York MPs weigh in on climate change BY LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com

13 drivers arrested for impairment on weekend PAGE 5

About 150 York Region residents helped get the conversation started on climate change at a town hall meeting in Newmarket Tuesday night. Hosted by the region’s Liberal federal politicians, NewmarketAurora MP Kyle Peterson, KingVaughan MP Deb Schulte, Richmond Hill MP Majid Jowhari and

Vaughan-Woodbridge MP Francesco Sorbara, the event is part of a national discussion launched by the federal government. Ottawa has pledged action on the growing concern of climate change, Peterson said. In March of this year, after meeting with First Nations, Inuit and Metis leaders, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau outlined the vision and principles that will guide Canada

as we move toward sustainable and clean economic growth, he said. “Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, but also one of the greatest opportunities.” The national conversations are giving residents in the region and across Canada the opportunity to share their ideas as Canada develops its plan for encouraging clean growth and tackling climate change,

Peterson said. Canada needs to make sure the environment and the economy are growing together rather than against each other, Schulte added. “Climate change is real. Climate change is going to bring very significant changes to the water cycle, to temperature, to invasive species, to more severe storms,” she said. To read the full story, go to yorkregion.com

ROOTCAUSES of bidding wars

Graham Jones brokered the deal that made $180,000 extra on this property at Mill Pond Court and Rumble Avenue in Richmond Hill. The property was listed at $899,000 and sold for $1,080,000. CHRIS SIMON

csimon@yrmg.com

If you’re planning to buy a house in the Greater Toronto Area, be prepared to go to war. As demand in the local housing market increases substantially on an almost monthly basis, so, too, does the number of bidding wars. Graham Jones, a Re/Max Hallmark agent who has worked in the industry for 25 years, just sold a house in a bidding war that netted his clients a substantial profit. Their Richmond Hill bungalow was listed for $899,000. There were nine bidders and the property sold for $1.43 million. He compares the sale to “winning the lottery” for his clients. “It was underpriced a little bit to set up the bidding war, but still, it set records all over the place,” Jones said. “We had three bidders that were just beating the living daylights out of each other. We didn’t know where they were going to stop. It’s a nice home, but it’s a 65-year-old, 900-square-foot bungalow on a 50-foot lot. They (sellers) are so happy. I can’t even begin to tell you. They’re retiring and going to buy a piece of property up north and build a house. They got way more money in their pocket than they expected. They’re absolutely thrilled. Every deal I’ve done in the past two years has been multiple offers.” It seems this story is becoming commonplace. The Toronto Real Estate Board reported a 12.6-per-cent increase in home selling prices in April, when compared to the same period last year. The average home sold for $766,472 in Toronto in April, compared to $690,658 in April 2015. Throughout the rest of the GTA, average prices also increased from $605,336 in April 2015 to $724,235 this year. The increase is blamed on several factors. Interests rates

WEAK CANADIAN DOLLAR Compared to other world currencies. Right now, our dollar is trading at about 80 cents against the American greenback. The British pound and the Euro are also highly valued against our money. That allows foreign investment in the GTA market. “They’re purchasing a $300,000 property for $220,000 US,” Royal LePage sales representative Wasim Jarrah said.“To them, that’s a great deal.”

INVENTORY SHORTAGE are at or near record lows, the Canadian dollar lags behind other world currencies and, historically, GTA real estate is a relatively safe investment gamble. “Our real estate, in world dollars, is still much cheaper than in Washington or London,” Mark Weisleder, a partner in Vaughan’s RealEstateLawyers.ca LLP firm, said. “Even if it’s increased, it’s a good investment for foreigners.” Immigration does play a role in driving the market upward. The Ontario government estimates about 100,000 immigrants move into the province each year. Many of those people settle in the GTA. Between Aurora in York Region and Innisfil in Simcoe County, there appears to be an influx of Chinese buyers. “They can move their family here while still finding affordable housing,” Royal LePage sales representative Wasim Jarrah, who works out of an office in Aurora, said. “Chinese buyers are savvy. They like to negotiate and feel like they’ve got a good deal. It’s the same thing that happened to Markham, and for the Italians in Vaughan. It’s a very healthy real estate market. Even when people are purchasing in multiple offers, they’ll realize a profit if they stay in their properties for up to three years. The (current) sellers are making a sizable profit as well.” There’s also a significant lack of inventory — a combina-

INTEREST RATES AT HISTORIC LOWS They’re helping to stabilize the economy and make home purchases much more appealing, Asensio said. “The real estate market is going to stay nuts for a long time yet,” he said.“I don’t know whether there’s a need to slow it down.”

