QUEEN’S PARK RALLY RAISES CONCERNS

West Nile diagnosis in Thornhill Woman, 54, lives in Yonge, John streets area

A 54-year-old Markham woman has been reported as the region’s first probable human case of West Nile virus this year. The woman has flu-like symptoms and is recovering at home, near Yonge and John streets in Thornhill, Joe La Marca, York’s director of health protection said Wednesday. Mr. La Marca said while they were notified of her first preliminary test results Aug. 11, officials are still trying to determine when and where she may have contracted the virus, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

A wave of concern is flooding Queen’s Park following a decision to allow a controversial Muslim rally, known as International Day of Al-Quds, to be held Saturday on legislative grounds. Thornhill Tory MP Peter Kent and Progressive Conservative MPP Peter Shurman are leading the calls of condemnation, accusing the Islamic group of using Ontario’s government buildings to propagate hatred. Canadian Jewish groups have also called on the McGuinty government to stop the rally to commemorate Al-Quds day, which was started by Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 to protest the “occupation of Palestine by the racist and illegal Zionist regime”.

TRAP IN YARD A roaming mosquito trap has been put in her back yard and officials are looking for standing water in a 2-kilometre radius of her house, Mr. La Marca said. There are 37 regular mosquito traps placed throughout the region. So far this year, 20 mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus, including in Newmarket, Vaughan, East Gwillimbury, King, Richmond Hill and Markham. York has not experienced rates of positive mosquito pools this high since 2006. Previously, there have been two

‘ANTI-SEMITIC RHETORIC’ Other groups are stepping forward to raise concerns, including the Canadian Race Relations Foundation which, in a statement Tuesday, accused speakers at previous rallies of spouting “virulently anti-Semitic rhetoric labelling Israel ‘a cancer’ and the Zionists as ‘parasitic’ and ‘blood-suckers’”. According to freealquds.org, similar events are scheduled across the United States, in London, England and other cities in Canada, including Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa and Edmonton. Toronto’s rally is set for Saturday afternoon, starting at Queen’s Park and marching to the U.S. consulate at University Avenue. Richmond Hill Liberal MPP Reza Moridi, who is of Iranian descent and whose constituency includes a large Iranian population, has also received calls about the rally, executive assistant Niloo Boroun said, but because it has been approved by the province’s sergeant-at-arms “there’s not much more we can do” other than rely on authorities to keep an eye on the event. Sergeant-at-Arms Dennis Clark said it is “very, very, very rare” for Queen’s Park to deny an application for an See COUNTER, page 10.

As summer holidays wind down, you may wonder if you need to make alternate care arrangements for your children in case of work action by some teachers. But the York Region District School Board and Elementary Teachers Federation remain optimistic. “The only job action that would be taken in September is if (Premier Dalton) McGuinty tries to pass legislation overturning our collective agreements,” Elementary Teachers Federation president David Clegg said. “If he thinks he can legislate good will, he is mistaken.” The federation has publicly stated it will protest such legislation. The Liberal government is urging all Ontario school boards to reach agreements with local teachers and support staff before Sept. 1 to comply with the province’s fiscal plan. However, the province is prepared to introduce legislation if school board trustees are unwilling or unable to negotiate

and sign local agreements. The school board and federation have dates set in September to continue negotiations regarding the collective agreement. Negotiations have been positive and productive, Mr. Clegg said. Last week, the province reached a deal with Franco-Ontarian teachers on a twoyear agreement similar to the one signed by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association earlier this summer.

THE DEAL • Zero-per-cent salary increases until 2014 • A 1.5-per-cent pay cut in the form of three professional development days for all teachers so younger teachers will continue to move through the grid • Restructuring the grid looking to long-term, sustainable savings • Elimination of the current payout for unused sick days upon retirement • Reworking the short-term sick leave plan to include up to 10 sick days.

