Anti-Semitic call at synagogue unfounded: police By Tim Kelly
tkelly@yrmg.com
Police announced Friday afternoon that reports of an anti-Semitic incident outside a Thornhill synagogue last week are unfounded. York Regional Police investigators received reports of a disturbing incident that allegedly occurred on July 22 outside Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (BAYT) synagogue on Clark Avenue, just north of Steeles Avenue in Thornhill. The original report said a car was parked close to a stop sign with two men located

nearby, their faces covered by hoodies. It was also reported the men were taking pictures of security cameras at the synagogue. Allegedly, after a security guard approached them, one of the men made an anti-Semitic remark, before they got into the vehicle and drove away. A story in local news media indicated one of the men said “f*** Jews” before leaving. It also said the York police force would be stepping up patrols around places of worship across the region as a result of the incident. After further investigation, however, police are now telling a different story.

“While there may have been youths in the area at the time, they were not concealing their identity, nor taking photos. The offensive remark was directed against the security guard personally and was not of an anti-Semitic nature,” York Region Police said in a news release. York police further emphasized there was no security threat from the incident to the BAYT or to the Jewish community. Vaughan resident and Tennis Canada’s vice-president of professional and national events, Gavin Ziv, at the Aviva Centre at York University, site of this year’s Rogers Cup. Ziv oversees close to 80 tournaments on behalf of Tennis Canada each year – with the goal of growing the sport in the country.
While Canadian tennis fans are familiar with players Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic and what their on-court success has done to grow the game in the country, most will be less familiar with the name Gavin Ziv and the important role he plays behind the scenes. Ziv, Tennis Canada’s vice-president of professional and national events, grew up in Thornhill and currently lives in Vaughan. With the assistance of a dedicated team, the married father of two oversees close to 80 tennis tournaments each year from junior to senior events, wheelchair matches to professional events — including the Davis Cup, Fed Cup and Rogers Cup, which begins this Saturday. “The overall goal is to grow the game of tennis in Canada,” said the former Thornlea Secondary student, who first joined Tennis Canada full time 17 years ago after graduating from York University in 1998. As a self-described tennis enthusiast, Ziv says his passion for the sport dates back to his early childhood. “I was born in South Africa and moved to Thornhill when I was five; and from day one, my family and I were always playing on the tennis courts; we used to play at the German Mills tennis club,” he recalled. “I guess you can say tennis has always been a big part of my life and I’ve become very passionate about the sport,” added the Tennis Canada
executive, who turns 40 during Rogers Cup action, on Aug. 15. Given his passion for tennis, he was eager to find creative ways to get involved in his early teens. “I actually started out as a ball kid back in 1987 when the tournament was under a different name; but I remembered how much I loved the atmosphere and being on the court,” he said with a smile. “Then I became the committee head of the ball crew, which is when I kind of realized that I wanted to be on the administration side of sport.” During his 17 years, and counting, with Tennis Canada, Ziv says one of his personal highlights came from his involvement in the building of the new tennis stadium in 2004 on the campus of York University — formerly known as the Rexall Centre and now the Aviva Centre. “It’s a world-class facility that allows us to showcase the Rogers Cup tournament,” he said of the 12,500-seat stadium. In addition to hosting the world’s best tennis players, Ziv says the Rogers Cup also has many fun and interactive events to engage and excite players and tennis fans alike throughout the tournament. With the top women players competing in Toronto this year, someone who is happy to endorse the great job that Ziv and the Rogers Cup organizers do each year, is 21-time grand slam champion, Serena Williams. “The tournament is really play-
er friendly. There’s always so many good things and opportunities for the players to enjoy the city as well as playing. It’s one of the best tournaments of the year,” said the current world No. 1 of Tennis Canada’s marquee tournament. Among the other notable contenders joining the 33-year-old champion in Toronto this year for the Rogers Cup will be Maria Sharapova of Russia and Canadian superstar Eugenie Bouchard. Meanwhile in Montreal — the site of the men’s Rogers Cup action — Thornhill’s Raonic and Vasek Pospisil of British Columbia will be in the spotlight with both considered legitimate contenders for this year’s title. Despite the fact that most of what he does happens away from the spotlight, Ziv takes pride in knowing that his efforts and those of the Canadian tennis superstars ultimately contribute to a common goal — the growth of tennis in Canada. “Being involved with Tennis Canada year-round and overseeing 75 to 80 tournaments, it’s great to see top players like Milos, Genie, Vasek, and Daniel (Nestor) doing so well, because the exposure is great,” said Ziv. “The sport is healthy and growing, as more people are starting to play. For me that’s a big highlight because I care so much about this sport.”