BIDDING ABOVE ASKING PRICE In northern York Region and some areas of southern Simcoe County, for example, Chinese buyers are bidding amounts substantially above asking price. Wasim Jarrah estimates Chinese bidders account for 60 per cent of people placing bids in multiple-offer situations in the area. According to the Ontario government, about 100,000 immigrants enter the province each year. EW

We’re not building new homes fast enough to support demand. Also, Baby Boomers are choosing to stay in their homes, rather than downsize. “If you look at the number of housing starts compared to population growth, we’re just not building homes fast enough,” Joe Asensio, of JN Asensio Realty Inc., said.

York Regional Police says the force is once again disappointed by the results of a weekend RIDE campaign. This past weekend, 13 drivers were arrested from Friday through to Sunday and charged with alcohol and drug-related criminal driving offences. Of the 13 arrests, four were a result of collisions. Officers conducting RIDE spot checks and general patrol resulted in another five impaired drivers and four of the arrests were as a result of concerned citizens calling 911 to report possible impaired drivers. On Saturday, shortly before 7:30 p.m., York police responded to a collision between a motorcycle and a car on Metro Road and Spring Road in Georgina. The rider of the motorcycle, a 47-year-old Georgina man, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car, 20-year-old Justin Clodd, from the Township of Perry, was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with impaired driving cause bodily harm, over 80, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession

of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. On Sunday, shortly before 1 a.m., officers responded to a possible impaired driver, called in by a citizen in the area of Hwy. 7 and Hwy. 427 in Vaughan. When officers arrived, they located three vehicles, including the suspect vehicle that had been involved in a serious collision. As a result, two people were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries. Brampton resident, 56-year-old Harjit Singh Gill, has been charged with impaired driving cause bodily harm and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle cause bodily harm. Also on Sunday, shortly before 6 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle collision in the Major Mackenzie Drive West and Timber Creek Boulevard area in Vaughan. A red Jeep Wrangler was in the middle of the roadway after striking a hydro pole, police said. The driver of the vehicle, 23-yearold John-Michael Cimicata, was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Evacuation highlights what’s most important in life

Doctors’ individual rights count, too

O

n days such as Mother’s Day, my birthday, or Father’s Day, our children often ask “What would you like? What do you need?” The truth is that I want nothing more than I already have. Another technological gadget or piece of jewelry does not fulfil me in the same way that creating memories with my family does. So, this past Mother’s Day, my daughters did exactly what I asked for: they made me something. I heard what sounded like sawing coming from behind the closed door of Chloe’s room in the days leading up to Mother’s Day. What was presented to me was a very creative and colourful piece of cardboard, cut to specifications and wrapped in bright pink duct tape with tin foil letters cut out to create the word MOM on it. Her Do-It-Yourself project, a template on which to fold T shirts, was not only thoughtful but impressive, too. This, along with a handmade card, made me swell with love and pride. My other daughter, Talia, purchased a beautifully bound red book titled “I love you Mom. Here’s why....” and then spent days thinking and writing about all of the things she appreciates about me, along with a collection of memories that have created a strong bond between us along the way. I couldn’t have asked for anything more heartfelt or special. It was with these treasured items of love at my side that I watched footage of moms and dads, grandparents and children, who had to flee from their homes as fire ravaged everything they had worked so hard to create over the years in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Time and time again in news stories I heard many evacuees speak about how grateful they were to have, at least, their families by their sides and how material possessions appeared so trivial next to knowing the people they love are safe. So, it may not have been their finest piece of art work, but rather

