Useful Tips for Surfers Shared by Thomas Salzano

Surfing is one of the must do activities in almost everybody’s bucket list. Riding waves, tackling them to stay on board, like literally on the board is something that looks super cool. Plus, the attention you get after good surf is something worth a shot, right? I, Thomas Salzano, a New Jersey based hairstylist and an avid traveler, photographer and blogger, have some good and useful tips for all the budding surfers out there.

I won’t start with the regular “don’t learn yourself, get a teacher” because, let’s face it, you know this is obvious and utterly important. Let’s start with something that matters the most, you. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Stay fit and lean Start with a big surfboard Don’t jump to hard top surfboard right away Stay away from experienced surfers Paddle, paddle, paddle, get wiped out, and repeat

Stay Fit and Lean

The more muscle and weight you gain, the more work your paddling muscles (lats and shoulders) will need to do. Stay lean and work on improving your relative strength. Maintain a strong core to stay balanced while surfing.

Start with a Big Surfboard

Bigger surfboards will help you get more waves, learn basic surfing mechanisms easily and more efficiently, and give you more room to maneuver.

Don’t Jump to Hard Top Surfboard Right Away

Don’t jump to hard top surf board right away: Doing so will only hamper your experience. As a beginner, you’ll spend more time paddling and sitting. So you won’t need a hard or small surf board right away.

Stay Away from Experienced Surfers

It is for your own and their safety. Experienced surfers like to surf on bigger, more aggressive waves. Anywhere close to them means you are around big waves, a place where you don’t want to be. Don’t compromise on safety, your and others’.

Paddle, Paddle, Paddle, Get Wiped out, and Repeat

Like literally. This is what’s going to happen initially. You’ll be paddling a lot and you’ll be getting wiped out a lot. Just keep going.

One last tip for today: bend your knees. Bending at back creates imbalance and looks awful too. This is Thomas Salzano, your go to guy for useful tips on hairstyling, traveling, photography and almost everything revolving around the, ciao!
