hope so,” Gustafson said. “When I took the job, I thought we’d be able to compete consistently for conference and section championships. It took a few years, but I think we’re there now. But our section is so tough. When you look at ourselves, Apple Valley and Eagan, those are three of the better programs in the state.” Gustafson said there might be more parity than ever in boys high school soccer, noting that several perennial powers, including Eden Prairie, didn’t make it to the state tournament. That leaves the Lightning feeling good about its chances. “I think we can be back at the dome,” said Opheim, referring to the Metrodome, the site of the state semifinals and championship game. “And we’re hoping, if we play the way we know we can, to win the state championship.” Mike Shaughnessy is at mike.shaughnessy@ecm-inc. com or facebook.com/sunthisweek.
Three in a row for Rosemount runners Irish win boys title in SSC
the Irish aren’t assuming they have a state meet spot locked up. “We’ll ease up on our training before the section meet. We don’t take anything for granted,” he said. “And if you do things properly, you can hold peak form for a few weeks.”
by Mike Shaughnessy SUN THISWEEK
This is the third year of the South Suburban Conference, but its list of boys cross country championship teams would fill only one line on a sheet of paper. It begins and ends with Rosemount, which won its third SSC title in convincing fashion Friday at Eagan High School. The Irish were 41 points ahead of runner-up Burnsville and 42 ahead of third-place Eastview. Their performance was no surprise, especially not to coach Chris Harder, who said the Irish’s team and individual finishes were close to what he predicted. “I had us for 56 points and we scored 51,” he said. “Individually, there were a few differences here and there, but I had Trevor (Capra) in the top three and he did that. I had Sam Ivanecky in the top six and he did that as well.” Capra, a senior, finished third on the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 34.4 seconds, trailing only Burnsville’s Faysal Mahmoud (16:19.9) and Eastview’s Nick Oelke (16:26.6). Ivanecky’s sixth-place time of 16:58.6 is the second fastest by a Rosemount sophomore since Harder

