SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY OUR STORY
A Valley Carved by the River The Bridge of Dreams spans the Similkameen River at Princeton
8 | SimilkameenValley.com #Similkameen
From outdoor adventures by foot, bike, and paddle, to agriculture and wine country, the Similkameen is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered (or re-discovered). Explore stunning scenery in a rugged and rustic land. Get to know the welcoming spirit of the people - we may even tell you a bit about ourselves, our ancestors, and how we came to live in this exquisite valley. Uncover local lore told by the very pioneers who continue to shape our story. Listen carefully and you can hear the echoes of our past and the promise of our future. The Similkameen River’s raw beauty is a reminder of nature’s power. Marvel at the beauty of the valley carved by the Similkameen River over 200 million years ago, flowing
down from the Cascade Mountains. Today, the valley gives way to open ranchlands and meadows of alfalfa waving in the breeze, with craggy cliffs, lush orchards, and vineyards shifting to semi-arid grasslands. It’s where you’ll find us: walking mountain trails, fishing, picnicking, and relishing the beauty of where we live. We’ve been happy to share it with generations of travellers. We’d love to share it with you.
ANCIENT APPLES, ABANDONED MINING TOWNS, & REVIVED RAILWAYS
Our history is steeped in exploration and discovery. Walk in the footsteps of our
SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY OUR STORY pioneers, fur traders, and prospectors. Legends abound of the Similkameen First Nation, the Granite Creek Gold Rush in Coalmont, and the days of the Hudson Bay Brigade. Listen to our stories unfold at the Hedley Heritage Museum, and Princeton’s unique museum. Marvel as our curators bring the past to life. Discover the past at the South Similkameen Museum and Visitor Centre in Keremeos. Learn about the Indigenous people of the Similkameen at the Snaza’ist Discovery Centre. Discover sustainable farming with a tour and lunch at Harker’s Organics in Cawston, or shop at Parsons Farm Market in Keremeos. Gaze in awe as you stand under a 100-year-old apple tree. Savour the flavours of multi-generational organic farms, orchards, and vineyards.
In Princeton, explore the gentle railway grades of the historic Kettle Valley Rail Trail, a part of The Great Trail of Canada (formerly the Trans Canada Trail). Create your own legends filled with grit and adventure along the wilderness trails of China Ridge, Manning Park, Cathedral Lakes Park, and the Hudson Bay Company Brigade Trail.
SEASONS OF THE SIMILKAMEEN
Each season brings a fresh adventure. In winter, explore the trails by snowshoe or nordic ski. The Manning Park Resort Ski Area has two chairlifts and a tube park. Try ice fishing in one of our many lakes. In spring, our valley blooms with colour and our rodeos thrill. In the summer heat, seek out cool breezes on
our alpine trails and lakes. In the fall taste your way across the lower part of the valley at our harvest events, sample our award-winning wines, and sink your teeth into just-baked pies made of fruit picked that morning.
CONNECT TO OUR ARTS AND CULTURE
The cultural arts scene is as varied as the landscapes of the Similkameen Valley, bursting with music and food, rodeos and aboriginal dancers, fiddle players, and renowned Canadian performers and up and comers. Springtime is rodeo season, when the dusty air is alive with the scent of BBQ sauce and bulls. Come see our cowboys in action at the Chopaka Rodeo, the Keremeos Elk’s Rodeo, and Princeton’s Stan
Thompson Memorial Rodeo. Be serenaded at the Grist Mill and Gardens summer concert series featuring stories of days past set to music. Watch as Princeton’s Veterans Square Gazebo comes alive with an art and music experience every Saturday in summer. Take in countless events from wine festivals to endurance races, from a First Nations Pow Wow to the Princeton Show ’N Shine. Purchase some local art at the Sunflower Gallery or the Red Post Art Gallery in Princeton and at the One Eyed Budgie in Keremeos. Celebrate the Traditional Music Festival when it hits the streets of Princeton in August or explore the richness of our rural life at Princeton’s Agricultural Fall Fair. ➤

