CROSSING THE RAILWAY: PAGEZY ZAC Montpellier, france - diploma project director of studies : e. nebout - 2016 11
The strategy of urban projects lies in a global focus, bringing in a scenario, which breaks down into a series of targeted responses. We identified several hotspots, their constraints and their issues. Ultimately, they are meant to be revealed, activated. The main issue for the Pagézy ZAC is to (re)connect it with the city. The project participates in transforming a current urban rift by breaking down the site in three entities: articulations, links and locations. The articulations correspond to the junctions with the ZAC’s surrounding environment. And the links refer to CROISSANCE URBAINE the work on the public lots in between the articulations. Finally, the locations Le récit métropolitain correspond to both architectural proposals on the site. The city of the past was carved on mechanic and speed imagery. The latter prioritized the various networks, fragmented the city and ignored the capillarity. Surely it has opened new possibilities, shortened distance... but at the same time made close connections somehow complex.

The National Drama Center (NDC) is enshrined in the metropolitan history of Montpellier, placed 1 along the historical axis connecting the Promenade du Peyrou to the Lez river. NDCs are major tools for theater creation and production in which all aspects of drama converge within one same facility—research, writing, creation, performance and education, their three main missions being CREATE, DISCOVER and LEARN. The outside corridors unify the building, girdling it and expressing its « bridge » feature by linking the different slabs from the high and low city. The corridors are inspired by the passageways built around XIXth century theaters like the Théatre de la Comédie Française. For a long time theaters were synonym for monumentality in the city, whereas the NDC, 69 to the contrary, endorses its public interest role as it is open to all. The issue at stake was to put in a fluid path, legible and welcoming. The NDC was designed around the onlooker’s vision, around the game of « seeing and being seen ». Everything in theaters is made so as to create connections between people: by elaborating role-play dialogs, through the layout of the venue, as well as the acting or the gestural grammar. This theater is an invitation to narration, a narration that gives meaning to a place.

MATABIAU TRIANGLE: ANNO TOWER Toulouse, france - e. nebout studio - 2016
19
The Anno Tower is situated in the Matabiau Triangle, a new neighborhood based on the urban project of Juan Busquets. The plot where the tower arises is the figurehead for the whole urban operation, in that it composes a new facade for the piazza of the historical train station which is planned to become a shopping mall. The mixed-use programming combines shopping units on the ground floor, followed by three storeys of offices and is ended up with various housing typologies throughout twelve levels. The ring-shaped architectural writing comes from the succession of large balcony openings facing the living-rooms but which are pinched at the party walls. The whole is unified by this will for a ÂŤdemocratic towerÂť. The bioclimatic qualities of the project include a rain water recovery system, a solar heat collector and a heat recovery system.

Rather than plain, its grid-based construction system is reminiscent of a nautilus. Based on the golden section, the modules allow for several housing sizes : either two, three or four bedrooms. Such an organisation offers fluid spaces, which are naturally separated throughout its coil. From the outside in, this layout leads you through shared and widely open spaces on into the bedrooms, which are nestled in the hollow of the Nautil’home.

ON THE TRACKS OF SETE : BEYOND THE LIMITS Sete, france - p. buffard studio - 2015 27
Since the city of Sète on the SouthEastern French coast is lacking in attractiveness today and its whole industrial harbour is low in activity, ‘‘On the tracks of Sète’’ uses la PointeCourte neighborhood as a pattern for inspiration. Both its atmosphere and quality of life are the guidelines for this new district. Indeed, it is a little fishermen’s quarter where houses expand in an inviting way onto the streets, called ‘‘traverses’’. ‘‘Beyond the limits’’ expresses how new public spaces will spread out as thresholds rather than limits, therefore reconnecting with the 19th century part of town. Similarly, the new blocks work as thresholds out to the fallow land, preserving parts of the current land within the new landscape inside the blocks in reminiscence of the genius loci rather than opting for an out-dated tabula rasa. 28

THE SKALLI WINERY : LA CITE DE LA MUSIQUE Sete, france - c.berrou/l.gleizes studio - 2015
31
The rehabilitation of the Skalli winery into the Cité de la Musique is the first step towards the whole transformation of the industrial wastelands of Sète. The architectural concept translates the idea of floating spaces. The new building is conceived as the « negative » of the winery. To interrelate with its stone twin, it disappears behind a polycarbonate veil, revealing its wood structure. The winery’s in-between space then becomes the new city door for the upcoming neighborhoods that will be situated in the midst of the industrial wastelands. 32

