Giller prize author in Thornhill Vincent Lam helps kick off reading event By Kim Zarzour

kzarzour@yrmg.com

Summertime is the perfect time to kick back with a good book. It’s also a great time to get to know your neighbours. You can do both, starting this weekend, with the launch of Markham’s first One book, One Markham initiative. It’s a community reading and discussion program that encourages all residents to read the same books at the same time — a kind of city-wide book club — with acclaimed author Vincent Lam’s books serving the opening round. Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, a Giller prize winner, and The Headmaster’s Wager, his latest novel, were chosen for their insights into motivation, emotion and cultural diversity, said Leah See ACTIVITIES, page 24.

Co-op takes bite out of termites $1 million earmarked in battle against problem eating away at townhouse complex now owned by region By L.H. Tiffany Hsieh

thsieh@yrmg.com

A 10-year termite infestation at

xone of York Region’s public housing projects could be terminated this

year, if a $1.1-million project that’s about to begin succeeds. “This is large,” said York Region technical services, community and health services manager Kevin

McCann. “This should be longerlasting, hopefully permanent.” The infestation has continued at Thornhill Green in Markham for at least 10 years, despite several

treatments during that time. To ensure full effectiveness this time, about 25 trees and all woodSee TREES, page 18.

Thornhill student is York Region’s top scholar By Teresa Latchford

tlatchford@yrmg.com

St. Robert Catholic High School’s Stephanie Gaglione is York Region’s top scholar for 2011-12. Graduating from the international baccalaureate diploma program at the Thornhill school, Ms Gaglione achieved a 99.67-percent average in her top six Grade 12 courses. This summer, she will be wrapping up a year-long project on cholesterol levels in humans she has been helping to conduct at the Hospital for Sick Children as part of her international baccalaureate studies. She hopes to fit in her annual canoe trip to Algonquin Park before starting the engineering program at the University of Toronto in the fall. “It’s great working with so many other highly motivated students who deeply care about the quality

of their work,” she said. “The lab components of the (international baccalaureate) program, as well as the outside-of-school components, gave the opportunity to experience things I wouldn’t have tried otherwise.” Ms Gaglione’s academic success is only one aspect of what makes her an excellent student, St. Robert principal Jennifer Sarna said. Her enthusiasm for learning, everpresent smile, positive attitude and willingness to reach out and help others are a winning combination. The recent graduate dedicated herself to her studies and gave up both piano and competitive figure skating, but kept her part-time job as a swim instructor with the City of Vaughan. She was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and an award-winning member of the debate team. The busy student also found

time to participate on the school’s track and field, cross-country and ski teams. She was a member of the social justice and environmental clubs and had a hand in the University of Toronto’s mentorship program, where she helped design green roofs. Alexander Mackenzie High School’s Graeme Baker is the region’s second top scholar, earning an average of 99.5 per cent. Despite what some may think, Mr. Baker said he didn’t study everyday, all the time, but when he did, he studied hard and efficiently. All work and no play isn’t very balanced and he found the perfect combination of schoolwork, extracurricular activities and social events. “It definitely feels good to be recognized for my achievements,” he said. “The response I have gotten really validates all the hard

STEPHANIE GAGLIONE: St. Robert High student graduated with 99.67 average. work I have been doing.” Next year, he will study engineering at Queen’s University and hopes his current practice will yield the same results.

Teach children to be water smart Recent polling shows despite significant water safety education and awareness programming, there’s still a gap in our behaviour around water. The first long weekend of the summer appeared to prove that point, with seven people believed to have drowned. Although the Canadian Red Cross and others emphasize the need for water safety education and swimming lessons for children, the Canada Day weekend’s victims were all adults, ranging in age from 19 to 79. According to the Canadian Red Cross, each year an average of 400 Canadians drown, more than half during summer. And of the 160 people who drown while boating each year, nearly 90 per cent aren’t properly wearing a lifejacket, according to the Red Cross. Other Red Cross findings include: • Only 46 per cent of children know how to swim; • For 51 per cent of Canadians, “not allowing children under 10 to access the pool area” is their only strategy to prevent injuries related to back yard pools; • While 82 per cent of Canadians believe there’s a legal requirement to wear a lifejacket when boating, only 50 per cent of boat owners always wear their lifejacket;

