Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made three visits to York Region since calling an early election — and twice in Markham. On Friday he campaigned in a Richmond Hill backyard, where he spoke about universal childcare benefits. “It was a pleasure to have PM Harper in Richmond Hill to discuss UCCB and how it will benefit every family with children,” tweeted Michael Parsa, the Conservative candidate for the Richmond Hill riding. On Monday the prime minister visited St.

Harper spoke about the Conservative Party’s plans to bring 10,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq over the next few years, if his government is re-elected. He also pledged to give $9 million to fund groups working to protect targeted religious areas and artefacts. A notice from the Harper campaign team went out early Monday morning to media about the 10:30 a.m. appearance.

This young girl, Michele, was one of the enthusiastic participants in a soccer camp run by Thornhill’s Marcus Bernard and Soccer for Change in the Dominican Republic. Although first shy and attending camp barefoot, she borrowed shoes and soon enjoyed all the camp had to offer.

On her first day of soccer camp, Michele showed up barefoot. The eight-year-old also had a nasty burn mark, likely caused by the exhaust pipe of a motorcycle. Thornhill’s Marcus Bernard remembers how timid she was that first day and how afraid she was of embarrassing herself. The camp was part of a pilot trip that ran from July 11 to 18 in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, where poverty affects many families. Michele had appeared on the second day of this camp, organized by the Canadian non-profit organization Soccer For Change, a foundation that develops children’s life skills through sports. Bernard, Soccer For Change director, thought Michele needed some one-onone time before playing with the group. To boost her low self-confidence, Bernard gave her words of encouragement through a Spanish-speaking volunteer. At first, she didn’t want to touch the ball, but then slowly dribbled it as he backed up. Gradually, her face changed. “You could see her expression, her joy. She really came alive,” Bernard said.

“By the end of the day, she was smiling, laughing.” She returned the next day, this time wearing shoes borrowed from a cousin. Michele was ready to play. “She was one of the first on the field. She jumped into a game and had fun,” Bernard said. “That transformation was so quick.” Michele’s soccer skills were still very basic. But, she had tried something new, gained self-confidence and learned not to be afraid of failing. In all, 57 underprivileged children took part in the camp that week and nine volunteers coached them. Soccer For Change donated 100 soccer balls in the hopes the children would keep playing long after the camp ended. Bernard’s passion for soccer took root early. Raised in Thornhill, Bernard, 21, has been playing soccer since he was three years old. His first job was refereeing for the Thornhill Soccer Club. Bernard first visited the Dominican Republic in 2011 when he was a Brock University student, visiting the Dominican to teach children English. He connected most with the children outside of the classroom, while playing with them. His experience in the Domin-

ican inspired him to create the Soccer for Change organization in August 2014. He teamed up with Outreach 360 (outreach360.org) to run the one-week soccer camp in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic. The organization hopes to make another trip there in February. The group returned to Canada July 18. The following day, they attended a Pan Am event at Aurora’s Hillary House National Historic Site. It was a family fun day and Soccer for Change was among the special guests. It was a chance to tell people about the group’s mission and sell soccer balls. The group is searching for more soccer tournaments in which to take part. The impact of the camp on the children was “huge’, Bernard said. “They were so happy, engaged, doing drills and competition,” he said. “They developed life skills. You could see the impact throughout the week. They were getting more comfortable, respectful. They had a passion for soccer.”

Thornhill volunteer facilitates TIFF’s Italian summer film series By David Li

In addition to the world renowned Toronto International Film Festival every September, TIFF also runs year-round programming. This summer, Thornhill’s Samantha Zanjani is playing a key role as a volunteer in TIFF’s Summer In Italy film series, which runs all summer until Sept. 5. The self-described film enthusiast volunteers as a facilitator for TIFF’s 2015 summer series featuring classic Italian films such as La Dolce Vita, The Fiances, and Big Deal on Madonna Street — with all films being screened at the TIFF Bell Lightbox building downtown on King Street. The Summer In Italy series aims

to celebrate Italian cinema and provides Italian Canadians and lovers of all things Italian with the unique opportunity to travel in back in time and rediscover Italy through the decades. “After the films, a group of us unites in one of the TIFF green rooms and we discuss what we liked about the movie and certain scenes that stick out about the film. My role is to facilitate the discussion,” said the 24-year-old woman. According to TIFF’s communications manager, Lina Rodriguez, the purpose of the post-screening discussions is to connect film lovers and to get them more engaged. “Like a film club, these volunteer-facilitated talks offer an

