Agriculture, art and athletes: The early history of Thornhill SIMONE JOSEPH sjoseph@yrmg.com In 1912, (J.The south-west corner of Thornhill’s Yonge and Centre intersection is now home to a Petro Canada gas station. But, if you could travel back in time to 1910, you would find the land being used for a very different purpose. Reflecting the prevalence of agriculture in this area, this
intersection was home to scales for weighing hay, cattle and grain. The scales were installed in 1867, just a week before Confederation. Local farmers and butchers used the scales to weigh loads of hay, grain or livestock, before taking them to markets in Toronto. Farmers from other locales, who were travelling through Thornhill, would stop to use

these scales. A monthly agricultural fair began in Thornhill with the purpose of selling farm stock around the same time as the installation. It is not known exactly when these scales were dismantled but it is estimated to have been in the early 1920s. In addition to appealing to farmers and butchers because of the usefulness of the scales, Thornhill was also appealing to
sports enthusiasts – specifically ice skaters and hockey players. Back in 1907, 15 shareholders joined forces to buy land just west of the Methodist Church on the north-west corner of Centre and Elizabeth Streets, with the hopes of building an arena. The work of these shareholders paid off when the arena, known as the Mammoth, officially opened O See GROUP, page 5

A BADLY PLANNED WILL A DAD’S GOOD INTENTION GONE BAD The Wills Lawyer Gary told the following story during a call-in show. His father, Percy, made his will at the height of the dot-com stock market surge. Percy’s stock portfolio was worth over five million dollars in the late nineties. He wanted to divide his growing estate among his many friends, his relatives and his two children, of whom Gary was one, and Denise was the other. It was important for Percy’s children to have the lion’s share of the estate, because they were his only children, and particularly because Denise was ill with multiple sclerosis. Just before making his will, Percy consulted with Gary and Denise, explaining that after he passed away, because of the value of his stock Les Kotzer portfolio, they would each be so wealthy that leskotzer.com they would never have money problems. But there were numerous others who really needed financial help, so that his will would contain many smaller gifts of money to those others. Gary, out of serious concerns about the medical and therapeutic needs that would arise over the lifetime of his sister, Denise, asked Percy what he meant by “numerous others”. Percy explained that counting all of his friends and cousins, there were twenty people, and each would get $10,000 dollars. A total of $200,000 dollars didn’t seem like a lot of money out of a total stock portfolio worth five million plus at the time, so Percy had the blessing of Gary and Denise, and the will was finalized along these lines. By the time Percy passed away, Gary had learned three hard lessons. First, he learned that five million dollars’ worth of internet stocks did not translate to five million dollars of currency after a stock market bubble bursts. Second, Gary learned about which gifts in a will get paid out first and which gifts are only paid, if there is money left over after the priority gifts are paid. The sad part of this lesson was that Percy’s friends and relatives got their money gifts first, leaving Denise and himself to split whatever was left after those money gifts were paid out. This followed the wording in Percy’s will which provided that Gary and Denise would split what was left over in Percy’s estate, after the money gifts were paid out to his friends and relatives. Third Gary learned how thankless people can be when he realized that Percy’s net worth after debts and taxes was only $230,000. This meant that, after $200,000 was paid out to Percy’s friends and relatives, Gary and Denise were left with $30,000 to split between them. What was the thankless part? Gary talked himself hoarse, begging Percy’s relatives and friends to give up their gifts so that the money would help Denise deal with her illness. He made a point of telling them that Percy would never have left his sick daughter in such a vulnerable position. Percy wanted to protect her. But not a single one of Percy’s friends or relatives agreed to consider Denise’s needs. Not one of them would give up their $10,000 gift from Percy’s will. Gary said that he and Denise were raised as givers, not takers. Gary gave all of his $15,000 inheritance from Percy’s estate to Denise and more beyond that out of his own money. What he had to give to the radio audience was one piece of advice to anyone making a will. Just because you’re rich today doesn’t mean you will always be rich.

