01 THE SEASONS IN THE CITY Shading as billboard Columbia University, 2022 Fall, Cooperation Project Instructor: David Benjamin Site: New York(Time Square)

In addition to being highly relevant to ecological issues, building materials also influence public awareness and social culture. The publicity impact of glass curtain walls in highrise buildings in the 20th century drew public attention to technology and development, and the use of glass in high-rises proliferated as a result. We want to re-wrap the glass buildings with the short-life cycle, naturally degrading mycelium as the shading system, and the bamboo scaffoldings involved in the long-term maintenance and renovation process. Putting the propaganda of environmental protection in the most prominent position, and exploring new ways of living and new forms of cities for people.

Mycelium as a Living Material Mycelium is the root system of fungi, it's a living material. It plays the role of decomposer in nature, different strains can decompose different substrates, the main types of substrates are agricultural waste such as straw, rice bran and forestry waste such as wood chips. After the mycelium eats the substrate, the mycelium material has good heat insulation and fire resistance, and now it is used as heat insulation and sound absorbing wall panel. In the process of making mycelium model, we found that the growing of mycelium shows a quality of seasonal from growing to decaying similar with tree leaves. This quality is followed by its texture change which led to our focus on the aesthetic quality of the material.

Mycelium Sample

Seasonal Material In the process of making mycelium model, we found that the growing of mycelium shows a quality of seasonal from growing to decaying similar with tree leaves. This quality is followed by its texture change which led to our focus on the aesthetic quality of the material. We intend to make fully use of the aesthetic quality of biological material to create a new city image, aiming to be a representative of glass facade and scale up the construction process to reduce carbon emission of urban architecture. The model we are showing trys to represent the transparent and reflection quality of the current city image. The design of the representative was mainly focusing on the exposure of the seasonal. We are trying to expose and enlarge the seasonal quality of mycelium.

The condition of the environment determines how myceiulm grows in the substrate. When the oxygen and huminidy becomes rich, mycelium could grow farther. On the Surface where there isn't much water, mycelium would grow slower and even transform into mushroom later. But the bottom part of the object with enough oxygen and water becomes whiter and more solid than the top part. Compared between the brick and the slice of the material, the thinner of the material leads to a better quality.

40% of the world's carbon emissions are caused by buildings. Taking Manhattan as an example, the international-style high-rise buildings that emerged after World War II are typical of energy-intensive buildings that rely heavily on HVAC systems. In 2019, New York City enacted local law97 to limit carbon emissions from high-rise buildings, with a goal of reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 and fines for buildings that exceed the limit. Following this trend, we choose mycelium as the subject of this study, we experimented with these carbon-negative materials to see if its scaling up in buildings can mitigate or even reverse carbon emission figures. We calculated the carbon footprint per unit mycelium throughout the process according to the laboratory scale, the whole process is carbon negative, and the consumption of sterilization will be further reduced in industrial scale.

The history of glass production led to the fact that the aesthetic quality of a material determines public consciousness which in turns highly influences the scaling up process. And our project is designed to be the start point of a new era to expand the ecological ideology through a new paradigm of the city appearance. We chose Times Square as the starting point. In the context of Local Law 97, we can foresee a continuous renovation of high-rise buildings in Times Square. The renovation process will interrupt the normal operations of the building while generating significant carbon emissions and consuming labor, and after the highrise is wrapped for a few months, it will be business as usual. We want to make a semi-permanent system with two low carbon materials, bamboo as a permanent scaffolding to reshape the exterior of the building, and mycelium as a seasonal shade on the facade periodically, the new system will redefine the renovation process.

The Carbon on the Site

The Future Appearance

In order to avoid additional carbon emissions during the manufacturing process, the mycelium shade is manufactured using a combination of manual and mold. Four inches is the maximum size of mycelium that can be exposed to oxygen for normal growth, and this is the most basic module for the shade. The smallest mold unit is a 4 inch high, one inch wide strip of mycelium, which is stacked together and filled with mycelium after a week of incubation, bamboo is used to hold the layers in place. Each shade will occupy two spaces outside the curtain wall panels .and will be 8feet wide The initial height varies from 5feet to 8feet.

1. Stacking four layers of molds together. They will bond together naturally afterward.

2. Insert bamboo of diameter 1” at intervals of 8” and fill molds with the substrate.

3. The final installation will take place on scaffolding.

4. The change in the curve creates gaps that allow air to enter.

02 TOKYO 'MANTEL' Home of Hikikomori Tianjin University, 2021,Individual Project Instructor: Liwei Chen Site: Tokyo(Shibuya)

A unique phenomenon has appeared in Japan that people tend to spend their time in virtual world rather than communicate with other people. Hikikomori is an extreme example that they afraid of or dislike leaving their room and fulfill their need of comunication on the Internet. However, is this a irreversible process? or is their another way to help them establish contact with people? This project tend to combine the system of hotel and internet cafe and create a new system of communication that benefit both the tourists and hikikomori.

