Resume BACHELOR STUDENT

// Aarhus School of Architecture

M

y name is Thor K. Løfgreen Nielsen and I am a 24 year old graduate architecture student from Aarhus. I write to you regarding application for an internship. I completed my bachelor studies at Aarhus school of architecture, in Denmark. I have been admitted to the Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design in Israel for one semester, and actual exchanges went really well and I came out with overall fine combined grade of A (87.5) I am very suited in the structure and school facilities, since I’m spending much in the workshops. I enjoy the energetic studio environment and late hours working with fellow students in order to produce great architectural designs I find pleasure in making things with my hands, which I think, has given me as appreciation and sensitivity for materials and their inherent properties. I find it important to prototype and build models in order to understand the characteristics and performance of materials and detail junctions. I also believe that model making is not only a way to visualize the already designed, but an important process in which a design can be developed. I spend much of my free time traveling around the world, seeing new cities, culture and traditions. I think it helps me develop my skills and view on architecture through firsthand experience with urban environments – gaining exposure to various cultures and broadening my view of the world today. I am now ready and eager to continue my architectural adventure to lean more, and I believe you is a great place to lean more.

BACHELOR PROJECT // Aarhus School of Architecture

CLENSING OF GODSBANEN

A

s in the autumn semester, we are maintaining a strong emphasis on digital design methods and digital fabrication technologies. Particularly robotic hotwire cutting and CNC-milling will be introduced as methods for processing EPS foam for making of casting moulds. All projects will be developed in Rhino 3D (or equivalent software) and we will discuss parametric strategies, mainly available through use of Grasshopper. During the semester we will discuss the relation between to be and to build i.e. construction and the creation of space as a link to the fundamental matter of being.

6

We are now going to work in 1:1 scale, focusing on a single material type, namely lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA). Saint-Gobain/Weber will provide us with the LECA material needed for investigation and casting of the elements. During the semester we will explore and investigate the inherent qualities of this material. How does the material work in terms of structural strength? What are the architectural qualities within the material and how does it work environmentally? To obtain as much knowledge of the material as possible, we will take a trip to the manufacturing plot and learn form the process of producing LECA.

SPACE OF REFLECTION // Unit 2/3 F, 6th semester

Master plan // Future New AARCH second area for New AARCH Dense City Event Area

The project period will be split in two sections. The first section of one month will include all students divided into groups. During this period you are going to explore and investigate deeply into the LECA material regarding the overall themes of the semester. The knowledge you have received from your prior semester in the workshops will form the basis for these studies. You are going to investigate material properties, fabrication method, construction method, surface texture and geometry.

M

y project is somewhat a response to the municipality, compared to what they would like with the area. I do not think Aarhus K is a bad idea, but I’ll try to maintain and make the ”green lung” major. This will occur automatically at the intake my building abates. In addition, there is still room in the area for some of the initiatives the municipality will have through. The project is as I said, a 2pcs actions on freight line. One part has a future and a time period of 1020 years, to clean the ground up. The second part is the here and now part. This part is based on the present, since there is still the opportunity to introduce my raised beds.

he area of Godsbanen is the link between nature and the city, this is where the two elements meet. But due the industrial past, the soil is very polluted and as a result the nature has suffered My vision for this area is to clean the earth at Godsbanen and make it green, thereby strengthening the green link between Aarhus city and the green wedge from the west. I will use 3 steps to make this happen - cleansing the soil, the “high garden”, and the hive. I will use 3 steps to make this happen - cleansing the soil, the “high garden”, and the hive. Section

ince the ground is heavily polluted, I will use different plants to clean the soil. however the downside to this step is that it will take a long time to clean it all out. So I will introduce my second step, which is my “high garden” concept. I would like in the future, that this area can be used for public farming for those who don’t own a garden at home. So in the future, the soil is clean and you can grow your own plants and vegetables to eat. My high gardens will introduce users to this site as a “green area”. These “pots” will be placed all over Godsbanen, and by doing so, create not only a green area, but also a new society where people can have a taste of being a garden owner and have new neighbors. his concept of urban gardening will take form with different platforms, on which the pots will stand, since it is not possible to plant in the soil just yet. In the end the area will include many platforms that are spred out over the area with the “high gardens pots on top of them. Between those platforms, is where the cleansing plants and trees are located. So its not only the pots, which will make the area green, but also the cleaning plants, which will create this new green lung within the city.