opportunity for visitors to share and engage in conversation with fellow film enthusiasts,” explained Rodriguez. “A discussion can really be fun and can open up your perspective on the film you saw. I think every time you watch a film, you can take something away from it.” Having first volunteered with TIFF during its film festival in September of 2012, the recent Ryerson graduate says she is more than happy to take on new roles within the organization. “I started volunteering a few years back during the film festival, but then I realized that they were doing cool stuff like this year ‘round. That’s when I decided to

branch out more,” she said. Zanjani says she’s been actively recommending the Summer in Italy series to her friends and family from the Thornhill area. “These are classic Italian films that you wouldn’t get to see otherwise in mainstream theatres; so if you love film, it’s a great opportunity to see all these classics in a cinema setting.” TIFF is also running a tribute the late Italian director, Vittorio de Sica, featuring his popular films in another series called More Than Life Itself, which also runs all summer until Sept. 6. Vaughan golfer swings to inaugural title By Michael Hayakawa

Vaughan’s Mark Ledo earned the very first gold medal for Canada at the Parapan Am Games.

Maple’s Mark Ledo won Canada’s first gold medal in his first Parapan Am Games. He won the men’s road race H3-5 Saturday at Ontario Place West Channel in a time of 1:22:17, 19 seconds ahead of silver-medallist William Lachenauer of the United States and bronze-medallist Charles Moreau of Canada. Ledo has competed in Paralympic Games previously, but in different events. At the London 2012 Games, the Vaughan athlete finished fifth in the mixed H1-4 team relay and was ninth in the individual time trial. At the Beijing 2008 Games, he competed in athletics, placing 28th in the men’s 5000m and 37th in the men’s marathon. Ledo has also earned a gold medal in the road race at the 2012 World Cup in Italy and bronze at the 2010 and 2011 World Championships.

Thornhill’s namesake to be remembered By Laura Finney

lfinney@yrmg.com

The federal government is helping Thornhill remember its past. July 31, then Thornhill MP Peter Kent announced that the Canadian Government will be providing just over $133,000 in funding through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program for improvements to the Thornhill Community Centre and Library. A major element of these improvements will include a statue of Thornhill’s namesake and earliest civil leader, Benjamin Thorne. “A dynamic figure in pre-confederation Canada, Thorne was a banker, a miller, a church leader, militia officer and politician,” said Kent. “Although not the first to settle in the original village, Thorne’s powerful leadership gave our community its name.” Kent made the announcement in front of a number of residents at the Thornhill Community Centre and Library, including a group of children who were part of the City of Markham’s day camps, and Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “I don’t think there is a more fitting way to … celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary than to honour those who helped create this nation,” said Scarpitti. Thornhill has changed a lot since Benjamin Thorne’s day, but it’s important to remember the past, the mayor added. “As much as it changes, we also want to make sure that we remember the history and

why we are all here — why this became such an important place.” And that fits in with the city’s motto “Leading While Remembering,” he said. The July 31 announcement was one of many approved through the national program across Ontario, including one made recently about the renovation of Veteran’s Square in Markham. The aim is to give back to Canadians while creating a lasting legacy, as the country prepares to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. According to the federal government, the program is expected to boost economic activity through infrastructure investments, build community based partnerships and modernize existing community facilities. “This project will generate jobs during the design and construction phase and will provide essential community services for generations to come,” said Kent. “And, in the statue of Benjamin Thorne — a worthy legacy of the Canadian Sesquicentennial.” The funding announcement came just days before Prime Minister Stephen Harper made an early election call. But Kent, again running as the PC candidate in the riding of Thornhill, said the timeline of these project announcements is not related to the election. “The timing is 2017, and it’s to be able to plan, design and actually erect the statues by 2017,” he said, “... we had to put the bids out and assess bids and make the announcements, otherwise we would lose virtually half a year.”

What about land swap for Rouge Park?

F

or parents of schoolage children, August is back-to-school season, that time of year when you are assaulted by a repeated barrage of ads telling you to get out there quickly to buy all the latest gear so your kids can compete and learn. Not to mention entreaties from your own children, who know that the only thing worse than heading back to school, is heading back to school with a battered knapsack, tattered binders and broken pens and pencils. For parents of adult children, however, the end of summer and fall’s season of “new beginnings” may bring a different dilemma. Thus I found myself this past weekend, clearing through and trying to organize clutter and old textbooks and school “stuff” of adult children. Some of you may recognize the controversial problem — how long do you leave a bedroom of a departed adult child intact before you re-purpose it to become a guest room, an office or an allpurpose storage room? I hasten to report that my “departed” daughter is alive and well, living with her boyfriend in nearby Peel Region. She only returns home occasionally to grab clothing items. So I asked her delicately and tactfully (as much as possible conveyed via text messages), if I could make her bedroom into a guest bedroom over the next few weeks. “You can always return home any time,” I reassured her, “you are always our daughter”. “Sure, no problem” was the breezy response, nicely letting me know that a better option if they ever had to move was available through bigger lodgings at her boyfriend’s family home in Guelph. So I opened her closet and peered under the bed, to begin my room re-purpose project. Yikes — I won’t describe too much of what I found under the bed, suffice to day that it entailed

