PORTFOLIO THOMAS WHITE

DESIGN | DETAIL | DELIVER

I believe that good design has to look, to feel and above all has to work. Great design is about creating something for the world that the world didn’t know was missing.

product designer

Being a second year BA Product Design student at Nottingham Trent University my design skills are constantly evolving, exploring existing and emerging technologies has enabled me to bring ideas to life through each stage of the design processes. The wide variety of briefs undertaken over the last two years has developed my conďŹ dence in all aspects of design, from problem solving and research through to the designing, presentation and manufacturing process.

Enhanced Experience

Nestlé has a strong link with charities but there is no customer choice or interaction. I have designed a way in which a Nestlé chocolate buyer will be given the option to donate money to a chosen charity via an application. I looked at current technology and social media trends, whilst considering how to incorporate the packaging into the final product. I had to consider how the user would interact with the product when on the move.

The Good Life

I had to consider how the experience of living with a long-term, lifestyle-related disease could be improved through taking a greater role in managing care at an individual level, in the home, in the workplace and in a range of social institutions. Ultimately this brief is about helping people who live with long-term conditions of any kind to live better for longer.

Architectural Model

I designed and manufactured a prototype of a rugby pavilion for Cranleigh School, capable of providing the necessary requirements, comfort and relaxation needed by both players and spectators. My aim was to create a model that embraced modern design and architecture whilst keeping the aesthetics clean and attractive.

Brand Premiumisation

Following a brief given by Webb de Vlam, I reviewed the current 100ml Brut aftershave range in order to develop a product that would premiumise the brand. I researched, designed, and developed innovative concepts to push the Brut brand into a premium marketplace standing. Consideration of new consumer behaviours, product packaging and brand impact was essential whilst adhering to a specific target consumer.

Designing for Production

As designers we often approach a project brief without a clear material or production method in mind. In some cases it is not until the later stages of concept development that these crucial factors are considered. This lack of production understanding can often result in unsuccessful outcomes. In this project I was asked to explore the commercial homeware market developing a product or small range of products specifically for CNC fabrication. There are no restrictions on the item/items you produce however I was limited to a single sheet of material.

The Future Of...

Within the design industry strategic foresight has become an ever increasing requirement for a designer’s skill set. By using a research report already compiled, I was tasked to develop and deliver a design solution from my findings. I had to identify a future opportunity through the application of conceptual and critical observation. Exploration and integration of new and emerging technologies, processes and materials was encouraged.

Arthritis Arthritis is a common condition causing painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints which typically worsen with age, preventing the sufferer from leading active, healthy lifestyles. There is no cure for arthritis, but regular movement and exercise helps to strengthen muscles and maintain flexibility in the affected area. Being able to take some control and manage care at an individual level is a positive step towards a better life

65% of people with arthritis have difficulty making a cup of tea when pain is at its most severe

Arthritis is the biggest cause of pain and physical disability in the United Kingdom

There are 10 million people with arthritis in the UK, 15,000 of those are children and young people

9

Ball and socket joint ensures smooth movements for exercises

Specific exercises help relieve pain and stiffness within hands, wrists and arms

Wireless connection to an application records data and progress

This new, state-of-the-art product aims to encourage people, affected by arthritis, to undertake specific exercises to help relieve pain and stiffness within the specific joints.

Careful consideration of ergonomics, materials and anthropometrics

The user can work independently in their own environment, increasing muscle strength, eventually leading to them reducing medication and pain killers.

10

Grabit

Easily accessible application for smart phones or tablets

Wirelessly connect application to the nunchuck to get started

Follow video tutorials to help condition the affected area

By combining the nunchuck and application the user is able to gently move their joints in a controlled manner, helping to condition the affected area. The user can use Grabit in their home and work environment, thus enabling the product to be available 24/7 with no restrictions.

Notifications will be sent if exercises are being done incorrectly

Grabit is a great way to exercise hands, wrists and arms to relive arthritic pain and preserve joint structure and function by increasing joint mobility and flexibility.

I was tasked to design and manufacture a prototype for a new rugby pavilion which would provide the necessary requirements, comfort and relaxation needed for both players and spectators. The aesthetics and ergonomics of the design also needed to reect the schools high standards and the array of outstanding sports facilities on oer. Originating in the 1800’s the school has a well married mixture of old and contemporary buildings, showing that the school is able to move with the times.

The PH5041 Fossil- Philippe Starck

The Lego House - James May

T h e m i n i m a l , y e t s t r i k i n g , avant-garde support mechanism gives the lamp a contemporary aesthetic character. I would like to incorporate simple lines in my design to give a minimalist, contemporary feel to the building.

Ribbing on the cap gives texture and a focal point to an otherwise standard object. I will investigate how texture can be incorporated on surfaces of the building while still remaining contemporary.

Simple yet distinctive watch hands add interest and detail to this minimal design. I would like to design and incorporate a simple yet distinctive pavilion name on the outer area of the building.

The angular and vivid facet gives a quirky yet sophisticated and clean look to this example of a building. Although such a vivid design would not fit into the surrounding Surrey countryside I like the clean look of the design.

A’Trego Restaurant - Philippe Starck The practicalities of angles softened by the introduction of curves draws the eye to diverse aspects of this building. The terrace, with it’s parasols, enclosed by glass which follows the simple line of the curved building has given me an idea how to create a sweeping external staircase.

Brut is a low price aftershave brand launched in 1964. This project with London design consultancy, Webb de Vlam, involved transforming their 100ml aftershave bottle to create a premium brand suitable for sale at a higher cost.

Brut is the brand name for a line of mens’ grooming and fragrance products, first launched in 1964 by Faberge

Unilever sells Brut around the world with large markets in the UK, France and Far East

Brut has always aimed at defining ‘real men’, and their latest campaign ‘BRUT MAN UP’ continues to do this

Modern renaissance man

Being a modern day Renaissance man doesn’t mean you have to be an accomplished poet or master sculptor. Rather, it means being as open to the world as possible and embracing all opportunities as they come your way. It means keeping your mind sharp and your body in good shape, for the mind needs a healthy body to achieve its full potential. It means learning as much as you possibly can. It means traveling and seeing the world, experiencing its people, and learning its language. It means not being afraid to be who you are and feel comfortable in your own skin