Gather up your friends and family for an adventure in the great outdoors exploring nature. Start your bicycle tour along the China Ridge Trail network which links to the Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail. SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY KEY EXPERIENCES
Star Gazing
The night sky is deep and dark in the mountain-shadowed lands of Manning Park and throughout the Similkameen, making for some of the best stargazing around. As the days get shorter, the stars appear longer, meaning autumn and winter are excellent seasons for pondering the great beyond. Turn your telescope to the skies and learn about constellations and telescope viewing techniques at a Manning Park Dark Sky event like the annual Astronomy Weekend in October. Manning Park offers telescope rentals, workshops, and directions to stargazing locations.
Orchards and Fruitheirloom Stands Choose from a kaleidoscope of colours and tomatoes, dozens of types of cherries, flavours, from spring until autumn at the fruit stands and orchards that dot the landscape around Keremeos and Cawston. You’ll find a wide variety of just-picked produce, locallymade preserves, and fresh-baked fruit pies. Shop for ingredients for a perfect picnic or to cook up an old family recipe. Choose from over 200 types of peppers, 30 varieties of
many of which are organic. There are plenty of pumpkins, gourds, corn, and more to taste. Shop the weekly farmers’ markets in Princeton and Hedley where you’ll find farmfresh produce and a huge selection of locally crafted works of art. Look around wineries and coffee shops and you might find other examples of preserves and local art on display.
The Ambrosia apple variety was discovered in a Cawston orchard in the 1990s
Birdwatching & Wildlife The dark sky above Manning Park
Fore!
We consider our wildlife one of the true treasures of our valley. Plenty of wildlife live here, including eagles, deer, elk, moose, bear, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep. Explore the richness of our diverse ecosystem and abundant wildlife at the
Meadowlark Festival and Manning Park’s Bird Blitz each spring. Princeton’s Swan Lake Nature Reserve offers visitors marked trails, bird blinds, a kettle lake surrounded by a riparian zone, and an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife.
Bring your camera for birdwatching and wildlife viewing
Golf in the heart of scenic Similkameen
Find your sweet spot in the Similkameen. Carved from the mountains, the Princeton Golf Club offers an affordable challenge to all levels of golfers (18 holes, par 72). There’s a wellstocked pro shop, power carts, pull carts, and club rentals. Hit the 19th hole at their licensed patio restaurant. Stay and play from the fullservice RV park. Try to land an eagle at Twin Lakes Golf Course, the 18-hole course at the other end of the valley on Hwy 3A.

SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY KEY EXPERIENCES
Four Season Fishing The many years rivers and lakes of the Similkameen have lured anglers since time immemorial. Imagine days in the sunshine with a hand-tied fly, dry dip waders, and a fresh water trout cooked on an open campfire. The Similkameen is one of the best spots to angle for trout, mountain whitefish and the elusive west slope cutthroat. There’s plenty to catch in all four seasons and you are sure to have some great fish stories to take home.
Casting an early morning line on a local tributary
Freshwater fishing is easily accessible from many sites along the Crowsnest Highway (3) and 5a, from Princeton to Cawston and points in between, including: • The secluded Chain, Osprey, or Link lakes along the Princeton– Summerland backroad – Drop your line in and drink in the glories of the great outdoors while you’re waiting for something to bite. • Otter Lake in Tulameen – The largest lake in the Similkameen and a favourite spot for locals dreaming of landing the “big one.” • Ashnola, Tulameen, or Similkameen Rivers – Cast your line in the fast running currents and deep watery pools and angle for rainbow and mountain whitefish. • McKenzie, McCaffrey, and Dry lakes – Head out to cattle country where the fish are always biting. Allison Lake near Princeton is teeming with rainbow trout. • Yellow Lake is a popular fishing spot for ice fishing, with rainbow trout, kokanee, and brook trout. Ice fishing on most of our Princeton lakes starts in midDecember and runs through to March. This is mountain country so be prepared with the right gear and you’ll have a whopper of a story to take home. There are literally hundreds of places to start your next fish story. Grab your tackle box and BC Fishing Licence; cast about in our waters and you’ll soon be hooked on the Similkameen. Visit the Princeton Outdoor Supply store for directions to where the fish are biting.

Rail Trail, where trains once rolled. Learn the secrets of the 74 km (46 mi) Hudson Bay Company 1849 Trail, which runs from Tulameen to Hope. Take a walk into the past at the Granite Creek Ghost Town, just outside of Princeton. This was the oldest townsite in the area and once a hub for gold seekers. The town burned down in 1907 and only the cemetery remains. However, there are a series of 10 interpretive signs to show you how this once booming town looked in its heyday. Gold runs deep through the Similkameen! Dip a pan into the river and give it a swirl—who knows what you might find! Drop by the Visitor Centre in Princeton for information and maps on where to find public gold panning. Bromley Rock Provincial Park is renowned for the sandy river shore and inviting picnic area at a peaceful rest stop that was once a traditional fishing ground for the Similkameen First Nations. Today, it’s a place to cool off and make a summer memory.

Similkameen Spring
As the snow melts the valley comes to life in the spring
Trails once blanketed with snow reveal themselves to hikers and mountain bikers anxious to get outside and play. When the weather warms, the fruit trees awaken and burst into bloom in the orchards surrounding Cawston. Rivers swell and rapids course more quickly, making for the most adventurous season for paddling our waterways. Take your time, look and listen for wildlife emerging from their winter homes. Bird lovers can drive 6 km (4 mi) from Princeton and settle into one of two bird blinds and watch for migratory birds at the Swan Lake Nature Reserve. Get your cowboy on at the Chopaka, Princeton, and Keremeos rodeos and let the pros show you how it’s done. It’s all part of the adventure and excitement of spring in the Similkameen.
Similkameen Autumn Autumn transforms the unique
Autumn harvest at Rustic Roots Winery
landscape of the Similkameen Valley, casting a natural mosaic of vibrant hues all along the Similkameen and Tulameen rivers. Travel along Hwys #3 and 5A for adventures set on a backdrop of rolling hills, soaring mountains, crystalline lakes, and broad valley vistas. The cool temperatures are perfect for hiking, biking, and wine touring. Larch trees in the Cascade Mountain trails of Manning Park turn yellow before casting away needles. Vintners bring in deep rouge grapes from the vineyards. The harvest season brings a delightful selection of culinary experiences at wineries, restaurants, and markets. Ask the locals about what the farm harvested today!