• Fourteen per cent of Canadians keep lifejackets on the boat, believing they will have time to find and put on a lifejacket while falling out of the boat. Alcohol consumption is another factor that far too often plays a role in adult drownings. You’d think people would know by now that drinking and boating don’t mix. York Region offers lots of access to fresh water. Also, private swimming pools abound. Which is why every family should consider it a responsibility to teach their children not only how to swim, but how to be safe around the water. Meanwhile, anyone who has taken the boater safety exam will tell you that, while there are hundreds of regulations one might be expected to know when operating a motorboat on Ontario’s waterways, the two most important things you can do when operating a boat are to wear your life jacket and avoid alcohol. Save the beer and coolers for when you are safely on shore and expect to stay there. While summer and activities on or near water will always go hand in hand, the recent deaths are a reminder of how failing to be water smart can have tragic consequences.

It’s tough love time for teachers, Premier Dad

I

feel for you, Premier Dad. You spoil them rotten, giving them practically everything they ask for — in my case, that means constantly handing out money to the kids for movies and the mall; driving them all over at all hours of the day and night and/or allowing them to drive the car, full of gas I paid for; buying $90 sweatpants and $200 slouchy boots, fancy phones and laptops; and forking out for countless sports tournament trips and vacations to warm climates. In your case, that means giving teachers a 12-per-cent wage increase over four years in 2008, making Ontario’s teachers the second highest paid in the world, ranging from $41,000-plus to nearly $93,000 for elementary teachers and $94,600 for secondary teachers. Heaven forbid, Premier Dad, that you should ask for something in return when you’re up against the wall and what you get is whining, wailing, rolling eyes and slamming doors. Oh, that’s me. But you’re paying the price, Premier Dad, for making teachers your pets during the last eight years. The economy has tanked, leaving most of us grappling with a higher cost

Debora Kelly of living on the same or decreased salaries. More than 600,000 Ontarians lost jobs, with companies such as RIM and GM still announcing big cuts. The unemployment rate in York Region and its neighbouring communities is an alarming 8.7 per cent. Yes, it’s time for tough love, with teacher contracts expiring in August and a $15-billion deficit to face. And it is love. We admire and respect our teachers, most of whom are caring, committed and passionate about their

profession. By no stretch of imagination could you call their jobs easy. For most of us, this isn’t about bashing teachers; it’s about Ontario’s economic reality. So, Premier Dad, it’s fair you are seeking appreciation in the form of a twoyear wage freeze and changes to the salary grid, pension plans and payouts for banked sick days. These aren’t grievous requests — even the unions admit a wage freeze may be in order — but the unions are “insulted” by the ultimatum. Do it or I’ll take away your cellphone ... er... or I’ll legislate it, you’re telling them, Premier Dad. I’m just saying, this do-it-or-else gambit typically backfired for me, so I now feign parental rationality and no longer tell them to pack their bags if they don’t like it. (Because they will.) We agree, Premier Dad, it’s only fair teachers — and anybody else making a living on the taxpayers’ back — should do their part. The fact is teachers will still have job security and perks out of reach of most Ontarians. Nobody feels sorry for teachers. So hats off to the Catholic teach-

ers union, which brokered a deal last week, after convincing Premier Dalton McGuinty to approve negotiation. The two-year agreement includes a wage freeze, loss of sick days and three unpaid days, equal to a 1.5-per-cent pay cut that will finance the $7,000 “grid” hike new teachers will still get. If all the unions got on board, the province would save $790 million over two years. Admittedly, a drop in the $15-billion-deficit bucket. The high school and French-language teachers unions have decided to meet with the government, while elementary teachers are still just threatening to hold a one-day walkout if the province legislates a deal. While the unions say teachers will be back at school, strike votes will take place this summer or early fall. Premier Dad, we agree, teachers, too, have to help Ontario get back on its fiscal feet, regardless of whose fault it is. But give them a chance to talk about it before you ground them ... er... legislate the terms of the deal. And teachers, get back to the bargaining table, and if you don’t like the result, at least you get to vote against this Dad in the next election.

