Residents seek ‘splashy’ addition By Simone Joseph

A refrigerated hockey rink may not be feasible for Grandview Park, says Thornhill Councillor Valerie Burke. “It is very expensive. Out of budget,” she said Monday in a phone interview. Options for transforming Grandview Park was the topic of discussion at a meeting Nov. 19, organized by the Grandview Area Residents Association in Markham.
About 70 people attended. Those advocating for a hockey rink wanted a refrigerated rink surface, Burke said. This was one of the options discussed — having a seasonal durable base for a community ice rink in winter and a skateboard park in summer. Other projects previously proposed by the community and approved by council for consideration include a splash pad and a band shell / outdoor stage to host concerts, movies
in the park and other events. Another alternative is a splash pad with outdoor washroom. When the World on Yonge condominiums (just north of Steeles Avenue and south of Clark Avenue) were approved, $2 million was negotiated under the Planning Act for amenities in the nearby west Thornhill area. Grandview Park is on the south side of Doncaster Avenue, behind Henderson Avenue Public School . See ‘CONSIDER’, page 3.

MS inspiration for ‘Viable’ film project Good to know
By Simone Joseph
sjoseph@yrmg.com
When Mary Gyulay complained that her eye was bothering her, Melissa Cultraro didn’t take her too seriously. After all, Gyulay had a very casual way of complaining that made her problem seem trivial. Now, Thornhill resident Cultraro knows better. She knows Gyulay has Multiple Sclerosis, a serious neurological disorder that has caused other symptoms for fellow student Gyulay, including fatigue, numbness and loss of feeling in fingers and down her arm, loss of memory at times and tight muscles and muscle pain. Gyulay was diagnosed about 1-1/2 years ago, at the age of just 22, a diagnosis she revealed to friends via Facebook. The one bright spot is that Gyulay’s discomfort and her struggle has inspired a film project, a fictional story based on her experiences. Gyulay was diagnosed at the beginning of her third year of Radio and Television Arts in the school of media at Ryerson University. A year later, she and a group of students from her program had to choose a topic for a thesis project. The group decided to focus on Multiple Sclerosis, calling their campaign Viable. Their project includes a 30-minute feature film that follows a young pianist who is diagnosed with MS days before her audition with a world-renowned music school. The project MELISSA CULTRARO includes a screening event and fundraiser in association with the MS Society of Canada to raise funds for MS research and treatment.

Thornhill’s Melissa Cultraro (third from left) is seen here with fellow students in Ryerson’s Radio and Television Arts program. Mary Gyulay (left) is seen in the feature film. In the movie, the main character struggles to apply eyeliner with basically only the use of one eye, an anecdote based on Gyulay’s own experience. That’s what I go through every day, she told Cultraro. The group started filming Nov. 22. Their mission includes making people aware of one very tricky aspect of the disease. “It’s invisible. You can’t see it. We want to reveal the struggle,” said Cultraro, the film’s production manager. Cultraro isn’t the only York Region native in the eight-member film group. Melissa Vasilev, from Richmond Hill, is also part of the group.
VIABLE’S executive producer and cowriter, Melissa Scicluna, approached Vasiliev this past May with a vision to go beyond a university thesis project. Since agreeing to be part of this creation, Vasiliev has learned much about the disease. “The biggest shocker for me was how young the disease can hit,” she said. This was an eye- opener for Cultraro, too. MS is most often diagnosed in young adults, aged 15 to 40, but it can also affect younger children and older adults, according to The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Canada also has a high number of cases overall, compared to other countries. Vasiliev is the digital content creator,

which includes taking an active role in social media. To help promote their campaign, she has connected to users on Instagram who use related hashtags in their posts (such as #MultipleSclerosisAwarness, #CureMS, and #MSWarrior). Some of the people who have contacted VIABLE to get involved in the project are still in high school. “This project is unique in the way its goal is far beyond the parameters set out by the assignment. The entire team is so passionate and driven and believes in its future success. Working on VIABLE is an experience unlike anything else I’ve worked on,” Vasiliev said. Gyulay is the co-writer and director of VIABLE and sometimes her illness causes her to feel tired, out of sorts and easily overheated. So, when the crew had to film a scene in a cramped washroom, Cultraro was worried about her. The lights were blaring and it was a hot, cramped area. Despite the less than ideal conditions, Gyulay was undeterred. Cultraro asked if she was all right. She replied: “I’m fine. I’m in the zone.” Recently, Gyulay told Cultraro that if she can keep on doing what she is doing (be creative in film) for the rest of her life, she would be happy. Cultraro believes the diagnosis should not be a dream-killer. “You may have to change some things in your life but it should never stop you doing what you love.” Apparently, despite her diagnosis, Gyulay is doing just that.