Idea for book sprang from counselling session BY KIM ZARZOUR

child care.” This may be because women are better at multi-tasking or interrupted-tasking, or men are just driven by different motives. Men may not see what needs doing or be willfully blind, she says. “If there was a dead dog on the couch and my husband wanted to watch the football game, he would move the moldering mastiff to one end and sit down at the other.” While studies show men putting in more hours at their day jobs, women do more work at home. Because that’s where the husband and wife spend most of their time together, Ms Dimerman says, the imbalance hurts the marriage, creating “a tilt that makes love slide right out of the picture”.

kzarzour@yrmg.com

The epiphany came to Sara Dimerman while she was counselling one of the couples seeking her marital help. The wife was describing her resentment over doing most of the household chores, family organizing, social co-ordinating and child rearing. Then she raised the issue of sex. Or lack of. The couple hadn’t hit the hay in years. “Well, of course you haven’t,” Ms Dimerman said. “How can you be his lover, when you’re too busy being his mother?” The wife burst out in laughter and later, tears of relief at the recognition of her role. The husband took a little longer to come around, but he soon realized that this dynamic wasn’t doing him any good either. He wanted his lover back. And Ms Dimerman, a Thornhill counsellor and parenting expert, realized she’d hit on the crux of the problem for a vast number of marriages in distress.

Thornhill parenting columnist Sara Dimerman and writing partner J. M Kearns have written a book on marriage and how becoming equal partners in domestic and child-rearing chores can put the fun back in the bedroom. She’s appearing this week on numerous radio and TV talk shows in advance of her book launch in Toronto this weekend.

‘Times have changed, but roles at home have not.’ While media plays up statistics showing men are doing more of the household duties than ever before, most research shows women are still stuck with the lion’s share of the work, even if they work outside their home and this, Ms Dimerman says, breeds resentment — and torpedoes romance. Parent of two girls, author, and columnist — her parenting columns are regularly featured in The Liberal — Ms Dimerman decided to write a book on the topic in collaboration with fellow author J. M. Kearns. She and Mr. Kearns will discuss their newly published book, How Can I Be Your Lover When I’m Too Busy Being Your Mother? The Answer to Becoming Partners Again, at the official launch this weekend at Indigo Yorkdale. The book is getting national

print exposure and she’s doing interviews this week on radio and morning TV shows. The book looks at the maternal roles women play in a marriage — including caregiver, cleaning lady, schedule keeper and cook — how those roles came to be (tradition, upbringing and gender stereotypes) and provides steps to help couples get back to being equal partners again. It also explains that statistics, showing modern men and women share household duties, don’t tell

the whole story. It was much simpler in the days of the popular TV show Leave it to Beaver, when men and women knew their roles, Ms Dimerman says. “Times have changed, but roles at home have not. “What the data tells us is that women are still doing two-thirds of the homemaking, and if you look at the ‘core tasks’, which are unrelenting and non-glamourous, the amount is three-quarters or more. They’re also doing two-thirds of the

‘Women are still doing two-thirds of the homemaking, and also two-thirds of the child care. ... It is the heart of a lot of crises in a lot of marriages today.’ As the wife shoulders the load and struggles to get her husband on board, hubby feels disrespected, bossed around and out of the loop. Soon, all the fun and passion has slipped away. “It is the heart of a lot of crises in a lot of marriages today,” she says. Once men make the connection between domestic tension and trouble in the bedroom, they realize there’s a huge reward in getting their partners back, she says. Women, too, have work to do. Sometimes, they have to let go of their role as “gatekeeper” and give up control over household standards because getting the results you want just isn’t worth the price. The final section of the book provides a guide to negotiate, in a blame-free way, a re-balancing

WEEKEND PROFILE

of spousal contributions and a return to team partnership. Writing the book was a twoyear labour of love, Ms Dimerman says. While she and her co-author, who lives in New Jersey, have only met once, they used e-mail and phone calls to share “edgy, honest and sometimes hilarious conversations” and in the process, helped their own marriages. Mr. Kearns says he learned how to become a better spouse. “Every marriage is a work in progress,” he says. “It can easily slip off course, but people can steer it back if they see the way.” Ms Dimerman dedicated the book to her mother, Sue Freeman, who passed away while she was writing it. Her mother was a huge inspiration, she says, and her marriage with Ms Dimerman’s father a clear example of the lover-mother theme. “I had seen my mother in the role of mother to my father for their 50 years of marriage.” Aside from its crippling effects on their relationship, she also saw the devastating effects that losing a wife/mother had on her father and his struggle to “grow up” now that she’s gone. While many of the anecdotes in the book come from her own 26-year marriage to her husband Joey, Ms Dimerman says she knows now, more than ever, how to grow their partnership so they can always feel like equals. The book is available at Indigo via chapters.indigo.ca and also on amazon. com

