2023 LDV T60 MAX ARRIVES

LDV has released the 2023 version of their T60 Max, with the new version to “double down” on growing sales that the Chinese-built dual cab ute enjoyed here in the second half of 2022.

“The LDV T60 Max is the backbone of our brand and the new MY23 T60 Max will continue that tradition,” says Dinesh Chinnappa, LDV General Manager.

“We know power is an important factor for ute buyers, particularly tradies who want to go off-roading at weekends, tow the jet ski, or put their bikes in the tray. We also know these tradies are looking for value and the new T60 delivers both in spades.”

FAMILIAR DRIVETRAINS

Underpinning the MY23 T60 Max is the same 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, producing 160kW and 500Nm – the most powerful four-cylinder ute available in Australia.

Transmission options remain unchanged, with either a six-speed manual or eightspeed automatic, but a new addition for 2023 is paddle shift controls for the T60 Max with the auto transmission.

Fuel capacity is unchanged at 73 litres and fuel economy is listed at 9.2lt/100km for the manual and 9.3lt/100km for the auto – also unchanged from the outgoing T60 Max.

The primary changes for the 2023 T60 Max are cosmetic, starting with bodycoloured mirror caps and new 19-inch alloy wheels in black for the T60 Max Luxe manual. On the T60 Max Pro, wheels remain at 17 inches.

Other cosmetic additions and upgrades on the Luxe for 2023 include black wheelarch flares, black side steps, black roof rails and a distinctive sailplane-style sports bar that’s also in black.

On the T60 Max Pro, there’s a chrome sports bar and roof rails, along with new, wider sidesteps. Colour options remain at five, covering white, black, grey, blue and orange.

Both Pro and Luxe variants now include a soft-release tailgate, with a spray-in tub liner to protect the load area.

Four tie-down points remain in the tub, along with unchanged payload capacity of 750kg for the Luxe and 935kg/925kg (manual/auto) for the Pro. Towing capacity for both T60 Max variants is also unchanged at 3,000kg.

Inside, the steering wheel has been updated (with the addition of the aforementioned paddle shifters for the

auto) and both variants of the T60 Max gain a new centre console screen.

The screen size is unchanged at 10.25 inches, but the design is different, with HVAC controls now sitting flush underneath to continue the sleek look. Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth smart phone connectivity is standard.

SAFETY & TECH

As the previous version of the T60 Max already had a 5-star ANCAP safety rating,

the new version is expected to continue this, with carryover safety technologies like ABS, EBD, ESP, Electronic Brake Assist, Hill Descent Control, Traction Control, Vehicle Dynamics Control, Fatigue Reminder and six airbags.

On top of this, the T60 Max Luxe adds a 360-degree camera and Lane Departure Warning.

Convenience and comfort features on both variants include cruise control and climate control, rear parking sensors and rear fog lights. The Luxe adds keyless entry, auto mirrors and six-way, electronically adjustable leather trimmed seats. The Pro carries over for 2023 with cloth seat trim.

WARRANTY UPGRADE

Bigger news than the cosmetic upgrades and minor spec changes on the T60 Max for 2023 is the increased warranty. Previously 5 years or 133,000km, the LDV factory warranty is now 7 years or 200,000km, applicable to both MY23 T60 Max grades.

With the increased warranty and new features comes a price rise of around 10 per cent compared to MY22 pricing. The T60 Max range now starts at $41,042 for the entry-level Max Pro manual, rising to $49,463 for the “mega tub” that’s on a 315mm longer wheelbase than the standard models and includes a 275mm longer tub.

According to LDV, the T60 Max Pro offers $2,600 in extra value, with $5,000 in value for the T60 Max Luxe. Special driveaway deals are in place for ABN holders, starting at $38,990.

RANGER RAPTOR TRIUMPHS AT BAJA 1000

An Australian developed and built Ford Ranger Raptor race vehicle has proven the capabilities and endurance of the nextgeneration Ranger, successfully completing the annual Baja 1000 off-road race in Mexico.

Ford has a long history of success at the Baja 1000, including with earlier generations of the Ranger, in the 1980s and ’90s. More recently, an F-150 Raptor won its class at Baja and Ford also campaigned a prototype of the all-new Bronco in the annual desert race ahead of its public launch.

