Remember the early days of online forums? Wasn’t it great. Find a niche forum you were interested in, sign up and then go and chat with like-minded people who shared the same weird and wonderful interest as you. Heaven! Sadly, soon after came the online troll. They weren’t quite so great. In fact, until we all learned the best way to deal with them, they could be pretty savage!

Since the demise of forums, though, we’ve noticed a massive decline in the amount of people hating online, especially in our ‘scene’. In fact, we’d almost forgotten that was even a thing… until recently. I’m not sure whether Covid is to blame (that’s quite a common excuse these days), if it’s the fact winter is looming and the nights are drawing in or whether people are just bored of social media in general. Whatever it is, it needs to stop... today! We’ve recently seen people hating on this month’s incredible cover car, implying it’s all show and no go. If only they’d sat and read the feature on p8 first. Then people have been personally targeting contributor, Jamie Orr - we can only assume out of pure jealousy. Honestly! From the outside looking, it may seem like Jamie is living the VW dream, but shouldn’t we be happy for him? And besides, I can assure you that when your hobby is also your job, it can be extremely challenging at times. To get a taste of what Jamie does best, head to p42 for our coverage of his unique L’oe Show experience. He’s a good egg, this one. Come on guys, we’re all in this together. Whatever happened to positive vibes only, hey?

Moving on… Elsewhere in the issue we’ve a bagged Stage 3 Mk5 GTI, an R32swapped more-door Mk1 Jetta and a beautifully simple Mk1 GTI, plus coverage from Udderly Euro, Dubs at the Gap, Water Days and Euros on the Capital. Enjoy the issue.

Let’s play a little word association game. We’ll tell you a word and you have to quickly say another that has some sort of connection to it. No, it doesn’t matter if you’re reading this on the bus and other commuters will shoot you funny looks. Ok, let’s start. Chewbacca… Tornado…Fender. If your word associated with the latter happened to be the R32 on these pages, then we’re here to help you look beyond those Berg Cup inspired protuberances to realize this MK4 is far more than meets the metal.

Ryan Maretsky, a 32-year-old clean room manufacturer hailing from the eastern end of Long Island, has owned the R32 you see here for a decade. “The first car I purchased

with the intent to build was a 2004 GTI,” says Ryan. “I knew what I wanted, and the general look it would take.” With six months invested, a friend of his father mentioned they were planning to sell their R32. “Knowing what the car was, I immediately called him back and told him I would buy it. I put the GTI up for sale right then, stripped it of all its work, and went to pick up the R.”

Ryan’s automotive history is somewhat short yet sweet, with his first set of wheels being a 1964 Mustang which was replaced with a more practical Toyota 4Runner for college duties. “My grandfather consistently drove off brands like Renault and Citroen when I was growing up,” Ryan tells us. “Plus, my father had a vehicle customization shop, so I’ve been into cars as long as I can remember, but have

always had a particular liking for Volkswagens.” We’re glad he does. Enter the R32.

We’re in an odd time right now where values of nearly everything are rising to levels that don’t make much sense. The term ‘survivor’ seems to have become synonymous with an instant premium on the bottom line, regardless of humble origins. Oh your grandmum has a taxi-spec 1.8 MK3 Golf with only 60k on it, but threadbare bolsters because she enjoyed Cornish pasties a bit too much? Yeah, that will be 10 grand, mate. You’re not going to find another like it. Sure. So while it may cause pain to some followers of the Cult of It’s Only Original Once, we are willing to bet most of our readership isn’t the type to wince at a hacked up halo. “To clarify, at no point do I regret anything I’ve done to or

WHYNOT?

When Ryan Maretsky confessed ‘Why not?’ was the motto behind his car, that explained quite a lot to us. Looking at the photos on these pages, we’re sure you’re probably getting that similar vibe, too…

with this car.” The man hath spoken. There isn’t enough space in this magazine to exhaustively recount the previous editions of Ryan’s R, but we’re going to briefly walk you down the winding path that leads to present day. By his own estimation, he’s completed nearly 95% of the work on his own. “I’ve had the car ten years now,” says Ryan, “and have changed it 7-8 times. I always enjoyed the car looking OEM+, but after taking it to X amount of events, I wanted something that didn’t follow many of the common Volkswagen paths.”

For those familiar with the R’s progression, please feel free to hit the Skip Intro button. He enjoyed the way it came from the factory for approximately one month before fitting air ride, ditching the Aristos, and canning

the back seat. Basic bolt-ons and minor aesthetic mods were periodically fitted over the course of the following few years. In 2014, the exterior lost the rear hatch handle, the emblems, bumper lights and other unnecessary body bits. Two years later, a set of BBS RS entered Ryan’s life that would change the R’s trajectory from mild to wild.

“In order to have the right style faces that fit with the R’s big brakes, with the correct disc size and PCD, I took a local set from a Subaru. They were the right wheels once rebuilt, but the offset put them sitting way outside the fenders. After test fitting the wheels to see that the faces were what I wanted, I got to thinking about a different path. Why make the wheels fit the car, when I could make the car fit the wheels?” And so it began.

Over the next two years, Ryan did enough personal R&D until he landed on the right style of overfenders and making them properly fit. He nonchalantly mentions menial things being addressed, such as some interior modifications and the air setup. But wasn’t until 2018 when the transformation to what you see here began.

“In summer of 2018 I decided to do some incredibly wide rears, the wing, and the shaved bay,” Ryan casually recalls. For many enthusiasts, one large project, be it bodywork or the like, is enough to separate the serial modifier from the Pep Boys accessory aisle crowd.

That shaved bay wasn’t as curious as it stands today. Sure, there are pieces that remain similar, such as the ruby red valve

January 2023 9

cover and beige-coated bits. But top and center, devoid of any intake manifold and commanding every ounce of your attention, sits a pair of turbos.

“The fun current trend is the mirror image twin turbos that you see on LS swaps and other V8s. The V8 is obviously more conducive to the mirror image design, being an exhaust manifold comes up on each side, but I decided if I was going to do this much work, I was certainly not going to hide it between the motor and the firewall. It would be on full display. It didn’t hurt that my motto for this entire car is ‘why not?’”

The rest of the bay is easily as impressive, with nothing escaping Ryan’s detailed presentation. Hard lines are used everywhere and the colour coordination would make the Power Rangers proud. “All [the lines were] made specifically for each application by hand,” says Ryan. “I cut, bent and flared every single line for the entire vehicle.” The strut towers were also smoothed over, the tops presenting

a very unusual lack of strut top mounts. “I have my fitment and wheel alignment finely tuned, so it’s usually not a worry to have it covered,” Ryan informs us. “I have the strut damping and adjustable camber under there, so if I need to adjust I have to drop the top plate down, make my basic adjustments and then refit it. I have camber adjust on the lower control arms as well so I can fine tune. I enjoy the smooth look more than I mind having to do extra work for an alignment.”

You could spend half a day inspecting the engine bay and still not see it all, like visiting a museum on a class trip. “It was the definition of 10 pounds of potatoes in a five pound sack,” jokes Ryan. “The amount of planning and meticulous placement of parts, not only to ensure nothing interfered, but to simultaneously keep the shaved bay look, was to me, a triumph in itself. I specifically need to thank Jamie and Adam from Fabwerkz for all their help with the turbo setup, tuning, and time spent troubleshooting with me.”