03 FLOATING ON THE CLOUD Hebei Cultural Center Tianjin University, 2020, Cooperation Project Instructor: Jianbo Zhao, Hongbin Bian Site: Tianjin North Train Station Tianjin northern railway station has been established for more than 100 years. However, it has gradually become abandoned with few trains coming by. Besides, the railway itself becomes a negetive element of the whole district. In this design, we are trying to create a lake by the railway which could become a scenery of the local people and tourists. The railway itself could also brings out opportunity of the whole area, connecting Tianjin and the nearby cities. The scenery connects the lake in the nearby park. making the whole area a greenland rather than two seperated places.

04 GABRIEL’S ENLIGHTENMENT Kano Education Center Tianjin University, 2021, Individual Project Instructor: Liwei Chen Site: Kano(Nigeria)

Terrorism has become a huge threat to the world. People believe that the rising of the organization could be explained by belief difference. However, the incident that the notorious islamic terrorist group Boko Haram attacked Kano mosque shows that the common belief is not absolutely right. According to research, those who joined the group were mostly uneducated people. And they don’t get the chance to see the outside world and know what the reality is. In order to change the situdation, I provide the kids in Kano with a center to know the importance of connecting with the outside world.

05 RISEN BY THE WIND Kwun Tong Office Tower Tianjin University, 2021, Cooperation Project Instructor: Hongwei Yang, Nadong Zhao Site: Kwun Tong(Hongkong) Guantang is an old industrial location in Hongkong with decades of history. However, it has become an unproductive area with old buildings and industries. people would like to change the situdation according to the survey. Young artists choose the place as it is cheaper than the prosperous part of the city. Besides, the old high-rise building blocked the wind flow and heating island effect is extremely severe in the area. Based on two of the situation. We tend to increase the wind flow and prevent sunshine using green technique, in order to create a comfortable environment and attract young people.

06 LIGHT TRACED Exploring By Making Columbia University, 2023 Spring, Individual Project Instructor: Ada Tolla, Giuseppe Lignano

This design is a further return and exploration for me. I use my past eyes to reexamine familiar materials in life, reshaping and translating them with existing knowledge. Mansory, steel, wood, and plastic all bear time and memory in different dimensions. Just as time and memory can shape a person, the past of each object has also shaped its present. In the process of exploration, I picked up these fragments of memory and used ropes as a medium to discover their characteristics, using them to construct my imagination. And I recorded observations and creations through my camera as my eye for narrative.

07 Devil Lake House Residential Client Private; Location Devil Lake, Ontario, Canada; Program Seasonal cottage;Area 390 m² / 4,200 ft²; Status In construction

Located on a narrow ridge sloping toward a protected lake in Ontario, the Devil Lake House is conceived as a series of seasonal cabins that disperse and connect to take advantage of the panoramic views of the lake to the south and the forest to the west. The final structure creates a modern expansion to an existing multi-family compound overlooking Devil Lake.

08 Rising Mountain 376 Draw Drive Client Compass/ Steven Shane Realty; Location Aspen, Colorado, US; Single family residence; Status Concept

376 Draw Drive presents a rare opportunity to develop a residence on a uniquely dramatic geographical location with close proximity to both the surrounding Aspen mountains and vibrant local community. Designed specifically for the site’s panoramic views of Aspen Mountain, our vision for 376 Draw Drive is Risingmountain: a cascading series of five terraced glass, stone, and timber pavilions that ascend along the steep ridge elevation of Red Mountain.

A FROG'S NARRATIVE The Footprint of The Frog Pendant

Columbia University GSAPP Instructors: Cruz Garcia, Nathalie Frankowski

The frog pendant from the Venado Beach area is now collected and exhibited in the Michael C Rockefeller Wing section of the met. The history of the acquisition was parallel with the history of Panama Canal colonization. Through the process, it raises questions about the ethics and rights of the attaining process, arguing for repatriation and return.

XIJINGYU SHADOW PLAY THEATER A Reunion of the Lost Villagers

Tianjin University Instructors: Xiaolei Gong, Gang Feng

The shadow puppet theater is located in the northeast corner of Xijingyu, focusing on the interactive nature of inheriting the art of shadow puppetry and its initiative in creating a rural atmosphere. The viewing of shadow puppetry is more flexible and free, and the performance becomes a catalyst for the interaction between people, and the common experience generated by this interaction is precisely an important factor to enhance cultural cohesion. The site area is 4,563 square meters, and the building area is 4,200 square meters. It is located at the highest point of the village and is the visual focus. Therefore, it is considered to use frosted glass bricks to show the stage of the performance to the whole village. The nearby villagers can watch the performance projected on the glass screen. Even if the distant villagers cannot see the content, the lighting itself is reminiscent of the shadow play culture.
