Caravan memories
After reading editor Paul’s recollections of caravan holidays as a child (CCB, August 3), Crewe-based Andrew Lobb has written in to agree that they hold little appeal today: “I’m with you all the way on this one. We had to endure many trips in the Eccles both in the UK and abroad. I can still feel the claustrophobia!” Like Paul, Andrew’s not keen on reliving his own childhood holidays: “Strange that I, too, would rather take my chances in unknown far-flung hotels rather than revisit the towing experience. ” Andrew goes on to explain that his father progressed from caravans to large motorhomes in later years, the latter allowing him to “inflict further suffering on the good people of idyllic spots in narrow-laned areas of the UK. ”
So, come on all you happy caravanners… do your best to convince Paul and Andrew that they’re missing out by opting for hotels over campsites. And if you’re the proud owner of a classic caravan or camper, we’d love to see photographs.
Advanced Herald
By 1967, the Triumph Herald was getting on in years. But according to this advert, timed to coincide with the Earl’s Court Motor Show, it was “the most advanced family car in Britain today” , despite its continued use of a separate chassis.
Advanced? Apparently so, thanks to the Herald’s allindependent suspension, adjustable steering column and 93 per cent visibility. Even its old-fashioned chassis was marketed as a bonus, combining “strength with a low centre of gravity for sports car handling” . The 1967 Herald line-up ranged from £627 for the 1200 saloon through to £711 for the estate.
Old-stock Rovers
Reader Martin Cruddock has been in touch following our recent mentions of old-stock cars that were first registered long after they were produced: “I can remember when MG Rover went bust in April 2005, it was still possible to buy ‘new’ Rovers for two or more years afterwards. In fact, I’ve seen a couple of 08-reg Rover 75s. I think 2008 was the cut-off for registering them new, during to emissions regulations. ”
One of those late-model Rovers is currently for sale via a dealer in Galashiels. The 2006-registered Rover 25 1.4 GLI has covered just 940 miles and is said to be in as-new condition thanks to careful storage. It will be sold with new tyres and a cambelt change, and is currently available for £8995 via adampurvescars.com.