Peer through the bay and you’ll see the lower suspension pieces and brake components have also been powder coated the same Edgewood Beige. “Kris and Kacper at KK Finishing Co powder coated every single part on this car that wasn’t a painted piece. They literally coated several thousand items, parts, beauty washers, you name it.” Take a look under the TCR-inspired chopped rear bumper and you’ll see the same level of detail for the rear undercarriage as well. Not one stone was left unturned. This is the real deal. Working your way around the exterior, setting aside the flares and the wheels for future examination, you’ll find an otherwise standard looking R32 in that Ryan’s left the taillights, side skirts and door handles alone. The DTM-esque door mirrors are BRAND and the rear and side windows have been replaced with polycarbonate pieces featuring little sliders for drive through access. The elephant in the feature hanging off the hatch is more than just a talking piece. “I built linear

actuators onto the rear wing,” says Ryan, donning his fanciest engineer cap. “They’re connected to a brain unit which I programmed using a gyroscope and an accelerometer, so as the car speeds up or brakes, the wing moves to adjust for better downforce or braking assistance.” While it hasn’t seen track time yet, Lime Rock Park isn’t too far and he’s not afraid of using it.

And with anyone that’s been on track before, the road racing version of “break a leg” is usually to keep the shiny side up. Have you noticed the intricacies of Ryan’s roof? This man left no canvas blank on his way to artistic perfection.

“I’ve always enjoyed lowriders and hoppers,” admits Ryan. “A lot of those guys do intricate paint designs and I enjoy the way that breaks up the main colour on a car.” By taking advantage of the roof’s real estate, the sea of solid red is tamed without the need for added graphics, stripes or a wrap. “We used old school method of lace table cloth to do my roof,” continues Ryan. “The paisley design is left behind after you lay a table cloth or sheet out and ghost paint into the open areas. When you strip it back and gloss it, you’re left with the transverse design of whatever was on your cloth. I actually bought the tablecloth the first year I had the car, it just took me 10

years to get around to it.”

Back to those wheels. The D-lng Designs turbo fans add a bit of flare to the fronts, while the rears are the beneficiaries of 7” lips. SEVEN. But one simply doesn’t just bolt a fifteen inch wide wheel to the hub and call it a day. Prior to the added width, Ryan relied on Clinched overfenders to cast a shadow over the poking tire. And if you think bolt-on means just that, think again. “They fit terribly when I got them,” says Ryan. “They’re actually my third different set of Clinched overfenders. They have several styles in their lineup, as I’ve changed wheel widths and ideas, I’ve changed over from one model to the next. They need

to be trimmed cut widened, etc, but that’s not a big deal to me. I love the way they look.” Oh, and if Toyo made a tyre wider than 335mm for an 18” wheel, those hoops would find their way out back. Meaty.

There is one last thing to mention about the exterior, in case you haven’t been exposed to enough. The conventional floor jack was sent to the freecycle group and replaced with Nuke air jacks. That’s right, historic Le Mans technology has finally trickled down to the humble MK4 platform. “When [they] came out with their new style of air jack, which could run off my in-car air system, I knew this was the time. It was a significant amount of effort to plan them into the car, French them into the front floor, and set them to balance and actually lift the car. But to be able to pull a valve and have the car jump up makes it all worth it.” Talk about taking all the parking lot GTG points.

Open the driver’s door and you’re greeted by a fire extinguisher. It’s that doesn’t signal this guy means business, then immediately close the door and move on. There is a familiar shade of that Edgewood beige that covers the roll cage, the metal floor mats, and even the R32 pedal pads, something I’ve personally never seen before. The seats are another thing altogether.

“You want to know something?” Ryan queries us. “Of everything I’ve done on this car, all the things to love or hate on, all the radical modifications, the 'amazing details' or the 'ruining of such a pure car', the 'twin turbo comments', it's the 'where did you get

“Most of the things I did on this car were to draw attention”

that wing?', that's the number one question I'm asked! ‘How un/comfortable are those seats?’” Ryan tossed us an invite to test them out next time we’re in the same vicinity. “They’re Kirkey aluminum seats for dirt oval racing. After spending years at the track, I always had a love for these seats. They’re like a mix between a professional race seat and an all metal low bomber seat. And, in keeping with the fashion of this build, I’d never seen them in another car so…”

If you’re able to look beyond the bum holders, you’ll start to notice the anodized red highlights peeking out here and there. The washers, seat frames, shifter and e-brake handle, it all flows. This is not accidental. The HVAC system was deemed unnecessary so the vents were sealed. There are 3D printed R logos in the ones on top of the dash, and there is a multitude of gauges and buttons intentionally placed where the other vents once resided. Look down and the striking lack of carpeting will catch your glance. “The interior floor was completely shaved along with the driveline tunnel,” says Ryan.

Out back, two hefty NOS bottles are on display flanking the air tank. They’re plumbed in and fully functional, too, providing a respective 50 and 100 shot of the laughing gas when the button on the dash is prodded. It would be borderline offensive to use the car crash analogy to

describe Ryan’s R, but the more you stare, the harder it is to look away. It’s a project, that after so many reincarnations, is put together that well. “Most of the things I did on this car were to draw attention,” Ryan affirms, “to make them think about how I did it, why it was done that way, or just to make them say wow. I enjoyed building this car, hiding small details and important parts, just as much as I enjoy everyone who will really look, study and get into the build.”

The ultimate version was set to be completed in just under a year’s time. “I wanted to have it ready for the following 2020 season. Add exactly two years to that original estimate, plans change, life moves, things happen, but three years later, almost to the day, I finished the car to my standards around 2 a.m., packed up, drove to L’oe show in PA and reintroduced the car to the community for the final time.”

So will this truly be the way Ryan’s R lives out its days? And will it remain in his care or put on sale like yesterday’s milk? “The R will most likely stay with me for a long time,” muses Ryan. “It’s been such an extensive project that I am very invested in. I don’t see any need to move on the car, so it will just be used and enjoyed as is. This was the final change for this car and it’s everything I hoped it could be. I have a bunch of other projects to move onto. I’m looking forward to actually working on something else rather than this car again for the hundredth time!”

Why not, right? Because he can n

INTRODUCING

WESTERNMASS WATERWORKS CLOCKS

Covid was a pretty rough period for most of us, but there were some positives to come out of it, too. For old-skool VW fan, Nick Kramarczyk (whose own Mk2 Golf was featured back in PVW 4/00), having just finished building his wife’s Mk2 Golf, he began messing around with wood working to amuse himself during those long periods at home and then came up with the great idea of converting old Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 Golf tachos and speedometers into working clocks for your home. “I was really bored and had seen something similar to these on Instagram a while back and kind of wanted to take that idea to another level,” Nick told us.

“I’ve been making all sorts of things over the past couple years, but the clocks seem to be the most popular. I started by making a few to be sold at various Foundation Blue auctions, then just kept going. I even made one out of a coupe Quattro gauge face.”

We’ve not actually seen these clocks in the flesh, but if they’re as good as they look in the photos then they sound like a snip starting at just $120. Prices naturally can increase depending on the wood used and specification of the clocks you wish to use, but if you can’t quite stretch to the clocks, then Nick also offers a range of other cool stuff including these amazing gear knobs (below, right), which start at just $70.

JETTA GLI PERFORMANCE CONCEPT

Volkswagen of America recently revealed its Jetta GLI Performance concept at the recent SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Created by its Design Centre in California, the concept was built on a 2022 Jetta GLI Autobahn with six-speed manual, the GLI Performance concept features front and rear fenders that are 0.8 inches wider than stock, all with backside vents. The motorsportinspired flares are tied together at the profile through larger profile side skirts.  A custom front bumper boasts upsized grille intakes, while the rear bodywork sports updated grille inserts and a muscular lower valance that frames the car’s twin-exit sport exhaust. A custom hexagonthemed matte black vinyl wrap transitions to the car’s factory shade of Kings Red Metallic paint. RacingLine added its IS38 turbo-based performance package with an R600 Carbon Fibre Cold-Air Intake and Performance Intercooler deliver the necessary flow of cool air, while an oil management kit and oil cooler aid with thermal management of the motor’s oil.

