Conservatives pick wrong battle with veterans Conservative government closes multiple Veterans Affairs offices. ISSUE:
C
anadian veterans found themselves in another battle this week, but this time it was against our own government and, this time, they lost. The Conservatives closed eight Veterans Affairs offices — Kelowna, B.C.; Saskatoon, Sask.; Brandon, Man.; Thunder Bay and Windsor, Ont.; Sydney, N.S.; Charlottetown, PEI; and Corner Brook, N.L — Friday and then, Monday, voted down a lastditch-effort motion by the NDP that would have kept them open. The Conservatives say the office cuts coincide with a drop in demand. Service Canada centres will offer assistance in affected areas and there will also be Veterans Affairs Canada services online. But veterans argue the service won’t be the same. On the face of it, the Conservative government is finding efficiencies and savings, so they’re eliminating 100 jobs as a result of a decrease in service needs. But as much as Canadians want a reduced deficit, most of us do not want to see the men and women who fought for our rights and freedoms left out in the cold. It’s hard to condone going after our aging war heroes in light of the continued scandals that waste taxpayers’ money. Why not go after the expenses of MPs and senators? Bev Oda had her wrist slapped over switching a London reservation from a five-star hotel to an even more expensive accommodation. She also hired a chauffeur to drive her around in a luxury car and signed off on $16 glasses of orange juice. She was forced to repay some of the illegal claims only after the
expenses came to light. Unfortunately, that’s not an isolated incident. There’s a troubling sense of privilege among elected officials that’s exposed regularly. What about the plum pensions they receive?
It’s hard to condone going after our aging war heroes in light of the continued scandals that waste taxpayers’ money. Even after the most recent changes, which mean MPs will have to wait until 65 to collect their full pension, instead of the current age of 55, they still qualify for the lucrative plan after serving six years in office. And, of course, there’s the most recent scandal that saw senators incorrectly claiming expenses. The Veterans Affairs cuts don’t have a direct impact on York Region, but it’s fair to say this is a bitter taste of the future under this government. In fact, the government is expected to cut 784 Veterans Affairs jobs in the next two years. We don’t doubt there will come a time when tough decisions have to be made. But leave our veterans alone and find the savings elsewhere. This government needs to show more respect to the men and women who fought for this country.
Program cuts are a fact of life right now, but going after veterans now is wrong move.
BOTTOM LINE:
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Yes, some Thornhill people earn minimum wage Re: Martow blasts Liberals’ minimum wage plan as feel-good message, Jan. 30. Behind the carefully manicured lawns of our Thornhill neighbourhood lies a story that some in our community wish not to hear about. It is the story of the minimum wage workers who live among us. Who are they? The mom who struggles to pay her rent in a Thornhill basement apartment who wants to give her child a better life. The multiple students who strive every day to find ways to top up their RESPs by juggling school work and part-time retail jobs. They are the young people, fresh out of university and college, who believed that higher education was a ticket to a better life. They are the friends and the neighbours and the children of those living in our community. They are some of the faces behind the beautiful brick houses. They are a microcosm of communities throughout Ontario. Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that minimum wage in Ontario will soon be raised to $11 an hour. Some wish to frighten us by saying that it will either kill jobs or cause businesses
to go out of business. I disagree with this premise. Small and large companies will, for the most part, adapt to this change. They will need to raise their prices slightly to offset the additional overheads due to the increase in minimum wages paid to their employees. Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz warned about the dangers of disinflation that could shrink our economy. Raising the minimum wage can result in companies raising prices slightly, which could help prevent disinflation. This is a case for raising the minimum wage of workers. The bigger case, though, is that it is the right and decent thing to do.