Time for corner store liquor sales Booze is business. Big business in Ontario. The LCBO added $1.6 billion to Ontario’s coffers last year, so it’s no wonder the Liberal government has approved a 70-outlet expansion, costing $100 million, over the next two years. The Progressive Conservatives are, instead, calling on the Liberals to share the love and allow convenience stores to sell beer and wine. It’s a move to which most consumers would say cheers — more than 112,000 signed an Ontario Convenience Stores Association petition favouring the idea and a new Angus Reid poll indicates two of three Ontarians favour buying beer and wine at the corner store. Yet, despite the apparent support of consumers for change to the liquor laws that date back to the 1930s, Premier Dalton McGuinty was quick to put a cork in the idea, insisting the LCBO is doing a good job preventing minors from buying alcohol. Are our kids are going to become drooling, staggering alcoholics without the benevolent intervention of the LCBO and Premier Dad? The reality is a majority of our

teenaged minors are drinking alcohol. The convenience stores association insists individual owners do a better job of turning away ineligible buyers of age-restricted products than do the LCBO or The Beer Store and has studies to back it up. The Ontarians who want the convenience of having beer and wine available at the local store will also want to see it sold responsibly, under the same stringent — or even stricter — rules followed by the LCBO, including proof of age for all purchases, It’s working in the 214 Ontario stores already selling alcohol in communities too small for a regular LCBO outlet or Beer Store. Bottom line, selling alcohol is a business and it’s wrong for the Liberals to be coy about its true motivation to maintain — and expand — the status quo. Only 5 per cent of those polled in the Angus Reid survey were aware the Beer Store is not publicly owned like the LCBO, but operated by foreign multinational alcohol distributors. In today’s economy, why shouldn’t some of the profits of beer sales remain in our province?

World without cars? Maybe on my own island “Resolved: That the running of horseless carriages be prohibited within the limits of the village of Mackinac.” — Mackinac Island, Michigan, Village Council, July 6, 1898. o you ever wonder what it would really be like to live in a place where there are no cars? Just bicycles, people on foot and maybe a better use of boats along the shoreline to get around? It’s this kind of utopian ideal that many envision for pockets of downtown Toronto, or main streets in the towns that surround the big city (minus the boats, of course, although the way it’s been raining as I write this, you never know). You’d like to get an idea of how this would work but examples — short of going to a continent where the car is not ubiquitous thanks to basic poverty — are few and far between. I was lucky enough to go to a place where cars aren’t king over my summer vacation. It was fun for this tourist and fascinating from the perspective of the car-less society. Mackinac Island, which is in Lake Huron, has lived apparently quite

D

Bernie O’Neill happily under an automobile ban since the early 1900s. The only acceptable modes of transportation other than good old shoe power are bicycles — of which there are hundreds for rent — and horses, whose calling cards add a certain odiferous quality to the air in the town core. (You do get used to it. Just think of it as “horse exhaust”, which can clear your sinuses.) The horses, which are raised on the island, are pretty hard working, pulling everything from carriages filled with people to UPS courier wagons to big wagons collecting the garbage along the main streets,

which are lined with fudge shops, restaurants and retail stores. The day we were there, after arriving by passenger ferry from St. Ignace, the temperatures were definitely on the warm side, so the horses were getting plenty of water and moving at a pretty slow pace. The real way to get around, though, was by bicycle. We rented bikes for just $6 an hour. Mine was a Trek, one of the most comfortable two-wheelers I’ve ever ridden. It was an upright thing with padded seat that the rental guy picked out, no doubt using a mental checklist. (Old guy? Check. Doesn’t ride bikes much? Check. Back problems every six months? Check.) It took us an hour-and-a-half to ride around the paved road on the perimeter of the island, which includes a state park, and my legs, back and behind hardly felt a thing. The funny thing was that it took me a while to relax and realize that no, a car was not coming up behind me on my left. No need to keep looking over my shoulder. No need to keep listening for that infernal combustion engine that never came. I can enjoy the scenery: trees, peb-