To counter the 350 horsepower and 372 pound-feet of torque the car features a RacingLine Stage 3+ six-pot big brake kit with carbon-ceramic discs and TrackSport coilover suspension kit. Wrapping the concept is a set of forged GRZ 20” Rotiform wheels, with Aerodisc covers, plus pair of Recaro Pole Position ABE seats trimmed in a custom Texagon themed material.

HERITAGE Mk2 GOLF REAR PANEL

Is the back end of your Mk2 Golf letting the side down? Perhaps it’s sporting a few dents or has started to rust. Whilst we know original is best, sometimes you need to take the bull by the horns and fix the problem before it gets any worse, and that’s where these guys come in. Pressed in Europe, the panel extends to the top of the rear lights, takes in the badge plinth below and drops to include the lower valance too. It is suitable for big and small bumper cars but sadly isn’t suitable for Jetta models. Priced at £152.95 you can find them online at www. heritagepartscentre.com

WHAT'SNEW

EUROS ONTHE CAPITOL

Back in May last year (I know, we’re a bit late to the party with this one), Scott Sayers of Deutschwurx fame, out of Eldridge, Maryland, decided to throw a little GTG at local Capitol Raceway and Europe on the Capitol was born.

With over 180 cars attending the maiden event, it’s safe to say this event was just what the local area needed. And despite an over cast day, thankfully the rain held out till after all awards had been given out. Despite the ‘Euro’ branding, the event was predominantly open to all VW, Audi and Porsche vehicles which were parked in either and air-cooled or water-cooled area.

While the main sponsor was Unitronic,

plenty of other companies supported the show including Liquimoly, ECS Tuning, Animated Car Audio, Lindsay Volkswagen, Solowerks,  Braum, Parts Authority, Auto tint king, Hurricane racing tours, CTS turbo and Techtonics tuning, and All About the Bounce (All about the what? – Ed).

There was a great array of cars in display including a Golf Rallye, Polo Harlequin and a wicked Mk1 Rabbit off-roader. “We had 5ft and 3ft tall trophies for Best paint/wrap, Furthest Driven, Best Audi, Best water-cooled and Best air cooled, Scott told us. They also awarded top 25 plaques for top Water- and Air-cooled cars. “We had planned to have all car winners

complete a parade lap down the drag strip, but sadly it rained,” Scott said. Despite the late downpour, the event was a massive success which Deutschwurx hope to repeat in 2023.

“I’d like to thank Dennis Rice, Elam Morales, Jeff Custer, Megan Stickell, Jonathan Klipa , Don Miner, Tim Keys, Larry Wentzel,  Andrew Ridgeway of Quickshot Photography, and my children Cailin and Kenzie for judging the kids colouring contest and always encouraging me. Special thanks to our sponsors, friends and clients for the continued support of Deutschwurx. We will continue to have a bigger and better show every year.” What’s left to say? Enjoy the photos.

MADETO MEASURE

Blending classic performance styling with modern muscle, JP van der Horst’s Jetta is a home-brew hot rod with the details to match the best in the business.

As much a perk of its diminutive landmass as its long history of building, customising and racing almost anything with an engine, the UK is hard to beat if you’re looking for engineering expertise on your doorstep. It’s a talent pool deep enough that there’s no shame in cherry-picking world-class names to bring your project to life, but that also makes it doubly impressive when something homebrewed muscles in on the best in the business. Especially when, like JP van der Horst,

that expertise isn’t rooted in an automotive background, let alone sheltered by a garage.

“I’ve always liked retro cars, but the mechanical side came later,” he tells us. “Most of what I had was newer – I’d buy them, clean them up, get bored and swap them – then in 2016 this white Mk1 Clipper Cabriolet popped up. I had an MX-5 and a few hundred pounds of cash saved, and the guy was quite happy to do a deal on it, but I didn’t have a clue. I drove it around for 20 miles with no water in it, and my mate asked what I was doing. He had a Mk1 as well, he got me the tools, showed me

what to do, and it all went from there.”

In some ways it was a natural progression. JP was a car-obsessed kid but channelled the underlying engineering interest into other forms of transport. The Mk1 came up during a stint in Portsmouth as part of a nine-year career as a Navy aircraft engineer, while later projects have been bankrolled by his current job maintaining Great Western Railway rolling stock at a depot in Swansea. Having started out with a basic toolkit, axle stands and a fearless appetite for mechanical work, he’s become increasingly ambitious in the

26 Performance VW

meantime. The Cabrio eventually changed hands with a home-brew 20-valve turbo conversion, and his red lockdown resto-mod Mk2 16V made these pages last year.

“The 20-valve turbo swap was a bit daunting but, as my mate told me, it’s just nuts and bolts and there’s enough information out there to do anything you want,” he smiles. “I have a garage where I keep all my tools, and a fancier one on the other side that I had built for the Mk2 – which I said I’d never sell – but that’s just to keep the car dry. I built the Jetta on the drive, on axle stands, out the

front of the house. It’s just how I roll.”

Changing jobs had a hand in that process too. JP relocated to Aberdare in South Wales a couple of years ago, and the Jetta surfaced a couple of miles away from his house as an irresistible base for the next project. Originally a 1.3-litre C model, it had been treated to a recent DIY restoration including rolled arches, G60 steelies and a rebuilt 1.8-litre carb-fed engine. As logistics go, a two-mile convoy to drop it on his driveway and a return journey to take the previous owner home again is enviably straightforward – and JP already had

the next steps in mind.

“Everyone was doing 20-valve swaps and PDs were popping up too, but I couldn't find any Jettas with an R32 lump – there was a guy in Canada who had an R36 engine in his Coupe, but that was it,” he explains. “I’d helped my friend convert his Mk2 VR6 to an R32, and then bought it off him, and the principles would be the same. It’s a Mk1 chassis so it’s fairly straightforward – the difference is Jettas don’t come up very often.”

That R32-swapped Mk2 almost became part of the mix. Potentially a useful engine

January 2023 27

donor, it dawned on JP that there was a limited market for the rolling five-door GTI bodyshell that process would leave behind. Instead, he parted ways with it as a complete car, taking the time not only to find an alternative but to invest in headache-free motoring further down the line. The new engine was torn down for a fresh head gasket, timing chains and guides, given a coat of paint and assembled while it was on the stand to avoid access issues once it was in place. This had one major downside – the Mk1 isn’t a generous engine bay, and it took five hours to manoeuvre that bulky powertrain into its new home.

“I’m very much into the OEM plus look – I like the idea of things looking like they’re supposed to be there, even though they’re not,” says JP, propping the bonnet open to talk us through the finished conversion. “When I was looking for an engine, it had to be from a Mk4 Golf. It sounds stupid, but it’s because you can fit an engine cover to them and you can’t on a Mk5. I wanted that look, I’d seen R32 swaps without the engine cover and it doesn’t look right.”

That’s not a criticism you can level at this one. The 3.2-litre VR6 puts power to the front wheels through a cable-operated Corrado

VR6 02A gearbox, but with the linkage from a Mk4-spec 02J for tighter, more modern-feeling shifts. It’s treading a fine line between factory and custom, retaining the Mk1 washer bottle and a visible coolant tank but with hand-coiled brake lines and a custom air intake running down to the Mk2 battery box behind the headlight. Any de-cluttering subtle, the slimline radiator and dual-fan setup is tucked away under the slam panel, and the top coolant hose is hidden underneath a Corrado radiator cover tray. It’s a tight fit, but you could almost believe it left Wolfsburg this way.