We will explore the notion of architectural anchoring as it surfaces in our everyday surroundings. This project was made by groups of two people, and needed to make a folly at the site, which underline the qualities or what is missing at the site.

The choice between different sites was quite straightforward for us, after we quickly agreed the concepts we want to work with. Based on this selection detailed method had two locations to choose from. However, we came forward to Mejlborg as this small area contains a lot of contrasts. Some of these topics are: open / limited - a shared place, but is not open to the public. Additionally, there are lots of repetitions in from of materials including (windows, brick, etc.) The Material design is (static and repetitive) Dynamic and movement. in this area, my

ere we will show how you really are seeing the folly, if it was build. Because, when you are inside, your own window is the frame and your connation to outside where the folly is. So you will use most of your time being inside and looking out. Here we will show how it would look like.

n the section, you will see how the placement of our final folly is placed. As you can see, the whole folly is starting from the top and will end its ending with all the different connections pointing at the main gate. The reason why this is happing is, we want to force the people coming through the gate to see up and guild their eyes around in Meljborg.

It has been important, in the choice of context and program, that cultural and traditional aspects are addressed and worked into the project, as a direct link to the theme of the year - “Anchoring“. Not something to be avoided, but rather an advantage and potential for the outcome of the proposal. It is important to understand that the assignment is to reflect on and

CADDES{

interpret these contextual and programmatic aspects and through this, establish an individually defined and own architectural response. This year study trip will be to Istanbul in week 8, where we will work on gaining insight into the premises of project development in a given context. In Istanbul you will be introduced to traditional as well as contemporary architecture and we will further investigate cases relating to the semester assignment in particular. You will conduct these investigations based on the 3 anchoring themes of the fall semester; “Spatial”, “Physical” and “Cultural” anchoring and the overall theme of “light”.

35

T

he spring assignment F15 is based on the overall theme of this year - “Anchoring”. By further exploring and addressing the Unit’s anchoring sub themes; “Spatial”, “Physical” and “Cultural” anchoring, we will be studying and producing a project proposal for a Turkish bath and café in Istanbul - the hamam. The assignment continues the work and discussions of the autumn semester and challenges the established methods and tools, while also introducing the architectural program. Furthermore the overall theme of “light” is introduced, as a specific field of investigations closely related to the topic of the assignment. Istanbul was founded in 660 BC. Istanbul lies on both sides of the Bosphorus strait and is therefore both part of Asia and Europe straddling two continents and bridging between them. Due to its strategic position and changing empires the city has undergone vast cultural changes, which is reflected in the city today especially in its architecture. The name “Istanbul” comes from Greek “Is tin polin” and simply means “The city”.

Süleymaniye mosque. In this part of town there are many mosques in relation to hamams. It therefore makes perfect sense to make a hamam in this area, as hamam and mosques have always gone hand in hand. It has always done for religious reasons, as cleanliness through water is a big part of the Islamic context when you need to wash your face, hands and the feet before you can ask your prayer.

HAMAM PROJECT // Unit 14F, 4th semester

HAMAM PROJECT // Unit 14F, 4th semester

Plans and isometric The general concept of the building is brutalism. Istanbul consists of many different geometrical forms, textures and building materials. The idea is to place a cube hovering as a clear form contrasting to the rest of the city. The cube is superior to the rast of the building, that floats from its shadow like a ship floats from an anchor. The building is very extrovert in its expression from the outside, but when moving along inside the cube the lighting and connection between the rooms gives a perception of moving introvert further and further into the building into the most holy room - the hot room inside the cube.

SECTION: OUTSIDE | INSIDE – INSIDE | OUTSIDE

T

his workshop is the start on our group work. Those groups are built of two students, which have to create a section through Aarhus City Hall. To create the section we have to decide on a specific route through Aarhus City Hall, where we pass from the outside to the inside or from the inside to the outside with the semester theme in mind, anchoring. The route must have a level of complexity and will afterwards be unfolded to fit a model, where a part of the section must be three-dimensional. The concept for the model is deconstruction and decomposition. We will use the human body in the architectural universe to combined different scale and sizes, in one composition create a decentralization of the human body in dialog with the surroundings