They filled Vaughan City Hall council chambers, the multi-purpose room and the overflow room all to debate a condo tower and townhouse development proposal at Bathurst Street and Rutherford Road last night. Residents of the Thornhill Woods community were out in force and spoke in numbers about their opposition to the two 17-storey towers and 61 three-storey townhouse units brought forward by the Islamic Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaat of Toronto, at 9000 Bathurst St. The four-hour-long meeting went along at a fast clip, chaired by Thornhill Ward 5 Councillor Alan Shefman, who made it clear at the outset he would brook no “views that are unacceptable to the dignity of our proceedings, you’ll be cut off and asked to leave the chamber. It’s your responsibility to keep this discussion focused on the issues and respectful at all times”. With only a few exceptions, the dozens of deputants — the vast majority of whom spoke against the application — followed the rules to the letter and the crowd was extremely well-behaved and respectful given the emotions and underlying con-
cerns of the mainly Jewish residents living near the Muslim developers and their plans to build the development adjacent to the Jaffari Community Centre. Rom Koubi, a resident of Ner Israel Drive who rallied support in opposition to the housing proposal, told the councillors and the massive crowd, “the applicant request does not make sense in Thornhill Woods. Everyone is welcome regardless of race, religion and from any other resident in this neighbourhood. We are here fighting for a right to be free to choose what will be the future for our community. Your voters are sincerely concerned about this so-called application. Why should there be an additional community in our neighbourhood? How can the applicant claim a cultural centre when it is excluding the majority of the residents of our neighbourhood?” He later said in an interview that the “plan from top to bottom is completely inconsistent with official plan amendment and zoning bylaws and I believe this specific application should not be approved, but if they (ISIJ) approach with something decent, and they meet our needs, it should be considered.” Elena Serebryany, who also lives on Ner Israel Drive and has been a resident there for six years, said she
first heard about the plan for the units two weeks ago and said she “didn’t understand the plan. “I’m concerned about having a segregated community. As Canadians, we all want to have an inclusive community, that’s my concern.” She said homes around the Jaffari Cultural Centre, which currently sits on the property, are subject to parking issues and worries those will only increase if the development is approved as presented. For Ahmed Sagarwala, 33, who lives in Vaughan near Keele and Major Mackenzie, the development would represent exactly what he’s looking for. He spends a lot of time at the Jaffari Centre, both as a volunteer and employee and said he would love to move in there in future. “It seems natural to move closer to where you live. Some people say ‘I work in Mississauga, I live in Vaughan,’ I find that ridiculous,” he added. “It only adds to congestion, some of the points raised by the people contradict themselves. I think people should be moving closer to where they spend the majority of their time.” Mr. Sagarwala said he is a strong advocate for other faiths using the Muslim Centre and facilities as well

as living at the proposed development but said, “there are some issues when it comes to alcohol, pets, conduct of people, as Muslims we’re not supposed to reveal ourselves as a male or a female. If we have a swimming pool, for example, we would have to have separate sessions for males and females, a lot of people would appreciate that.” For Shabbir Jeraj, president of the ISIJ, the organization proposing the development, the meeting “went very well, this is citizens exercising their rights. It’s democracy at work. I was really excited. We did expect huge crowds from both sides and that was also gratifying. It’s a process and it will go forward.” He said opponents of the proposal will have time to digest what is being put forward and consider it. “Our first take is most of them have heard about it for the first time. This project has been evolving as far as we are concerned. We have taken into consideration several things to make the property more acceptable to the neighbours.” Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco, who represents the North Thornhill/Concord area that encompasses the neighbourhood affected, said she’s hopeful a compromise can be reached by both sides. She moved that a task force be struck between
the residents, developer and staff to come up with a deal that suits all parties and report back to council. That motion was approved unanimously by committee members. Ms Racco, in the teeth of a byelection in which she is running as the Liberal candidate for Thornhill riding which also includes the affected area, said she was pleased at the tone of the debate. “It was extremely well done. I think it was good, we were able to hear people who are opposed and people who actually supported it. People may not agree on each side, it’s about hearing everybody’s comments.” She said she’s convinced a tradeoff position can be reached. “I’m a positive person. When you bring people together, when they sit down calmly and work the differences out they can come to some type of commonality. It’s at least something that’s going to be acceptable to everybody and to our staff. I hate to have it go to the Ontario Municipal Board. You lose everything, you lose control, that’s not the way you want to do it. If we bring the community together, with our applicant, with our staff, let’s try to work this out.” FRONT PAGE photo shows Shabbir Jeraj and Shafiq Punjani of the Islamic Shia organization.

