STAR LETTER

NAME CHANGE Dear Ian I know that the magazine has been morphed through the years into different iterations, with the latest Diesel&EcoCar. Do you think Eco really fits the bill, or do you think that Diesel&ElectrifiedCar might be a better description? Really love the magazine, by the way, it beats the others into a cocked hat. Jeremy French Via e-mail Hi Jeremy Thanks for the thought-provoking e-mail, and one that I had thought through myself. I can’t take the credit for coming up with the EcoCar title, it was the legendary Sue Baker that did that many years ago. It was suggested in one of our many driving expeditions throughout the years and was perfect because not only is it a truncation of Economy, but also implies frugality and the latest breed of electrified vehicles. The title is designed to address a multitude of different meanings, and I’m sure you’ll agree that many people picked up Diesel Car for the first time because they had a fondness for economy motoring. The title embraces that entirely, as well as the latest electrified vehicles. Ian

Dear Ian, My wife always says to me that I am like a homing pigeon when we are out and about in the car. Hence why I read the April Question of the Month with great interest, mainly because most of the answers might as well have been written in Chinese. The only one I had total empathy with was the one from the Doctor. Since my driving began in 1962, I have used a combination of road maps, time of day, and position of the sun or the lightest direction if it’s cloudy. It has hardly ever failed me, and is much more reliable and logical than my navigation system at which I have been known to shout, “No you are wrong!!” Even in my hundreds of thousands of miles of driving in Europe over the years, I have clung to my trusted system. I do, however, confess to using the navigation to get out of large town and city centres occasionally. Technology in cars seems to be running riot at the moment to the extent that mankind is even striding towards the concept of driverless vehicles. How utterly boring! Driving with care and skill is, to my mind, an engrossing and pleasurable activity. Since 1966 I have been a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and am proud that I have never had a penalty point or insurance claim. Maybe my aversion to excess technology inclines me towards the opinions of your brilliant Doctor. Yours sincerely, Alan Bradley, Burton on Trent PS. I have been known to sign myself – Al Uddite.