Rosemount senior Trevor Capra finished third in the South Suburban Conference boys cross country meet and helped lead Rosemount to the team championship. became head coach in 1995. Sophomore Ryan Brumm (12th, 17:14.2), senior Tommy Linder (14th, 17:15.6) and sophomore Alex Berhe (16th, 17:15.9) completed the Irish’s top five. Juniors Ryan Condon and Luke Anderson finished 22nd and 24th. Because Rosemount proved to be the champion of the South Suburban Conference, the Irish likely will be favored at the Section 3AA meet Oct. 25 at Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley. About half of the teams in the section are
from the South Suburban. The meet also will include the top-ranked individual in Class AA, Richfield junior Obsa Ali. “We expect it to be competitive,” Harder said. “Burnsville, Eastview and Apple Valley all could be factors. Anything can happen in a section meet. We’ll be prepared as we can.” Teams that are heavily favored in their sections sometimes don’t give themselves extra rest before the section meet, choosing instead to try to peak for the state meet. Harder said
• Eastview seniors Oelke, Zach Tollefson and John Donlan were second, eighth and ninth, making the Lightning the only boys team with three individuals in the top 10. • Apple Valley was fifth in the boys team standings. The Eagles were led by senior Nick Hughes, who finished 10th individually. • Rosemount, Apple Valley and Eastview were fifth, seventh and eighth in the girls team standings. Rosemount sophomore Liz Evenocheck was 14th in 15:34.7 and junior Hannah Grim finished 17th in 15:37.7. Junior Vivian Hett led Burnsville with a fourth-place finish in 15:03.0. Apple Valley sophomore Camille Sjoquist finished sixth in 15:06.6. Eastview’s top runner was ninth-grader Margie Freed, who was ninth in 15:12.5. ceremony, Park goalkeeper Lisa Linn stopped Chasse’s shot and play continued. Chasse got another chance in the shootout and was one of three Eastview players to convert. Kayla Tuthill and Jazzy Chanthalakeo were the others. “I’d like to be able to say I scored the first time,” Chasse said. “But I’m glad I got a second chance. You’re not always going to get that.” Tuthill and Wilberding hit the crossbar with shots in the second half as No. 1-seeded Eastview struggled to put away Park, the No. 2 seed playing on its home field. “If you hit the crossbar, people think that’s a miss,” Chasse said. “The way we look at it, it means we’re doing what we’re supposed to do and we’re getting closer and closer” to scoring. Last year Eastview reached the state tournament and was seeded third, but lost to Centennial 1-0 in a shootout. That game also was played at Park High in Cottage Grove. The 2011 state disappointment was on the minds of several players as they returned to the Park field on Tuesday night. “It’s definitely motivation,” Huynh said. “I couldn’t stop thinking about that state tournament game for a long time after we lost.” “I will let my goalkeeper use that for motivation,” Herem said. “But I can tell you that we’ve never talked about last season. This year’s state tournament is not last year’s state tournament.” Eastview’s record and No. 5 state ranking would seem to merit being seeded in the state tournament, but Herem said he isn’t taking anything for granted. “I’ve gone to section seeding meetings where we’ve been voted fifth,” Herem said. “Now that we’re in the state tournament, we know we’re going to have to play somebody good. And that team’s going to be on an emotional high because they’re in the state tournament. So we have to be ready to play.”
Eastview’s girls proved you can fight Murphy’s Law. In the second half and during overtime of the Section 3AA soccer final, just about everything that could go wrong for the Lightning did go wrong. Shots rang off the crossbar. A potential game-winning penalty kick in overtime was stopped. Eastview’s first two attempts in the game-deciding penalty-kick shootout missed the net. But the Lightning kept working and converted on its final three penalty kicks. That was enough for a 3-1 advantage in the shootout and a 1-0 victory over Park of Cottage Grove on Tuesday night. Eastview qualified for the state tournament for the second consecutive year and will play in the Class AA quarterfinals next week. The date, opponent and location will be determined in a conference call Saturday. It was a hard-earned section championship for Eastview (14-3-1), which trailed Apple Valley 2-0 with eight minutes left in the second half of an Oct. 11 semifinal game before coming back to win 3-2 in overtime. “Our philosophy at Eastview is to never give up, never get discouraged, and keep playing hard until the game’s over,” said senior goalkeeper Anhthu Huynh, who made a key stop on Park’s first attempt in the shootout. “We do talk about that, but at some point you have to have results, too,” said Eastview coach David Herem. “A lot of people talk about working hard, but these girls are willing to do it.” For one Eastview player, the shootout represented a second chance. Senior forward Melisse Chasse, one of the Eastview captains, had a chance to end the game with the so-called “golden goal” when she lined up a penalty kick with 3 minutes, 56 seconds remaining in the second overtime. The kick was awarded when Paige Wilberding was taken down in the Park penalty area. Apple Valley hasn’t always made things easy on itself, but the record says the Eagles will be a winning football team for the first time since 2006. They improved to 5-2 following a 14-7 victory over Burnsville on Friday night, clinching their first winning record since Apple Valley went 8-2 six years ago. “Our older players were very successful as eighth- and ninth-graders,” Apple Valley coach Mike Fritze said. “They’ve gone through a lot of losses the last three years, but they’re tough kids.” The Eagles have goals beyond finishing 2012 with a winning record. Assigned to Class 5A in the Minnesota State High School League’s new football playoff format, they believe they have a legitimate chance to reach the state playoffs. The school’s last trip to state was 1993, when it won the large-school championship. Apple Valley’s toughest competition in Section 3-5A appears to be Farmington (6-1), which is ranked seventh in the enrollment class. Apple Valley is 10th in the state rankings. The Eagles close the regular season at Eagan (1-6) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The next day, they’ll find out if they received a first-round bye in the playoffs. Section 3 has six teams, and the top two seeds won’t have to play in the quarterfinal round Oct. 23. Farmington and Minneapolis Southwest (6-1) are the only other candidates for a first-round bye; the remaining three teams in the section are a combined 1-20. A first-round playoff bye would give Apple Valley a 10-day break between games (the section semifinal round is Oct. 27) and an opportunity to rest some key players, most notably running back/