Sara Dimerman their child’s favourite hand drawn picture, framed on the wall, that they gathered in their haste to leave. And it may not have been an expensive camera, but rather a stack of photo albums, reminding them of precious memories over the years, that they packed into their trunks as they left their driveways en route to who knew where. One woman pulled a copy of Robert Munsch’s book, Love You Forever, from the trunk of her car to show a reporter. Apparently her mother had given it to her on a recent visit home. This got me thinking about what any of us would grab if we had five minutes to flee our home. Aside from my family and pets, I wondered if I should actually put my most treasured items into a box in the garage or close to the front door, so that if the time ever came, I wouldn’t have to think about which room or cupboard to find them. I already have all of the videos I have taken of our children and family over two decades on DVDs in a box. There are too many photo albums to grab, but perhaps I would take the two birthday albums for each of our daughters, which show how they have grown from year to year, along with all of the pictures of their friends at the time. In difficult days, when the world comes together to help fellow human beings cope with such devastating loss, it’s hard not to take stock of one’s own life and reflect on what is really most important. Thornhill’s Sara Dimerman is a psychologist, author and mom to two daughters. For more advice, connect at www.helpmesara.com or on Twitter @helpmesara.

Re: Right-to-die bill about individual rights, letter by Marnie Kolah, May 19. I was seriously offended by this letter. Whether or not the letter writer agrees with St. Joseph the Worker parishioners delivering 1,700 letters to MP Peter Kent is irrelevant. She pays lip service to the fact that it is an “individual’s right to end his/her life” and that it is a private and personal decision. If she really believed that, she would see no wrong in people delivering letters that reflect their “personal” opinions. Ms Kolah thinks parishioners should go to confession because they are “smug and self righteous”. What nerve to make such a determination without even knowing any of these people. Could she not think some of these 1,700 parishioners have watched their loved ones “waste away in intense discomfort and pain”? I signed the petition and I have, unfortunately, watched more than one of my loved ones go to their death “writhing” in discomfort and pain. Not a one asked to be assisted in dying an early death. One, a few days before his death, cursed God when asked by his priest to accept the fact that he was going to die soon and to make his peace with that. He said as long as he had a breath, he would not ask God to take him. My niece, just hours before her death, vowed to me that she was going to beat the cancer that was eating her body. I have many other examples like this and, I’m sure, so do others. Seldom do people who are dying ask God (or some other deity in whom they believe) to take them away from their loved ones and their life.

Most petitioners feel that the “right-to-die bill” is a fait accompli and we respect the fact that it is a private and personal decision. What most of us found difficult to understand (over and above the fact that in spite of not being “biblethumpers,” we believe killing someone is a sin) is that doctors will be asked to recommend someone to patients to help them die if they won’t do it themselves. Where is the individual’s right in that? If a doctor — whether for religious, moral or other reasons — believes assisted dying is wrong, why should the law make them do it or force them to recommend someone who will? Does the letter-writer not see that as being wrong?

Wayne Emerson really wants to get the police budget in order, perhaps he should investigate why we have a policy of only one officer per vehicle and that multiple vehicles have to respond to apparently every situation. On the Victoria Day weekend, I witnessed three vehicles respond to an ambulance call at one of the Promenade condos and two for what appeared to be a simple traffic stop on New Westminster. That’s a lot of excess cost for what probably could have been handled by one car for each situation with two officers per vehicle.

Well known mental health advocate Susan Inman will be the keynote speaker in the next Home on the Hill Lecture Series presentation in Richmond Hill. Inman, a writer and parent, will focus on the different needs experienced by a family coping with mental illnesses, and why many families do not have what they need. The presentation — What Families Need from the Mental Health System — will be introduced by Dr. Ivan Silver of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), and will offer strategies on how families and the community can work together to improve mental health services.