Thornhill’s Raonic, Bouchard prepare for Rogers Cup, while helping tennis hopefuls By DAVID LI
Canadian tennis superstars Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic were in Toronto at the end of July, leading a tennis clinic for children from local tennis clubs. The clinic was held at the HTO Park in downtown Toronto and provided Thornhill’s Raonic and Bouchard with the opportunity to share their skills and offer valuable tips to the young tennis hopefuls. The event also served to promote the upcoming Rogers Cup; and also the mini Rogers Cup — a youth tennis tournament featuring the next generation of Canadian tennis superstars. “It’s great to be part of this with Genie and helping to inspire kids to get more involved in tennis and
also helping to promote tennis in Canada,” said Raonic. While Raonic had fun interacting with the young tennis players July 22, he has been working hard over the past few weeks to overcome a foot injury suffered earlier this season. “I’ve been rehabbing the whole time,” explained Raonic, who hasn’t competed since being ousted in the third round of Wimbledon. “I haven’t had any time off. It’s been seven hour days and I spend most of it in the U.S. working with a medical team there,” added the former Thornhill Secondary student about his rehab journey. With his return to competitive tennis scheduled for the Rogers
Cup in early August, Raonic says his recovery is moving in the right direction. “I think I’ll be able to find my tennis game, but I just have to make sure I find my health first. But I’m on track and I’ve been making great progress.” At this year’s Rogers Cup, Raonic will be competing in Montreal against the top men’s tennis players (however, not Roger Federer), while Bouchard and the world’s best female players will be competing on the campus of York University in Toronto from Aug. 8 to 16. For more information, visit rogerscup.com. David Li is a Thornhill freelance writer.

Vaughan food company gets federal funding boost A local food company is getting a major boost from the federal government. Conservative Vaughan MP Julian Fantino, who also serves as associate minister of defence, announced Friday that MiMi Food Products Inc. is getting up to $950,000 to increase production capabilities at its Vaughan facility. The firm, established in 2001, produces a range of products — including such items as frozen pizza dough balls, pizza crusts, focaccia and flatbreads — for the food service industry and large grocery store chains.
This investment will allow the company to acquire equipment needed to produce its products more efficiently and on a larger scale, as well as expand its product line, according to a news release. The funding is expected to create up to 18 full-time, skilled food-processing jobs by 2018 and allow the company to leverage $1 million through private sector investments. The repayable contribution comes through FedDev Ontario’s Investing in Business Growth and Productivity initiative, aimed at helping established businesses expand, invest in productivity improvements and compete globally. - Adam Martin-Robbins

10-bed hospice planned By Adam Martin-Robbins
amartinrobbins@yrmg.com
Vaughan residents who are terminally ill and need end-of-life care, but don’t want to spend their final days in a hospital, could have an alternative closer to home in just a few years. Hospice Vaughan is moving ahead with plans to build a 10-bed residential hospice, which would provide specialized care for pain and symptom management along with bereavement, psychosocial and spiritual counselling to patients and their families in a home-like setting. “Our health care system is experiencing a crisis with the delivery of hospice and palliative care services. Not only is there a complete lack of hospice palliative beds in Vaughan, but this need will only escalate given the growth and aging population of our community,” said Dr. Vincent Maida, a palliative medicine specialist and Hospice Vaughan board member. The goal is to have the facility up and running by 2018. Once completed, it is projected to serve more than 200 patients annually, which would mean an estimated savings of more than $2 million per year for the ministry of health, according to hospice officials. But a facility of this type comes with a sizeable price tag — construction costs alone are pegged at about $10 million. Thus, exactly when the doors of the residential hospice will open depends, in part, on the response to Hospice Vaughan’s community fundraising campaign.