Grandview Area Residents Association chairman Ricardo Mashregi speaks at a Nov. 19 meeting for residents, with diagrams of possible park amenities displayed behind him.

The purpose of the meeting was to get comments, so city staff could go back and refine concepts, Burke said, adding a splash pad has been the favoured project. “If we had to choose one project, the splash pad should be the one chosen. It spans different age groups, parents and grandparents.” Staff will look at the comments and budget and come back with a feasible solution, she said. There was also discussion of the possibility of noise from the outdoor stage becoming a problem, Burke said. The park is very much a baseball park, so the challenge is fitting in new uses and maintaining the baseball part, she said. A staff report on the possibilities for Grandview Park is to be released next month. “We want to see something happen in 2016,”
said Burke, who had to leave the meeting early for a special council meeting. Grandview Area Residents Association chairman Ricardo Mashregi pointed out that along with the capital costs, an operating budget for ongoing maintenance, has to be considered, too. He wondered which venues Markham can afford according to the operating budget of the city and if the city’s operating budget can absorb costs. The next step for the park transformation is city staff have to work out the operating budget. Markham staff will prepare a brief to go before general committee. Markham council will then decide whether to give the plan final approval before the project goes out for tender, determining who will design and build the planned addons to the park.

York Regional Police is investigating after a dog died in a case of suspected antifreeze poisoning in Vaughan. The dog and its owner were out for a walk on Shawbridge Boulevard, in the area of Gidleigh Park Crescent near Hwy. 27 and Rutherford on Nov. 25 when the dog stopped and began eating something by a mailbox. Later that day, the dog became violently ill and by the next morning was too weak to walk. The dog was taken to a veterinarian who advised the owner that the symptoms the dog was suffering from were consistent with glycol (antifreeze) poisoning. By Nov. 27, the dog’s condition had deteriorated to the point that she had to be euthanized. York police were contacted Monday by the owner of the dog. Police found dog kibble that had been spread over a 15-foot area around a mailbox on Shawbridge Boulevard
Vaughan homeowner robbed at gunpoint Five masked men, armed with handguns, burst into a Woodbridge home Friday night, stealing cash and electronics, York police said. The incident happened at about 6:45 p.m. on Andrew Park Drive in the Hwy. 7/ Martin Grove Road area. Police said five men knocked on the door of the victim’s home, then forced their way in. One man was carrying a long gun and another was carrying a handgun. The victim was not injured. The suspects were all male, black, wearing dark clothing and masks covering their faces, police said. The investigation is ongoing and witnesses are encouraged to call police.
Effective September 1, 2006, the Ontario Municipal Board will only accept filing the appeal fee payment of $125.00 by certified cheque or money order.

