The British Isles
A Visual Journey 8th – 26th April 2015
Opening - Wednesday 8th April, 11am – 7pm. Please RSVP to enquiries@thompsonsgallery.co.uk This exhibition is a celebration of the visual diversity of the British Isles, through some of our most celebrated painters. It seeks to be a representation of the everchanging landscapes and habitats visited by us all. In turn, it is a celebration of the breadth of artistic style, illustrated by the many varying approaches to painting on location. Through these selected artists, we get a refined look at the British Isles, not exhaustive of its geography, but extensive in its stylistic interpretations. The exhibition hopes to combine both contemporary and traditional approaches to painting, to achieve a harmonious balance of both new and familiar styles.

Ronald f Smith rsw Former Glasgow School of Art graduate, Ronald Smith, paints assiduously from his Glasgow studio, with his landscapes taking us from the British Isles and beyond. His style of painting, bold inspired colours, often testify to the overriding atmosphere of an environment rather than any naturalistic colour palette – they are striking and profoundly touching representations of their subject. The artist’s awards include the David Cargill Award and the John Cunningham Award.
David Sawyer rba (front cover) Sawyer commonly paints a wide variety of locations with his main interest being buildings and architecture. His painting style often retains the under-painting, consciously exposing his superior draftsmanship, completing the picture without it becoming overworked. In 2011 he was also awarded first prize in the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall Centenary painting competition. His work is regularly shown in open exhibitions at the Mall Galleries. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British artists in 2004 and has received several awards within that Society. He was also awarded the prestigious de Laso medal during the 2013 RBA exhibition. 2

Andrew Tozer From a Cornish family, Andrew Tozer moved to London to study art, where he graduated from Central Saint Martin’s School of Art. However, he is most at home in the open landscape and fresh air that comes with painting countryside locations and had since returned to Cornwall to follow his compulsion to articulate, with paint, the backdrop of his childhood.

Nael Hanna Born in 1959 in Nineva, Northern Iraq Hanna was awarded a Scholarship by the Ministry of Education, Bagdad, to study art in Britain. In 1987, Nael won a further scholarship to study at Hospitalfield Summer School, Arbroath and it was during this time that he developed his great passion to paint the East coast of Scotland. Hanna’s style is energetic and lyrical in delivery, always retaining a true sense of place within the heavily built-up painting surface. In 1989, Hanna was awarded The Royal Scottish Academy John Kinross Scholarship, after which Hanna moved to Dundee and the rural Angus countryside where he made his home. Hanna is a regular exhibitor at the RGI, RSA, SSA and SSAC annual shows. 12

Michael Alford
Malcolm Ashman roi rba
Born in Cookham, England, Alford went on to Durham to study Spanish and Arabic. After extensive travels abroad, Alford returned to the UK and pursued artistic studies at the Slade School of Art and the Chelsea School of Art. Known for his ability to blend classical technique with a sharp, modern sensibility, his work can be found in public and private collections around the world. Alford is best known for masterful cityscapes of contemporary urban centres such as London, New York and Barcelona. .
Having trained at Somerset College of Art, Malcolm Ashman’s developed a painting style that is created through a mixture of observation and imagination. Making drawings on location, the artist then returns to his studio to compose the image both from the reference material and equally from memory. Imagination helps to fill in the gaps of information. The resulting landscapes are often, somehow, more true to life than the landscapes themselves. Ashman has most recently been represented in the Threadneedle Art Prize award.

Alma Wolfson
Robert Wells depicts varying English locations and paces of life. He seeks out new views of landmarks and scenes – encouraging the viewer to see the familiar from a different perspective. He paints directly from life, on location and in all weather – rain-soaked streets being an attraction rather than an aversion. He has regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the NEAC.
Be it unstable Scottish weather conditions, or the subtle seasonal changes unfolding from the artist’s studio window, Alma Wolfson treats her subjects equally, with inspired respect. Broad, wet-on-wet brushstrokes give way to textured definition, all combining to give an impression of immediacy and reverence for the Scottish countryside in which she resides. A leading contemporary Scottish painter, Wolfson has developed a career that has seen her collect many notable awards and has had several successful exhibitions with Thompson’s Galleries.

John Lines rbsa rsma kae Born in Warwickshire, John Lines’ paintings represent the gritty urban and rural classes and the duality of these shared landscapes. Often foregrounding his work in a humorous social setting, his paintings encompass the wider world from which these subjects are cast. Travelling throughout the Midlands and north of the country, Lines goes to painstaking lengths to find the correct subjects for his social landscape scenes. Lines has previously won first prize at Museum of Modern Art, Wales, as well as first prize at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and several awards at the RSBA.
David Anthony Hall Hall’s gargantuan nature photographs exude a sense of calm and, perhaps not surprisingly, have been used by architects and designers to add a sense of soul to their buildings. Hall’s work is held in private collections in fifteen countries and he has also exhibited extensively as part of group and solo shows. Hall’s pictures have been seen in venues ranging from The Royal College of Art to The Royal Academy of Art and from New York to Singapore, as well as with Thompson’s Galleries at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. 24