Running by 2018 “The future Hospice Vaughan will be a centre of excellence for the delivery of hospice and palliative patient care, inter-professional education and inter-professional research with enhanced counselling services and community outreach and a day hospice program,” Mary Grace Tatangelo, board president, said. A steering committee has been established to provide guidance and help launch the capital fundraising campaign. Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua serves as honorary chairperson of the committee. “For 20 years, Hospice Vaughan has been committed to providing important services to people facing a life-ending illness and their loved ones,” he said in a news release. “This new residential hospice will improve access to palliative care in our community as well as help ease the burden for many families in their time of need.”

The organization is currently in the process of assessing potential sites and consulting with key stakeholders and partners. Additional partners are also being sought to help make the project a reality. Hospice Vaughan has provided a wide range of services to the community during the past 20 years including grief and bereavement counselling programs and visiting volunteer outreach support. The new residential facility will enable the organization to expand the range of services it offers.

Spread-eagled in free fall, the wind paints a huge smile on the face of senior Len Bredin, who celebrated his 90th birthday with his third skydive July 25. And that exhilaration lasted well after the thrill-seeking Thornhill man touched down after his tandem jump from 10,000 feet with instructor Juan Castillo of the Toronto Parachute School amidst the more unfamiliar whoosh and pop of a parachute rather than birthday candles at a Baldwin landing strip. “He was smiling from ear-to-ear after a perfect landing,” says Sutton resident Shelley Crites of her dad, Bredin. “He was very pleased with himself.” Family and friends gathered to watch the Thornhill resident’s third jump in the past decade, including other daughter, Wendy Vermuellen of Newmarket, and son Kent Bredin of East Gwillimbury. Crites says while she was nervous, she’s wasn’t surprised her dad took to the skies to celebrate his 90th since he was “looking for a high” to mark the milestone — especially since he has been acting as main caregiver for her mom for the past decade. “It is a very demanding role and this was something purely for him to enjoy,” she says, adding, however, her dad has always been and wants to stay active.
True enough, considering the man who still lives in his own house and drives a car waterskied to mark his 80th and 85th birthdays, respectively. Bredin is also a very determined guy, considering he didn’t let a bout of shingles pre-jump deter him from making a second tandem skydive with Castillo. “I don’t care what happens, I’m doing it,” Bredin told family members. At a post-parachute party with extended family and friends later that day, Bredin summarized his experience, calling it “exhilarating”. And he hasn’t ruled out a fourth jump next year.

Isn’t solitude, independence good for our children?
Can Ontario pension law be challenged?
I
stare at a photo of a group of children, scanning their faces. No, they aren’t in this one. I scan the next photograph. Nope, they aren’t in that one either. I’m searching through the photos posted on my daughters’ camp website, hoping to catch a glimpse of what my little ones are doing, how they are feeling and who they are with when they are away from me. I saw nothing wrong with this daily ritual and with the photos themselves — that is until I spoke to my mother-in-law. She said something along the lines of: “It is a bit ridiculous! Can’t children do anything nowadays without their parents watching?” Whoa. I hadn’t thought of it that way. To make matters worse, a few days after her comment, I heard a program on the CBC radio program Spark that made me think maybe she had a point. During the program, there was an interview with Michael Harris, author of The End of Absence: Reclaiming What We’ve Lost in a World of Constant Connection. He spoke about how children are losing their solitude, their absence from parents. Harris was born in 1980 and says when he was a child, he remembers going to the park with friends. His parents sometimes did not know where he was until dark when, presumably, he had to head home. He and his friends were truly alone and free to explore. If, they wondered where a creek came from, they would hike up a creek. The idea being, he remem-
Simone Joseph bers what it was like not to be connected by computer, by phone to other people, to adults, to his parents. Harris now worries children are being deprived of the same sort of solitude, of the ability to be on their own. As a parent, I worry about that, too. When children are constantly being photographed and videotaped, when they are constantly in touch by phone, tweet, Facebook, text, when do they have time to think on their own, to daydream, to learn from their mistakes or struggle? Don’t get me wrong, I am still going to painstakingly search for my daughters in those camp photographs. My daughters are still very young — only four and six years old. But I worry about being the proverbial helicopter parent, about being too much a part of their lives. I can only hope that some day, I can help them create (or they will create for themselves) opportunities for solitude and independence.
Simone Joseph is a reporter for the Thornhill and Richmond Hill Liberal newspapers.
Open letter to Thornhill MPP Gila Martow on pension legislation: I am greatly concerned about the proposed Ontario pension contributions by the Liberal government. It is our association’s belief that this is a regressive tax, which cannot be sustained by the thousands of dry cleaners, launderers and fabricare professionals throughout the Province of Ontario. It will result in the loss of many jobs and cause salary reductions in order to cover the cost of the businesses contributions. I am wondering if there is anything that can be done to prevent this unwarranted burden on business with the economic downturn that we are all going through. There will also be many companies that are borderline in currently maintaining their operation, which will result in many closures. Can there be a challenge to this legislation to the

