e take our statement that every room at Malangen Resort comes with a view seriously. Our large glass-fronted sauna is located right by the waterfront, so you can enjoy unsurpassed views of the spectacular fjord and mountains while relaxing in the warmth of the sauna. The view adds an extra dimension to your sauna experience. Could we claim to have the world’s most scenic sauna? A changing room with shower and toilet facilities is located adjacent to the sauna. Towels are included in the price. Our open-air hot tub is located alongside the glass-fronted sauna. The hot tub is ideal for groups, families or couples wanting to share a special experience together.

Like the glass-fronted sauna and virtually every other facility at Malangen Resort, the hot tub offers spectacular views of the fjord and mountains. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the majestic Northern Lights during a relaxing dip in the warm water. The open-air hot tub and sauna may be hired as a package on request. It is necessary to book in advance, as the hot tub needs time to reach the optimal temperature. The glass-fronted sauna and open-air hot tub have a secluded location right at the end of the resort down from the Aurora event cabin.

Our chef emphasises using local ingredients and products in all our dishes to ensure the freshest and healthiest food for our guests. The sea is the main supplier to our menu due to the proximity and easy access to the freshest seafood available. THE AURORA LOUNGE (The Naust) The “naust” is a 100-year-old boathouse that has been renovated and relocated inside the hotel building. All the decorations are authentic and donated by locals who have handed the memorabilia down from generation to generation. This cosy building serves as our “living room” for our guests to relax in during the wintertime with board games, books and candles.

CAMP NIKKA WILDERNESS CAMP

omprising two large lavvus (Sami herdsmen’s tents), a rustic shelter and toilet facilities, Camp Nikka is just a 15-minute walk from Malangen Resort. It is the base for our nature-based adventures and forms an important part of our complete resort concept. Instead of sleeping at one place, eating at another and spending hours driving in between activities or chasing the Northern Lights, everything at Malangen Resort is within walking distance. Camp Nikka is situated on the shores of the picturesque Nikkavannet (Lake Nikka). The camp is situated 70 m above sea level in the pristine wilderness behind the resort. During winter, you can walk on the frozen lake and enjoy the fresh mountain air. The surrounding forest trails are the venue for our popular and personalised excursions. There is no electricity up at Camp Nikka, which means there is virtually no artificial lighting. This enhances your Northern Lights experience and makes Camp Nikka a real hotspot in the Tromsø region for experiencing this natural phenomenon. On cold winter nights or during nature-based experiences in the daytime, you can warm up in one of our lavvu tents. Sitting on a warm reindeer skin on a wooden bench beside the open fire, you will quickly warm up and get new energy for your next adventure. alangen Resort is situated in one of the most visited Northern Light hotspots in the Tromsø area. "The Watch" enhances our guest's opportunity of seeing the mystical Northern Lights. We prepare for this magical journey with a briefing about this natural phenomenon and the current conditions before we set off to our very own basecamp, Camp Nikka, located just a 20-minute walk from the resort. Camp Nikka is strategically located behind our resort in a location that experiences less cloud activity. Our guides statistics in recent years show that chances of experiencing Northern Lights here are around 85 per cent! UNCHAINED DOGS The dog yard at Malangen Resort has been designed with the welfare of the dogs in mind. The dogs here are unchained. They live in pairs in pens where they can move freely around. To ensure that the dogs get enough physical and mental exercise every day throughout the year, we have a big yard where they can run and play in groups together. 19

SAMI STORYTELLING AND REINDEER FEEDING

oin us on a journey through Sami culture. The Sami are the indigenous people living in Europe’s northern extremes. Enter a lavvu (Sami herdsmen’s tent) with a Sami specialist and hear fascinating stories about the way of life of the indigenous Sami people, their history and beliefs in the glow of the open fire. You will see traditional Sami artifacts and taste authentic Sami food cooked on the fire. SNOWMOBILING This unique excursion is especially designed for people going on a snowmobile adventure for the first time. The scenic route is situated between high Arctic mountains. We drive on a prepared trail in a wide-open area on frozen ground past small, picturesque forests with spectacular views. he best way to enhance your chances of experiencing the Northern Lights is to be outside in the evening. This exciting and informative activity gets you out and about in the white winter landscape above the resort.