ble beaches, clear water, fresh, horsefree air and beautiful old homes. Meanwhile, there was much civility among us cyclists, who made way for each other and passed with care. Maybe it’s because we were tourists. But maybe it was because the bicycle is more human in scale and, without cars around, everyone was relaxed and not in fear for their lives. Could this type of thing be replicated here in York Region? I know it’s unlikely. The advantage of the island is that it’s cut off from the world of cars by a sizable body of water, meaning an automobile ban can be enforced. But there is a beauty to the whole place that seems worth trying to replicate, even in an urban setting. To me, it’s not bike lanes beside roadways but rather bicycle paths through parks and forests, completely separated from cars, that are our best hope — something our towns and cities are working on now, at great cost and with sometimes mixed results. Although perhaps, after 100 years of automobiles, the horse is already out of the barn, so to speak, and only digging a moat around an entire town could keep the cars away.

Stabbing suspect in court BY JOE FANTAUZZI

jfantauzzi@yrmg.com

A man charged in a stabbing at a Markham high school in early June appeared in court yesterday. York Regional Police were called to Unionville High School, at 201 Town Centre Blvd., near Hwy. 7, at about 3:25 p.m. June 6. A 17-year-old male student was accosted by a group of people and stabbed, police said. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. A Markham man, 20, was arrested July 11 and charged with assault with

a weapon, Const. Blair McQuillan said. The man was before the courts for pre-trial appearances this week, Const. McQuillan said. A large group of young people were outside the school when the attack occurred. Meetings with staff to discuss increased vigilance followed the stabbing at the school, a York Region District School Board spokesperson said. Information about what sparked the incident was not available from police. — with files from L.H. Tiffany Hsieh

Dancer seeks votes to join Raptors Pak A Markham resident is moving from centre stage to stomping on the hardwood. Last month, Jamie Hoffeldt, 23, outdanced some 200 other girls vying for the last spot on the Raptors Dance Pak. And now it’s up to you to vote for your favourite Pak dancer through the Pick the Pak contest. “We’re out there dancing for (the fans),” said the recent University of Western Ontario kinesiology grad. “This is how they can get involved.” Dancer profiles, pictures

JAMIE HOFFELDT: Dancer hopes to be pick of pack for Raptors. and signature dance moves are posted online. The dancer with the most votes will become the latest dancer for the 2012-2013 dance squad.

Dancing in front of thousands isn’t new to this lifelong dancer. For the past two years, Ms Hoffeldt has danced as part of the Western Dance Pak, which became the dance team for the London Lightning Bolts, a basketball team. In her first year with the newly formed squad, Ms Hoffeldt served as team captain and went on to co-coach the team this past season. “You’re not really dancing for the fans,” she said. “But with them. Our job is to make them cheer harder for the home team.” To pick your favourite Pak dancer, visit pickthepak.raptorslivingthegame.com

event. “It has to do with, we don’t censure.” He said has been deluged with calls about the event. “You would not believe it. It has just been steady,” he said. “We had calls last year, but it seems as if there is more of an interest this year.” Mr. Kent said he is especially concerned that Queen’s Park authorities won’t reveal the identity of the sponsor or organizations that have been granted a permit to hold the rally. The province keeps that information confidential, Mr. Clark said. “It’s a privacy thing.” The “Al-Quds Rally Toronto” Facebook site, arranging bus transportation to Queen’s Park from seven locations in southern Ontario, includes two in York Region — the Islamic Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaat on Bathurst Street in Thornhill and Islamic Society of York Region in Gormley. E-mails to the Al-Quds committee website were not returned and a phone call to York Region’s Islamic society netted no information about what is planned. After grilling the reporter about who owns York Region Media Group, the person who answered the phone at the Islamic society suggested speaking with organizers, but did not answer queries about who the organizers are. When asked to confirm bus transportation to Queen’s Park, the person hung up. YouTube videos of last year’s rally, which Mr. Walker says attracted 300 to 400 people, show protesters with pictures of Khomeini and waving flags for Hezbollah, which is listed as a terrorist organization under Canadian law. A video on YouTube shows Zafar Bangash, president of