For the Ranger’s return to Baja in 2022, Ford Performance called in resources from around the globe, including Kelly Racing here in Australia (better known for their time in Supercars), which took a stock Ranger Raptor and incorporated the various additions to make it race ready.

As the vehicle was entered in the ‘Stock Mid-Size’ class, modifications were limited.

The 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, ten-speed auto transmission and suspension were all unchanged from stock, but wheel and tyre upgrades are allowed and underbody protection can be added, too. A long-range fuel tank was added, along with various safety features and lighting upgrades, as the Baja 1000 sees competitors race the desert course into the night.

“It’s a difficult race to go and enter any vehicle into, let alone a production vehicle, and the Ranger Raptor we’re racing isn’t far off what you can drive off the showroom floor,” explained Justin Capicchiano, Ford Performance and Special Vehicles Engineering Manager, Australia.

To transform a stock Ranger Raptor into a race-ready vehicle, Kelly Racing were given ten weeks, which Todd Kelly described as intense.

“The team at Ford Performance in Australia and the U.S. were amazing and while the nights were long, I’m so glad I got involved in this project,” Kelly said.

“I’d heard the stories about this Ranger Raptor, but it wasn’t until I got my hands on

it and drove the thing that I realised just how impressive it is. The powertrain, the chassis, the suspension have been built to do Baja, so all we had to do was work within the rules of the class and fit the cage, the fuel system and safety gear.”

After completion, Kelly Racing tested the ute here in Australia before it was shipped to the US for fine tuning by Lovell Racing and Huseman Engineering.

To drive the race-prepped Ranger Raptor at the Baja 1000, Ford Performance pulled together a team that included Brad Lovell, Byam Lovell, Loren Healy, Paul Blangstead, Eric Davis and Jason Hutter, along with the father and son team of Andy and Danny

Brown, better known for their global aftermarket accessories business ARB.

Curt LeDuc, an Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer in the US, managed the factorybacked effort.

Being a near-stock vehicle, the Ranger Raptor remained in right-hand drive configuration, which was an additional challenge for the US drivers. It also ran a low-carbon biofuel supplied by Shell, with refuelling and basic maintenance the only interactions allowed throughout the race.

Being the only entry in the Stock Mid-Size class, Ford was using the Baja 1000 more as a test of the Ranger Raptor’s durability than beating competitors or chasing the outright win.

While more than 100 competitors failed to finish, the Ranger Raptor completed the two-day, 1000-mile (1,600km) event without a major incident and was able to be driven back to Ford Performance’s base in California.

“Ford Performance Australia put their heart and soul into this project, with Kelly Racing to start us off,” said Brian Novak, Off-Road Motorsports Supervisor, Ford Performance. “When we took it over on the North American side with Lovell Racing and Huseman Engineering, it all came together seamlessly. There’s just so many people that came together to do this, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

The Browns were equally proud to be a part of the successful project.

“Coming over here and entering this event has been on our bucket list for years,” said ARB Managing Director Andy Brown. “The Ranger Raptor? What a truck - it feels ready to go again. I can’t believe how reliable it was, how strong, how stout, how it handles, how it goes, how it stops. It’s just the complete package.”

Near-stock version of dual cab ute masters the gruelling conditions at annual Mexican off-road race.

Converted Ranger Raptor remained street legal, so was driven back to base after the race.

What sort of vehicle do adventurers, explorers and emergency services want for extreme environments? If British company Fering have read the market correctly, it’s their ‘Pioneer’, a lightweight, long range, four-wheel drive ute with all the capabilities of a diesel-powered 4x4, but offering less complexity and a lot less pollution.

The Pioneer is the brainchild of exFerrari and McLaren engineer Ben ScottGeddes, who has taken what he’s learnt with cutting edge supercar and racing technologies to create a vehicle that combines environmental responsibility with what he claims are unrivalled off-thegrid capabilities.

Scott-Geddes leads a team at Fering that includes designers, engineers and fabricators with experience across the automotive industry - from compact city EVs to military vehicles and premium supercars – as well as the aeronautical and marine industries.

The team also includes Mac McKenney, who has planned, trained, equipped and undertaken various automotive expeditions in hostile and remote environments around the world for more than 25 years.