FRESH FLAVOURS
Keremeos– Fruit Stand Capital of Canada
Living up to its reputation as the Fruit Stand Capital of Canada, the highway between Keremeos and Cawston is where you’ll find a rainbow of colourful stands dotting the landscape. Taste just-picked produce and locally-made preserves from over 15 fruit stands and farm-side markets that dot the wide valley bottom. Sink your teeth into mouth-watering sunkissed fruits and vegetables, grown right here in the Similkameen. Find perfectly ripened cherries, peaches, apricots, crisp apples, fresh vegetables, and more than 200 varieties of peppers. You’ll
also find a tasty assortment of Similkameen honey, jams, preserves, chutney, pies, juices, and wine vinegars. Bite into a piece of fresh-baked pie made from just about every tree fruit you can imagine. Some of the fruit stands have been here for over 100 years, offering an array of just-harvested fruits and vegetables. Things have changed somewhat over the years, reflecting the diversity of the Similkameen Valley. You can now find exotic Indian dishes, East Asian fashions, and the handiwork of local artisans as well. You can meet some
of the friendliest people here over a bushel basket of fresh greens or a pile of pumpkins—
growers dropping off a delivery, professional chefs and home cooks shopping for produce in bulk, and folks putting together a perfect picnic.
The valley is proud of its produce
Cawston – Organic Farming Capital of Canada If it comes out of the ground in Cawston, chances are it’s organic, which is why Cawston is known as the Organic Farm Capital of Canada. With nearly 100 certified organic farms, the Lower Similkameen Valley has the highest concentration of organic farms in Canada. Over 40% of farms grow certified organic fruit and vegetables. Our long growing season and hot summer days ensure our fruits and vegetables are some of the tastiest you’ve ever eaten. The dry, windy
conditions are ideal for many types of fruits and vegetables so even the non-certified growers have little need for herbicides and pesticides. The near-desert climate here provides fantastic growing conditions for growing healthy food sustainably. Linger a while and you may meet up with growers happy to chat about their crops. Our growers toil side-byside to produce a bounty of seasonal crops in a place where agriculture is a way of life.
Some of our farmers have worked the family farm for generations, while others are new to the area, brimming with great ideas. Take a bite of a sweet Ambrosia apple, a varietal that was cultivated here in the 1990s. Browse the markets for 200 kinds of peppers and more than 30 varieties of field-grown heirloom tomatoes, dozens of types of cherries, and plenty of pumpkins, gourds, and corn.
Orchard & Vineyard Stays
These family run boutique guest accommodations are your chance to sip, savour, and stay on a working orchard or vineyard. Stay right on the farm at Farmersdotter Organics or Klippers Organics. Take a stroll through the lavender patch and the herb garden at Tree to Me B&B and shop at the onsite market filled with produce from their own organic farm. Wake up to beautiful vineyard
views in one of Orofino’s luxury fully equipped vineyard suites. Stay in a German Country Inn at Crowsnest Vineyard, enjoying daily fresh-baked bread and your morning coffee as you stroll through a vineyard or farm. WHERE TO SIP
TASTE OUR TERROIR
Similkameen wineries have made a name for themselves as one of the fastest growing and best grapegrowing regions in Canada. Our beautiful valley is a recognized grapegrowing appellation with an official geographical indicator. The Similkameen Valley terroir is quite unique in that it was created when the glaciers melted, creating a huge river bed. As the water receded it left behind .5 to 1.5 m (2 to 5 ft) of loamy topsoil with calcium-covered river rocks underneath. Combine those elements with sustainable and organic farming practices and you’ve got the ingredients for world-renowned wines crafted right in our backyard. Popular varietals include: Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and

CIDER & FRUIT WINES
Beat the summer heat with one of our delicious apple or pear ciders. These traditional, hard ciders come in a range of styles from dry to semisweet, and some are even blended with other fruits to create delightful summer sippers. Many cideries and fruit wineries use organically grown fruit because of the favourable conditions here and a commitment to respecting our land. Sample a wide variety of organic fruit wines, overlooking the Similkameen River at Forbidden Fruit Winery. Sip ciders looking out at the orchards where the fruit was grown at Klippers Untangled Craft Cider. Enter the cider dome at Twisted Hills Craft Cider for a taste of sweet organic artisan cider. ➤