Not a hero, blood cancer survivor insists GET INVOLVED

By SIMONE JOSEPH

sjoseph@yrmg.com

Mark Benmoise does not consider himself a hero. He calls himself a survivor. “People keep saying, ‘You are a hero’. I continue to tell people I am not a hero. People fighting cancer now are the real heroes,” he said. The Thornhill resident will be honoured July 23 at the Light The Night Walk, which raises funds for blood cancer research and patient services. “He exemplifies hope for all those battling blood cancer ... His positive attitude and energy continues to inspire us all,” said Andrea Swinton, executive director of Ontario Region of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. Mr. Benmoise was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma on Jan. 19, 2011, at age 23. This led to a roller coaster ride of cancer treatment. Some days, he felt really ill, suffering stomach aches, vomiting and tiredness. Chemotherapy and radiation were draining, he says. He tried to take advantage of the days when he felt better by doing fun activities, including snowboarding and going to the movies. He also did his best to maintain a positive attitude and when it was all over, he felt grateful to those

In addition to taking part in the Light the Night walk at Ryerson University July 23, Mark Benmoise will host a three-on-three basketball tournament Aug. 12 at Westmount Collegiate to raise money to fight cancer. Registration is at 9 a.m. The event will include a mini carnival for children, including snow cones, cotton candy, an auction, prizes and a raffle. Go to makeurmark.ca to register online. who helped him and he wanted to give back. So, Mr. Benmoise, 25, has set a personal goal to raise $25,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada and has organized an event at Westmount Collegiate Institute to raise money. The event will include a threeon-three basketball tournament Aug. 12 at Westmount. Registration is at 9 a.m., the kick-off is at 9:30 a.m. The event will include a mini carnival for children, including snow cones, cotton candy, an auction, prizes and a raffle. Go to makeurmark.ca and to register online. Businesses can sponsor teams.

Mr. Benmoise has participated in the walk in the past and found it an uplifting experience, he said. He plans to tell his story at this year’s Light The Night Walk. “When you attend, you see people, supporters, survivors, it shows you you are not the only one going through it ... It gives you hope all these people are supporting the same cause and fighting for the same thing,” he said. Mr. Benmoise is in remission, having finished his treatment at the end of 2011. Funds raised by teams and individual walkers go toward blood cancer research, free educational materials and events for patients and their families, local programs, such as Family Support Groups and First Connection, a peer-topeer counselling program as well as comprehensive, personalized assistance through our Information Resource Centre. During the event’s leisurely walk, walkers carry illuminated balloons — white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. The Light the Night Walk is at Ryerson University. Go to lightthenight.ca/on for more information

VAUGHAN METROPOLITAN CENTRE – BLACK CREEK RENEWAL MUNICIPAL CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT VAUGHAN, ONTARIO The City of Vaughan recently completed the Black Creek Storm Water Optimization Study Master Plan Class Environmental Assessment. The study identified a range of alternative solutions to reduce flooding and flood damages, improve water quality and limit stream bank erosion in Black Creek. The preferred solution to address flooding was determined to be the reconstruction and renewal of Black Creek between the Edgely Pond (north of Highway 7) and Highway 407. The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) – Black Creek Renewal Class EA will consider different potential alignments and physical forms for Black Creek within the study area and establish a plan for the renewal of Black Creek that satisfies all applicable regulatory criteria.

