Final year thesis

SKIN - SKIN. It can be argued that Modern architecture has expelled the buildings relationship to the ground. The rigid axes of horizontal and vertical planes associated with the style has produced rectilinear forms and allows the building to emerge as a dominant figure in the landscape. Raised on pilotis, Modern buildings constructed the platform as an artificial ground plane. Ultimately, the platform was a twodimensional plane, flattened to aid our transition across the built environment. This horizontal plane merely tolerated inhabitation. Unfortunately the language synonymous with this plane has been extended into contemporary architecture. I propose that the rigidity and stability expressed by the surface of the horizontal plane has failed to reflect the body, stimulate interaction, or challenge the inhabitant of architecture. To free the horizontal plane form its rigid axis my thesis aimed to break away from the conventional building typology inflicted by modern architecture. As the force of gravity restricts our inhabitation of the built environment to the horizontal plane we directly engage with this surface of architecture. It provokes the question, how can the design of a horizontal plane engage the body and challenge the inhabitant to intensify the experience of architecture? An exploration of the skin-to-skin relationship between the surface of the body and the surface of architecture directed the thesis toward a provocative design exploration and evoked an expressive horizontal plane. To challenge the restrictive conception of architectures horizontal plane the program of inhabitation for the design project explored the practice of yoga. Now conceived as a dynamic force, the body can be activated by architectures horizontal plane. This surface provided an expressive canvas with the capacity to embody the dynamic movements of yoga. The design of an expressive surface at architectures horizontal plane aids, activates, and challenges the participant’s body and amplifies the experience of yoga. An expressive horizontal plane, central to the inhabitation of a yoga centre, generates a dynamic space that provokes a dialogue of interaction between the inhabitant and the surface of architecture. A dynamic plane emerged.

A memorial to the WAHINE

DISASTER.

+ 2nd place - Commonwealth Association of Architects 8th Internation design competition.

On the 9th of April 1968 Cyclone Giselle wreaked havoc as it collided with an Antarctic front over Wellington, New Zealand. Nature exerted an unprecedented force as the extreme weather conditions pushed the Wahine onto Barrett’s Reef. The focused energy of nature created tension between the land and sea that inflicted agony upon the passengers who were forced to abandon ship and fight extreme weather conditions for their survival. 53 People lost their lives. The shock and agony continues after the sea ordeal as we remember the Wahine disaster. The Wahine disaster didn’t happen in my generation so it was interesting to research and offered a lot to work with. The site of the memorial space was chosen for its connection to the event, and reflects the extreme conditions of the disaster. The design offers a challenging floor plane that drops away from the fluid Corten structure to reveal a low opening that directs the inhabitants view down towards the rugged coastline and site of the disaster, where 51 people lost their lives. The buildings floor plane reflects the challenging shoreline that faced the survivors and victims of the Wahine disaster. The building looks outward to the site of the disaster, and at the same time, inward for contemplation. The building functions as a memorial space, and informs the visitor of the Wahine disaster as many future visitors will have little knowledge of or a direct connection to the disaster.

3rd year DESIGN

design

Completed June 2008

The brief for Arch 311 Design sought a sacred space. I pushed this breif and designed a space that challenged the position of religion in contemporary society. Using the Muslim culture as the starting point for this exploration; I emphasised the act of covering as a point of departure into design. Religion is interpreted relatively freely in contemporary society and this abstract space identifies this disparity. Amongst the multitude of transparent shards, differing degrees of layering cover the inhabitant. Depending on the individual desire, this abstract space can be inhabited uniquely. Individuals may choose to expose themselves completely at the exterior of the space while some may choose to cover themselves completely amongst the most dense areas.

design

SHALLARD HOUSE Designed by Guy Shallard at Lat Forty-Five: Contemporary living solutions, this project offers the clients the traditional style of living they desire with a contemporary edge. From a farming background the clients breif suggested the design reference the vernacular buidings associated with rural New Zealand, and more specificially the farm sheds and houses they have grown up with on the family farm. Positioned on a spectacular site with panoramic views that encompass both Coronet Peak and the Remarkables mountains the design exploits a unique view from each room in the house. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to be involved in the detailed documentation and consenting process of this project. I was responsible for the preparation, drafting, and lodging of both resource consent and building consent which have both been approved within the time required by the clients. This challenge exposed many unforseen requirements inherent to the documentation process that I had previously not encountered while at architecture school. This experience has highlighted the importance of practical design, anticipation and organisation. Producing a full set of working drawings has pushed me to develop positive relationships with a number of tradesmen and consultants in the construction industry. I have gained integral skills in communication as i consulted with manu professionals and trades people to achieve the desired level of detail and quality while compiling all the associated prices and specifications of each product.

