Smoke and Mirrors The Paranoid Interface

This is an archive of surveillance and how it accesses personal information, without the public being aware. surveillance is split in to four taxonomies ; Communications, Data, Tracking and Covert which if combined, can generate a detailed profile of an individual. This therefore makes surveillance an archive of information and questions the blurred lines between privacy and security, as people are archived every day without knowledge of it happening. The archive itself uses surveillance to learn information about the inhabitants using the four taxonomies to generate their own profile, therefore allowing inhabitants to access their own information and to raise awareness of the issues faced by surveillance.

Factory of Menagerie

The concept comes from combining the two definitions of Factory and Menagerie. A factory is defined as a place producing a uniform product, without concern for individuality, while menagerie is a collection of wild or unusual animals, especially for exhibition. This means When combining these two, a Factory of Menagerie is a place which collects unusual animals for exhibition while they are formed in to a uniform product. This derives the concept of the folly and landscape, as the landscape is the menagerie exhibition. This is because the void in the landscape is the captivated area of the inhabitants, who are controlled at the pleasure of “the hand”. The three follies also create the factory in which the inhabitants serve and are controlled by. The three follies also serve one landscape which contains a void in the center. The void is an underground city controlled at the pleasure of “the hand”. The void is also an experimental study and exhibition of the inhabitants. The first folly scans the above landscape for victims to capture, which then transports them to the void.

This is the pod in location, just as it is about to submerse itself, it shows its exterior materiality. This materiality is created by the canal itself, as the brass cladding on the outside of the pod patinates when in this environment and forms a green colour, therefore making the pod even more covert, as it blends in with the canal environement.

Down From London

This project is based on Londoners moving to live by the sea, which has mixed responses from locals. This project aims bring both Londoners and Whitstable locals together through the business that the housing creates. It also aims to play on the types of Londoners who move to Whitstable, these Londoners are of two groups: the young adults and the elderly, who move to the sea to escape the hustle and bustle of the city as well as the house prices. This project targets these individuals and aims to integrate them by creating a space for them to live together, on the basis of an existing London scheme of elderly council housing by the sea and the care share scheme of students mixed with the elderly. The two types of residents will use the traditional jellied eel’s seafood process from the Eastend of London, to create a live work environment for both residents. The young students will learn from the elderly to be able to gain these traditional skills, to become a part of Whitstable’s competitive seafood market, by becoming a niche London traditional producer of eels.

This model was the first iteration of the house and inspired the concept of inhabitable furniture and change in levels, to create inhabitable viewing platforms for the students to watch over the elderly preparing the eels, making the kitchen the central location of interest. This then brought about the idea of a house which is carved in to the landscape, because of the flowing level changes.

This is the Final model, which has been used to capture atmospheric moments through photography of the key internal spaces, such as the kitchen and viewing platform, as well as an exterior eye level photograph to show a sense of scale of the model. These photographs, also highlight the level changes in the model as well as its materiality. This materiality is shown through the pearly reflective interior texture of the model, and the cast concrete elements. The model also shows the eels that will be farmed on site in the water, to show an overall context below the surface.

The Golden Kleptocracy

This project looks at the mass corruption scandal in Lisbon and how the EU bailout of €78 billion from the Troika brought corruption through business from European investors and global investors. This meant that the lack of money in the city pushed politicians to greed, where they made unlawful deals to gain personal wealth. These acts relate to the Golden visa scheme which was the figurehead of corruption in Lisbon and is why the word ‘Golden’ is chosen in the title. The word Kleptocracy meaning “ruled by thieves” is defined as a government with corrupt leaders (kleptocrats) that use their power to exploit the people and natural resources of their own territory in order to extend their personal wealth and political powers. This problem brings to the forefront a need for change in the decision making of the city and the country and thus a grassroots bottom- up approach to tackle corruption working from each community up. This building will therefore be a platform for change within the city and will use collective decisions to rebuild the trust in the city once again.

The process of granting visas itself was tainted with corruption. Portugal’s golden visa scheme was at the centre of a corruption scandal. In 2014 police arrested 11 people as part of Operation Labyrinth, an investigation into allegations that foreigners had been granted golden visas in exchange for bribes. In 2016, the murdered investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia had pointed at alleged irregularities in the process of granting Maltese citizenship to Middle Eastern applicants through the country’s Individual Investor Programme. The allegations range from a total lack of transparency around the process to possible corruption involving a man closely affiliated with Maltese high-ranking officials and the use of shell companies.

Roof debating chamber techtonics

The debating chamber at the very top of the building is the key space in the program and structure hierarchy. The space overlooks all the spaces as well as providing fenestration throughout the building. This provides a transparent location to debate the topics being addressed in the court, broadcasting centre and protest commons, therefore allowing the users debate and come to a collective decisons over the various topics. The dome is also a symbol of governance and power and religion and has been used in this instance, to challenge its function by reversing the hiearchy to its grass roots of public decisons.