The province wants to know how you want our child care system improved. The government admits aspects of the system are out of date and, as a first step, has released a discussion paper, Modernizing Child Care. The 16-page paper focuses on funding, consistency of quality of programs, laws and accountability and capacity, outlining the challenges each present and posing questions that need answers from those working in the field and families using the facilities and services. The discussion is long overdue, according to Family Daycare Services CEO Joan Arreda. The nonprofit organization operates many day care centres across York Region and the Greater Toronto Area. STAFF PHOTO/STEVE SOMERVILLE

‘NO SIMPLE ANSWER’ “There is no simple or straightforward answer to any of the questions, as it’s a complicated system,” she said. Although the discussion may be lengthy, the end goal is the same for all involved — to create a system that is accessible to all families that need the service. The Day Nurseries Act, which sets out the minimum standards day-care providers must meet, hasn’t been reviewed in three decades, she pointed out, adding this means anyone can open a day care if they meet some very basic standards. “It begs us to question what the quality of the programs are and the consistency across the province,” she said. With so much emphasis on early learning enhancing a child’s development, evident by the implementation of the full-day kindergarten program, it is important for children in day care to receive educational programing through play. The province suggests increasing data collection, evaluation and reporting to ensure programs are keeping up and benefiting the child. “It’s no secret that bad child care is bad for children,” Ms Arreda said. “We especially need to make sure those day-care facilities receiving public money have measures of quality control.”

FUNDING STRUGGLE Since full-day kindergarten has been put in place, day cares have struggled with funding, since four and five-year-olds no longer require this service. This age group previously offset the cost of operating a facility as younger children require a great staff-to-child ratio. As for home child-care operators, the paper states its goal is to improve safeguards and communication in the informal sector. The province seeks feedback on creating a registry that could help it communicate with caregivers to provide them with information about program quality as well as health and safety. “People who have been in the field for a long time have been asking for this discussion for 30 years,” Ms Arreda said. “I’m pleased to be seeing this paper circulated to open the window.” The five guiding principles in the province’s longterm vision for early learning and child care include support and choice for children and families, commitment to quality programs, efficient funding formula, supportive legislation and regulations and evidence-based decision making and reporting, the paper states.

The same top Toronto defence attorney who assisted her mother during her legal woes represented former mayor Linda Jackson’s daughter in a Milton courtroom Tuesday. Lindsay Coutts, 23, was charged last month with possession of cocaine and ecstasy for the purpose of trafficking, conspiracy to import cocaine and unauthorized possession of a firearm, among other things. Lawyer Morris Manning repeated a request for disclosure from federal Crown attorney Cathy Hoffman during the preliminary hearing Tuesday. To which Ms Hoffman, addressing the judge, replied, “It’s a complicated case as you might understand.” Mr. Manning also requested that Ms Coutts’ bail conditions be altered, namely that she is not to possess a cellphone or pager or any other communications device. He said the bail condition was “interfering” with other details of her life.

Mr. Manning represented Ms Jackson during her failed bid to avoid paying the city $113,000 in costs for legal battles that took place during her term as mayor. The veteran lawyer was also by Ms Jackson’s side during her successful attempt to fight 40 charges under the Municipal Elections Act. Ms Coutts’ hearing comes weeks after the release of details about the arrest of the Toronto resident, who assisted on her mother’s failed 2010 municipal re-election campaign. The Halton police undercover sting operation, called Project Commute, resulted in the June 12 arrest of Ms Coutts and several other people at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. As part of the investigation, search warrants in Halton, Hamilton and Toronto turned up cocaine, oxycodone, ecstasy, marijuana, illegal handguns, ammunition, a bulletproof vest, approximately $45,000 in Canadian currency and equipment used in the production of crack cocaine,

police said. Other Vaughan residents who were arrested as part of the operation include Joseph Sansone Jr., the son of Vaughan dumpster rental king Joseph Sansone, whose charges mirror those of Ms Coutts and Romina Pisani, 28, of Concord, who is charged with conspiracy to import a controlled substance. Ms Coutts was released on $20,000 bail one day after her arrest, paid by Ms Jackson. Ms Jackson did not return reporters’ phone calls and was not in court Tuesday. Ms Coutts’ bail conditions include that she must reside at her mother’s Woodbridge home and that she cannot ingest or inject any drugs. Ms Jackson, the daughter of former long-serving Vaughan mayor Lorna Jackson, was voted in on a change and anti-corruption mandate in 2006. In the next election she was defeated by 35,000 votes by Maurizio Bevilacqua. Ms Coutts’ case returns to court Aug. 14.