The Jetta took to that extra cubic capacity

28 Performance VW

surprisingly well, firing up with some fresh dino-juice to the hum of newly-upgraded fuel pumps and a steady rumble from the custom Trackslag exhaust system. Minor hesitation on early drives was traced back to a bad earth on the alternator bracket, and JP has the kit to diagnose other problems without even opening the bonnet. The ECU is mounted in the glovebox with the OBD port for downloading fault codes –something that’s helped track down an issue with the air temperature sensor – but it also means he can monitor real-time engine revs, temperatures and other information using a

Bluetooth dongle and smartphone app. It’s a useful feature for a car which still only has base-spec instruments.

Despite putting in the test miles without any visual upgrades, base-spec bodywork was never on the cards and the GTI-inspired visual upgrades are a subtle giveaway that this one is worth a second glance. The BBS bootlid spoiler was yet another lucky find – desirable enough to risk, because it would easy to re-sell if it didn’t work – but it’s the perfect finishing touches for a car that otherwise looks like the sports saloon Wolfsburg never offered. A blend of GTI waistline trim and side stripes, complete with the Golf’s plastic arch extensions.

This was no easy job, he says: “The

30 Performance VW

arches had already been rolled, so the kit fitted the front wings but the rears were trickier – it doesn’t help that the car has had a bit of welding. I kept offering them up and making small cuts everywhere until I was happy with how they looked. They’re riveted on so they’re not going anywhere, and I think they really look the part. Importantly, everything looks like it’s meant to be there.”

There are subtle updates throughout the build, including deleting all traces of amber lighting and commissioning the insanely talented Renewart to make a set of periodstyle R32 badges. With over twice the power of the most powerful variants on the Mk1 chassis, JP retrofitted a brake bar to add the Mk2 Golf 9-inch servo and T4 master cylinder,

then stepped up to G60-spec discs at the front – there’s no weight at the back to require further upgrades. That hardware is all tucked away behind diamond cut B-STAR RA-1680 wheels, stretching a classic GTI design to 16x8mm and filling the rear arches with a 10mm staggered offset. It’s purposeful, but doesn’t shout about the near-250bhp performance underneath.

Some of the interior upgrades predate the car. The Mk3 Golf Recaros were lifted from another project and had already been welded onto the narrower rails which would allow them to slot into the Mk1 floorpan.

Then, to match the ‘spittoon’ steering wheel and custom winders and gearknob, the front and rear seats were then bare and retrimmed

in matching Series 2 GTI fabric at Fine Line Upholstery in Ystrad Mynach. It’s one of a handful of jobs that couldn’t be tackled on a driveway, but that wrinkle-free, factory-quality trimming job was worth every penny. It’s the bit you the see the most, right?

“The interior is my favourite part of the car,” JP tells us. “It was a toss-up between the red and silver stripe GTI material, and originally I thought maybe the red would be too much. So I went with the silver then changed my mind at the last minute, because something was telling me they’d look good. I’m really glad I did.”

Every detail here is sympathetically executed. The 1980s audio gear was inspired by a car he’d seen at a show, and it’s on the

January 2023 31

radar for some additional upgrades in typical JP style. Having found the speakers as new old stock for a bargain £45, the matching head unit appeared on Facebook Marketplace for another hardly budget-stretching £25. Plans for next year include modern speaker internals and a hidden Bluetooth receiver up front but, with some raw Wookie howls to enjoy in the meantime, there’s no great rush.

“It’s been a really simple build and I’m kind of surprised with how reliable it’s been. The only dodgy moment I’ve had was on the way back from Edition38, where it bucketed it down on the Penderyn to Brecon road, the fuse box got soaked and I lost my wipers and indicators. Otherwise, it’s just problems with the Mk4 sump being such a beast – and that’s not really mechanical. I have a 3mm thick steel sump from Eurowise which has taken a battering, but it does the job.”

And it does that job regularly, too. Weather permitting, the Jetta gets pulled out of the garage for at least one 100-mile commuting round trip, and it’s racked up thousands of miles picking up awards at shows across the UK since the bulk of the work was finished. With Brecon putting rolling hills and winding roads on the doorstep, it’s hardly surprising he’s making good use of it – who wouldn’t?

“It would be fun to supercharge the Jetta because I know I could tuck it all away neatly, but that’s a lot of money,” smiles JP. “I’ve enjoyed the build

and I love how it drives - it’s nose heavy and not really a car for haring around country bends, like a 205 GTI or a Golf 16V, but it’s amazing on the straight and you can’t beat that sound.

“However, I think I enjoy the build process more than ownership, and there’s always going to be something out there that I want to try. So who knows. It’s not for sale, but my mates would probably say I’d sell it if the money was right…”

In the meantime, there’s plenty to keep

him occupied. With hardly any mechanical headaches in the way of other projects, the Jetta has left space in the diary for a Mk4 R32 and a Mk1 tin-top that’s now part way through an increasingly intensive PD diesel swap. And yes, they’re all being executed in typical JP style; up on axle stands and exposed to whatever the Welsh climate throws at him. After all, if you’re looking for engineering expertise right on your doorstep, then is there anywhere better than, well, right on your actual doorstep? ■

GO WITH

COMPLETED IT, MATE

It’s always good to have a rough plan in place when you’re starting out with a project, and building a breathtaking modified vehicle is certainly no exception to this rule. You know what they say: by failing to prepare, you’re ultimately preparing to fail.

Of course, we’ve seen countless builds come together on the fly over the years, but there’s something about cars that have been

developed to closely follow their owners’ rigid and detailed briefs from day one that gives them a complete and well-thought-out look that’s hard to beat.

One man that’s followed this systematic approach with his latest whip is Ireland-based Jack Fanning here, whose stunning Mk5 GTI is packed with killer touches that you just couldn’t execute without a whole heap of prior planning taking place.

“I’ve always wanted a grey Golf with a red interior,” Jack tells us with conviction. “It didn’t stop me from getting side-tracked along the way, though…”

Although the pipe dream of the car you see before you had floated around the back of his mind for some time, Jack’s first properly customised machine came in the form of a diesel Mk6 a few years ago.

Despite its impressive spec that included

34 Performance VW
Dig beneath the clean lines of Jack Fanning’s Mk5 GTI and you’ll find a show-and-go car more thoroughly put together than you might first expect… Words: Sam Preston Photos: Ross Delaney

a full blackberry-colour body respray and re-trimmed interior complete with Audi wingbacks, there was still an itch that Jack just couldn’t scratch.

“I was actually getting that car shot by Ross Delaney after a Fitted UK show,” Jack recalls. “Ross had a Mk5 GTI at the time and let me have a spin in it while he was shooting my car. The noise and performance were both next-level and I knew one of these cars would

make a great base for my dream project. I needed one!”

The Mk5 from that fabled test drive happened to be a DSG model, with Jack initially starting his search for one of these semi auto-equipped hot hatches. Spotting this very example with its classy United Grey body, however, was enough to persuade him over to the three-pedal side.

“I initially wasn’t interested because of the

gearbox, but the colour grew on me and I knew it would be the perfect starting point to build up to the spec I had in mind,” Jack explains.

Although a lot of the goodies he’d added to his Mk6 would have bolted straight onto his newly acquired TFSI-powered pocket rocket, it’s a testament to Jack’s strict vision that only the air suspension system and front wingback seats made their way over to this new ride.

Talking of the seats, they may have been

January 2023 35

shown off in his previous car, but Jack wasted no time in giving them, and the rest of the Mk5’s interior, the mother of all overhauls with the help of pal Baron Bedi – the first major step in the development of this build.

“Within a few months, the interior was red,” Jack laughs, touching on the sumptuously finished Bentley Hotspur leather and Alcantara

that’s been applied to almost every visible surface of the car’s innards. This deep red colour works incredibly well against the cool exterior, especially on the wingback seats, giving off the effortlessly tasteful OEM+ vibes that you’ll be able to spot on almost all other aspects of the Golf as we work our way through them.