We’re paying for this election folly Well, well ... here we go again with a very expensive electoral campaign. Did I say pain? Darn right. And who is going to pay for this folly? You and I and the rest of this great nation. Prime Minister Harper really knows how to screw the Canadian people, giving $100 million to Toyota, while knowing full well that Toyota will be shipping production of the Corolla to Mexico in 2019 — bye, bye tax dollars. Oh, and we’ll be subjected to 11 weeks of verbal diarrhea and tons of unwanted election literature, or should I say litter. I used to watch TV, but lately there is only about 25 minutes per hour of real

Can you imagine watching 35 minutes of election diatribe every hour, 24/7! I may just turn the TV off for 11 weeks and go outside for some fresh air. I don’t know about you, but I pity the poor voters. They will have no clue as to who they are going to get. Why, they will be so worn out listening to all the lies they hear they will not know which way is up. Harper called for an early election so he can get more of your money to buy your vote with; the other parties don’t have that option.

York Regional Police are looking for the rider of a motorcycle they say intentionally evaded police in Markham Friday night. An officer parked on Warden Avenue close to Cachet Parkway saw a motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed around 8:20 p.m. — clocking it in excess of 180 km/h in a 60 zone. The officer activated his cruiser’s emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the motorcycle. Police believe the rider saw the police car, made a U-turn through a red light and sped away from the area. Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance for any information that may lead to the identity of the rider. You can watch a video clip of the motorcycle from the cruiser’s dashcam at: http:// youtube/JadgIKbcL7k. During the Civic holiday long weekend, York officers charged 18 drivers with impaired driving, four with dangerous driving and two with stunt driving. In one incident, a BMW Z3 was clocked on Bloomington Road near Woodbine Avenue in Whitchurch-Stouffville travelling more than 165 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. The driver, a 27-year-old from Richmond Hill, was charged with stunt driving and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
NEWS
BRIEFS Mosquito pools test positive for West Nile Two mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus in York Region. The pools were found in Markham (close to the Warden Avenue and Hwy. 7 intersection) and Newmarket (near the Davis Drive and Prospect Street junction). Residents can take simple steps to reduce the risk of West Nile and exposure to mosquitoes, York Region’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Karim Kurji, said last Friday. Cover up when heading outside, especially during dusk and dawn, and eliminate standing water around your property to reduce mosquito breeding. The region is offering several tips to protect residents from the virus. Residents should get rid of mosquitofriendly areas around their homes, including stagnant water found in birdbaths, flowerpots, swimming pool covers, clogged gutters and eavestroughs. Window screens should be checked to ensure they are tight fitting and in good repair. While outside, wear insect repellent and lighter coloured
protective clothing, including socks, long-sleeved shirts and jackets. You should also minimize outdoor activities during periods when mosquitoes are most active — dusk and dawn. Regional staff treat catch basins along regional and municipal roads and other stagnant public watercourses such as roadside ditches. For more on the virus, call York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653 or visit york.ca/westnile. - Chris Simon

