HUNTINGTON AVENUE THEATRE PROJECT

An architectural rendering of a renovated Huntington Avenue Theatre.

A NEW ERA FOR THE HUNTINGTON THEATRE COMPANY

The Huntington Theatre Company’s longtime home on Huntington Avenue is secure and we will continue to produce world-class theatre there for generations to come. As of July 1, 2017, the building formerly known as the Boston University Theatre, has become the Huntington Avenue Theatre, controlled on a permanent basis by the Huntington Theatre Company. The Huntington is currently making plans to renovate our beautiful theatre and expand our services to audiences, artists, and the Greater Boston community. Audiences will notice the first signs of change at the Huntington Avenue Theatre when our 2017–2018 season begins in September while we prepare for the larger renovation project to come. The Huntington has engaged Bruner/Cott & Associates as architects for the Huntington Avenue Theatre project. Known for award-winning designs for seminal projects such as MASS MoCA and the Boston University School of Law, Bruner/ Cott has a reputation for thoughtful design that celebrates the heritage and craftmanship of the past while optimizing resources for sustainable growth. David Epstein, the Huntington’s Chairman of the Board and chief operating officer of real estate company The Abbey Group, played a leading role in the architect selection process. “Bruner/Cott has a great track record of working with arts groups and of reinvigorating older buildings,” says Epstein. “I expect that they will be able to bring out the beauty of our historic theatre, while also creating vibrant new social spaces.” “We’re incredibly excited about this partnership and what it means for Boston,” says Scott Aquilina, principal at Bruner/Cott. “The Huntington project will provide a magnet for community engagement and set the stage for exciting growth and change on the Avenue of the Arts.”

4

The Huntington is extremely grateful for the vocal support and encouragement from our loyal audience members and supporters throughout Greater Boston. For the latest news and information about the Huntington Avenue Theatre, please visit huntingtontheatre.org/FAQ.

HUNTINGTON PRODUCTION CENTER HUNTINGTON PRODUCTION CENTER HAS MOVED TO EVERETT

After an extensive search of the Greater Boston area for a new space, the Huntington Theatre Company Production Center relocated to Everett, Massachusetts on July 1, 2017. The Huntington’s former production facility located at 252-258 Huntington Avenue in Boston, next door to the Huntington Avenue Theatre, will become the site of a new building developed by QMG Huntington LLC, who purchased the lot in May 2016. The new Huntington Theatre Company Production Center in Everett includes 25,000 square feet of production space, 18,000 square feet of storage space, and 4,000 square feet of office space, housing the company’s prop, paint, and scenery shops. The new facility also features open and flexible work areas and onsite prop, costume, and scenery storage, allowing Huntington staff to produce more complex design work in a more efficient workspace and to build upon the Huntington’s community mission by expanding production services to other arts organizations and companies. “The Huntington’s production team has been searching for a new space since May of 2016 and we’re delighted to call Everett our new home,” says Huntington Production Manager Todd Williams. “And while this transition will have its challenges, the production team is looking forward to a workspace where an entire stage floor can be built and painted at one time — with no columns in the way! — and with room to paint both full size backdrops and set pieces simultaneously. The new production facility allows our artisans the space they need to create their best work in the most efficient workspace possible.”

Now she recreates it for Boston audiences! Travelling backwards in time over 30 years in the entertainment business, this legendary, cult favorite musical charts the relationships of close friends Franklin, Charley, and Mary, and features some of Sondheim’s most beautiful songs, including “Good Thing Going,” “Old Friends,” and “Not a Day Goes By.”

A GUIDE FOR THE HOMESICK

by Ken Urban • Directed by Colman Domingo October 6 – November 4, 2017 • South End / Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA ARRESTING NEW DRAMA On his way home after a year in East Africa, a young aid worker goes back to a shabby Amsterdam hotel room with a fellow American. The two strangers replay their pasts and confess their shared fear that they betrayed the people who needed them most. A powerful chance encounter offers the possibility of connection and redemption in this new play by Huntington Playwriting Fellow Ken Urban.

TARTUFFE

by Molière • Translated by Ranjit Bolt • Directed by Peter DuBois November 10 – December 10, 2017 Avenue of the Arts / Huntington Avenue Theatre BRILLIANT CLASSIC COMEDY Devious Tartuffe charms his way into Orgon’s household and schemes to marry his daughter, seduce his wife, and run off with the family’s fortune. Orgon remains entranced despite the appalling evidence of Tartuffe’s behavior – will he see through this con man before it’s too late? Molière spins religious piety and hypocrisy into high comedy in this hilarious and biting satire, one of the world’s great plays.

BAD DATES

by Theresa Rebeck • Directed by Jessica Stone January 26 – February 25, 2018 Avenue of the Arts / Huntington Avenue Theatre IRRESISTIBLE COMEDY Restaurant manager and shoe connoisseur Haley Walker is finally ready to reenter the dating world. by Dominique Morrisseau • March 2 – 31, 2018 South End / Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA RIVETING & TIMELY NEW PLAY In the breakroom of the last small auto plant still standing, a makeshift family of workers swap stories, share dreams, and take pride in their work. When confronted with the possibility of the factory closing, power dynamics shift and each is pushed to the limits of survival. Inspired by August Wilson’s Century Cycle, Dominique Morisseau’s bold and compassionate new play is part of her Detroit Project play cycle.

TOP GIRLS

by Caryl Churchill • Directed by Liesl Tommy April 20 – May 20, 2018 • Avenue of the Arts / Huntington Avenue Theatre DAZZLING CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC Career-driven Marlene has just landed the top job at a London employment agency over a male colleague. To celebrate, she hosts a lavish dinner with a group of famous and adventurous historical women who cheer the successes and bemoan the sacrifices required to be a “top girl” in a man’s world. Caryl Churchill’s groundbreaking masterpiece, originally a rebuke of Margaret Thatcher’s England in the 1980s, remains as relevant and powerful today.

Renowned Hollywood reporter Bernard Weinraub explores the fascinating untold story of Miller and his third wife, photographer Inge Morath, and the divide between their public personas and private lives. PLUS A SPECIAL EVENT

MALA

Named one of the best plays of the year by The Boston Globe, WBUR’s ARTery, and DigBoston when it premiered at ArtsEmerson, this powerful one-woman show written by and featuring Huntington Playwright-in-Residence Melinda Lopez (Sonia Flew, Becoming Cuba) dances between doctors and urgent 911 calls, a mother’s growing frailty, and a 7 daughter’s quest for grace — all set during an epic Boston winter.