The interior is complemented with a matching boot build that Jack proudly whipped up himself, showing off the Air Lift Performance suspension system in all its glory (which Jack proudly installed himself, along with most other upgrades you see on the car). You’re probably not surprised to hear that Jack had equally as exciting plans for the car’s exterior, too. A self-confessed perfectionist, the Golf was promptly sent in for some panels to be resprayed in their original hue – a job which escalated to the extent that most of the

January 2023 37

car received new paint bar the roof.

“I’ve always had a slight addiction with carbon fibre,” Jack grins, hinting at all the panels that are now shod in (fully genuine) swathes of the stuff, including the front grille and splitter, as well as several parts inside –subtly breaking up the smooth grey lines in just the right way.

Continuing his theme of adding parts from other VAG-group cars that we mentioned earlier, Jack next grafted on a significantly larger braking system to all four corners of the GTI, including iconic Audi 8-pot calipers

and wavy discs up front, which certainly looked the part under the OZ Racing wheels he was rocking at the time.

These weren’t just for show, though, with the next aspect of the build given some attention being the TFSI lump under the bonnet. You see, this isn’t just an all-show-andno-go build, far from it, in fact. Now sporting 370bhp thanks to a larger K04 turbo and stage

“I wanted to keep it reliable and manageable, and this state of tune seems spot-on for the job,” a satisfied Jack tells us. “Don’t get me wrong, it can still catch you out in the rain, though…”

But it’s the most recent upgrade to Jack’s

38 Performance VW
3 tune, Jack often enjoys exploiting the Golf’s new-found grunt with five switchable maps meaning he’s prepared for any situation.

Mk5 that he admits is the one he thinks ties his whole vision together – the Rotiform HUR split rims that now take pride of place under the curvy arches.

“If I get something into my head, I have to get it,” Jack admits, with this particular model of Rotiform’s rolling royalty being stuck at the forefront of his mind for some time. “I was tipped-off that there might be a set for sale in Scotland, and eventually managed to persuade the owner to sell them to me. What followed was a 33-hour round trip to pick them up!”

Dropping his shabby but perfectly-spec’d rims off near Belfast for a refurb on the way home, Jack is over the moon with the results now – the slinky spokes glistening in a bodymatched hue, as well as some incredibly

impressive finishing touches such as gold hardware and even red Rotiform logos to match the car’s interior.

With nine inches of girth all-round, however, getting them to sit pretty under each arch involved some SRS Tec wide wings being added up front, and a whole load of camber being dialled in out back. The results really do speak for themselves though, with the GTI being taken to the next level by this inspired choice of rolling stock. Jack eventually managed to get his pride and joy to a state that matched his initial vision just as Covid reared its ugly head,

meaning he’s not had much of a chance to show it off up until now. That’s all due to change in 2023, however, with plenty of trips over to both English and Scottish shows planned throughout the season.

Although it’s recently been retired from daily driving duties, it’s great to see Jack still using his hot hatch as intended. There might even be some track days on the cards in the nottoo-distant future, too, highlighting just what a great all-rounder he’s built for himself here. Just shows what you can achieve when you put your mind to it… n

L’OE SHOW2023

For 2023, we heard Jamie is looking to expand the L'oe Show downtown presence and offer a reverse USA to Wöthersee program to those in Europe who want to bring their vehicles abroad to the United States. Pottstown is close to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, within driving distance from New York City and only 4300 km from Lake Worth, Austria. L'oe Show has a great upward trajectory and is an event to add to the VAG show bucket list. Stay tuned to @ loeshowofficial for more information about next year's show.

The L'oe Show was the breakout US VAG car show event of 2021. Jamie Orr, after years of describing an ideal show/ venue, finally put dreams into action and filled the struggling Coventry Mall in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and built the show the likes the scene was hoping for, the only catch the mall was redeveloping, and L'oe could not be welcomed back to continued success. So, what to do? Find another mall in the region? Take the concept on the road? Or continue to support the community that Orchid Euro had grown up in?

Orr doubled down on Pottstown, took the concept to its heart, worked with countless city and regional officials, local businesses, clubs, tastemakers, and local celebrities, and convinced the community that L'oe

was worth keeping in the region. L'oe Show would now be held downtown on the Sunday of Labor Day 2022, spread over eight city blocks, closed off to traffic, with eight unique pop-up stores, 22 outdoor vendors, and a 40-foot flag hefted by the political might of the regional state representative eight stories above the main road High Street.

L'oe spanned a four-day schedule with numerous activities, meetups, and functions. Sly Fox Brewing kicked off the weekend with a meetup at their facility. Nineteen66 hosted a breakfast with a drive out to the famous hill climb Reading Pagoda; Rotiform hosted a get-together behind a local nightclub establishment, and a lunch meet was held at the Red Horse Motoring club.

Volkswagen of America chose L'oe Show to unveil the 20th Anniversary Golf R Special Edition for the North American market. Megan Closset, product manager Golf GTI, Golf R, and Arteon, and Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President Product Marketing – both of whom

Continuing from the fantastic store buildouts from the mall in 2021, several sponsors upped the ante and crafted unique pop-ups from the various available properties in downtown Pottstown. FCP Euro chose a former audio-visual store, Leen Customs,

a previous jewelry store. At the same time, SoloWerks redecorated an old paint store. Black Forest Industries also took over a vacant storefront. At the same time, Rotiform had the largest pop-up in an old wine and spirits store. Integrated Engineering and Nineteen66 took over active beer gardens. The main show on Sunday was capped at 400 registered vehicles. The featured model of the show was the Golf R32 / Golf R generations, of which 60 examples were present to celebrate the launch of the 20th Anniversary edition. Pottstown's High Street is the town's main artery, which is 80 feet wide and spans about five lanes, which was laden with show cars, vendor vehicles, and rarely-seen cars from Jamie Orr's collection. There was much to see and appreciate along the eight blocks, and pop into and visit the 30-some sponsors with locations along the route.

A stage was erected in the middle of the event where Orr and other VW personalities talked about vehicles on display; items were auctioned off, such as rare GRC Beetle parts, to benefit the Breast Cancer Society of Pennsylvania. Additionally, a school bus was donated by the Levy School Bus company that will be going to Ukraine to provide children with needed transportation in that conflict zone n

IIf we had a pound for every time someone asked us how to get into the mag, we would be laughing all the way to the bank. Sadly we don’t but on a happier note, nothing raises the spirits more than a Goldilocks spec Mk1 (you know, “This Golf is just right” said Goldilocks excitedly). A Mars Red GTI

is a strong, iconic starting place for a build but this feature shows how, sometimes, it’s about knowing when to stop rather than pushing the boundaries.

Derbyshire-based William Hague (no, not that one, this guy is only 27) is more used to modern metal with a day job as a car sales executive. In his personal life, he is a

VAG man through and through, starting his driving career in a Polo 6N2. The plucky first car was upgraded with a Mk5 Golf TDI. It was with this car that the modifying bug really took hold: “It was an SE model so as standard it had the boring bumpers, seats, and pretty much everything else. The mods started with me fitting coilovers and I

MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION

Here at PVW Towers, we are frequently asked what it takes to make a feature car. There are no hard and fast rules to this. This Gorgeous Mk1 GTI with a select few period mods is proof that sometimes less is more… Words:

gradually developed it with GTI headlights, R32 rear, Mk6 GTD tartan seats, Mk7 steering wheel and AccuAir suspension. I had numerous wheels on it including genuine Helios alloys and BBS RS2 super concaves.”

Various other VWs have passed through William’s hands including a 9N Polo Vortex and both a Mk6 and Mk7 Golf GTD. An Audi

A4 2.0 TFSI now takes care of daily duties.