LITTLE, BUT STRONG

Underpinning the Fering Pioneer is a lightweight aluminium spaceframe chassis with a compact footprint that’s no larger than a car-based delivery van and no heavier than a modern hatchback. Composite materials integrated into the aluminium spaceframe help keep the off-road ute down to around 1,500kg, but a greater contribution is made by the use of fabric coverings for several external panels. Such an approach was taken with ‘light cars’ a century ago and was also seen on some post-war invalid cars and microcars.

For the Pioneer, the fabric chosen is a canvas found in sails and high-end hiking boots. Its advantages, beyond reducing the vehicle’s weight, include being easy to replace and offering better in-vehicle insulation properties than conventional metal-skinned panels, according to Fering.

A UK company is about to start the second phase of development on an off-roader that will enable maximum attack with minimum impact.

“We are planning on expanding the use of fabric to other parts of the vehicle, such as the inner wings, where we are sure it will have excellent noise insulation properties in addition to saving weight and complexity,” Scott-Geddes says.

The construction of the spaceframe, its light overall weight and the configuration of the Pioneer’s suspension means it can carry its own weight – 1,500kg - making it valuable for hauling firefighting apparatus into remote locations, medical equipment and/or patients following off-road accidents, mining gear and tools underground, explorers and expedition equipment or even a small squad of soldiers, as military use could be another application for the Pioneer.

READY FOR THE ROUGH

Along with the aforementioned features, off-road capability comes from the use of large - 22.5-inch - wheels that are designed to take commonly-available truck tyres, ensuring replacements are more likely to be found, even in remote areas.

As truck tyres are usually of thicker wall construction, it makes them more durable for the kinds of extreme environments the Pioneer is likely to be used in, while the light weight of the Pioneer means they’re subjected to less stress. Additionally, as truck tyres are often recapped, it reduces tyre waste, furthering the Pioneer’s green credentials.

The narrow cross section of truck tyres may be seen as a disadvantage off-road, but

according to Scott-Geddes, that’s not the case.

The most unusual feature on the Pioneer is its fabriccovered body panels.

“To get a big patch of rubber in contact with the ground, you can either have wide tyres, or have them tall, but narrower,” ScottGeddes explains. “The latter option gives big benefits in off-road situations and makes the contact patch longitudinal.”

While the Pioneer’s tyres will be commonly available, the wheels are custom made and unique to the vehicle, designed to

offset the weight of the tyres to some degree, as well as being resistant to damage, simple to remove and easy to clean.

Specifications for the Pioneer’s suspension and brakes haven’t been revealed, other than to say the former is “sophisticated” and offers a lot of travel, with the latter mounted inboard on both the front and rear axles.

For all its practical touches, the Pioneer has one element that seems like a pure design feature in the form of a Union Jack that’s moulded into the ute’s tailgate. However, Fering says even this is functional, as the stampings to create the flag motif serve as strengthening ribs.

EV AND CLEAN FUEL

The Pioneer comes with four-wheel drive as standard, with both axles driven by electric motors. The type and capacity of these motors hasn’t been revealed, but Fering say they are “Best in Class” and produce a combined 800Nm of torque, which exceeds that of many diesel-powered 4x4s.

The drivetrain configuration allows either one of the driven axles to be deactivated in less demanding environments, while mounting the motors inboard ensures good wheel clearance in boggy conditions and over loose surfaces.

Initial design proposal for the Pioneer dates back to 2021.

degrade with repeated power cycling like some batteries do.

The battery allows for a claimed range of around 80km, but recognising the impracticality of this for long expeditions and other applications in off-the-grid environments, there’s a range extender in the form of an 800c three-cylinder internal combustion engine.

Like the electric motors and battery, the origins of the three-cylinder engine are unknown, but it’s likely from a production ATV of some type, with Kubota and Perkins producing engines in this capacity and configuration.

Fuelled by biodiesel to reduce emissions and improve efficiency, the 800cc triple is only used to charge the battery, not drive the wheels. With this engine in place, range extends to a claimed 7,000km with longrange tanks fitted. For applications where such range isn’t needed, the auxiliary tanks can be replaced with freshwater tanks or additional equipment.

Fuel economy is said to be exceptional, with the claimed 50mpg being around double the mileage of conventional diesel 4x4s, according to Fering, and closer to what you’d find in a modern diesel-engined hatchback.