en fences and decks within three metres of the 101 townhouse units at Yonge Street and Royal Orchard Boulevard will be removed, Mr. McCann said. Termites need wood and water to survive and the contractor will drain and regrade the seven-acre property to eliminate the water source. While most tenants are happy to see their outdoor space gutted and refitted, some have a sentimental connection to their extended living space. “That makes me sad. This has been a next room to the house,” longtime tenant Audrey Gibson said of her outdoor patio deck, built by her son and his friend 19 years ago when she moved in. “It’s beautiful in the summertime,” she said. “I just love it out here.” Maya Isaak enjoys her small patch of back yard garden, too, but planted plastic flowers this year in anticipation of the renovations. “I’m happy this is being done,” said Ms Isaak, a tenant of three years. “No complaints.” The latest landscape renovations and termite control measures at the 46-year-old complex conclude a three-phase project dating back to 2007. Work done in that time includes roof replacement and mould and asbestos abatement. In 2011, Housing York — the region’s non-profit housing corporation — acquired the then financially troubled housing co-op after a court ruling ended more than two years of legal battles to save

the co-op from being sold and converted to government-run public housing. The proposed renovations will improve the curb appeal of Thornhill Green, which is located in a wellestablished and relatively affluent neighbourhood, Mr. McCann said. A number of recommendations from York Regional Police have been incorporated in the design to improve security, including type and location of fencing, location of vegetation and improved lighting, Mr. McCann said. Trees cut down will be replaced with new hardwood trees and all retaining walls, curbs, fencing and decks will be removed and replaced with termite-proof material such as concrete patio stones, he added. “How we got termites here in the first place, we don’t know, but it’s a good opportunity to clean up the entire site,” Mr. McCann said. Work at Thornhill Green is scheduled to start in about two weeks and is expected to wrap up toward the end of the year.

A spot favoured by termites: older wood with some rot, which will be replaced under a plan to replace wooden structures at Thornhill Green with concrete. OPEN

chairperson. “Even without reciprocal agreements in place, as an industry leader and a socially responsible company, we have an obligation to assist others in their time of need.” The PowerStream workers have joined more than 500 line crews from Consumers Energy and several other utility companies in the project. Although some customers had service restored today, more than 45,000, mainly in central and eastern Michigan, are still without power, according to Consumers Energy. The outage is one of the latest to strike the midwestern and eastern United States, which has been rocked by powerful storms during the past two weeks as a heat wave grips the region. A dozen PowerStream employees spent the weekend in Michigan working to help restore power to more than 100,000 customers left in the dark after thunderstorms pummeled the state last Thursday. The municipally owned utility company sent four, three-person crews in four bucket trucks and three pick-up trucks to assist Flintbased Consumers Energy in its efforts to get the power back on. “As one of Ontario’s largest municipally-owned electricity distribution companies, we recognize the importance of being there to assist other utilities when these types of unfortunate events occur,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, who serves as PowerStream’s

south of the border for the rest of the week. “I am proud of our staff’s quick response to this request for assistance,” PowerStream president and CEO Brian Bentz said. “It’s not easy to work under such difficult and unfamiliar conditions, but they recognize the urgency of the situation and the need to be of assistance, especially given the number of people affected.” PowerStream is jointly owned by the municipalities of Barrie, Markham and Vaughan, with the latter owning the largest share. The company serves more than 335,000 residential and commercial customers in Alliston, Aurora, Barrie, Beeton, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Penetanguishene, Markham, Richmond Hill, Thornton, Tottenham and Vaughan.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF MEETING City of Vaughan - “New Ward” Boundary Review You are invited to undertake in a public review of a proposed new Ward 6 in Vaughan. The terms of reference and analysis of the data used to support the proposal will be presented by Dr. Ron Landes, electoral boundary expert. In keeping with the Ontario Municipal Board’s Decision of 2009 on Vaughan’s Ward Boundary Review, where the OMB recommended a new review take place before the 2014 Municipal Election, and in order to enhance the effective representation for all residents of Vaughan, a public review of the current Ward Boundaries has been undertaken by the citizens of Vaughan. Two issues are to be addressed: first, how can the effective representation of the rapidly growing urban areas be increased, while at the same time protecting the remaining countryside areas of the township. In order to accomplish both goals, a new sixth ward is being proposed.