William started to get the retro car itch when he saw his best friend frequently swapping and working on cars. Various VWs came and went from his mate’s lockup including ‘breadvan’ Polos and Mk2 Golfs.

William's cousin owns a Mk2 GTI and another pal had started a Mk1 project that caught

his eye. “I always really loved old angular hot hatches and a red Mk1 GTI was a bit of a grail car for me. I originally found this Mk1 whilst looking on Car and Classic one evening. It was just what I wanted. I didn’t want to waste time selling my Mk5 so I asked the owner if they fancied a swap. Thankfully they were looking for a newer iteration so we

did a deal. I was straight down to Surrey for the exchange.”

William’s plan for the car was always to keep it simple. The car originally came on steel wheels but after a year these were changed for Polo 6N2 GTI BBS wheels for a sportier feel. When a set of the coveted 15” Pirelli P Slots came up for sale locally though, they were duly snapped up. “I had heard they were quite rare and I always liked the OEM+ look. I bought the wheels and managed to find some centre caps which were an eBay bargain. I have kept the wheels since and I don’t think I will ever sell them. I have bought a set of BBS RMs for the show look but most of the time I leave it on the P slots as it drives much better and I love the look of it”.

The car came on old coilovers of unknown origin which were hard and seized. The decision was made over lockdown to upgrade to a set of MTS Technik/Eibach coilovers. These reportedly represent a sweet spot for

a combination of value for money, comfort, adjustability and improved handling. In keeping with the ethos of the build, the stance is enhanced, purposeful and usable.

Despite part of the charm of this car being its simplicity, the build and journey to making it a reliable classic have been anything but straightforward. When the Mk1 was picked up, it was impressively solid but oil consumption was an issue. It was hoped that the comparatively easy task of fitting new valve stem oil seals would save the day. An inspection revealed that it needed a full rebuild. The bottom end was stripped and cleaned and fitted with Wossner pistons, new piston rings, lightened crank and new rods. The head was machined, new valves fitted and a Kent KS2 cam and vernier pulley increases the urgency of the already peppy eight-valve powerplant. All new seals and gaskets were fitted to ensure another 40 years of reliability. “It took a couple of years to make it right. After issues with

ignition coils and timing, it is finally running amazingly thanks to the help of my dad and my mates”. A custom stainless exhaust is a nice visual upgrade and enhances that GTI engine note without being obnoxious.

The car came with retrofitted small chrome bumpers but these were at odds with the period look that William was aiming for. Tired-looking original plastic bumpers were

included in a spares package that came with the Mk1. These were refreshed and restored by a local specialist and fitted up. William has an eye for a bargain that puts David Dickinson to shame and the BBS front bib spoiler was another eBay triumph. Ordinarily, this is a sought-after period enhancement that is sprayed body colour. Initially, the part was duly painted in Mars Red and fitted.

The appearance wasn’t quite in keeping with the subtle package though. “I thought it was a little too much so I taped around an indentation and Plasti Dipped the lower end black. It changed the look massively and blends much more naturally into the black plastic arches, helping the car flow better in my opinion.” New Hella front lights further uplift the fresh front end. William also

a Hella rear spoiler and heckblende which are rare cool parts in their own right but he seems to have made the right call for this particular styling exercise in leaving them off.

William has exercised similar restraint with the interior. He has a Wolfsburg and two BBS steering wheels in his impressive parts stash but has opted to leave the iconic quad dimpled 1983 item in place. Optional VDO gauges allow him to keep an eye on the freshly built engine whilst the deckchair striped pews do their period thing. “The interior is pretty much standard. The car is used and the interior looks used. It isn’t perfect and I wouldn’t want it that way. I like

that it's honest and I don’t mind jumping in and out of it without being too careful.”

The build has taken four years to perfect and now William is keen to enjoy the fruits of his labour. William recalled with a smile that the car’s initial show was Fitted UK three years ago where it was belching oil and only selecting three gears. He cannot wait to put some miles on what is now a fully sorted example. With prices of Mk1s seriously on the up and the market demanding originality, could we be seeing more stock-looking cars with simple reversible mods becoming more commonplace? If they look as good as this, maybe that’s no bad thing n

"

Dude, remember at Dub Dash when…,” Pat says. “Dude, nobody remembers what happened at Dub Dash,” Brad recalls, sarcastically, as everyone busts out laughing. Dub Dash was a huge party disguised as a car show back in the day.

“Need another?,” Brad asks, while reaching in the cooler for the perfect local brew worthy of their 20-year friendship built over moments like this. Pat holds the beer can up in the hotel parking lot lights, examining the label like a fine champagne and nods with approval.

Like car scene detectives we ask whatever happened to “that guy” or “that one Mk2 everyone had”. It’s funny, Volkswagens don’t die, they just become so & so’s old car. As the night creeps up on us like we weren’t watching our circle dwindles as some head in for the night. This is the sacred part of the night at any car show, when you know you should go to bed, but you want to get every minute in with friends. The show doesn’t start until 2:00pm the next day, so we all take full advantage and decide to stay for just one more… a few more times.

Wisconsin is peppered with dairy farms,

famous breweries and billboards for “the best” cheese curds in town, hence the name, Udderly Euro. The show takes place in Neenah, a tiny town between Chicago and Minneapolis surrounded by vast lakes. Seagulls and sailboats give an east coast vibe, but the friendly locals remind you that you’re in the Midwest.

The usual Birkenstocks and electric cars that slap the pavement are replaced by a rhapsody of colours, rumble of exhausts and filthy gorgeous patina as show goers flood the downtown streets. It’s showtime.

The show site is bordered by docks, the host hotel and historic buildings now occupied by breweries, restaurants and shops. The locals seem to stop and stare as we orchestrate hundreds of attendees. Air cooled, water cooled, who cares; just bring it! Every spot fills then it’s make-yourown spot parking only. Watching show goers wipe every single drop of water from their shiny 3-piece wheels, reuniting with friends and feeling the show come to life is my favourite part of the day. Title sponsors ECS Tuning, Fitment Industries, VL Performance and Eurotrash Apparel set up and prepare for the crowd. Traces of race gas, musty interiors from the vintage crowd and the smell of authentic street tacos fill the perfect 75-degree air, it’s a great day for a car show.

“Lifted” is the new trend we’ve been seeing recently. In the past, anything but framescraping low would have been blasphemous.

Volvos, Atlas’s and surprisingly MK4s are some of the more common lifted vehicles at our shows. Patrick Thurston’s MK4 R32 is the perfect example. His inspiration came from the Mk2 Golf Country. The custom lift allows the R to utilise its full suspension travel, it’s also fitted with DOM bumpers, skid plates and tire carrier and sporting some pretty serious mud tires. The best part is he actually takes it off-road!

Jon Shelton’s diesel Porsche Cayenne is also a lifted favourite. Jon owns Drivers’ Gallery, a shop dedicated to creating and cultivating the art of vehicles. His Cayenne sits on the Eurowise 2” lift kit and is wrapped in Inozetek Chalk Grey. The Driver’s Gallery booth also showcased their technician’s (Alex Krieter) “RSFaux” B5 avant on custom 3-piece Rotiforms.

“Dude! Is that Andy’s old Corrado!?” I hear someone say as I see the British Racing

Green Corrado pull into a killer spot.

“No, man, that’s Andy! I haven’t seen him in forever” I hear the other guy say as they walk over to see the R32 powered Corrado that was a Midwest staple in the show scene. Andy Faulkner has owned the car for 15 years and built it from the ground up. This isn’t one of those builds that stays the same forever, it’s actually been under the knife for a few years now. The transmission, valve cover, timing covers (pretty much everything under the hood) and BBS RSs are copper and nickel plated. This one is a show-stopper.