ZAFAR BANGASH: President of the York Region Islamic Society made controversial statements at last year’s rally. the York Region Islamic Society, criticizing U.S. President Obama, “this black man in the White House” who can’t say no to “Zionist parasites”. The controversial imam brought Newmarket into the international spotlight five years ago when he led efforts to open a “brother mosque” for the York Region society. It is now operating on Mulock Drive. In the video from last year’s rally, he tells a mostly male crowd that Muslims do not hate Jews and Iran is not anti-Semitic and promises Palestine will be liberated with everyone treated equally under Islamic law. “Brothers and sisters, mark my words. The day is getting near. Just as the apartheid state of South Africa was dismantled, we will see the apartheid state of Israel also being dismantled. “We will not be intimidated by anybody, whether it is the government of Canada, or anybody else.” Chris Yaccato, executive assistant to the Speaker of the House, said he understands Queen’s Park security services won’t permit Hezbollah flags “or any signs promot-

ing known terrorist organizations” during this year’s rally. “If they do, we’ll have to shut it down.” Discussion on the rally’s Facebook page urged followers to bring pictures of their leaders, such as the Ayatollah, instead, and consider that the controversial flags are only banned on legislative grounds. “Do what you will with this information =)” one poster said. Queen’s Park works in concert with Toronto police to determine what flags or placards qualify as offensive or hate crime materials, Mr. Clark said. The challenge with large groups, he said, is “as soon as we take one [flag] down, others can put them up ... Our paramount concern is public safety ... We do meet and talk over policy and guidelines”. Any problems will be dealt with as the event unfolds, he said. Meanwhile, the Jewish Defence League of Canada plans to hold a counter protest “to expose and confront the Al-Quds Day terror supporters”. Sayeh Hassan, an Iranian refugee, lawyer and prodemocracy activist, said this weekend’s rally should be of concern to every Canadian. “It’s not about freedom of speech but a dictator regime being able to come here and so freely spread its hateful propaganda,” she said. “Imagine how it feels for those people who have fled to Canada to save their lives” seeing pictures of Khomeni and hearing his messages spread on Ontario legislative grounds. Mr. Shurman agreed. “It is especially disturbing that [Queen’s Park], which stands as a symbol of democracy and human rights, rights which Ontarians have fought and died for, could be used as a platform to incite hatred.”

Man robbed in underground garage York Regional Police are seeking public assistance in identifying three suspects following a robbery in Thornhill. On Monday at around 2 p.m., three men approached another man while he was seated in his vehicle in an underground parking garage at 7378 Yonge St., near Clark Avenue. The trio broke three of the vehicle’s side windows and removed a bag containing a quantity of cash from the front passenger seat. The driver had just obtained the cash from a nearby currency exchange business. The thieves fled in a grey minivan. The first man is described as white with a medium build, 25, 5 ft. 5 in. tall with blond or light brown hair, unshaven. He was wearing a dark-coloured hooded sweatshirt. There are no descriptions for the two

other thieves. The victim received minor injuries and was treated by EMS at the scene. The investigation is ongoing and police are asking witnesses to come forward. Investigators from the hold-up unit remind the public that if you find yourself the victim of a robbery, be sure to co-operate with suspects and do not engage in a physical confrontation. Remember everything you can about the offender. A good description of a suspect is a valuable tool for investigators, police say.

POLICE

20 still sought in staged crash investigation ‘Victims are all of us honest Ontario drivers’ BY SIMON MARTIN

smartin@yrmg.com Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police hold-up unit at 1-866-876- 5423, ext. 6630, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com or text your tip to CRIMES (274637) starting with the word YORK.