Vaughan tow truck drivers appear to have abandoned their protest at city hall, but the battle over new rate caps is far from over, according to towing company owner Rob Mileto. “It’s going to get really ugly now,” Mr. Mileto, owner of Streetpro Roadside Assistance, said. “It’s only going to get bigger and bigger and bigger every day that goes by. This time we’re not going to be in there (the city hall parking lot), we’re

going to be outside on city streets. Nobody’s going to get home and no one’s going to get to work in the morning. ... If they don’t listen to us, we’re going to shut down the city of Vaughan with our tow trucks.” Mr. Mileto, who ran unsuccessfully in the 2010 municipal election, said local tow truck operators are currently preparing to take legal action against the city. It’s the latest move by Vaughan’s tow truck drivers in their efforts to overturn towing and storage rate caps imposed by the city late last

month. Under the new regulations towing companies can charge a maximum of $125 for a non-collision tow and that includes the use of dollies and other equipment used to assist in towing. The maximum storage fees are set at $55 per day for outside storage and $60 per day for indoor storage, over a 24-hour period. The city also limited the amount that can be charged for waiting at the Collision Reporting Centre to $67 per hour, after the first hour.

At the same time, the rate for travel time outside city limits was boosted to $3.58 per kilometre, up from $2 per kilometre. The rate caps are in addition to existing rates in the city’s bylaw, which currently imposes a maximum charge of $250 to tow a vehicle from a collision. When councillors approved the new rate caps, they also committed to reviewing them after nine months to assess the impact. A spokesperson for the municipality said in an e-mail Tuesday the

city’s position remains unchanged and the rate caps will be reviewed in the spring. But Mr. Mileto said local tow truck drivers aren’t willing to wait that long. “From now on any meetings that go on, it doesn’t have to be about towing, tow truck drivers are going to be at every single meeting,” he said. “We’re going to fill up every chair in there until they hear us out.” To continue reading this story in full, visit yorkregion.com

Activities designed to attract all ages, cultural groups From page 1.

Rucchetto, information services librarian with Angus Glen Library. The One Book initiative, which runs until Nov. 14, begins Saturday with a launch celebration at Thornhill Community Centre Library, including a reading and

discussion by Dr. Lam. It will be followed by children’s activities (face-painting, crafts and special storytime) and live performances including lion dance and marital arts, classical Indian and Chinese dance and YorkSlam spoken word. Ms Rucchetto said the activities

are designed to attract all ages and cultural groups. “We wanted this to be a reading program, absolutely, but it’s a reading program the whole community can be involved in.” That ability to explore and share ideas through books forms the core of a rich city and a rich society, Dr.

Lam says. Dr. Lam’s parents came to Canada from the expatriate Chinese community of Vietnam. An emergency physician in Toronto, his winning book of short stories, Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, follows a diverse group of medical students through their efforts

The Headmaster’s Wager is about a compulsive gambler who is a Chinese headmaster of an English school in Saigon during the Vietnam War. Described by critics as a page turner with the makings of a masterpiece, it explores themes of cultural heritage, war, immigration, wealth, gambling, prejudice and human strength. Bloodletting, a short story collection, was chosen for those who are pressed for time, while avid readers can dive into the novel, Ms Rucchetto said. Other scheduled events include multilingual short story writing workshops, book discussions based on the themes and seminars on Chinese medicine, healthy eating and the psychology of reading. The program is presented by Markham Public Library working with the support of other local organizations including the Markham Arts Council, Markham Recreation, Thornhill Seniors Centre and York South Literacy Council. As the program progresses, the library will seek involvement from other community groups. For more information, call 905-513-7977 or visit www.markhampubliclibrary.ca or your local library branch. Except where noted, all programs are free and open to the public.