RESORT TO SUMMIT Stay in comfort at the resort and experience some of Europe’s wildest and most beautiful mountains. Unlike the Alps in Central Europe, the mountains in Northern Norway plunge straight down into the sea. Malangen Resort is surrounded by mountain peaks that are ideal for summit ski climbs. With many peaks to choose between, there are good options for novices and experienced ski touring enthusiasts alike.

THE SEVEN SUMMITS Seven of the mountain peaks on the Malangen peninsula are about a 30-minute drive, making them easily accessible with transport from the resort. Various routes up the mountains have been mapped by ski touring and avalanche expert Espen Nordahl, who has literally written the book Ski Touring in Troms. Nordahl has combined his own experiences with the knowledge of experienced locals when working out the routes up and down the mountains. These routes and maps provide the foundation for being able to describe the best ski touring options on the Malangen peninsula in detail, as well as for being able to ski up and down the mountains as safely as possible. Guests on Malangen Resort’s “Resort to Summit” follow in the footsteps of some of Norway’s most experienced Arctic mountain skiers.

Malangen Resort’s ski tou ring adventures have been designed in collaboration with Espen Nordahl (b. 1960). He has been one of the most eager ski touring enthusiasts in Tromsø since he moved to the city in 1982. He has worked as a project manager at the Centre for Avalanche Research and Education (CARE) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and as an avalanche forecaster for the Norwegian Energy Regulatory Authority. Nordahl is the editor of the book Safer Ski Touring in Norway. Nordahl has written the book Ski Touring in Troms, which is the bible for the skiers in the ski touring capital Tromsø.

RESORT TO SUMMIT GUIDED TOUR Our experienced guides will lead you and your travelling companions up to the summit of selected mountains in the Malangen area. All the mountains are within a 30-minute drive of the resort where, as a guest, you have a base and can enjoy all the facilities the resort has to offer. Tours are offered to seven different mountain peaks near the resort, meaning that you can spend a whole week at the resort and have a new mountain to ski up and down every day. Those who are not as keen on ski touring can spend the days relaxing in the sauna, going dog sledding and enjoying delicious food made from local ingredients at the resort’s restaurant. The best time for ski touring is from around mid-March to early June, depending on how early spring comes in the mountains. In March, the days quickly become longer, and from midMay it’s light virtually around the clock. From late May, the sun stays above the horizon until the end of July.

TASTING EXPERIENCE Order a guided tasting experience from the world’s northernmost distillery – Aurora Spirit. You will learn about making first-class alcohol north of the Arctic Circle and the experience includes tasting. Local tastes and interesting facts are guaranteed! You will gain an insight into the mythical past of Viking drinking customs and learn about hightech alcohol production at the top of the world. During this exciting, guided tasting experience, you will see, feel and smell the Arctic ingredients that are used in the production of Bivrost. There are two different tasting experiences:

1. Learn about aquavit, the Norwegian

national spirit, a distinctly Norwegian product that we have had a tradition in Norway for many centuries. The alcohol is based on caraway and dill and is usually stored in oak barrels for more than six months. You will receive an introduction to the history of aquavit and get to taste four different varieties aquavit, each with its own distinctive character.

2. Taste your way through the history of

the world’s northernmost distillery. Hear the fascinating story about the creation of the Aurora Spirit distillery. During the storytelling, you will get to taste four different alcohols – gin, whisky, aquavit and vodka – each with its own story.

We have two new jet skis that can be rented by conta cting the reception resort or by advance booking. Use of dry suits/wetsuits and life jackets is included in the rental price.

NOTE: The person driving the jet ski must be born before 1980 or have passed the boatman’s test or equivalent international certificate.

JET SKI, WATER SKIING AND RING

Whiz across the fjord on water skis or an inflatable ring or experience the nature on one of our jet skis. We have combined all these experiences in one exciting package that can be booked in advance. You get about 30 minutes per activity and, including instructions and changing from one to another, the full activity lasts for two hours. You also have the option of booking just one or two of the activities. In this case, you pay for the use of the boat to tow the water skis.

STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING

Stand up paddleboarding, often called SUP, has been a popular abroad. It has now taken Norway by storm and SUP boards are now available for rent at Ma langen Resort. When using a SUP board, you stand upright with your face and body facing forward. If you have not tried paddleboarding before, we recommend starting on your knees while getting used to the board and then standing up when you are ready. FISHING TRIPS AND BOAT RENTAL Malangen is popular fjord for fishing and, if you’re lucky, you can catch a variety of fish species. The most common are cod and saithe, while there are flounder and halibut near the bottom. It’s also possible to catch sea trout and the occasional salmon. The open aluminium boat can be rented at the resort with or without guide. Although there is space for up to six people, we recommend having no more than four adults on board. For

guests with knowledge of boats, this is a golden opportunity to have a peaceful time at sea on your own or with others while trying to catch the “big one”. BIKE RENTAL

The area around the resort is ideal for bike rides, including a slightly hilly area that extends quite some distance inland. There are miles of roads to explore in sheltered and beautiful surroundings. You will enco unter very little traffic but plenty of farms and cultural landscapes. Guests who don’t bring their own bikes can rent one at the resort. We have three bikes available for rent. The rental price is NOK 295 per bike for up to four hours. Ask at the reception for a simple printed map showing the best biking routes.

FULL-DAY SEA KAYAKING TOUR Kayaking in Northern Norway is an unforgettable experience. This is a naturebased activity that allows you to appreciate the landscape from a different perspective. If you are lucky, you will spot a pod of porpoises swimming past or a white-tailed eagle hovering above while searching for fish. This tour is a good option for people wishing to spend a full day kayaking and who have the fitness to cover longer distances. We can paddle up to 20-25 km on this tour. Before setting off, the guide will teach you basic paddling techniques and provide safety instructions. The kayaking route will be chosen based on the prevailing weather conditions and the level of the participants. In some cases, a short transfer by car will be required. We will stop for a break during the tour and serve a light meal and hot drinks around an open fire.

A HIKER'S PARADISE The Malangen fjord is surrounded by majestic mountains. Some of them, such as Bentsjordtinden, rise more than 1,100 metres above the fjord. However, given the local topography, there are summit hikes to suit all levels. Some prefer a short afternoon hike with the children up to the nearest vantage point, while others wish to spend the entire day hiking in the mountains and reach the summit of the highest mountains on the map.

FULL-DAY HIKING TOUR On our full-day hiking tour, you will reach the summit of some of the most scenic mountains on the Malangen Peninsula and be rewarded with spectacular views of two fjords –Malangen and Balsfjord. The route starts in a beautiful native birch and pine forest. Once you pass the tree line at an altitude of 300-400 m, you will start to appreciate the spectacular views. The summits in the Malangen area are 800-1,200 m above the sea level and the higher you go the more spectacular the view. When you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with 360° panoramic views of the Malangen Peninsula and the mountain ranges in the surrounding area. During the hike, it’s often possible to catch a glimpse of animals that live in Northern Norway like the reindeer, moose and golden eagle. The hikes to the top of the mountains are demanding and require a high level of fitness. Appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn. Some routes involve a climb of up to 1,000

HALF-DAY HIKING TOUR We invite you to explore the countryside and mountains of the Malangen area and experience the real Norwegian outdoor lifestyle. Our half-day hiking tour is an easy hike up the hills of the Malangen Peninsula. Above the tree line, you will enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding fjords.

AURORA AUTUMN SEASON: 1 September - 30 November Some believe that the Northern Lights are at their most beautiful in September and October. On clear evenings, you can experience Aurora Borealis in relatively mild weather (above zero) without light pollution at our exclusive Northern Lights camp – Camp Nikka. Autumn is an excellent time to visit Malangen Resort. You will get the best of winter with good chances of experiencing the Northern Lights combined with the best of autumn with crystal clear days, beautiful autumn colours, mountain hikes on foot and pure fresh mountain air. In September, all the summer services are available, such as jet skis. Guests can also book the services Northern Lights Watch and Sami Culture. TRADITIONAL WOODEN CHURCH Malangen Church is situated in a rural setting in the village of Mortenhals, an eight-minute drive from Malangen Resort. The church, which dates to 1853, was designed and built by locals. The well-kept wooden church was built in traditional long church style and can seat 280 people. The wedding ceremony can also be held at a choice of scenic venues at Malangen Resort: inside with panoramic views, outside on the large wooden terrace, on the pier quay or at Camp Nikka, our wilderness camp on the shores of the idyllic Nikkavannet, which is a 15-minute walk from the resort. 55