The York Regional Police major fraud unit has made major inroads in a staged collision operation in York Region. As part of Project Sideswipe, investigators made 46 arrests and are still tracking 20 other suspects. Charges include conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, fraud under $5,000, fraud over $5,000 and obstruct police officer. The police service launched the investigation in March after the Insurance Bureau of Canada conducted an investigation into nine staged collisions in Vaughan. In two years of investigating insurance fraud, Det.-Const. Kim Tanczos said she hasn’t seen anything of this magnitude. People were recruited by an orchestrater to either be a driver or passenger in staged collisions, she said. The cars used were often old and some were in an irreparable state. When the drivers went to the police, they would say they were the only occupant in the car to avoid investigation, but would tell the insurance company the next day there were five passengers or, in one case, seven,

she said. The drivers and passengers would then file false injury claims, police said. All injury claims related to soft tissue, Det.Const. Tanczos said. The claims were made for services never rendered through rehabilitation facilities, where doctors’ signatures and information were fraudulently used, according to police. “We applaud York Regional Police’s commitment to the case, insurance bureau investigative services vice-president Richard Dubin said. “(The victims) are all of us honest Ontario drivers. The operation is typical of the massive insurance fraud that exists in Ontario, Mr. Dubin said, adding a conservative estimate from KPMG has insurance fraud costing Ontarians from $700 million to $1.3 billion every year. The next step in the investigation is to more deeply probe the people responsible at the second level, where the suspects sought treatment and people actual directed the insurance claims, Insp. Keith Merith said. “We expect to have good results, he added.

COMMUNITY: Similar path eyed in Thornhill

New trail construction could begin next summer BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

Markham is one step closer to building a path that leads residents from Toogood Pond to the Rouge River valley. Currently, the city’s plan to construct a path from Toogood Pond though Milne Dam Conservation Park to Bob Hunter Memorial Park is at the final stage of the environmental assessment process and awaiting the end of the required public comment period. Once given the official OK from the province at the end of the month, the city’s next step is to hire a consultant to establish trail design details. The environmental assessment outlines a preferred alignment through seven areas, which includes building about 10 new pedestrian bridges. The total cost of building a linkage path is about $6 million and can extend over the next 10 years, the city’s engineer director Alan Brown said. But construction would be completed in phases, with the first phase costing about $2.5 million. And if the environmental assessment process is on track, construction could start next summer, he added. Once the design phase is complete, city staff are expected to bring a report back to council in early 2013 outlining the most fea-

sible and inexpensive place to start construction on the path. The plan is to establish a main pathway that will act as a linkage to other existing trails within the city as well as match up with a newly established trail system, set up by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Mr. Bown said. “This is a strong council initiative with large public demand,” he said. “But there is still a lot of work to do.” This trail will serve as one of the city’s backbone paths leading to and connecting existing trails, neighbourhoods and destinations. During the planning process, city staff met with more than 20 local groups, including local ratepayers or community associations, cycling and pedestrian advisory and accessibility advisory committees. There are still outstanding issues, such as parking, signage, navigation along the path, waste receptacles and pedestrian or cyclist safety. But those will be determined during the design phase, Mr. Brown said. The city is also considering starting the environmental assessment process for similar paths in Milliken Mills and Thornhill. The last day to make comments or pose objections is Aug. 27. For more information, visit markham.ca Join the conversation. Follow @AmandaPersico on Twitter.

Housing market to cool off: report BY L.H. TIFFANY HSIEH

thsieh@yrmg.com

Housing activities in York Region and much of the southern Ontario can be expected to cool over the rest of this year and into the next, according to a housing outlook report released Tuesday. Existing home sales will decrease for the rest of the year as tighter mortgage market conditions dampen consumer demand, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) predicted. In the resale housing market, CMHC forecasted the number of real estate transactions in the GTA will drop to 88,000 in 2013 from this year’s 91,500. That being said, the average sold price is expected to rise to $502,000 in 2013 from this year’s $499,000. The report also indicated a declining trend in new construction of single-detached homes and condos in the GTA. Highrise construction activity is predicted to drop by about 27 per cent, from 35,000 units this year to 25,600 in 2013. An improving job market and low interest rates should help existing home sales remain near recent year highs in 2013, the report said.