The Markham Jazz Festival’s 15th Anniversary Birthday Blues Bash will feature five blues acts performing separately and together on one stage Aug. 16 to kick off this year’s jazz festival weekend. “I’m very excited to be bringing together so many of Canada’s best artists on one stage and show off the many shades of blues music,” said artistic director Michael Occhipinti. “This kind of concert has never happened in Markham before and it’s unlikely these great acts will all be together again on one stage unless it’s at an awards show.” The show begins at 8 p.m. at the Flato Markham Theatre, 171 Town Centre Blvd. Performers include:

Shakura S’aida

An international artist who has enriched the jazz, blues and classic R&B communities with her soulful voice, personality and commitment to her music. She has recently released Time, a double CD that gives her growing audience a taste of her different approaches to blues, soul and rock and roll.

Harrison Kennedy B.B. King has hailed Kennedy as Canada’s premier blues performer. This talented vocalist and guitarist has a distinctive new album, One Dog Barkin’ Blues, which embodies a personal recognition of the blues he heard in Tennessee and the

Now she has completed a third full-length album which represents both a return to her roots and a gutsy move into uncharted territory, and she’s cheerfully titled it Broad.

Former Thornhill junior revels in Calder Cup win last season, the six-foot, one-inch, 210-pound forward revealed in sharing the coveted hardware with family and friends for several hours at the Major Milliken Restaurant Saturday. “I’ve dreamed of playing in the NHL. But winning the Calder Cup is one of the greatest feelings ever,” Angelidis, an undrafted player during his junior years, said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.” Angelidis played junior hockey with the Thornhill Rattlers in 2001-2002 before joining the major junior A Owen Sound Attack of

the OHL, where he played four seasons, scoring 53 goals in 2005-2006, his final year with the Attack before turning pro. As a member on the Calder Cup championship team, Angelidis said they employ the same ritual as teams winning the Stanley Cup where each player gets possession of it for a day. “I was the second guy on the team who got it and from here it goes to Burlington,” he said. Angelidis said there was a time early in the season when thoughts

of winning the American Hockey League’s version of the Holy Grail seemed like a dream. But he said a meeting in early February changed their fortunes dramatically. “We hadn’t played well right up until Christmas,” he recalled. “But on Super Bowl Sunday, we had a players-only meeting. “Myself and some of the other veterans talked to the rest of the guys and after that we went on a winning streak. “Once we figured out how to win, we did it right to the end.” They sure did — 29 straight

games en route to sweeping the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, in the league final. As for what was discussed during that clandestine gathering, Angelidis said it was a matter of accountability. “We had to be accountable for each other. “We were at a point where we tried to do roles that weren’t meant to be. “Then after our meeting, everybody understood their roles.” Another big factor in the Admirals’ incredible run was their depth.

Angelidis said they could roll four solid forward lines. Not to mention their defence was solid and goalkeeping clutch. “It was hard to scratch guys from our lineup,” he said. “We had so many guys that were so good.” Adding icing on the cake was in having the good fortune of clinching the Calder Cup in front of family and friends at the Ricoh Coliseum in the series finale. “When I got to lift the Cup, my whole family was there. It was a great experience,” he said. Amassing one goal and five assists during the postseason and

14 goals and 13 assists during the regular season, Angelidis inked a one-year deal with the parent Lightning club for the upcoming season. While Angelidis enjoyed being on a Calder Cup trophy winning team, he would like nothing more than to have an extended stay with the Lightning after playing six games with them last season. “We’ll see how it goes,” he said. “I’m a loyal guy and they were good with me. It’s a good organization. “Hopefully this time around I’ll be able to stay up with the big club right from the start.”