Bridging cultural divide to honour deserving citizens
Tax cap right idea, but should be lower
O
ur news organization works hard to report on the ever-changing, multi-ethnic face of York Region and often covers and writes about events and activities of its many cultural organizations. However, truth be told, I’ve not attended many events presented by Islamic organizations in my community. That is until Sunday night, when I attended the second annual York Region Appreciation Dinner and Awards, presented at a Markham banquet hall by the Al Nadwa Islamic Education Centre of Richmond Hill. In addition to the usual internal “what should I wear” question many of us struggle with when attending a public event, as a woman, I also wondered whether I would need a head covering, and had a scarf handy in my purse just in case. I need not have worried. Our reporter, Kim Zarzour, and I received a very warm welcome — especially as she was to receive a media award from the Muslim nonprofit organization for her “excellence in community journalism”. Zarzour was honoured as one of eight people who help “foster greater cross-country cultural harmony in our diverse region,” as stated in the invitation. Two York Regional Police officers were among those honoured with awards: Det. Const. Maryam Alikhani, a hate crime prevention officer, and P.C. Ida Jankowska, from traffic safety, who was instrumental in stopping and arresting a man wanted for criminal activity and break-ins not only in York Region, but Peel and Halton as well. They earned well deserved applause as they stepped onto the stage, as did Richmond Hill firefighter Kevin Hutchings and York paramedic Brad MacMillan. Hutchings was honoured for his multi-faceted community involvement in Georgina with the food bank, 4-H club and co-ordinating a toy drive to help families through Yellow Brick House, the Salvation Army and other regional agencies.
Marney Beck MacMillan not only gives of himself at work as a paramedic, but on his own time he helped organize an alcohol injury prevention program for youth offered through Southlake and Markham Stouffville hospitals, called 3 Party. It re-creates the kind of trauma young people face by indulging in risky behaviour and decisions. One of the star award winners of the night is just 16, a Markham high school student called Mohammed Nasir. He was given the paparazzi photography treatment as he stepped on stage to get his entrepreneur award, for founding his own company, Supernova Aerospace, manufacturing Drones for Humanity to deliver aid around the world in disaster zones. Radha Bhardwaj of York’s Blue Door Shelters earned the community service award, while a second media award went to radio journalist Naheed Mustafa, whose work is heard on CBC, Radio Netherlands and the BBC, and who helps train journalists in Pakistan. Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow and Imams Dr. Saeed Faizi and Abdulhai Patel made direct or indirect reference to terror campaigns in Paris or here in Canada, and the vital need to bridge cultural divides and foster harmony and peace. Bringing cultural groups together for such award dinners bridges gaps between different cultures, reminding us we are all wanting positive role models for our young people, and we all want a safe and inclusive society. Turns out, I didn’t need to wear my headscarf. Even though we wore different clothing styles, we all felt a sense of belonging — right at home in our community.
This is citizen feedback delivered by email to the City of Vaughan during budget deliberations. A copy was forwarded to sister paper Vaughan Citizen. I would like to begin by thanking the mayor and city council for taking the time to solicit public input regarding the cities budget. I support the city in its mandate to cap tax increases, however I think that the per cent maximum allowed is rather high, and I am hoping that the city will reconsider this amount. To begin, the average wage increase in Ontario this year is projected to only be 2.5 per cent, furthermore the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is only up 1.3 per cent. As you can see the property tax increase proposed is significantly higher than the average wage increases citizens are getting as well as the overall CPI. If you also consider the significant increases Vaughan residents have experienced with electricity
and water rates, the cost of owning a home in this city has become unaffordable. My challenge to city staff and council is to not increase property taxes at all. Although this may sound farfetched, I am certain that if we are able to prioritize our initiatives we can achieve this. We must distinguish between what Vaughan residents need (eg. garbage pick-up, road repairs) versus what is nice to have.(eg. will spending more on transit increase rider-ship?, are building bike lanes necessary?). We should also consider other sources of municipal revenues. For example, can we rename community centres and sell these naming rights to corporations (similar to Air Canada Centre)? Could we look at increasing user fees for municipal government services? It would be great if the City of Vaughan would be the only municipality in the province to not increase property taxes on its residents! Think of all the seniors that live in our community who are struggling with fixed incomes. Young

Interfaith peace meal focuses on Aboriginal reconciliation By Amanda Persico
apersico@yrmg.com
For the Aboriginal community, reconciliation starts with education. That was the focus behind this year’s annual peace meal hosted by Mosaic Interfaith group in Thornhill. Sunday, Kim Wheatley, an Anishinaabe band member of the Shawanaga First Nation, spoke at the annual peace meal. Wheatley talked about Aboriginal struggles, which recently came to light through the Honouring the

Truth, Reconciling for the Future report published earlier this year by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, chaired by Justice Murray Sinclair. The report, which involved about six years of interviewing and listening to survivor stories, concluded with 94 recommendations and changes to be made across the country. The recommendations are more about action than words, with basic common sense and equality at the helm, she added. “When I first heard of it, I said, ‘Wow, that’s a lot’. Now, I say ‘That’s not enough’,” Wheatley said. “This has changed the face of Canada. It’s not a blame and shame.” Instead, the report is the beginning of a reconciliation and relationship building. And it wasn’t written for Aboriginal people. It was written for all Canadians, said Natalie Doucet, a pastoral associate at St. Luke’s Parish in Markham. “This is not an Aboriginal problem,” she said. “This is a Canadian problem. We have to take responsibility; that begins with awareness.” That was the reason for Sunday’s event at Temple Har Zion, she continued, to bring awareness to all the different local faith communities. The report looked at the residential school system, where more than 150,000 Aboriginal children were taken from their families and put in schools designed to assimilate them and wipe out their culture. More than 6,000 Aboriginal students died in the system. While the report touches on the residential schools, there is more to the complex issue, Wheatley said. There are basic rights, such as voting, education and access to running water that were not extended to Aboriginal peoples. “We are still wards of the crown. We didn’t get the vote until 1960. We were not considered human beings before then.” Her message is each person can do something to help build that relationship. “Pick one recommendation ... Make it a reality. This is not just another report sitting on a shelf.”

