hello!
Thomas Vanderkruk
hello!
2021
/ I am a Architecture student in search of work! /
2
It is my belief that as designers we have a great responsibility to create, shape, and imagine better environments for ourselves, others, and our planet. Attending a school of three cultures, my design emphasis is on place-based design, where it is my belief that a deep understanding of a project’s context is the threshold for phenomenalogical spaces. An education based in hands on learning has developed my skills of craft from the scale of the model to real world applications, as well as shaped my passion for sustainability. I believe the best designs evolve from a collaborative process involving multiple iterations and perspectives. Most importantly I look forward to making new connections while creating impactful spaces along my journey!

Symbiosis
2021
To foster a sustainable and inclusive revitalization of downtown Sudbury, the creation of a stronger sense of place grounded in community is essential. A symbiosis through the weaving of users, program, and natural elements enrich mutually dependent relationships and encourage the desirability of the downtown community.

ARCHITECTURE
HUMAN
Within the mixed-use program, a variety of unit sizes brings together a diverse multi-generational community, while the construction of a productive and generous cycle is encouraged through the integration of public commercial programs grounded in food security, job integration, and community services. In this way, the project works as a series of visible and invisible networks as individual parts combine to form the whole, creating a symbiotic relationship between its inherent parts and the greater community. All work was divided and managed equally between partners. Hand sketches

Sudbury Art Gallery
2020
Located in the downtown core of Greater Sudbury, the demands for a new Art Gallery exist to engage the community and respond to the rising arts culture within the downtown. Balancing the public and non-public attributes of the gallery the design works to create accessible public nodes and spaces that support a gallery oriented in public engagement. A stepped atrium spans through the old brick building physically connecting both streets as well as providing a social interior before entering the gallery. Throughout the galleries, moments of transparency create visual and physical connections between the public and the inner workings of the gallery. Finally, the

The Lake Laurentian Ecology centre aims to mediate the relationship between humans and the natural environment. In a response to remediate the site’s existing hardscaped features, the design strategy aims to balance and connect the four surrounding ecosystems (wetland, deciduous early growth, lake, and coniferous forest). Spanning the existing footprint of the man-made dam, the irregular building form creates unique micro climates for learning and interaction amongst the site’s natural surroundings. A central interior corridor spans the length of the existing dam with both interior and exterior learning spaces branching from within. An intensive roof strategy works to resolve the public circulation of the site as well as filter the

Live / Work. Location | Hypothetical Landscape Team Size | 1 Supervisor | Randall Kober Course | 1st Year Studio Tools | Hand modelling, Graphite, Drafting Timeline | (2018/01 - 04)
Exploring the process of design by creating a series of models and drawings for a hypothetical live/workspace, this design was created and styled for a client with a specific background as an Astrophysicist. The space is divided into 3 stacked programs allowing the form and structure to follow a vertical axis. Four cardinal windows provide light to all three levels guiding the eye along the vertically oriented CLT interior, upwards, past the skylight, and into the celestial.

An iterative design-build project, the task was to create a pavilion located along the annual Ramsey Lake skate path. The use of bentwood modular units enabled a flexible structure mimicking the movement and flow of its context. A vital parameter, the structure exhibits a series of natural wood-to-wood connections with twine and milk-based glue as binding agents. Personal contribution: design leadership, modelling, fabrication, assembly, and documentation. Site Plan: Ramsey Lake

Fostering imagination through the use of exaggerated scale and space, the design premis of this as-build project encourages the child to explore curated areas in a collaborative way that activates their developmental domains through various activities. The use of local aroca ply and select highlight colours promote a modular form and pre-fabricated methedology. While the construction of the structure is optimized with the use of the CNC this playspace offers specific handcrafted instances that cater to the learning experience within, overtop, and around the structure.

Staircase - Germany
Two weeks of as-build experience, renovation and construction for a 14th Century house and 14th-15th Century Barn turned studio office. Work included preparation of as-built drawings for the local building history expert, as well as the construction of wooden formwork and pouring of the sculptural concrete staircase within the barn studio. Projects were alternated between group teams of 8 students over the course of the two weeks.
