PAUL WRIGHT This January, Thompson’s Gallery Marylebone is proud to host an exhibition of new paintings by Paul Wright. Paul Wright trained as an illustrator at the Falmouth College of Art and is now based in Leicester, he has lectured at Loughborough University, alongside working as a practicing artist. Wright’s brushstrokes in the past few years have become striking and more abstracted forms of his earlier, controlled style. The artist’s earlier work is reminiscent of Lucien Freud, but in recent years Wright’s work has become brighter, bolder and more courageous in execution. Wright has commented before that each portrait is a kind of selfportrait – this can apply as both a reflection of the viewer as well as of the artist himself. The bold vibrancy of brushstrokes makes the canvas radiate – every time a viewer approaches one of Wright’s works an alternative image appears, subtly changing and evolving as you take it in. Every viewer will take away a different version of the canvas, one created in part by his or her own perception.
