Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are predicted to penetrate the global lighting market with a 61% share by 2020. Lighting is a $115 billion global industry. General lighting, defined as anything other than automotive or backlighting, accounts for 75% of the total lighting market. Lighting accounts for 27% of all energy consumption. Until roughly five years ago, LED technology had not reached a level of light output that could rival traditional light sources. Recent advancements in the phosphor coating on LEDs have allowed for the development of high-lumen output diodes. LED technology is rapidly advancing, contributing to constantly decreasing component prices. Upstream component manufacturers are already becoming commodotized and consolidated. The lighting marketplace is shifting from analog lighting (incandescent/fluorescent) to digital (LED) much in the same way photography and television has made the leap from film to solid-state media. Lighting equipment used to be a disposable commodity--if a bulb burned out, it was thrown away. When used in the right conditions, LEDs may very well outlive their owners. Midstream manufacturers, like Noribachi, are in a priviledged position--by focusing on applications rather than base technology, we have greater product flexibility, increased value added, and a sharper competitive edge.

TECHNOLOGY A diode is a one-way electrical valve. A light emitting diode (LED) is a valve that lights up when electricity is applied to it. LEDs illuminate with DC current; they require a power supply to regulate and convert current from the AC grid. The power supply is also instrumental in controling light output. Because LED light output is directly related to the amount of current passing through them, LEDs can be made brighter with simply more current. However this also negatively affects an LED’s lifetime. High lumen output white LEDs, such as those that Noribachi uses, are actually a blue LED that is covered with phosphorous coatings to achieve a white hue. Warm white LED, like those that match traditional incandescents, are made in the same way with different coatings. LEDs produce directional light. This means that they have a specific beam angle outside of which illumination decreases almost completely. This is helpful for reducing light pollution and is a factor to consider when lighting large areas evenly. LED illumination is scotopic, meaning that it is received by different receptors in the human eye than other forms of artifical lighting, which are termed photopic. This allows the human eye to percieve LED illumination as brighter, when in fact the measured lumen output may be lower.

GLOSSARY ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) The term AC refers to the flow of electric charge that periodically reverses direction. AC is the form of electricity that is delivered to homes and businesses.

AMPERE (AMP) An ampere, or “amp” as it is commonly shortened to, is the metric measure of the constant amount of electric charge passing a point in an electric circuit during a given point in time (usually second). Household circuit breakers normally provide 15-20 A of current to a set of standard wall outlets.

COLOR-RENDERING INDEX (CRI) CRI or color-rendering index, refers to the quality of color perception that a light source provides. Scaled from 0-100, daylight is considered to be 100 CRI and the standard against all artifical lamps. LEDs have a high CRI, usually in the range of 75-95. Lights with high CRIs producing “white” illumination.

COMMISSION

A percentage or the “cut” you earn from the total sale you close. This is when you start making the big bucks.

CURRENT

A current is the flow of electric charge through an electrical conductor. A current is measured in amps.

DIMMING Controling the brightness of light, usually to reduce the amount of brightness a light is emitting.

DIRECT CURRENT (DC) The term DC refers to the flow of electric charge that is unidirectional. DC is the form of electricity that is produced by sources such as batteries, solar cells, and is usually converted from AC to power electrical devices in the home through a driver or power supply.

DLC & ENERGY STAR You are probably familiar with Energy Star, a government organization that qualifies energy efficient products for rebates. DLC stands for Design Lights Consortium. They are a private group that qualifies solid-state lighting products. Currently the DLC is the de-facto standard for commercial and industrial lighting. Products listed with the DLC are qualified to receive rebates from a network of utilities across the country.

DRIVER (POWER SUPPLY) A driver or power supply is a device that supplies electrical power to an electrical load so that it may convert the power from one form of energy to another. Power supplies obtain energy from either an AC or DC line, batteries, fuel cells, generators, or converted from a solar panel.

