Golf-loving twosome

Regular readers might recognise the 1976 VW Golf 1.6 LS shown below, as photographs of it have previously appeared in both CCB and our sister title, Classics Monthly. The car was formerly part of the VW Heritage collection, but was recently acquired by reader Jayne Clemo.

Finished in Marino Yellow, the head-turning Mk1 Golf still has just 18,000 miles under its wheels and remains in superb, original condition throughout. Jayne has been enjoying the car in recent weeks, taking it to a handful of events – including VW Action 2022 earlier this month, where the Golf won first prize in the ‘Stock Watercooled’ category.

Keeping Jayne’s Golf company is her husband Vincent’s 1982 GTI, which has been in the family for the last seven years and has just over 70,000 miles on its odometer. The first owner kept the GTI for 20 years and it remains immaculate to this day. Both cars are headturning examples of the Mk1 Golf and are surely the perfect ‘his and hers’ pairing.

Long-lived Spaniard

As you’ll already have read on page 6 of this week’s CCB, Fiat’s 124 saloon – which won the 1967 Car of the Year award – had a hugely successful career, remaining on sale throughout Europe until 1974. Other 124-based models were even more long-lived, however, the most famous being the original Lada that went on to sell well in the UK. But there’s another that’s usually overlooked by most Brits, having never been officially sold here: Spain’s SEAT 124.

Fiat’s Spanish subsidiary launched its own version of the 124 in 1968, the vast majority being sold in its homeland. In fact, so popular was the SEAT 124 in Spain, it remained in production right through to 1980, despite more modern designs – like the SEAT 128 and 131 – being offered at the same time. This 1978 Seat 124D brochure shows how (new front end aside) this golden oldie changed remarkably little over the years.