The standard drivetrain can be replaced with alternatives, reflecting what the vehicle’s application might be or the fuels available in that area, like alcohol-fuelled engines in Brazil, for example. Fering says larger batteries can be incorporated into the Pioneer’s modular design, too.

PHASE 2 BEGINS

In December, Fering announced that, following extensive testing of their ‘Prototype 1’ development ute at the UK’s Milbrook Proving Ground, two more prototypes will be produced in 2023, using what’s been learned on the original to incorporate upgrades.

“Driving over the obstacles showed the very good natural ability of the Pioneer in severe off-road conditions,” Scott-Geddes

explains. “It was able to traverse all the physical standard obstacles we tried without any issue, including those intended to challenge much larger and extreme military vehicles.

“The off-road capability is exceptional, proving our design philosophy of low overall weight, large diameter tyres and long wheel travel works brilliantly.”

Key to moving forward with Prototype 2 and Prototype 3 has been securing funding, which Fering credits to demonstrations of the Pioneer they’ve conducted to show its capabilities.

Customers have been confirmed, too, and while they are organisations, not individuals, Fering has not confirmed who those organisations are.

Fering’s next batch of prototype testing with the Pioneer EV 4x4 is due to be completed in mid-2023, with low-volume production to commence later in the same year, ahead of large-scale production in 2025.

The first Pioneer prototype has successfully completed testing in the UK on dedicated off-road courses designed to break vehicles.

We thought the last VDJ79 ‘Cruiser project Blüsteele made was a monster...but we were wrong!

Lack of towing power, inability to pickup and overtake, temperatures running hot under heavy load, dusty air getting into the engine, ordinary sounding exhaust system… If these all sound familiar to anyone with a Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series, then you certainly don’t have the modifications that Blüsteele have made to their monster 79 Series dual-cab.

When choosing a new Survivor 4x4 project car to follow another 79 Series from a couple of years ago (which we’ve previously covered), the option was simple: do another 79 Series! Well not quite, and as loyal JUST 4x4s followers will know, Blüsteele did recently finish a Mitsubishi Triton and Ford Ranger project in-between the two because the team there just can’t get enough of modifying manual-equipped 4x4s. In fact, there is yet another project coming after this that Nissan Navara fans

But back to our hero here, the 1100Nm LandCruiser which not only looks the goods but is a true clutch-buster. It would be a brave (or perhaps dense) tuner that would even attempt to build such a mammoth machine with a sub-par clutch kit.

looks absolutely sensational. The standard Sandy Taupe paint colour already has a throwback to early LandCruisers, but it is the custom graphics by GRG Design in Carrum Downs which give a distinctly retro vibe and match the boxy design which is iconic. The marketing light bulb moment was matching the camper, which has already trooped from GSL in Queensland to Victoria, in the same livery.

While the 70 Series has been an icon on Australian roads for decades, its potential viability came to a crisis point not long ago when ADR rules around side-impact

crash testing would see it removed from sale. However, ingeniously, Toyota skirted around the new crash regulations by simply increasing GVM to 3510kg, which classifies it as a light truck (medium goods vehicle) and exempt from the ADR’s side impact rule. There are also a few new additions in equipment to the new model you can thankfully still buy off the showroom floor, but it’s largely the same vehicle that you see here, and most importantly it will still continue to offer a 4.5-litre turbo diesel V8 engine with five-speed manual transmission.

While we’ll get to all of the other accessories Blüsteele has added on, let’s have a closer look at the heart of the 4x4 –its modified diesel V8 producing 1100Nm at the flywheel. That’s an incredible 200 per cent lift in torque over the factory donk!

Modification, fabrication and tuning were performed by GSL FAB near the Gold Coast in Queensland – a highly experienced workshop when it comes to LandCruiser performance. One look under the bonnet and you can see that all of the work has been finished to a meticulous standard, including the twin four-inch stainless steel Stylecraft canopy includes a fridge, plenty of weatherproof storage and provision for two spare wheels.

exhaust system with high flow DPF (yes, it remains fully compliant and legal) that delivers a deep throbbing note out the back.