As part of your community, our employees fully understand how important it is to deliver safe and reliable power to you, and OUR community, regardless of the circumstances. When the ice storm at the end of 2013 caused more than 92,000 of our customers to lose their power at the start of the holidays, restoring service as quickly as possible became more than just being important, it was personal. We immediately responded to the crisis and worked as hard as we could to get the job done under very difficult conditions. At PowerStream, we know that the electricity we deliver is essential in supporting our customers’ quality of life. Without it, customers affected by the ice storm had no heat or lighting and were not able to power up other important household appliances such as refrigerators and stoves. Federal, provincial heavyweights endorse Martow, Racco Expected frontrunners Gila Martow of the Progressive Conservatives and Sandra Yeung Racco of the Liberals were campaigning hard last weekend as they look ahead to the Feb. 13 byelection in Thornhill. Ms Martow got some high-level Conservative support from her Ottawa colleagues as federal Thornhill Conservative MP Peter Kent and Ottawa-Nepean MP and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird joined her at a local campaign event Sunday. “I am proud to lend my endorsement to Dr. Gila Martow in her campaign to become Thornhill’s next MPP. Gila is a strong voice for her community and a tenacious advocate for Thornhill. I look forward to calling her my provincial partner, proudly representing
Thornhill as the new member of provincial parliament,” Mr. Kent said. Ms Yeung Racco, a native of Hong Kong who came to Canada as a young woman, appeared at Chinese New Year events with Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne and Markham-Unionville MPP Michael Chan, who is also Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport and Minister Responsible for the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. The group travelled to the Galleria Mall to meet local residents and wish them a Happy Lunar New Year, before heading to nearby malls. “It’s fitting that I’m here with Sandra Yeung Racco to celebrate the Lunar New Year, because she really demonstrates the positive approach that this time of year is all about,” said Ms Wynne.

This Sunday, the African Caribbean association will present a short film entitled Africville – Can’t Stop Now from 2 to 4 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Vaughan City Hall. It was an emotional father son bonding moment. Last Thursday, Thornhill resident Eric Lakien made his 200th blood donation. Not only was his son, Joshua, among the family members cheering this generous accomplishment, but Joshua also made his very first blood donation at the same time. The Lakien family came to the Hillcrest Mall permanent blood donor clinic in Richmond Hill, along with close friends. Mr. Lakien invited them to consider giving blood during his milestone 200th blood donation, which is an impressive accomplishment, as it can take nearly three decades to achieve. Four family members and friends did accept Mr. Lakien’s challenge, and gave blood with him, including son Joshua, who rolled up his sleeve for the very first time. Standing by his son’s side, Mr. Lakien commented how proud he was. “To see him in that chair, with the blood flowing into the bag, was very emotional. I was very proud of two things – of course, that he had donated — but also that I had motivated him to give.” Canadian Blood Services requires more than 80,000 new donors to give blood each year to support the ongoing demand for blood and blood products. With the collection of five blood donations
It was dad’s 200th blood donation, and his son’s very first when Eric Lakien (left) of Thornhill made his milestone donation last week, along with son Joshua. last week from the Lakien family, someone undergoing heart surgery would now have enough blood to survive. More than 500 appointment slots need to be filled during the month of February at the Hillcrest Mall clinic. Rally your family and friends to give blood together by calling 1-888-2DONATE (1-888236-6283). To find a clinic near you, go to blood.ca

NDP leader, Thornhill candidate offer solutions NDP leader Andrea Horwath and Thornhill NDP byelection candidate Cindy Hackelberg sat down with reporter Tim Kelly to talk about where they stand on the issues. For the full interview, go online to yorkregion.com Q: What are three top priorities for Thornhill? A. Cindy Hackelberg: The first one is health care, without a doubt. There are people from all walks of life in Thornhill. The issue I hear the most about, first off, is the need for better health care from our doctors and nurses and also homecare. There are a number of people who are waiting for homecare and the waiting times are much, much too long. It’s hard for those who need it and it’s very hard for those who are concerned about their loved ones, so this is something I think is requiring a lot of improvement throughout the province and here in Thornhill. The second issue is job creation. Although many people have the sense that Thornhill is a very wealthy riding and that is true — there are a number of people who are very well off — it’s also very true there are a number of people who are struggling and I see it on the doorstep.
I see people who are working very hard, they’re working two jobs or even three jobs as Andrea [Horwath] mentioned earlier and that’s a big problem. We need to make people able to get the jobs that they need and the youth, in particular, too. We’ve worked very hard to try to create youth jobs and more investment needs to be done in that way. We need to make sure it’s more equitable and more people are able to find employment. The third issue for me would be transit. I am a commuter, I’m probably the only candidate who is a commuter, I don’t know if the others are, but I haven’t heard anything to that effect. I travel to Toronto every day for my job. And, I go with the GO Train. Even though Thornhill is only 20 km from Toronto, for me to go to and from work takes twoand-a-half hours and the transit options are not very frequent, either. If I look at the Lakeshore lines, they go every 10 minutes in rush hour. If I don’t get the 5:30 p.m. train on the way home, it’s another 75 minutes to Thornhill (Union to Langstaff in Thornhill). That’s hard, there are thousands, 2,000 people every day, taking the Richmond Hill line, that’s hard when there aren’t transit options in the city to make it easier in Thornhill.