Other crowd favourites would be Jesus Mondragon’s 3.6 24v Vr6 white MK3 GTI. Fully shaved, custom fenders, euro bumpers, sitting on BBS RSs of course, it’s just an amazing car. Balta Birruete is another standout with his white MK1 Jetta coupe with 3-piece P Slots with custom fans, drool

worthy. He also won the “Best Wheels” award.

Cars begin to slowly trickle into the grassy winners’ circle for awards. Edgar Carmona’s red RHD Mk3, Alex Martinez’s bagged Ferrari F430, Matthew Jensen’s e36 BMW M3 in Daytona Violet and some air cooled VWs are some of the winners. We always say, your car doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be cool. Best in Show went to a silver Porsche 356 Speedster.

Craig Daugherty from ECS Tuning and I handed out some “superlative” awards this year, as well. Being Father’s Day weekend, we gave out “Best Dad” (Mike Krahenbuhl), “Enthusiast Built” (Kyle Johnson), and the “Community Award” which went to Jon Shelton for his efforts in bringing the community together. We wrap up with raffles from Unitronic, ECS Tuning, Vyper Chairs and other sponsors. Fitment Industries even gave away

As the show concludes, cars and attendees simply relocate across the street to the hotel parking lot to pick up where they left off. It’s almost impossible to describe why this show is so special, like your favourite local coffee shop that you almost don’t want to tell anyone about. Groups flow in and out and we make our way over to the group of “old schoolers” to make one more playful jab at so & so for still not finishing his car. They’re all talking about the time “that dude’s tent caught fire at Dub Dash”, I guess some people do remember what happened at Dub Dash haha. And just like that, those memories come back to life. GAPYEAH!

Flintstone, Maryland – In 1965, American folk rock band the Byrds released their version of “Turn! Turn! Turn!” in which there’s a purposeful, lyrical lament about seasonality and time marching on. Many car aficionados see the same inevitability through the show season, mornings get colder, the sun’s shadows get longer and longer. But before thoughts turn to the inevitable winter punch lists, tear downs, parts orders and winterizing, there’s one last show circled on the calendar – the perfect bookend to the season – Dubs at the Gap.

The show is the proverbial autumn – an opportunity to reflect and be thankful for the year’s bounty as one last flash of splendour allows participants to indulge in what they love. It’s a relaxed atmosphere, an opportunity for enthusiasts to take a breath after all the shows of summer.

Yet, it still retains the very best elements of the popular season opener and sister show, Dubs at the Lake, encouraging attendees to choose their own weekend adventure nestled in the rural, picturesque hills of Western Maryland and the backdrop of Rocky Gap State Park.

That’s the hook to these shows – a full slate of events all weekend long in destination locations. Attendees can tailor the slate exactly to what they want, and generous windows between events ensure folks have plenty of time to catch up with friends and strike out on their own adventures.

Dubs at the Gap was made up of five total events this year -- a cruise to Locust Post Brewery sponsored by Open Air Imports on Friday evening; a Dubs and Donuts cars-andcoffee style event on Saturday morning; an over-landing excursion presented by B2BFab midday Saturday; Cruising the Gap, a scenic drive around the rolling hills of the area that ended with more food and beverages Saturday evening at 1812 Brewing; and the show itself on Sunday.

The Friday evening event was relaxed, the sun lazily faded down the horizon casting a cinematic scene with a live local band to complement the Volkswagens and Audis that circled the grounds.

Before unwinding with the music, brews and on-site food, participants met about 20 minutes away for a cruise to the venue along a historic national road that went past

On Saturday morning, attendees gathered at the show field for the Dubs and Donuts event through heavy fog that was starting to burn off. A note about the venue itself, festivities were held at the Rocky Gap State Park amphitheater – a multi-tiered grass area flanked by a lake and an elevated stage served as a central focal point. It was more than a humble parking lot, and when the tiers were filled with vendors and show cars, it was quite the site to see!

Fresh faces entered the venue, and it was a true opportunity to start to understand the diversity of cars, from Volkswagen-based overlanders to the latest and greatest in the Audi RS6 Avant, the lot was filling out quite nicely.

From there, two different options for cruising unfolded – those with a spirit of adventure, off-road tires and increased ride height set out immediately for the overlanding adventure led by B2BFab and some of their shop cars. The group set out for the Green Ridge State Forest to spend about three hours through a scenic off-pavement drive

through some rougher terrain and small river crossings. The adventure lasted about four hours and after it was over, they reunited with the rest of the group at 1812 Brewery later in the evening.

Those with more traditional cars hit Cruising the Gap -- a 24-mile circuit cruise that plunges down twisty hills, shoots across harvest-ready farmlands and around a couple area lakes, much to the awe of local fishermen. More than 175 cars joined in, once again emphasizing a diverse offering. A sample lineup included everything from air cooled Volkswagens through brand new Mk8 Golf Rs-- both looking equally at home and photogenic on the paved back roads with leaves scattering about as they drive by.

Cruising the Gap ended at 1812 Brewery with in-house brews and food trucks available for hungry enthusiasts. At 1812, it’s an inclusive, family-run venue. Hops grown on the farm provide the flavour for the beers, and the ample outdoor seating venue is dotted with monolithic grain silos and barns. It’s one of the more picturesque places in Western Maryland, especially when Volkswagens, Porsches and Audis fill the lots and a Grateful Dead cover band starts up to enhance the friendly atmosphere.

The Dubs attendees had the entire upper pavilion to gather, eat, drink and catch up

before the show. Friends and families gathered as the sun set and night slowly crept in as people unwound before the show the next day.

Sunday was show day. Roll in opened early to avoid excessive queuing and allowed the early birds to get in and set up to take on the sunny and uncharacteristically warm day – perhaps an homage to the memories of summer. More than 354 participants registered, and all show proceeds go to a local animal shelter.

As lots filled up, and groups of people milled

around, the vibe was very laid back – a perfect complement to the Dubs at the Lake show, and the appropriate amount of energy after a long season. The venue saw little picturesque pockets of cars all around the hills.

More than anything though, the genuine connection between people and the collective behaviour is refreshing. It transcends social media, and those in attendance embrace everything good that we’ve all come to love about the Volkswagen scene.

Sponsors of the show included FCP Euro,

Lindsay Volkswagen, ECS Tuning, Unitronic, UroTuning, New German Performance, AWE, Redline Motorworks, LiquiMoly, Country Style Mobile, Hengst Filtration, Rowe Motor Oil, Black Fly Industries, Open Air Imports and Steel City Society.

All in all, the show series continues to sustain and grow the community in the Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia area. Next up is Dubs at the Lake in May 2023 – make plans to join the high-energy season opener! n

REWIND

1YEAR AGO

JANUARY

2022

Wow, what an issue. A Super Bug inspired by the car in Gran Turismo and a Tesla-swapped Mk2 GTI sleeper. If this is the future of car modding then I don’t think we need to worry. Inside, we featured a Stage 2 bagged Audi S3 and Jamie Orr’s Atlas GT concept Enthusiast Build. We also looked at contenders for our Car of the Year competition, checked out HP Tuner’s Mk7 R’s body mods and brought you coverage from L’oe Show and Dubs at the Gap across the water.

JANUARY

2018

How can it be five years since David Lee’s RS3-powered 640bhp Golf R took cover, followed closely by Karl Ellis’s 755bhp all-wheel-drive Mk2 Golf. Carrying on the performance tip we had Darkside’s 437bhp Ibiza TDI, plus a company profile on the Barnsley-based tuner. PVW regular, Stuart Shellard was next up with his Ocean blue Mk1, plus Peter Krenmayr’s 800bhp B5 RS4 and finally Patrice Zend’s bagged Mk4 R32. We also looked at ST Suspension’s uprated chassis options for the Mk7 Golf platform. Finally, we had coverage from Westside’s tenth anniversary show, Tatton Park and the Dub Fiction Spain event.