on January 4, 1908. A women’s hockey team was created which competed with its male team for local attention. In the book Thornhill 1793-1963: The History of an Ontario Village written and illustrated by Thoreau MacDonald, there is a chapter by senior Willard Simpson. Simpson describes just how popular hockey was at that time: “Cars (of the radial line) were chartered to carry the home team and their supporters to distant games, and I must say that many of the N.H.L. play-offs seem quite tame in comparison to the rough and ready hockey of those days. When our boys played at Schomberg the car would be packed with standing fans, because residents there always welcomed us with open arms, and entertained with refreshments for everyone after the game.” In the 1919-20 season, the Thornhill women won the Ontario championship in a game played against Ottawa in the Toronto arena. But then hockey regulations changed, making it necessary to use larger rinks. Richmond Hill and Willowdale moved locations to follow the new regulations, but Thornhill did not. Interest in the local hockey teams decreased and The Metropoli-
tan League disintegrated because of decreasing use and eventual closure of the radial line. (The Toronto and York Radial Railway was a transit operator providing services to the suburbs of Toronto). It was a subsidiary of The Toronto Railway Company. It ran from 1904-1948. Thornhill’s prime location along Yonge Street, a major transportation route, provided a huge boon to the community’s growth during much of the 20th century. The introduction of an electric street railway on Yonge Street in 1898 towards Kleinburg, Georgina, and King made it possible for the first time for people to live in Thornhill and work in Toronto. Finally, in 1935, the shareholders decided to sell the Mammoth rink. By 1936, this rink had been torn down and replaced by a redbrick house (77 Centre St.) at the south-east corner of Brooke and Centre Streets. Aside from drawing hockey players, Thornhill also become known as fertile ground for artists. Group of Seven founder James Edward Hervey MacDonald (J.E.H.), began living in Thornhill in 1912. “His presence here encouraged several of his contemporary artist friends to join him. Four future members of the Group rented houses for brief periods, while other artists visited regularly for sketching outings,” accord-
ing to the Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill’s newsletter February 2016. MacDonald, his wife and their eleven-year-old arrived in Thornhill. They rented the brick house at 18 Centre St. When the owner decided to return to the house and live there himself in late 1913, the MacDonalds decided to buy the house and property at 121 Centre St. The property became known as Four Elms and soon drew visiting artists such as Group of Seven infamous painter Tom Thomson. The home and grounds at 121 Centre St. have been preserved so they appear much as they did during the time of the MacDonalds. J.E.H. painted “The Tangled Garden” at 121 Centre St. It now hangs in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Another of MacDonald’s works, “Morning Sunshine (The Artist’s Wife)”, painted in 1926, was clearly set close to the back door of his Centre Street home. Four other members of the Group of Seven followed J.E.H. MacDonald and lived for a short time in Thornhill: Arthur Lismer, Fred Varley, Frank Johnston and Franklin Carmichael. They rented houses on John Street between 1913 and 1920.

• OUR VIEW •
ABOUT US
There is no place for intolerance in our society A dashcam video depicting an unidentified male berating an elderly man on Old Kennedy Road, just north of Steeles Avenue East, in Markham surfaced earlier this month and its contents are disturbing to say the least. The video, shot by Markham’s Tony Cao and posted to YouTube, shows an older man, who walks with a heavy limp, moving across the frame when a younger man, dressed all in black, appears from behind him and inexplicably begins to taunt him and repeatedly refers to him as "monkey". When the younger man notices Cao, he angrily approaches his vehicle and shouts racist things at him. The footage came to light less than two weeks after a woman in a Toronto grocery store was filmed demanding that employees who didn’t speak English "go back to China" and the same week a Statistics Canada report emerged showing that the number of hate crimes in Canada rose by five per cent between 2014 and 2015 with the number of incidents targeting Muslims increasing by 60 per cent. Statistics Canada noted that its figures were based around police-reported hate crimes, so the numbers could be even higher as not all incidents are reported to law enforcement agencies. Cao did report what he saw and has turned his video over to York Regional Police who are now investigating. He went on to say that he’d never experienced a racist incident of any kind during the 10 years has called Canada home. "I’m truly shocked, I’m just sad to see this sort of thing in society in this beautiful, peaceful country," Cao told the York Region Media Group in an interview. "I only thought this type of thing would happen in America." It shouldn’t happen anywhere least of all in Canada. Fortunately, the majority of Canadians are appalled at this kind of behavior and it certainly isn’t indicative of who we are as a nation. Still, it’s clear from this video and the statistics there remains plenty of room for improvement and that’s why it’s important for those on the receiving end of racial abuse, or who witness such an incident, to report it to the proper authorities for what it is: a hate crime. Similarly, we should be vigilant for discrimination that targets any group. Simply put, there’s no place for intolerance such as this in our society.

• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Minimum wage increase will harm small businesses Re: Wage increase could mean job losses, higher consumer costs: chamber, May 31. Dear Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne: On behalf of our membership and the dry-cleaning and laundry industry, I wish to advise you of our grave concern about your decision to raise the minimum wage from $11.40 to $15, a 41 per cent increase. Added to this is the cost of matching funds to finance CPP, OHIP, and other payroll taxes. As well, you have added another week to the vacation pay schedule and included part-time works in your increases. This policy will cause havoc in the dry- and wet-
cleaning industry, as well as many other small businesses. Most of the operators in our industry are small family businesses which are currently struggling with a difficult economy and high utility prices. Our industry is currently faced with increased rents due to the real estate market, increased costs to insure that all our plants are environmentally safe and follow best practices, as well as added costs under the Boiler and Pressure Vessels Act to adhere to current and new TSSA regulations. I have been contacted by many of our membership who expressed the facts that they will have to

shorten the hours they provide service to their clients and will not be able to hire students and other part-time staff in order to be able to afford the additional payroll costs. Having a minimum wage of $15 for any person without any work experience forces the businesses to raise their wages even higher in order to attract competent people to perform the necessary jobs such as knowledgeable counter staff, pressers, and other positions in the industry. This policy will force business to both raise their prices to the public and thus lose business and lead to many having to close up. I would be pleased to meet with you to discuss
alternatives to this very damaging policy that will have an everlasting effect on many families and small businesses. Sidney Chelsky Executive Director, Ontario Fabricare Association

Vaughan Pizzafest gets cooking July 14 ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Start saving up your dough, Vaughan Pizzafest is back and it’s going to be even bigger than last year, organizers say. "We’re going to have more pizza and a really big entertainment lineup," Remo Palladini, event founder and chair, said. "We’ve got Stevie B and Joee on Friday night ... Then on Saturday night we’ve got Men Without Hats and then Sunday we have David Usher from the band Moist." This year’s instalment, featuring 18 to 20 pizzerias, gets cooking Friday, July 14 and runs through to Sunday, July 16 at the Woodbridge Fairgrounds, 100 Porter Ave. Among the pizzerias serving up steaming hot slices and personal-sizes pizzas are Nonna’s Oven from Richmond Hill, Ricci’s Pizzeria & Sandwich Shop and Pie Wood Fired Pizza Joint from Woodbridge plus Queen Margherita Pizza and Via Mercanti. You can wash it down with some cold beer from Moosehead, Hop City and locally brewed Lake Wilcox Brewing Co. There’ll also be hard ciders, hard sodas and other offerings for non-beer drinkers. The event also offers a slew of family friendly entertainment including a midway with a Ferris wheel, soccer, badminton, and an appearance by world champion pizza tosser Justin Wadstein. Palladini expects huge crowds to descend on the fairgrounds. About 16,000 pizza lovers devoured nearly 60,000 slices of pizza last year, he said. So, they’ve made adjustments to try to better manage the long lineups that plagued the inaugural event. "We’re copying ideas from other events, what’s good from
those events, and taking what we had problems with last year and improving on that," Palladini said. Admission costs $10 per person then you can purchase food and drink tickets for $1 each,

Tenants no longer have to worry about their rent being unreasonably hiked, York Region’s Liberal MPPs promise. Queen’s Park has passed new legislation called the Rental Fairness Act, which prevents landlords from unfairly boosting lodgers’ rents. It expands rent controls to all private rental units, including those occupied after Nov. 1, 1991, which had been exempt in the past. Landlords can’t raise rents more than set guidelines, which this year is 1.5 per cent. Any rent increase given above this on or after April 20 must be reduced to 1.5 per cent. The legislation also protects tenants from eviction due to abuse of the "landlord’s own use" provision and ensures landlords can’t pursue former tenants for unauthorized charges. Landlords can continue to apply to the Landlord and Tenant Board for above-guideline rent increases where permitted. They can also determine rent levels for new tenants. York’s Liberal MPPs praised the legislation. "In the face of dramatic rent increases and unfair practices, our government is answering the call to bring fairness and predictability to Ontario’s rental housing system," Housing Minister and Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard said. "With the changes under the Rental Fairness Act, Ontarians can rest assured that they will continue to have an affordable place to call home."

Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is upgrading its commuter rail system into Regional Express Rail. The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is now home to nearly 7 million people and heading towards 10 million by 2041. To address the urgent transit needs of the GTHA, the Province of Ontario committed to implement Regional Express Rail and make other improvements to the GO system. By 2025, electrified trains will be running every 15 minutes or better, all day and in both directions, within the most heavily travelled sections of the GO network.

Notice of Commencement and Public Meetings GO Rail Network Electrification Transit Project Assessment Process
The Process Metrolinx and Hydro One are co-proponents, jointly carrying out the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 - Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings (made under the Environmental Assessment Act) to examine the environmental impacts of converting several GO rail corridors from diesel to electric propulsion. The Project As part of Regional Express Rail, Metrolinx is proposing to electrify GO-owned corridors. The GO Rail Network Electrification undertaking will entail design and implementation of a traction power supply system and power distribution components located along and within the vicinity of the rail corridors. The Study Area (see key map) includes six GO rail corridors, as well as proposed locations for the traction power facilities (i.e., Traction Power Substations, Paralleling Stations, Switching Stations) and ancillary components: • • • • • •
Union Station Rail Corridor Lakeshore West Corridor – West of Bathurst St. to Burlington Kitchener Corridor – UP Express Spur (at Highway 427) to Bramalea Barrie Corridor – Parkdale Junction to Allandale GO Station Stouffville Corridor – Scarborough Junction to Lincolnville GO Station Lakeshore East Corridor – Don River Layover to Oshawa GO Station
Traction Power Supply and Distribution System Electrification of the GO Network requires a connection to the provincial electrical system. It is proposed that power be supplied from Hydro One’s existing 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines through the installation of five (5) Tap locations which will bring power to the Traction Power Substations (TPS) and then feed into the power distribution system components adjacent to and along the rail corridors to be electrified. Consultation Building on the first and second rounds of public consultation meetings held in February/March 2016 and November 2016, Metrolinx and Hydro One are now formally commencing the TPAP. A third round of public consultation is planned for June/July 2017 (details below) and will present the findings of the technical/environmental studies (posted online at www.gotransit. com/electrification) undertaken for the GO Rail Network Electrification Project. Members of the public, government agencies, Indigenous communities and other interested parties are encouraged to participate in the process and/or contact the project team directly with feedback or questions. A discussion guide will be posted online at www.gotransit.com/electrification prior to the meetings to provide key information. We invite you to join us in person at the public meeting nearest you to find out more. Yonge subway extension gets $36M federal boost LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com
The extension of the Yonge Street subway from Finch subway station to Richmond Hill is another step closer. Preliminary engineering and design work on the 7.4-kilometre extension is set to begin, federal, provincial and regional politicians announced at a news conference at the Richmond Hill transit terminal on June 16. Federal Health Minister and Markham-Stouffville MP Jane Philpott, Ontario Transportation Minister and Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca and York Region chair Wayne Emmerson announced more than $36 million in federal funding at the event. "This project is the No. 1 rapid transit priority of York Regional council for good reason," Emmerson said. "It will allow us to keep up with the tremendous growth we are experiencing, it will virtually eliminate the 2,500 daily bus trips now required to service this section of Yonge Street and it will be the catalyst for job creation and the development of more affordable housing options." The federal funding is in addition to about $55 million from the provincial government to continue design work on the project. Metrolinx has identified the subway extension as a priority project for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

Over 84% of the people who work at your LCBO store have no choice but part-time. Shifts can be as short as two hours. Some of them work every day for weeks in a row just to get enough hours to scrape by. And even if they’ve worked for the LCBO for 10 or 15 years, they’re no closer to getting a full-time position.

Canadian CRISIS
Quebec referendum of 1995 decided by razor-thin margin for Canada The 1995 Quebec referendum was decided by the slimmest of margins as Quebeckers voted 50.58 per cent to 49.42 per cent to remain in Canada. Turnout in the Oct. 30 vote was 93.52 per cent, the largest ever in the province, and was surprisingly close after the “No” vote rejecting sovereignty and remaining in Canada was strong at the outset of the campaign. But led by a strong push by Lucien Bouchard, the “Yes” side, supporting independence and sovereignty, gathered momentum in the final weeks and made the outcome razor thin.