City turns to signs to get residents to cut grass By Laura Finney
lfinney@yrmg.com
If you live in certain parts of Markham, you may have noticed signs reminding residents to cut their grass. “We put up these signs to remind residents to maintain their grass and property right up to the curb,” said ward 6 councillor Amanda Collucci. According to the Keep Markham Beautiful bylaw, grass must be kept cut below six inches. So far the signs are in wards 5 and 6.
Dr. Traicus Optometrist has moved his practice to 1 Steeles Ave. E. 2nd Floor (Yonge & Steeles)

Grass grows across street from sign at McCowan Road and Bur Oak Avenue put up by the City of Markham.
‘We got complaints’ Ward 5 Councillor Colin Campbell said they have noticed in some areas, particularly in newer sections with more townhouses and rental properties, grass was getting too long. “Tenants and owners are not keeping property up in front of the house, and that includes the boulevard. If you have one between the sidewalk and the road, it’s your responsibility on the bylaw to keep that trimmed,” he said. “We noticed a lot of people were not doing that. We got complaints.”
This has been an ongoing issue, he said, and they decided to use the signs to help educate people about the bylaw. “The vast majority of people keep their houses beautiful, and have pride in their homes,” said Campbell. “We just want to get the message across to those that don’t. We want the place to be beautiful.” He said he has been working with several community groups to help spread the message, and so far it has been successful. “These signs have been very well received. We think that they are working,” said Collucci. And if residents do not comply, it can be costly. “If you don’t cut it we will cut it and we put it on your taxes,” said Campbell. Collucci said it could cost just over $60 an hour if city staff cuts your lawn, plus a $50 fee. “That’s not the way we want to approach it. We want people to be proactive,” said Campbell. “It’s really for the sake of the neighbourhood.” For more information about this, and other bylaws visit markham.ca

Missing man found in Toronto hospital By Jeremy Grimaldi
jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
“It’s a miracle, an absolute miracle,” exclaimed Rinaldo Lorenzoni. For four days and three nights last week his son, Mark, has been wandering the streets of Vaughan and then Toronto during the year’s most searing heat wave. The 33-year-old Vaughan man, who has suffered from mental health issues, had been missing since Sunday, July 26, when he left his home to go for a walk. His parents were worried sick over his disappearance, wondering how he’d survive without money, a phone or bank cards. “It’s amazing, what a relief,” Rinaldo added last Wednesday. “I had a feeling he was still alive, but I kept thinking four days in the heat… he might have collapsed and then what?” Mark found himself at a Toronto shopping plaza near Kipling Avenue and The Queen-

reporting and the misuse of police resources. In a media release late Friday, The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center commended the York Police for its “diligent investigation” into the alleged suspicious activity. “As Jewish communities in Canada and, indeed, around the world face an alarming increase in anti-Semitic activity, people are understandably on edge and alert to potential dangers,” explained Wiesenthal Centre president and CEO Avi Benlolo.
Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.

