Adventure along the shoreline, paddle the surface, or jump into the waters. Pick a spot on the river for a picnic, then relax with a lazy day along the Similkameen or Tulameen Rivers. Locals know it’s the best way to beat the sizzling summer heat. It’s easy to let go of your cares as you drift between Princeton’s old Brown Bridge and the Bridge of Dreams. You can go further to PY Point, then on to Bromley Rock and even paddle along to the Keremeos Red Bridge and beyond to Kobau Park in Cawston, on to the Chopaka Wooden Bridge. Relax in our rivers. It’s part of what makes your Similkameen experience rugged, rustic, and real. Shuttle services should be made in advance.

Hike, Bike, and Ride at China Ridge

Great trails on China Ridge

Explore 55 km (34 mi) of uncrowded trails in Princeton’s backyard by foot, mountain bike, horse, cross-country ski, or snowshoe. Gather up your friends and family for an adventure in the great outdoors exploring nature. Start your bicycle tour along the China Ridge Trail network which links to the Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail. This is part of The Great Trail, which connects Canada over 24,000 km (14,912 mi) of greenways and roadways, forming the world’s longest network of recreational trails. Follow the scenic 30 km (18 mi) loop that follows the Tulameen

River, through two tunnels and over three bridges, then back into Princeton. Meander down a slope of deciduous and evergreen trees, then make your way through deadfalls and dips, and around trees and rocks as you ride. Your reward is the picturesque White Sands Beach on the KVR along the Tulameen River. Pack a picnic lunch or a snack, bring your bathing suit, and cool off in the swimming hole before you head back on the 18 km (11 mi) ride to Princeton along the KVR Trail. Contact the Princeton Visitor Centre in advance for information on the shuttle service.

Star Gazing

The night sky is deep and dark in the mountain-shadowed lands of Manning Park and throughout the Similkameen, making for some of the best stargazing around. As the days get shorter, the stars appear longer, meaning autumn and winter are excellent seasons for pondering the great beyond. Turn your telescope to the skies and learn about constellations and telescope viewing techniques at a Manning Park Dark Sky event like the annual Astronomy Weekend in October. Manning Park offers telescope rentals, workshops, and directions to stargazing locations.

Orchards and Fruitheirloom Stands Choose from a kaleidoscope of colours and tomatoes, dozens of types of cherries, flavours, from spring until autumn at the fruit stands and orchards that dot the landscape around Keremeos and Cawston. You’ll find a wide variety of just-picked produce, locallymade preserves, and fresh-baked fruit pies. Shop for ingredients for a perfect picnic or to cook up an old family recipe. Choose from over 200 types of peppers, 30 varieties of

many of which are organic. There are plenty of pumpkins, gourds, corn, and more to taste. Shop the weekly farmers’ markets in Princeton and Hedley where you’ll find farmfresh produce and a huge selection of locally crafted works of art. Look around wineries and coffee shops and you might find other examples of preserves and local art on display.

Meadowlark Festival and Manning Park’s Bird Blitz each spring. Princeton’s Swan Lake Nature Reserve offers visitors marked trails, bird blinds, a kettle lake surrounded by a riparian zone, and an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife.

Find your sweet spot in the Similkameen. Carved from the mountains, the Princeton Golf Club offers an affordable challenge to all levels of golfers (18 holes, par 72). There’s a wellstocked pro shop, power carts, pull carts, and club rentals. Hit the 19th hole at their licensed patio restaurant. Stay and play from the fullservice RV park. Try to land an eagle at Twin Lakes Golf Course, the 18-hole course at the other end of the valley on Hwy 3A.

Four Season Fishing The many years rivers and lakes of the Similkameen have lured anglers since time immemorial. Imagine days in the sunshine with a hand-tied fly, dry dip waders, and a fresh water trout cooked on an open campfire. The Similkameen is one of the best spots to angle for trout, mountain whitefish and the elusive west slope cutthroat. There’s plenty to catch in all four seasons and you are sure to have some great fish stories to take home.

Casting an early morning line on a local tributary

Freshwater fishing is easily accessible from many sites along the Crowsnest Highway (3) and 5a, from Princeton to Cawston and points in between, including: • The secluded Chain, Osprey, or Link lakes along the Princeton– Summerland backroad – Drop your line in and drink in the glories of the great outdoors while you’re waiting for something to bite. • Otter Lake in Tulameen – The largest lake in the Similkameen and a favourite spot for locals dreaming of landing the “big one.” • Ashnola, Tulameen, or Similkameen Rivers – Cast your line in the fast running currents and deep watery pools and angle for rainbow and mountain whitefish. • McKenzie, McCaffrey, and Dry lakes – Head out to cattle country where the fish are always biting. Allison Lake near Princeton is teeming with rainbow trout. • Yellow Lake is a popular fishing spot for ice fishing, with rainbow trout, kokanee, and brook trout. Ice fishing on most of our Princeton lakes starts in midDecember and runs through to March. This is mountain country so be prepared with the right gear and you’ll have a whopper of a story to take home. There are literally hundreds of places to start your next fish story. Grab your tackle box and BC Fishing Licence; cast about in our waters and you’ll soon be hooked on the Similkameen. Visit the Princeton Outdoor Supply store for directions to where the fish are biting.