JANUARY 2013

It’s a decade since Jay Mac’s revised Mk1 G60 stole cover, while inside we featured a Dutch OEM+ Golf Rallye, smooth German Mk6 on static suspension, Foose-inspired New Beetle, 500bhp MTM Clubsport Audi A1 and asked which was your Car of the Year 2012. In terms of event coverage we had reports from H20 International, Cult Classic, Modified Nationals, Euro Hangar, Players Show and Meguiar’s BBQ.

JANUARY

2003

Another bonkers car from 20 years ago in this tripleturbo Mk3 VR6 Caddy from Canada. Inside, Franco Parisi returned with his reworked Mk3 TDI and we also featured a Mk2 1.8T from Essex, wide-body New Beetle, a pair of Mk4 Polos built by two brothers, plus Mick Clements made-over his Mk4 1.8T. Finally, there were also highlights from Club VR6’s rolling road day, Waterfest and VW Action.

JANUARY 1998

Simon Dodson’s Pistachio Green Mk2 graced the cover back in ’98, its big bumpers, 17” five-spokes and VR6 lump ticking all the boxes at the time. Projektzwo hit us up with the first modded Mk4 around, while a 387bhp Audi Quattro and a big-power Bug gave us our power fix for the month. A couple of home-grown Mk3s battled for space inside with a motorsport-themed Belgian Mk1 Cabrio with a ton of ICE to boot, as well as a UK-spec white Mk2 and a Euro-style Mk1 from Awesome GTI. We also got the spanners out to show you how to fit some snazzy aftermarket lights to a Mk3. Nice!

RCARS

HOLYMOLY

It’s been a slightly slower month on Tom’s project this time, but progress has still been made you’ll be pleased to hear.

Is it bad it made us feel quite happy when Tom admitted progress had been a bit slower this month with his Mk2 Golf project? It’s not that we don’t like to see the car progressing or wish for Tom to not reach his debut deadline of Ultimate Dubs in March, but it just makes us feel a little bit inferior seeing the car come on so well each month when our own projects are all currently standing still.

While Tom isn’t exactly getting his hands dirty with the build, he is project managing the whole thing pretty damn well. This month, Matt at Reflex has finally finished welding up all the unwanted holes in the engine bay and bulkhead. Yes, all 55 of them (not that he was counting - Ed). Tom did joke that 55 wasn’t

quite enough and that he might go and cut a few more holes in the shell, but thankfully he came to his senses and left the thing alone.

In terms of restoration or repairs to the shell, as we said before, Tom managed to source a pretty damn straight car here: “The lower rear panel did have some scabby bits on it so, we (the Royal ‘we’ - All) have trimmed them off completely,” Tom admitted. They decided that basically it no longer needs to be there as the bodykit actually covers that area any way. Let’s call it a weight saving mod, yeah?

While at the bodyshop, Matt then set about building the inner arch extensions for the rear arch to sit on properly, rather than simply fixing the kit to the car and leaving it unsupported. It’s okay to fit the kit this

all

Not gonna lie, even without the bodykit fitted the bodyshell is looking pretty aggresive already.

way for a regular application, but as Tom intended to use the car on track, in anger, then it made sense to make a more heavy duty job of it in this case. As you can see for the photos, one side is complete and the other is almost there.

Once Matt has finished here it will be time to work out how the new carbon roof will be grafted into place, but for now (and your viewing pleasure) Tom had Matt drop the new panel in place. All we can say is, wow! Obviously there’s a sizeable weight saving gain to be made here, but visually, too, it just looks so good. Let’s hope Tom intends to keep the panel bare carbon. We’re sure he does…

Next up the rear beam was sent off to J-Tech for the guys there to work their magic on before it can be reinstalled. We’re presuming this will be blasted, powder coated and a rear disc set-up installed for good measure.

Finally, Tom was pleased to get an update from Kawkes Autoworks to say the trimming

Masking and filling and repeat. Holes filled for smoother look…

NEXT TIME

Super-size me! Tom's plussized Cobra buckets are sent to Kawkes for trimming

filling… “Max has filled some of the vents that aren’t needed across the top and also where the choke mount normally sits. This will make it nice and smooth. The pattern for

the dash has started to take shape, but more on that next month!” We’ll also have details on the plus sized bucket that Corba have prepared for Tom and sent across to Max for trimming ■

Choke holes also filled as we won't be needing that any more, hey, Tom?

INJAPAN

We focus a lot on VW events in Europe and North America, but it’s always great to see the aftermarket water-cooled scene being well represented further a field. Welcome to Japan’s Water Days gathering…

84 Performance VW WATER DAYS GATHERING 2022
Ethos of show is very much people before posing… Hill top setting was very picturesque

Regular readers may recognise the name, Minoru Matsunaga, for we featured his awesome Mk3 Cabrio in our Readers’ Rides pages last year. A hardcore water-cooled VW fan (and an OG PVW reader, too), come 2020 Minoru took it upon himself to launch his first water-cooled VW meeting, called Water Days. Sadly, the global pandemic hit pretty soon after,

and those plans were put on hold until 2021, but that initial event proved such a success with friends that it didn’t take Minoru much persuasion to repeat proceedings in 2022.

Now, Minoru is quick to point out that this isn’t a show but rather an enthusiast meeting. So, there is no Show ’n’ Shine, no trophies and no trade stands (other than a small one from his friend selling VW-related stickers). “We don’t have trophies, but value things

that other car shows don't have. The watercooled VW fans from young people to old men gather from all over to talk. We place great importance on human connection and communication. I think it will expand the world view of VW and lead to long-term liking for water-cooled VW,” Minoru explained.

What you will ind at Water Days is lots of enthusiasts and over 100 modified watercooled VWs of varying ages & stages of tune.

January 2023 85
Car park GTGs are always the best kind, right? Mk6 Golf R on BBS Super RS had sweet GT3 style interior Organiser, Minoru with his Mk3 Cabby and PVW collection (below)

“I did have five staff members helping me park the cars this year, as it’s quite hard to do on your own,” he laughed.

The weather for the 2022 event, held in mid-October last year, was glorious, and the car park location, in Nagano Prefecture (central Japan) offered plenty of space and great views being located at the top of a hill. The event officially runs from 9am until two in the afternoon, after which attendees are allowed to move their cars to park in groups and take extra photos.

In terms of styling, it was great to see the guys favouring a clean look, with plenty of rare wheels and motorsport themes as well. Stand out cars included, of course, Minoru’s own silver Mk3 Cabby which features a chromed VR6, Kamei grille, twin-headlights and Kinesis split rims, plus his good friend, Renta Tan’s white Mk2 Golf parked alongside on Porsche Teledials. “He has been a fan of Mk2s for almost 30 years and is an old friend of mine.” Other head turners included Yasunobu Fukuda’s Imola Yellow Mk4 Golf on

new BBS split rims and Inbe Asanao’s black Mk3 Golf running twin Abt headlights, Schmidt Modern Lines and DTM mirrors. We were also quite fond of the blue Mk6 Golf R on Super RSs and the purple Vento running Rotiform splits and Wilwood callipers. In fact, 99% of the cars at the show were modified in a tasteful fashion, which can’t be said for most global car shows we attend.

It’s clear that these Japanese guys are very passionate about their cars and the global scene, so it’s great we were able to report on the event for them. In fact, I think it’s about time we featured a few more of their cars. Right, who owns that blue Mk6 Golf R we mentioned earlier? We’re coming for you…