On a two-week period at EMBT studios we worked on a competition phase for a stimulating project based in China. The Vanke Cloud competition proposed a large mixed-use programme combining dwellings, offices, schools and a shopping mall. The project is situated in a new business district, the « Silicon Valley Creative City » of China, in Guangzhou’s suburbs. In the North of the plot rises Tiantang Mount and the project is surrounded by marshlands. A former stream crossing the site constitutes the central green corridor of the project, renewing with the genius loci. The school is organised around several patios, favoring interactions between people and events. The shopping mall is to be the central piece of the project, spreading along the green corridor. This space offers an atrium in between the future metro station and the inside of the complex.

NEW TOURISTIC TERRITORIES THE ABBEY CULTURAL CENTER Aniane, france - j.brion/p.ladoux studio - 2014 43
The intervention on the abbey of Aniane stresses openness. As it stands today the abbey turns its back to the city and is totally withdrawn into itself, especially since it was last used as a prison for children. The first door towards openness reactivates the strip as follows : from the city through the abbey out to the landscape. In order to reconnect these two extremes a couple of entries are broken through along the forecourt and the chapel. Moreover, a new belvedere is then entirely available to the city. This whole public space, planted with cypresses organised into rows, which highlight the new sequence, creates visual permeability centering on the landscape as well as circulation permeability where the trees act as a natural guide path for visitors coming out from the city towards the cultural center. 44

CONCEPTS FOR A RESPONSIBLE AND USER-CENTERED DESIGN First of all, capitalizing on the ground floor area will maximise [ F I R S T Fexposure L O O R ] onto the street. Next, we create a hands-on and easy maintenance environment--particulary for cleaning staff--by providing storage rooms on each floor, for instance. ‘‘User-centered Design’’ means creating a staff-functional layout with separate entries and a common staff room. The choice of materials such as Corian and resin define the new inside identity, while preserving the initial spirit of the Seeko’o Hotel.

PATRICK AROTCHAREN STUDIO INTERNSHIP WORK Bayonne, france - 2014 51
Š Patrick Arotcharen Architecture
This internship was an opportunity for me to be part of one of the most active and dynamic architectural workforces in the French Basque Country. At first, I worked on the final phase of the Grand Parc project in Bordeaux, France--a pair of buildings for 69 households. I was in charge of drawing the facades of the buildings, from global composition to constructive details. This experience gave me a chance to work under pressure and short deadlines. The second mission I was charged with--alongside other architects in the studio--consisted in the first design concepts and implantation phase of the Colas construction company’s offices. This enabled me to participate in the genesis of a whole new project.

INFERNO INSTALLATION ART WORKSHOP & EXHIBITION Montpellier, fr. - alain lapierre - 2014 54
The Inferno installation was inspired by the reading of Dante Alighieri’s Divina Commedia and especially by Botticcelli’s Map of Hell. This 1:1 scale installation was part of the BUZZ #5 exhibition of the Aperto Gallery in Montpellier whose theme was ‘‘The Cabinet of Curiosities’’. The 1.5 cubic meter piece--mainly building on light and shadows-is an abstract representation of Hell made of thin wooden strata. There are 9 strata referring to the 9 concentric levels of Hell as depicted in the famous painting. The contrast between the central cone of light and the dark edges expresses the fall of the human soul. The central idea was to build light and express emptiness to the visitor’s eye as one’s look falls down into the eye of the Inferno.

4032 WERNERIA ART WORKSHOP & EXHIBITION Montpellier, fr. - e. etienne - 2016 56
In collaboration with the School of Fine Arts of Montpellier, our photographic project 4032 Werneria was selected to be part of the traveling exhibition organised by the SKENE collective of artists. Inspired by ideas developed in my master’s thesis, I explored the Botanical Institute of Montpellier in order to experience several photo montages. This space is in a spatio-temporal inbetween since the Botanical Institute has been abandoned. The pictures present silhouettes as a way to personify and symbolize the perceived sensations and atmospheres. Black and white pictures underline the spaces, then uncovered. Along through my Urbex (Urban Exploration), several periods seemed to overlay, as if the space in itself was a herbarium, collecting and preserving the successive ages. Hence, even in such a silent place, we could almost hear the whispers of the past. Travelling, tilted framings, top-down and bottom-up views, zooming, focal settings, contrasts, composition, blurs were as many processes used in this photographic montage experiment.