No one injured as fire guts Thornhill home BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

All that remains of a house fire on Clark Avenue are a couple of charred brick walls, a chandelier in the front room of the split level home and a garden gnome untouched by the flames that engulfed the home Monday night. The garden gnome looks on at the outer metal shell of what was once a silver minivan on the driveway. Beyond that are remnants of a fridge in what used to be the garage. “They are a hard working family,” said Dieter Sems, a neighbour who watched flames consume the home at 62 Clark Ave. on the Markham side of Thornhill. The family used to have a booth at the York Farmers Market, around the corner on Yonge Street, Mr. Sems said. “They made the best veal cutlets,” he said. “They used the fridge in the garage to prep for the market.” Mr. Sems was returning home when he noticed thick black smoke streaming from the home across the road. “When I turned (on Clark Avenue) it smelled like a fantastic barbecue,” he said. Walking near the home, the air still smells charred.

Flames engulf Clark Avenue home Monday afternoon. No one was injured in the blaze. Four children and two adults escaped without injury after their the home burst into flames. Markham fire crews responded to the call on Clark Avenue at about

3 p.m, Monday and the home was already engulfed by the time crews arrived, Markham Fire and Emergency Services’ David Blizzard said.

“The fire was fully involved,” he said. “There was heavy smoke and dark flames.” Six fire trucks carrying more than 30 firefighters extinguished

the fire. But Mr. Sems isn’t impressed with how firefighters handled the call. “I’m happy everyone got out and no one is hurt,” he said. “But I’m not very happy with the fire department.” Rumours spread in the tight-knit community that firefighters went to the Vaughan side of Thornhill on the west side of Yonge Street. He stood watch for what felt like several minutes before water doused the home. “(Firefighters) could have saved the van and part of the house,” he said. “Every second is important. Seeing the power of the water, that fire could have been out in no time.” Fire crews, “absolutely, did not” go to the wrong address, Deputy Fire Chief Phil Alexander said. Residents might have been confused, he said, since one of the trucks came in from the opposite direction along Clark Avenue after collecting water from another hydrant, he said. That was after trucks were already on the scene fighting the fire. The family is staying with extended family as fire officials continue with their investigation. Cause of the fire is still unknown while damages are estimated to be about $600,000, Mr. Blizzard said.

Orientation Week helps students who are new to Canada transition to school life BY KIM ZARZOUR

kzarzour@yrmg.com

Coming to a new country can be a scary experience. Just ask Kate Beliba and Haruka Yuen. The two York Region youth remember loneliness, fear and tears when they immigrated to Canada. “It was really bad,” recalls Miss Yuen. “The first year I had no one helping me, no friends. I cried every day. “Because I had limited English skills, could only say simple words, other students would say ‘she doesn’t know English; better not talk to her’. So I just read books, did homework, stayed in the library by myself.” Miss Beliba says her move to Canada, with her mother and brother, was a dream come true, but she was still fearful. “I was crying before I left. As a kid, you don’t understand this is for your own good.” Today, the youth are happily enmeshed in Canadian life and hoping to help others following in their footsteps. They are volunteering with a program to ease the transition of new families to York Region schools. Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) is an intensive, three-day

A similar, one-day orientation, Welcome and Information for Newcomers, is geared to newcomer families in elementary schools. This week, peer leaders — fellow students who were newcomers in previous years and who speak a variety of languages — are being trained to help out at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School in Thornhill. Next week, the NOW program will be held at Unionville High School and Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy and at

They are provided by Settlement and Education Partnership York Region with Catholic Community Services of York Region in partnership with York Region District School Board, York Catholic District School Board and Citizenship and Immigration Canada. “Students arrive in summer and everything’s new,” said Eileen Wan, assistant co-ordinator. “There is the language barrier. They’ve lost their friends, and they’re basically on their own.” The key, she said, is building relationships. Newcomer programs include scavenger hunts to learn about the school environment, skits to talk abou challenges of starting at a new school and how to manage changes, plus other games. Information on graduation requirements, school rules and extra-curricular activities are also provided. The elementary program invites students and parents to take work-

Miss Beliba, 15, said the programs helped her and her brother in their family’s transition from the Ukraine to Thornhill three years ago, and now she wishes to give back.