FOOTBALL, from 15A Steven Wilson in the second quarter for Apple Valley’s first touchdown. Johnson scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter. Apple Valley still has a slim chance of tying for the South Suburban Conference championship but needs a victory over Eagan on Wednesday as well as losses by Lakeville North and Prior Lake. The Eagles are hoping for some help from Burnsville, which plays at Prior Lake on Wednesday before starting the Section 3-6A playoffs Oct. 26.
Rosemount 33, Jefferson 7 The Irish moved above .500 for the first time this season with their victory over winless Bloomington Jefferson on Friday. Sophomore running back Dimitri Williams scored twice for Rosemount (4-3 overall, 4-2 SSC). Two other scores came on passes from
Jackson Erdmann to Sean Kalinowski. Grant Jackson also ran for a 31-yard score. Three Rosemount running backs – Williams, Jackson and Trent Woodcock – gained at least 58 yards each. Kalinowski had two receptions for 40 yards, with both catches going for touchdowns. Erdmann completed six of 11 passes for 122 yards. The Irish played South Suburban co-leader Lakeville North on Wednesday, after this edition went to press. A victory likely would clinch home field in the first round of the Section 3-6A playoffs that begin Oct. 26. Even if they lose to North, the Irish might still get a first-round game at home.
Prior Lake 34, Eastview 17 There was no miraculous comeback this time for Eastview, which dropped to 4-3 overall, 4-2 in the South Suburban. The Lightning, which
overcame a 26-point deficit to beat Apple Valley on Oct. 5, allowed 450 yards against SSC co-leader Prior Lake. Eastview tied the game 7-7 in the first quarter on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Mark Dwyer to Amari Kennedy. But Prior Lake regained the lead in the second quarter and held it the rest of the way. Sophomore running back Will Rains gained 111 yards on 19 carries and scored one touchdown. Sam Fluegge kicked a 30-yard field goal. Eastview closed the regular season at winless Bloomington Kennedy on Wednesday. No more than four teams in Section 3-6A can finish the regular season with winning records. If Eastview beats Kennedy, it’s likely to get the third or fourth seed in the section and a firstround home game Oct. 26.

Kuhn, who works for Delta Airlines as an industrial engineer, said photography has been a lifelong passion. In recent years he’s honed his skills through photography classes with District 196 Community Education, and he volunteers as an event photographer with Make-a-Wish Minnesota. He estimates that he spent 25 hours shooting photos of Rosemount signs during those 11 months, and another 40 to 60 hours assembling the photos into a collage on his computer. He had intended to submit the collage in the “digitally altered photo category of the annual Rosemount Photo Contest sponsored by the Rosemount Area Arts Council,
but missed the contest’s deadline. As for the fate of Kuhn’s photo tribute to his hometown, he’s been mulling over some options. “I would love to see it

LAB, from 1A she encouraged defense attorneys to become educated about scientific data and processes used in court cases. The scientific inquiry Traub and Funk conducted resulted in testimony that led St. Paul Police Chief Tom Smith to shut the lab down and replace St. Paul Police Sgt. Shay Shackle as director. An outside firm has also been hired to conduct a review of lab practices. During the hearing, set to continue Tuesday, the state has effectively conceded that drug testing at the St. Paul crime lab was unreliable. The hearing’s focus is now on whether contamination at the lab was so widespread samples that went through the lab are unreliable for retesting. Dakota County prosecutors are in the unusual position of defending the lab that Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom has directed the county stop using after testimony revealed the lab’s lack of standard operating procedures, training, documentation and validation testing to ensure consistent and reliable testing. Dakota County Chief Deputy Attorney Phil Prokopowicz refused comment about his situation defending the lab’s practices at the hearing, but said one of the witnesses he plans to call to testify is Eric Gruenwald, an analyst for the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension where Dakota County now sends its drug evidence. Of the 98 pending drug cases retested by the BCA for Dakota, Washington and Ramsey counties so far, Prokopowicz said 97 test results were confirmed. One Ramsey County drug case was dismissed Sept. 27 after retesting found the evidence was not methamphetamine. Dakota County has also reduced or dropped charges in about five drug cases the BCA refused to test because only trace evidence re-

HARMON, from 1A
Erin Harmon was in high spirits following her surgery Oct. 4 at Hennepin County Medical Center.
for years and years and years, said the 34-year-old Eagan resident. “We’re hoping this will put him in a position where he’ll have time to learn how to drive and find employment. The surgery itself took just a few hours, she said, and in the days following the procedure she experienced some mild pain and fatigue. She was fortunate in that, because Paideia Academy is a year-round school, she was able to schedule the surgery and her recovery period for Paideia’s two-week fall break, and only had to miss a few days of work. “The procedure’s really safe, and the risks aren’t that bad, she said. “And so far, the kidney seems to be taking and Nathan’s doing really well. As for what she can and can’t do with only one kidney, doctors have advised Harmon against playing contact sports. “There goes my football career, she joked.