Marney Beck at least half a laundry load of clothes. The closet yielded several pairs of shoes and sandals that I bet she’s completely forgotten about, along with numerous pretty dresses that had fallen in a tangle to the floor. However, I did find numerous fancy folders, shiny new binders and colourful notepads, some with price tags still on them. Rooting through several bags and boxes of my son’s college leftovers, which were gathering dust in a different closet, I found similar unused school supplies. I now have a collection of brand new and gently used school supplies to contribute to the Salvation Army school supplies drive in Richmond Hill and Vaughan. If you’ve got a similar collection of items languishing in cupboards or closets at your home, you can also contribute to the regional 360 Kids school supply drive. If you aren’t in my position and your younger children succeed in dragging you back-to-school shopping, every Staples store across York Region is running a Staples for Students School Supply Drive, collecting items required by needy children in your own community. Staples partners with the United Way in York Region and Optimist clubs to ensure the supplies get to less fortunate families. However stretched your school supply budget may be, it’s certain there are families in your community who are finding it tougher and who truly need a little back-toschool help.

A few weeks ago, the federal government added 5,000 acres to the Rouge National Urban Park from their Pickering airport block of lands. The remaining 9,600 Pickering acres are targeted for economic development. If the federal government were to consider swapping some of those Pickering economic development acres with the new owners of the 425-acre York Downs golf course for a smaller, but important, follow-up park expansion in the Rouge’s western drainage, would anyone living in Unionville or along 16th Avenue fail to applaud? York Downs straddles two of the Rouge’s largest tributaries, hosts some of this country’s best agricultural land, and by virtue of it being the last undeveloped open space in

Markham on 16th Avenue, keeps thousands of vehicles off already grid-locked roads. It would be interesting to hear if any of the three major parties, if elected in October, would explore (based on fair equivalent land value) such a swap of potentially enormous importance to this and future Unionville and Markham generations.

Cold air vent turned on boss Re: Sweater, socks are my office attire, column by Marney Beck, July 30. I always enjoy reading your columns in the paper. This column reminded me of my own office experience. We were three girls, sharing a freezing corner office in a brand new building. I

was the lucky one with the cold air outlet right over my desk. Instead of an old T-shirt, we stuffed several socks into the vent. Our boss next door was not a happy camper when the cold air started to blast down over his desk. :) I couldn’t resist sharing this tidbit with you and your readers.

The York Catholic District School Board presents a Newcomer Orientation Week program each summer. In partnership with Catholic Community Services of York Region, the York Region District School Board and Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the NOW program and similar Newcomer Orientation Day programs will run at select high schools throughout the region in late August and early September. All newcomer students who arrived in 2014 or 2015 and are entering Grade 9 are encouraged to register. “The newcomer orientation programs provide an informal, fun and informative opportunity for students, who are new to Canada, to adjust to high school life here in York Region, before school begins,” education director Patricia Preston said. “This greatly alleviates some first-day-ofschool nervousness that students may have, while also welcoming them to our school communities and helping them feel at home and become familiar with what is a new environment for them.” The program is designed to help students adjust to high school life in Canada through a series of interactive activities and information sessions. Activities such as school scavenger hunts will help participants learn about key school services. Other activities include a

Now, they are coming to Markham. This Sunday, Aug. 16, the internationally famous African Children’s Choir is performing in Markham. Not only will students have a better understanding of routines and general practices in local high schools, but they will also have the chance to make friends with other participants, meet peer leaders and former newcomer students. Registration is required and can be completed by contacting the settlements worker for the student’s particular school. Those interested in attending and who will be attending a school not hosting the program should contact Catholic Community Services of York Region at 905-731-8281. Police issue nationwide warrant for suspect in cafe murder By Tim Kelly

tkelly@yrmg.com

York Regional Police issued a Canadawide arrest warrant for the suspect wanted for the June double murder shooting at the Moka Café in Woodbridge.