Part of the changes includes the GSL Intense Turbo upgrade, new +50 high-flow Denso “super quiet” fuel injectors, a PWR elite intercooler with top mount fans, fabricated stainless steel intake, JMAX high-flow twin K&N filter air box (with a fantastic transparent case), and a Safari Armax snorkel. The lot was put on the dyno and tuned by Scott – GSL’s engineering master tuner.

Despite 1100Nm on tap from this LandCruiser's heavily-modified turbodiesel V8, the addition of Blüsteele's Survivor 4x4 Series clutch kit handles all that torque and makes for a factory-like feel on the clutch pedal.

“At GSL Fab, we take the lead in the diesel performance industry,” he says. “We deal exclusively in common rail diesel performance and aftermarket performance upgrades. The majority of our customers are Toyota LandCruiser owners - but we don’t limit ourselves to Toyota. We also work on a multitude of other common rail diesel-powered cars including Isuzu, Mazda, Holden and more.”

If the work on other makes is anything to go by, GSL has a knack for transforming diesel engines. The V8 in the LandCruiser can’t be called underdone even in stock

form, but this reimagined powerplant removes the lazy pick-up and power slump that the factory unit has. Instead, there’s instant buzz and movement off the line –even with the rear tray loaded and two fullsize spare tyres – and the incredible grunt doesn’t stop pulling along until you say so. In fact, the 0-100km/h time becomes relevant again, and overtaking at 100km/h isn’t a question as you know there’s more than enough zip underfoot to quickly dispatch moving traffic.

“We started the family business over a decade ago after a first-hand experience

of the underwhelming performance of our Toyota LandCruiser 79 series ute,” Scott continues when explaining how they came to be specialists in 70-Series tuning.

"We knew this ute was capable of more, without sacrificing the reliability that Toyota is known for. So, we started solving problems. Lack of towing power, inability to pick-up and overtake, temperatures running hot under heavy load, dusty air getting into the engine, ordinary sounding exhaust system. We knew what people wanted - we just needed enough time to create the solution to the problem.

Indeed, this is unquestionably one of the most well-rounded 70-Series we’ve driven that has so much power and torque on tap. It’s powerful, it’s tight, and it is incredibly smooth. In fact, it’s so smooth it has the same clutch feel as the factory LandCruiser, despite packing a Survivor 4x4 Series clutch and flywheel kit from Blüsteele. But as we’ve come to know from testing Blüsteele’s modified 4x4s and clutch kits, they are some of the best in the business and the engineering knowledge shows in real-life use.

Interior changes include Recaro seats with Black Swan covers, PVS steering wheel and shifter knobs, new floor and roof consoles, and a Kenwood sound system upgrade.

Key to the natural feel of this clutch kit is that it retains factory standard pedal pressure to operate the heavy-duty clutch plate. There’s also a high-performance organic friction plate with added cushion for a quieter idle, an upgraded billet chromoly claw-grooved flywheel, premium thrust bearing and spigot bearing and a silicone rear main oil seal. All kits come with an alignment tool, and new flywheel and clutch pressure plate bolts, too.

Given that so much grunt here is only using the Stage 1 kit, there's huge potential for anyone keen enough to go ballistic with engine modification – in fact, GSL’s own ‘Frankenmule’ LandCruiser does a standing quart mile in 9 seconds (check out the videos on YouTube!).

What we love about Blüsteele’s newest creation though, is that it feels like a welltied-down and reliable rig despite the big upgrades. It’s also extremely purposeful and tastefully decked out with new PVS LED headlights and Offroad Animal front bar, driving light bars and side steps. At the rear is a Stylecraft custom-made canopy with a bar fridge and plenty of storage. It also holds two spares for the huge 35” ROH wheels and tyres. Of course, getting those underneath saw a lift which increases ride height a further 75mm. There’s no stopping this off the beaten track.

Inside is equally kitted out and all seats have been swapped with four Recaro pews. PVS items include the new steering wheel, gearshift knobs and replacement floor and roof consoles – the latter housing a GMF UHF radio. The stock entertainment system was also replaced with a 10” Kenwood audio system that has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

As for what’s next, the team at Blüsteele has yet another interesting project that we'll be looking at soon, based on the Nissan Navara – no doubt it will be an equally unique build with its own character!