To have one or a couple of players on one team earn athletic scholarships in the United States in one season is generally considered a good accomplishment. But the Glen Shields FC 96 girls team raised the bar when 14 team members confirmed yesterday their intentions to attend U.S. universities on soccer scholarships this fall. That group included: Goalkeeper Devon Kerr, who announced her commitment to Ohio State University; defender Victoria Pickett (University of Wisconsin); defender Daniella Dell’Aquila (University of St. Thomas at Houston); defender Jordane Cavery (Louisiana State University); defender Kendra Prince (Oakland University); midfielder Emma Pozzulo (University of Pittsburgh); midfielder Ashley Moreira
(University of Pittsburgh); forward Amy Rowe (University of Louisiana-Monroe); forward Michaela DiCianna (Duquesne University); forward Taylor Pryce (University of Pittsburgh); forward Ocean Parr (University of South Florida); forward Simone Wark (University of South Carolina); forward Veronica Bosco (University of Memphis) and forward Cassidy Kunicyn (University of Louisiana-Monroe). In addition, five other team members turned down U.S. scholarship offers and elected to study and play at Canadian universities. — Michael Hayakawa

Andrew Wang accomplished something no other member of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s fencing team has done since 2006 after taking to the floor at the Ontario University Athletics championships in Hamilton last weekend. The Thornhill resident claimed the Schwende Trophy after capturing the men’s individual championship and propelling the Varsity Blues men’s sabre team to top honours in that discipline. Wang’s performance also earned him the George Tully Trophy as male fencer most proficient in skill, style and sportsmanship. Along with claiming the two trophies and helping the Varsity Blues’ fencing team claim bronze in the team championships, the Faculty of Medicine student was named an OUA all-star. The University of Toronto also honoured Wang by naming him their male athlete of the week for the period ending Feb. 2.
Rebels grab tournament title The Thornhill Rebels defeated the Humber Valley Sharks 4-2 to claim the Midget Junior Division title at the inaugural Hillcrest Summits Select Tournament in North York last weekend. Enbridge gets OK for pipeline to run under Markham, Hwy. 407 Enbridge Gas Distribution has been given clearance to go ahead with a $686.5-million pipeline expansion project in Greater Toronto, which will pass through Markham. There will be a connection to an existing pipeline at a proposed Buttonville station. And Union Gas has been granted approval to proceed with another $423 million of projects in the GTA that will help it move gas to customers in eastern Ontario, and improve reliability on its system. The Ontario Energy Board released the decision Thursday. Construction is expected to begin in late 2014 and finish in October 2015. The decision was greeted with disappointment by green groups, who had argued that better energy conservation measures could eliminate the need for the projects. They also objected that the expansion will let more shale gas flow into Ontario. Most of the new pipe — which Enbridge says is needed to serve growing customer demand — will be laid along
the Hwy. 407 corridor. Enbridge had said the upgrade is needed because its system in the GTA has not had a major expansion since 1992. “Like adding lanes to Hwy. 401, we are adding pipe to our distribution system to meet the increased natural gas transportation requirements of our customers,” the company explained on its website. If the project didn’t proceed, Enbridge warned that a crucial distribution station in Toronto’s Port Lands, serving the city core, could run short of gas as soon as the winter of 2015-2016. In a worst-case scenario, it warned, 270,000 customers might run out of gas. Reliability isn’t the only factor, Enbridge’s Malini Giridhar said in an interview. “It also allows us to source lower cost supply,” she said. “This project can also be leveraged for the rest of Ontario and Quebec to have access to these supplies.” The board accepted the broad objectives of the projects. — Torstar News Service