sway. Luckily, a concerned member of the public discovered him and called the authorities for him to be picked up. He was then brought to a St. Joseph’s hospital on Tuesday. He did not speak to anyone and it was only after a staff member at the hospital recognized the man from his picture in the media that York Regional Police were called on Wednesday afternoon. York police had been searching for him in Vaughan ravines and neighbourhoods for days. His mother, Maria, said she didn’t know much about how he made it as far as he did, but she said staff had cleaned up her son and he had been admitted into hospital. “When I saw him he looked completely shell shocked and very dehydrated,” she said. “Now, I just feel relief and gratitude. I’m so happy.”
Cyclist dies in weekend Vaughan crash A male cyclist was killed in an early morning crash in Vaughan Saturday, Aug. 1, which occurred on Dufferin Street south of Teston Road. York Regional Police say a male cyclist was struck by a vehicle around 4:30 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained at the scene.
Fail-to-remain driver sought Investigators with the York Regional Police major collision investigation unit would like to speak with the driver of a transport truck involved in a fail-toremain collision in Markham Friday morning. On Friday, shortly after 8 a.m., police were called to a collision scene on Ninth Line, south of Elgin Mills Road. Officers learned that a male pedestrian, who was part of a road work crew, had been struck by a large pylon propelled at him by a northbound transport truck that had struck the pylon. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive. The transport truck did not stop at the scene.
Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Each day, there are more than 4,900 children treated at the 14 Children’s Miracle Network member hospitals in Canada, making partnerships like this so important. In 2013-2014, SickKids managed 29,960 clinic visits from 10,117 patients in York Region. Treat yourself to a Blizzard Treat at Dairy Queen Thursday, Aug. 13 and support the hospital. Toronto FC II dug itself into a hole when the team played host to Louisville City FC in their United Soccer League match at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan Saturday. In the end, they paid the price in a 3-2 loss to Louisville City FC, who extended their winning streak to six games. Toronto FC II got off to a good start in the match when Mo Babouli opened up the scoring in the 21st minute. But Louisville City FC midfielder Kadeem Dacres tied the game with a goal at the 58th minute. Ten minutes later Louisville took the lead on a goal by Niall McCabe. Louisville City FC extended their lead at the 73rd minute on a goal by Bryan Burke. Just eight minutes later, Toronto FC II cut their deficit on a goal by forward Jordan Hamilton. Unfortunately for Toronto FC II, that would be as close as they would get before regulation time concluded. Occupying 11th place in the Eastern Conference, the loss dropped Toronto FC II’s record to 4-10-3-15. Louisville City FC improved its second-place record to 11-3-5-38. Toronto FC II’s next game is scheduled to be against the sixth-place Pittsburgh Riverhounds at The Soccer Centre Saturday at 8 p.m. - Michael Hayakawa

Allan Mills was key figure in Masonic Lodge By Teresa LaTchford
tlatchford@yrmg.com
A
llan Mills left his legacy as a Tuscan Lodge member. Born in 1906 on the family farm in Tecumseth Township, he attended elementary school in Schomberg. When he and his older brother, Clarke, were ready to attend high school, the family sold the farm and relocated to Newmarket, where Mills continued his education at Newmarket High School. Mills studied at the University of Toronto, where he earned his bachelor of arts degree and went onto earn a bachelor of laws degree at Osgoode Hall. He established his law practice in Newmarket in 1929.
After 13 years of courtship, Mills married Selena Lorine Rutledge, a nurse, and they raised three children, William, Margaret and Norman, in their home at 167 Prospect St. In his solo practice, he quickly became known for his expertise in wills and estates before joining the Stiver, Vale, Peppiatt and Errington firm. It wasn’t all work and no play for Mills, however, as he is remembered by his son, Norman, as an enthusiastic sportsman, partridge and deer hunting in the fall and fishing in the spring and summer in the Dunkerron-Horning’s Mills area, where he spent much of his childhood. His green thumb and farm upbringing also had him tending to gardens at home.
In the cold months, Mills could be found socializing during a game of bridge or refinishing antique furniture. He and his wife were both members of Trinity United Church, where he served on the board. At the age of 26, Mills followed the lead of many other up-andcoming men in Newmarket and joined the Tuscan Masonic Lodge, where he was initiated in 1932. His enthusiasm contributed to his quick rise through the ranks of Freemasonry. He was elected secretary of the lodge in 1938 and worshipful master in 1941. Mills contributed further by offering to do the legal work without charge for the lodge
when it purchased its own building at 441 Millard Ave. and loaned the lodge building committee $1,000 out of his own pocket. Mills was also the driving force behind the lodge incorporating to become a private company without share capital in 1957. His dedication didn’t go unnoticed, as he was presented his Grand Steward’s regalia for his services to the lodge and community and was considered the traditional installing master of Tuscan Lodge. Mills died Nov. 26, 1981 and his funeral service was held with full Masonic Honours the day after. — sources: Tuscan Lodge AF & AM minute books, Norman Mills