Marner gets shot at playing for Team Canada Mitch Marner took a giant step toward earning a berth on Canada’s national junior team after he was chosen to attend their selection camp in preparation for the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, to be held in Helsinki, Finland starting Dec. 26. The 18-year-old Thornhill resident, who currently plays with the London Knights of the OHL, was one of 30 players chosen to attend the camp to be held in Toronto from Dec. 10 to 14, Hockey Canada announced on Tuesday. A first-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2015 National Hockey League entry draft, Marner is in his third season with the Knights and has 15 goals and 32 assists in 22 regular season games
this year. Two other York Region residents were also named and included Oshawa Generals: forward Michael Dal Colle from Woodbridge and Erie Otters defenceman Travis Dermott from Newmarket. From the 30 players invited, the final roster will be comprised of 22 players. “We’re looking to assemble the best possible team to represent the country in Helsinki at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship. With the talent we have attending camp, it’s going to come down to some difficult decisions for us in selecting the players who make the final team,” said Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada vice-president of hockey operations and national teams, in a news release. Janet Walker Berton: a ‘local hero’
BY TIM KELLY
tkelly@yrmg.com
H
er husband Pierre is considered a national treasure, but Janet Walker Berton, in the words of their son Paul, was a “local hero”. Mother of eight, grandmother of 14, great-grandmother of one, Berton was also extremely involved for many decades in the Vaughan, Woodbridge and Kleinburg communities. She died Nov. 6 at the age of 95. “She was all the things you would expect in a great mother. She was a great citizen as well, a community member and a great host. She was really a unique person in a hectic world,” said Paul Berton, editor-in-chief of the Hamilton Spectator. Born in Fernie, B.C. in 1920, Janet Walker attended the University of British Columbia in 1938 and began work as a journalist at the Vancouver Daily Province in 1941, right after university graduation. It was while working for the Province that she met Pierre Berton, a rival reporter for the Vancouver Sun, and the two married in 1946. Pierre became assistant editor at Maclean’s in 1947 and the couple moved east, eventually settling permanently in Kleinburg in 1959. Berton was heavily involved in many different groups as a volunteer throughout her long life before she moved into a retirement home in 2004, the year of
Pierre’s death. She was a member of the Heritage Vaughan Committee, an executive member of the Kleinburg and Area Ratepayers’ Association (KARA) and the Kleinburg Binder Twine Festival. Berton was past president of the University Women’s Club of North York, a vice-president of the University Women’s Club of the –Paul Berton Town of Vaughan, editor of the national chronicle of the University Women’s Club of Canada and co-edited the 60-year history and 75-year history of the Canadian Federation of University Women. Berton also helped found HELP, an information and referral service in Vaughan. She volunteered for children’s home Dellcrest, the Kleinburg Home and School Association and Kleinburg United Church.

She received a Volunteer Service Award for her outstanding contributions in 1992. Paul Berton said his mother taught him, “how to cope with all kinds of different situations. “She taught me to try and look on the bright side of life, to get the most out of every minute of life, to really be helpful and be good to people whenever you could.” While Canadians became wellacquainted with his father Pierre, TV star of the long-running CBC show Front Page Challenge and author of 33 books, most of them bestsellers of popular Canadian history such as The Last Spike, The National Dream and celebrated children’s novella The Secret World of Og, it was Janet who was right by his side. “He (Pierre) was a great adventurer, but I’m sure most people who knew her would say that she was as great or greater as an adventurer for going along with it and always making the best of any situation,” said Paul of his mother. “He was the famous person and he was a great Canadian, but my mom was the true hero of the family and really the true hero of the community. She was very involved in Kleinburg and Vaughan and really cared about her neighbours and the neighbourhood and the community,” he said, characterizing his mother as a “local hero”. Paul Berton said one of his mother’s sayings was, “Aren’t we lucky in life?” “No matter what our challenges are, she would have wanted people to remember that. She was well aware of the hardship in the world and indeed some of the hardships