What you’re looking at here is arguably the most over-the-top, adventure-ready Land Rover Defender you can get that’s still legal for the road. Little wonder then that it’s called the ‘Extreme Defender’.

Bowler Motors in the UK have been in the business of building and racing off-road vehicles for nearly 40 years. Founded by Drew Bowler in 1985, Bowler has competed in numerous national, European and international off-road and hillclimb events, including the ‘big one’ - the Dakar Rally.

While Land Rover Defender conversions don’t encompass everything that Bowler does, it’s a vehicle they’ve become synonymous with. The brand’s close ties to Land Rover were formalised in 2012, leading to a one-make rally series using Bowlerconverted Defenders a couple of years later.

Drew Bowler passed away in 2016, but Bowler Motors has continued, with Jaguar Land Rover officially acquiring the business in 2019 and granting Bowler use of the ‘Defender’ name for their vehicles a year later. So far, those vehicles have included a special, road-biased Defender wagon codenamed ‘CSP 575’.

conversion for the Defender was unveiled earlier in 2022 and will be built in limited numbers each year by the UK company.

Using either customer-supplied Land Rover Defenders or vehicles sourced to customer request, the Extreme conversion is available across 90, 110 and 130 platforms of the late-model classic Defender and follows the ‘Fast Road’ Defender conversion that Bowler already offers.

EXTREME OUTDOORS

The most obvious element of the Extreme Defender is its stance, achieved via a 2-inch lift kit and the addition of big 35-inch BF Goodrich tyres on 16-inch beadlock steel wheels (although Maxxis tyres are fitted in the images presented here).

The lift is part of a bespoke front and rear suspension system taken from Bowler’s Fast Road Defender, while the oversized tyres see Bowler’s ‘Bulldog’ extended wheelarch kit added.

Below the signature Bowler sill guards, rockslider steps (not shown here) are part of the package and rollover protection is added in the form of a comprehensive external rollcage that includes a roof basket.

At the front end, the factory bumper is replaced with Bowler’s own unit that’s in the style of the sill guards and incorporates recovery points. There’s a Bowler rear bumper, too, styled and positioned to minimise impact on the Defender’s departure angle and also incorporating a step kit, allowing for easier access to the vehicle.

The factory-fitted lighting is replaced with “high performance” LED units front and rear, with Bowler’s own auxiliary DRLs added. More lighting that’s optionally available includes a bank of Lazer spotlights atop the rollcage and convenience/access lights for the rear, which in the case of the vehicle shown, illuminate the Defender 110 dual cab ute’s tub.

Finishing touches include a steering guard, stainless steel bolts, bonnet vents, new door handles and upgraded hinges all round, including tailgate hinges for Defender utes. The handles, vents and hinges are all billet aluminium.

In addition to fitting the comprehensive Extreme kit, Bowler can also repaint the Defender in any colour the customer wishes.

EXTREME INDOORS

Inside, the Extreme conversion is as much about luxury and performance as capability and practicality. After stripping the interior, Bowler apply soundproofing material, then full carpeting.

The factory seats are replaced with Recaro sports seats that have provision for multipoint harnesses. These are retrimmed in leather, the colour of which can be specified by the customer.

An Alcantara headlining is fitted, a Momo leather-wrapped steering wheel replaces the factory tiller and the gear levers are upgraded with chunky Bowler units.

EXTREME MECHANICALS

Engine upgrades under the Extreme package include the Fast Road conversion that improves horsepower to 130kW and torque to 450Nm on the 2.2-litre turbo-

diesel four-cylinder that’s common to latemodel Defenders.

That compares to 90kW and 360Nm maximums from this engine in factory spec, with Bowler stating the additional output is achieved through a modified ECU and addition of a race-style intercooler as part of a ‘Stage 2’ performance package.

No mention is made of the standard six-

speed manual transmission or dual-range four-wheel drive system for late-model classic Defenders that’ll be the base for the Extreme conversion, so it can be assumed these remain unchanged for the package.

Braking is upgraded from factory, though, with the Bowler ‘Big Brake’ package added that includes larger discs (334mm front and 297mm rear) and 4-piston calipers.

Factory front bumper is replaced with this lightweight unit that includes recovery hooks.

Sill guards are in the same style as the bumper.

