INDIGENOUS VIETNAMESE MINORITIES OF SAPA Vietnam is a country with many ethnic groups. In the early 2000’s the estimation was that the largest ethnic groups were the Kinh, which makes up for 86.2% of the total population. The remaining Vietnamese minorities include the Tay (1.9%), Tai Ethnic (1.7%), Mường (1.5%), Khmer Krom (1.4%), Hoa (1.1%), Nùng (1.1%) and the Hmong (1%). These Vietnamese minorities live scattered throughout the country. They all still follow their indigenous cultures which make traveling to the remote places in Vietnam such an adventurous experience.

In the Sapa district of the Lào Cai province you will mainly find the Hmong, Dao (Yao), Giáy, Pho Lu, and Tay people. These Vietnamese minorities are living an ordinary life in the midst of some of the most beautiful rice paddies you will ever encounter. Tourism has been booming in Sapa, exactly because these beautiful sceneries. But the local people still strongly depend on their local customs.

Large families of the Vietnamese minorities have been living here for decades and they have been expanding their rice production according to the family demand. Most travel magazines will show you the Banaeu Ricefields of the Philippines, but the smaller valley of the Sapa district is just as impressive.

When you are planning on visiting Hanoi, then do not forget to travel north to Sapa. It will most definitely be worth your time. And once you are here, rent yourself a motorbike or acquire the services of a local tour guide to show you around. You have not seen Vietnam without a visit to the Vietnamese minorities of the northern mountains.