At the conclusion of the EA Study, the ESR will be provided to the City of Vaughan. The City will then determine whether or not to issue a Notice of Study Completion as a co-proponent and file the ESR for public review. EVERYONE SAVES Konikoff family photo
Erin Konikoff of Thornhill rode in the Becel Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart on Sunday, June 4 alongside her father. Konikoff suffered a stroke in utero which led to a variety of physical challenges. Her father, Michael, had aortic valve replacement surgery at Toronto General Hospital in 2014. The Konikoff family’s goal is to raise $100,000. at all. "Living with a stroke has always been a challenge, but never a barrier. I have been able to participate in almost all of the activities that all of the other kids have," she said during a speech she gave at the University of Western Ontario when she was 19. "I’ve had a tough life trying to get over my disability, but I am so proud of myself for being able to live with my stroke like I do. It has come to the point where I barely think about it on a daily basis. It always surprises me how well I am able to do anything I put my mind to, despite my disability". The Konikoff family had wanted to raise $10,000 and ended up raising more than $11,000. Ride for Heart participants raised more than $6
million. Money raised will support 850 researchers across Canada. The ride was a rewarding experience but certainly had its challenges, Erin Konikoff said. "Most of it was pretty hard because the bike was over 100 pounds and it was raining," she said. "We had a lot of fun despite the rain and felt extremely accomplished at the end of the 25k". The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s free online tools, include the My Heart&Stroke Risk Assessment, the 30 Days Challenge App, the Healthy Weight Action Plan and the Blood Pressure Action Plan. Tools aim to help Canadians lower their risk. Go to rideforheart or heartandstroke for more information.

Erin Konikoff ’s mother realized there was something wrong with her daughter when she was only nine months old. How did she know there was a problem? She knew because of the way her baby was holding her bottle. Erin held the bottle with her right hand, which was squeezed into a fist. Later, when Erin was one year old, a CAT scan determined that she had suffered a stroke in utero which left her with hemiparesis, a weakness in her right arm and leg. Erin was taught to be left-handed because of the weakness in her right hand. From the age of one, she went for treatment and rehabilitation at a children’s hospital now called Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Her treatment included Botox injections to reduce the rigidity in her legs. "It was all pretty hard," she said. The Thornhill native, 21, is proud of what she has accomplished, including completing the 30th annual Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart with her father, which they completed on a tandem bicycle on Sunday, June 4. The ride helps support critical lifesaving research. Erin’s father, Michael, had more than one reason to ride. In 2014, he had aortic valve replacement surgery at Toronto General Hospital. This procedure involves replacing a person’s aortic valve with an artificial heart valve. Five months after open heart surgery, he participated in the Ride for Heart. As a child riding on the back of her father’s bicycle, and then on a merrygo-round with her mother, Erin remembers asking where her right leg was because she couldn’t feel it

SHOWCASE Escape to your outdoor oasis with the latest patio trends Markham Stouffville Richmond HIll Thornhill
Thursday June 22, 2017 *sales representative **broker ***broker of record
ing sets used to be the most popular patio item, but summers are meant to be social so consider changing it up with a chat set or sectional. They’re designed to mix food and entertaining by incorporating lower tables and comfortable, open seating.
When the warm weather finally hits, Canadians are eager to get outside, kick back and relax with friends and family. Whether you’re starting from scratch or refreshing your already enviable patio, there are more options than ever to make your backyard retreat the perfect place to disconnect and unwind.
Extend the season. The window of opportunity to enjoy the warm weather is short-lived, so look for ways to warm up your space and enjoy it well into the fall. A fire pit is the new must-have patio product for the year — they’ve come a long way in style and functionality to become a true centrepiece for your space. You can also add outdoor rugs, throw cushions and string lights to help create a warm ambiance.
Megan Schroeder, patio merchant for The Home Depot Canada shares some of this year’s top trends in outdoor living. Make the most of small spaces. Get away from the urban grind by turning your balcony into a cozy hideaway. Combine style and function with a beautiful bistro set that has a smaller footprint, and look for multi-function products like a wicker storage box that can double as a table or ottoman.