Headlight surrounds are Bowler’s own design and include additional DRLs.

Extreme package includes 2-inch lift kit, upgraded suspension and 35-inch tyres on 16-inch beadlock wheels.

Door handles, hinges and some other trim parts are replaced with Bowler’s own units in billet aluminium.

Bowler says this upgrade has no impact on the Defender’s ABS, or the factory traction control system.

BUILT TO ORDER

The Bowler Extreme Defender conversion is available on a commission-only basis, with only a few build slots to be allocated each year, the UK company says.

Pricing hasn’t been revealed by Bowler, who state that age and condition of the

cost, along with things like individual customer requests.

That being said, previous Bowler vehicles have cost in the region of $300,000 in turnkey specification, so expect the Extreme Defender to be in the low six figure range in Australian dollar terms, too, even if the customer provides the donor vehicle.

SANDGROPER CARAVANNERS INC. The Sandgroper Caravan Club was formed in 1999 and caters for caravanners that enjoy travelling, exploring and good fun with other like-minded people. The Club organises monthly rallies, generally not more than 250 kms from Perth, however this could vary for long weekends or special events. Officially a rally starts on a Friday afternoon and finishes on Sunday morning, however many of our members like to arrive earlier and leave later, it's up to you. Every rally has organised activites which could include, visits to places of interest, picnics or scenic adventures of which none are compulsory. A typical evening starts with 5pm happy hour, followed by dinner and then may include games. – Accuracy of data – for many vehicles there are many combinations of trim, engine, specification…You name it. If we tried to list every possible combination, the guide would be too long, so we’ve just listed representative figures in each case, mostly split by engine type.

– Towing – remember that the figure quoted is the BRAKED tow weight for which you’ll need an electric brake controller.

A classic Suzuki LJ80 4x4, originally supplied to dual 500cc Motorcycle World Champion Barry Sheene in 1979, was recently acquired by Suzuki GB PLC for display in their corporate headquarters. Finished in Pastel Blue and customised with stripes and Sheene’s ‘7’ racing number, the compact Suzuki off-roader was used by Sheene and his family for several years.

It later came into the possession of a former Suzuki Marketing Director, who restored it to its original condition. This past November, it went to auction in the UK, where Suzuki GB PLC purchased it for the relatively bargain price of £24,750 (AU$43,635 approx.).

Hyundai has launched the ‘Santa Fe Hybrid’, which combines a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and six-speed automatic transmission with an electric motor, driving all four wheels.

The hybrid option will be limited to the Highlander and Elite model grades of the large SUV, with these grades introducing a new 19-inch wheel design for 2023. The Highlander grade also offers a 6-seat option, adding captain’s chairs to the second row.

The Santa Fe’s existing drivetrains of 3.5 petrol V6 with eight-speed auto (2WD) and a 2.2-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder with eight-speed DCT (AWD) remain.

Pricing for the Santa Fe Hybrid starts at $63,000 (+ ORCs).

The new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport have recently been awarded the maximum 5-star safety rating by ANCAP.

The Range Rover scored 86 per cent for Child Occupant Protection and 72 per cent for Vulnerable Road Users, while the Range Rover Sport achieved an 85 per cent rating for Adult Occupant Protection. Both SUVs achieved 84 per cent for Safety Assist.

Standard safety equipment for both models includes AEB, Rear Collision Monitor with Occupant Protection Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Driver Condition Response, Pre-emptive Suspension and a 3D surround-view camera that can also capture the view immediately in front of the bonnet.

Convenience features on both models include Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Steering Assist and voice control via Amazon Alexa.

As part of the lead up to the arrival of Chevrolet Racing in the Repco Supercars Championship this year, GM Specialty Vehicles have unveiled an ‘Off-Road Racer’ concept version of the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 full-size ute that will shortly be added to the Australian GMSV range.

Created in Australia, with input from GM Motorsports Division in the US, the concept features retuned suspension, off-road tyres, a tub-mounted fuel cell, additional lighting, underbody protection, a full roll cage and race seats, while the Silverado ZR2’s 6.2-litre V8 has been upgraded with a performance exhaust, performance air intake and heavy-duty driveshaft. While it seems ideal for something like the Finke Desert Race, GMSV have made no announcement regarding whether the concept will be more than just a showpiece.