Take a thrilling tube ride down the Manning Park Polar Coaster

Rail Trail, where trains once rolled. Learn the secrets of the 74 km (46 mi) Hudson Bay Company 1849 Trail, which runs from Tulameen to Hope. Take a walk into the past at the Granite Creek Ghost Town, just outside of Princeton. This was the oldest townsite in the area and once a hub for gold seekers. The town burned down in 1907 and only the cemetery remains. However, there are a series of 10 interpretive signs to show you how this once booming town looked in its heyday. Gold runs deep through the Similkameen! Dip a pan into the river and give it a swirl—who knows what you might find! Drop by the Visitor Centre in Princeton for information and maps on where to find public gold panning. Bromley Rock Provincial Park is renowned for the sandy river shore and inviting picnic area at a peaceful rest stop that was once a traditional fishing ground for the Similkameen First Nations. Today, it’s a place to cool off and make a summer memory.

As the snow melts the valley comes to life in the spring

Trails once blanketed with snow reveal themselves to hikers and mountain bikers anxious to get outside and play. When the weather warms, the fruit trees awaken and burst into bloom in the orchards surrounding Cawston. Rivers swell and rapids course more quickly, making for the most adventurous season for paddling our waterways. Take your time, look and listen for wildlife emerging from their winter homes. Bird lovers can drive 6 km (4 mi) from Princeton and settle into one of two bird blinds and watch for migratory birds at the Swan Lake Nature Reserve. TULAMEEN

In summer, relax, swim, boat, waterski, and fish for lake trout. In winter, skate on the covered outdoor ice rink, celebrate with the people of Tulameen (pop 240) with a snowmobile poker run, winter carnival, fishing derby and Family Days.You’ll find Tulameen on the south end of Otter Lake, 26 km (16 mi) northwest of Princeton.

HEDLEY

Come to the eclectic hamlet of Hedley (pop 240), where people still pan for gold in the Similkameen River and the mouth of Hedley/20-mile Creek. Take a tour of the Snaza’ist Discovery Centre and learn about our First Nations and mining history. Visit the Hedley Museum to explore insightful exhibits and the evolution of our town. Look up at Mascot Mine through a telescope and learn to pan for gold at seasonal events. Stop by the Country Store for coffee, pastry, soups, liquor, and other pantry items. Accommodations: RV Park and Motel, tent camping, and a hostel.

KEREMEOS

CAWSTON

Cawston (pop 970+) is just east of Keremeos in what’s known as the Organic Farming Capital of Canada. Living up to its reputation as the Fruit Stand Capital of Canada, the highway between Keremeos and Cawston is where you’ll find a rainbow of colourful stands dotting the landscape. Taste just-picked produce and locally-made preserves from over 15 fruit stands and farm-side markets that dot the wide valley bottom. Sink your teeth into mouth-watering sunkissed fruits and vegetables, grown right here in the Similkameen. Find perfectly ripened cherries, peaches, apricots, crisp apples, fresh vegetables, and more than 200 varieties of peppers. You’ll

also find a tasty assortment of Similkameen honey, jams, preserves, chutney, pies, juices, and wine vinegars. Bite into a piece of fresh-baked pie made from just about every tree fruit you can imagine. Some of the fruit stands have been here for over 100 years, offering an array of just-harvested fruits and vegetables. Things have changed somewhat over the years, reflecting the diversity of the Similkameen Valley. Cawston – Organic Farming Capital of Canada If it comes out of the ground in Cawston, chances are it’s organic, which is why Cawston is known as the Organic Farm Capital of Canada. With nearly 100 certified organic farms, the Lower Similkameen Valley has the highest concentration of organic farms in Canada. Over 40% of farms grow certified organic fruit and vegetables. Our long growing season and hot summer days ensure our fruits and vegetables are some of the tastiest you’ve ever eaten. The dry, windy

conditions are ideal for many types of fruits and vegetables so even the non-certified growers have little need for herbicides and pesticides. The near-desert climate here provides fantastic growing conditions for growing healthy food sustainably. Linger a while and you may meet up with growers happy to chat about their crops. Our growers toil side-byside to produce a bounty of seasonal crops in a place where agriculture is a way of life.

Some of our farmers have worked the family farm for generations, while others are new to the area, brimming with great ideas. Take a bite of a sweet Ambrosia apple, a varietal that was cultivated here in the 1990s. Browse the markets for 200 kinds of peppers and more than 30 varieties of field-grown heirloom tomatoes, dozens of types of cherries, and plenty of pumpkins, gourds, and corn.

Similkameen wineries have made a name for themselves as one of the fastest growing and best grapegrowing regions in Canada. Our beautiful valley is a recognized grapegrowing appellation with an official geographical indicator. The Similkameen Valley terroir is quite unique in that it was created when the glaciers melted, creating a huge river bed. As the water receded it left behind .5 to 1.5 m (2 to 5 ft) of loamy topsoil with calcium-covered river rocks underneath. Combine those elements with sustainable and organic farming practices and you’ve got the ingredients for world-renowned wines crafted right in our backyard. For gluten-free alternatives check out BuyLow Foods in Keremeos for a line of gluten-free treats baked on site. The Grist Mill and Gardens has a delicious Sunday brunch made with fresh heirloom ingredients grown onsite. The al fresco long-table dinners showcase produce in peak season. The Grist Mill takeout menu includes picnic baskets to enjoy either in the gardens or as you explore the Similkameen Valley. The working agricultural Victorian-style ornamental garden grows heritage varieties of apples, wheat, tomatoes, carrots, and some odd crops like Zucca melons and gourds that can weigh up to 120 lbs.