EFFICACY Efficacy refers to the ratio of light output to power consumed. It is measured in lumens per watt. LEDs generally have a high efficacy, meaning they produce the most light as in relations to the amount of power they use.

ELECTRICITY The physical phenomena associated with the presence and flow of electric charge.

20

noribachi.com 855.283.1100

ENERGY

Electrical energy refers to potential energy before it is delivered to the end-use/customer.

ETL, UL, & CSA These are acronyms of three different NRTLs (Nationally Recognized Testing Labratory). CSA is a Canadian alternative. These labs test products to verify manufacturer claims. When certified by one, it is recognized as meeting the others’ standards. Noribachi uses Intertek, which is ETL (Edison Testing Laboratory) for our testing.

FOOTCANDLES Footcandles are the Imperial unit of measurement use to calculate adequate lighting levels of workspaces in buildings or out doors. It is the illuminace cast on a surface by a one-candela (the metric unit of luminous intensity) or the rough equivalent of a lit candle.

JUNCTION TEMPERATURE The junction temperature is the temperature of the LED at the junction with its physical pad. For LEDs to work properly they must conduct heat through the metal surfaces they are mounted on. Junction temperatures affect the lifetime of LEDs and the cooler it is, the longer LEDs will last.

KELVIN (COLOR TEMPERATURE)

COLOR TEMPERATURE

Color temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin, a metric unit of temperature. The higher the number, the cooler or bluer the light is. Warm White (WW) is 2500k, Cool White (CW) is 4000k, and Natural White (NW) is 6500k.

2500k (WW) 4000k (CW)

5000k

6500k (NW)

LM-79 & LM-80 These are tests for solid-state lighting products administered by a Nationally Recognized Testing Labratory. LM-79 relates to general specifications such as luminous flux and power consumption. LM-80 measures light depreciation over time.

LUMENS Lumens are the metric units derived from luminous flux or the amount of visible light emitted by a source. A lumen is one lux per square meter.

LUX The metric unit of illuminance or the intensity of light. It is equivalent to one lumen per square meter.

NORIBACHI

Not Japanese. A portmanteau of “noor,” which is Arabic for light, and “Dibachi,” the last name of our founders. A synonym for “awesome.”

POWER

Power refers to the the rate at which an electric current flows through a circuit. Power is measured in Watts.

VOLTAGE The voltage between two ends of a path is the total energy required to move a charge along that path, divided by the magnitude of the charge. This is the potential for an electric charge. A current can flow from lower voltage to higher voltage, only if an energy source is powerful enought to push it to the opposing electric field.

WATTAGE The rate of energy transfer is measured in watts, which are equal to one joule per second. Wattage describes the amount of power an electrical device requires to function. A 40W incandescant bulb can be easily replaced with a 9W LED bulb that offers exponentially more lumens and lifetime hours.

HISTORY Noribachi was founded in 2008 by Silicon Valley entreperneurs Farzad and Rhonda Dibachi. Early notables in the burgeoning software technology industry, Farzad and Rhonda worked together to create Niku, an internet sofware company, as well as Diba, which pioneered the concept of internet appliances. Noribachi was founded as a clean-energy incubator. After experimenting with various technologies in the flourishing clean-tech world, such as solar and thermo-electric elements, the Dibachis realized that a small new area of light emitting diodes (LED) lighting promised to deliver real value and an attractive return on investment. One fateful afternoon, Farzad decided to take down a light pole in Noribachi’s parking lot and retrofit it with LED. The result was a new direction for the company. Noribachi’s earliest lights were built with single LEDs soldered into a chain. Today, Noribachi has an expansive product line of high-output LED lights built with modular light engines scalable from as little as six diodes to as many as 378 in one light. With the rising cost of living, the use of energy has moved from the last thing people think about to being a top priority. Customers are beginning to realize what it truly costs to live today by having the ability to price every consumable down to the last kilowatt/hour, text message or grape. By switching to Noribachi’s modular LEDs, our customers are able to say they can calculate how much money they’re saving with each light down to the last cent.