Jason Hay, 27, is wanted in the June 24 shooting that left Christopher DeSimone, 24, and Maria Voci, 47, both of Vaughan, dead. Two other men were injured in the brazen early morning shooting at the café in the Hwy. 7 and

Islington Road area. They have since been released from hospital. Hay, of Mississauga, was captured on video the morning before the shooting pacing in front of the café. He is described as black, 6-foot, muscular build and is considered armed and dangerous. Police are asking him to seek legal counsel and to turn himself in immediately.

Anyone who recognizes Hay is asked not to approach him, but to call 911. The wanted man has been involved in a slaying before. Hay was given a sentence of manslaughter in 2009 for his part in the Nov. 3, 2007, slaying of David Latchana, 23, in Mississauga. Just 19 at the time of Latchana’s death, Hay was convicted after Justice Kenneth Langdon found him

guilty of “setting up the chain of events that led to Latchana’s death.” He reportedly helped killer Demar Duntin locate Lachana’s whereabouts. Duntin received a life sentence for the murder. Hay got a seven-year sentence in 2009 and reportedly served five years and two months. He told the judge, “f—k you faggot,” as he left the Brampton courtroom. - with files by TorStar

Our Water: An Epic Journey Where does our water come from and how does it get to our taps? The system that makes it happen is huge, hidden and fascinating. Here’s a glimpse of how it works. York Region provides drinking water to an estimated 1.1 million residents. More than 85 per cent of our water comes from Lake Ontario; the rest, from Lake Simcoe and groundwater. Before it reaches our taps, water is treated to make it safe to drink. Depending on where you live, drinking water might travel more than 80 kilometres to get to you. At the heart of our water distribution system are massive pumps, moving millions of litres of drinking water from treatment plants through watermains and large distribution pipes within the system. Through this vast underground network, water is driven upward over hills into special storage tanks and water towers. Water towers play a vital role in our drinking water system. They equalize pressure, provide large volumes of water for fire-fighting and provide an emergency supply if needed. Water towers hold up to 7,550 cubic metres of water, about as much as three Olympic-size swimming pools. From the lake – to a pumping station – to a water tower – to your taps, our water goes on an epic journey through a complex system that is rarely seen. We’ve taken videos that will open the door to our underground world. We think you’ll be amazed. Visit york.ca/wateris

Factors to consider when planning a home office As technology has made working remotely easier, more and more professionals are working from home. Working from home can help working parents save money on childcare costs and help all workers avoid rush hour traffic jams and the costs of commuting to and from the office. The right working environment is essential for men and women who work from home. An environment that’s conducive to work can help people increase their productivity and make their employers more likely to allow more employees to work from home. Professionals who are new to working from home may find it takes some time before they can create the perfect working environment, but the following are a few factors to consider when planning a home office.

SPACE One of the disadvantages to working from home is that remote workers don’t have access to the same level of equipment as in the main office, such as colour copiers or scanners. If you want to include even scaled-down versions of such equipment in your office, you will need ample space. In addition, less spacious home offices can feel too tight and enclosed, making

workers uncomfortable and less enthusiastic about working every day. Pick a spot in your home that affords room for your equipment and the ability to move around so you don’t feel cramped throughout the workday.

LIGHTING Lighting is another factor remote workers must consider when they’re planning their home offices. Natural light can provide an energetic boost and improve your mood, so choose a room in your home that gets lots of sunlight during the day. Many professionals who work remotely do so from the basements of their homes, which can make it difficult to rely on natural light. If the basement is the only location in your home that can fit a home office, look for lighting sources that replicate daylight so you are not working in dark quarters. Speak with your physician about how to arrange lighting to reduce eyestrain caused by staring at a computer.

CONNECTIVITY Connectivity also must be considered when planning a home office. While wireless Internet has made Internet dead zones less problematic,

certain areas or rooms in your home may still be touch-and-go with regard to Internet connectivity. Such areas should be avoided when choosing a room for your home office, as it can be difficult to remain productive if your connection to your office’s external server is routinely compromised. Find an area where the wireless connection is always strong.

DISTRACTIONS While your home might be empty for much of the day, you don’t want to be distracted when the

kids come home from school or when your spouse or roommate arrives home from work. Avoid putting your home office too close to popular hangout areas in your home, such as the kitchen and the living room. Instead, choose a room where you have lots of privacy so you can focus on your work and won’t be routinely interrupted. Working from home can pay numerous dividends, but professionals who telework must put careful thought into the rooms or areas of their homes where they plan to work.