4th yr CONSTRUCTION The breif for Arch 441 Construction defined a new facility for Moutere Hills Winery in Marlborough, New Zealand. This was a team project completed with Elspeth Simms and Jansen Aui. As a team we worked quickly to come up with a simple design that possessed significant challenges and allowed us to express our documentation and detailing skills. The design incorporated New Zealands contemporary and often experimental approach to the making of wine and emphasises the tension between the vines anchoring into the soil and the finished product breaking away from it inherent to the process of wine production. We employed construction techniques that were previously foreign to us in order to extend our knowledge of construction. We used cast in-situ concrete with steel infill to construct the interior floors and resulting spaces.

DETAIL # THREE SCALE 1:5

Project One for Arch 341 Construction provided a simple task in detailing. My previous construction experience was integral to the understanding of the material I choose to detail.

HORIZONTAL CLADDING OVER DRAINED AND VENTED CAVITY WALL / FLOOR JUNCTION.

My detail drawings expressed the cladding being used in two different orientations and identified the need for a flashing at the point they met. detail

Construction Process

Location: Kelvin Heights, Queenstown Designed: Guy Shallard Drawn: Thomas Ibbotson Constructed: Guy Shallard & Thomas Ibbotson Completed: Oct 2009 Area: 240 sqm

construction

My involvement in this project included design input, architectural drafting, and construction. Over a number of holidays from architecture school I was on site and participated in the set-out, construction of the footings, concrete floor slab, level 1, roof level, and finishing details. This project was extremely challenging and I have benefitted from the opportunity to construct from the plans I had previously drawn.

Completed Project

The complete project reflects the clients background in engineering. Two solid blocks brace a suspended bridge between. Not only is the large trussed bridge an exciting design feature, it provokes expansive views to the lake in-front. While the suspended bridge encloses the living area, it provides a sheltered and shaded outdoor area directly below perfectly suited to the areas dry hot summers. Materiality has been carefully considered throughout the project as the glass in the trussed living section promotes transparency and the concrete blocks that define the private areas promote solidity.

Construction Process

Location: Lake Hayes, Queenstown Designed: Guy Shallard Drawn: Guy Shallard Constructed: Guy Shallard & Thomas Ibbotson Completed: Feb 2009 Area: 110 sqm

construction

My involvement in this project started immediately after the floor slab had been poured and I remained on site until construction was complete. I was involved in all aspects of the construction including framing, roofing, cladding, connecting the building to services, and finishing. This project was an exciting challenge. The scale was ideal to grasp the many complexities of construction and the project incorporated a variety of challenges as concrete, masonary block, timber, steel and glass were all employed.

Completed Project

The complete project reflects the young clients desire for something different. This small two bedroom house is not limited to the clients needs, it is a provocative use of both site and budget. The dynamic form becomes expansive when inhabited as three external facades of the living area open completely to the deck and section extending the boundary between inside and out; perfect over the hot summer months. Huge box beams cantilever over the deck further extending the perimeter of the building to be filled with louvres to mediate the intense sun.

Completed Project

Location: Kelvin Heights, Queenstown Designed: Guy Shallard Drawn: Guy Shallard Constructed: Guy Shallard & Thomas Ibbotson Completed: July 2008 Area: 220 sqm

construction

My involvement in this project started on site immediately. After clearing the section, major excavation was required at the rear of the site to ensure solid footings were placed and the building was tied back into the rock. These complex series of footings were integral to the success of the building and accuracy was paramount. The floating volume of steel was positioned on the front columns and was later anchored back to the rock below through the series of footings we had previously constructed. My involvement finished at the completion of floor level.

Lat Forty-Five has never been shy of steep, rugged sites. The completed project expresses a dynamic form as the catilever appears to float above the passing traffic below. Suspended high in the air, the flat geometry exagerated by the visible underside of this box emphasises the jagged plane of the natural landscape falling away below it. In this sense the building acknowledges its imediate context and attempts to draw attention to the unique site as it express the raw aesthetic inherent to the regions landscape.