Inman’s book, After Her Brain Broke, Helping my Daughter Recover Her Sanity, which describes caring for a struggling family member, has helped create awareness of mental illnesses, as have many of her articles for Huffington Post Canada. Her book has been recommended by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and further praised by many organizations advocating for individuals and families coping with mental health issues.

can’t finance to these levels. We’ve turned offers away that were astronomical for the value of the area. That’s a hard decision. The need and the greed of the seller factors in.” Bidders also often exclude some standard conditions from their offers, including home inspections. The decision is putting purchasers at risk. “It’s a scary thing,” Weisleder said. “The pressure is high to put in an offer without conditions, in order to win the bidding war. When you put in an offer without conditions, you could have all kinds of serious problems with the property condition after closing, which could cost who knows how much money to fix.” The market is also forcing first-time homebuyers to look for cheaper properties farther north, in municipalities such as Barrie, Essa Township, Georgina and Innisfil. “Newmarket is not a first-time homebuyer community anymore,” Jarrah said, noting the market should stay hot for another 12 to 18 months. Others aren’t sure the market will slow down by then. “Are we overpriced?” Asensio said “Realistically… not really. We’re still one of the most affordable areas in the country. I don’t believe we’re in a bubble and I don’t foresee that prices are going to drop anytime soon.” While rising home values may excite potential sellers, they need to remember that other houses are also jumping in price. So, the hike may negate some of their gains when they try to purchase another property. Sellers should consider buying the next house first, before listing their current property — a decision that will ensure a smoother transition between homes. Buyers, meanwhile, are advised to stay within their means, even if that forces them to walk away from a bidding war. “Don’t sacrifice everything to make that mortgage payment,” Weisleder said.

My hair was thinning! Maya was shocked by the change in her hair. Fullness and volume were replaced by thinness and lifeless hair. She had to do something.

T

he hair I found in my brush, in the shower and on my cardigan was unfamiliar to me. It was thinning like never before. How could this be happening?

I had to do something I found out my mother experienced the same problems when she was younger, and she simply accepted her fate. But so much of my personality is in my hair, and I did not want to have the same problems. I had read about the importance of hair nutrients, so I decided to focus on the inside rather than on the outside, and went looking for a good supplement. D

My hair feels full and healthy and even my nails feel much stronger. The shedding has also almost stopped. Avigayil Margolis capped 14 years of Jewish education with an intense study/competition that centers on Israel. Margolis, a Grade 12 student, won the competition Project Israel, run out of Tanenbaun Community Hebrew Academy’s north campus in Thornhill. As part of this contest, students learn about and are tested on topics relating to Israel (history, Zionism, personalities, topography, achievements and more). Participants take part in a series of stages, ranging from knowledge tests, to creative stages, during which students present art or videos on topics they learned about. Organizers said Project Israel was created because there is simply not enough time for extra in-depth coverage of Israel, since CHAT students already have a busy academic schedule. Margolis was awarded two tickets to Israel, courtesy of EL AL. Second place went to Ryan Ripsman, Ben Shore was third, Jonathan Zrihen fourth, Kira Brown fifth and Melanie Shimov sixth. — Simone Joseph

Cherry Webster loved by students, friends

By Teresa LaTchford

herry Webster’s notes will continue to ring true in the hearts of those who knew her. To some, she was a loving wife and devoted mother of two. To others, she was a dedicated teacher and the community will remember her forever as the organist who played at the Ray Twinney Complex during Newmarket Saints games. She was an energetic and encouraging spirit who will never be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to have crossed her path. “She was a unique person,” her husband, Bill, said. “She was mystifying, talented, smart, funny and shared my love for music.” They first met at the “Jolly” Miller Tavern in Toronto more than four decades ago. Both were musicians and teachers who were just beginning their careers. It was only six months later that the couple married. In 1974, the couple moved to Newmarket, a move they called the great white north at the time. Over the years, Cherry taught primary and junior grades, music, special needs children and French at Park Avenue Public School, at schools in Aurora, but spent the majority of her time at Prince Charles Public School in Newmarket. “The students who needed most, just gravitated toward her because of her empathy and because she was so giving,” he added. “She was just an amazing person in everything she did.” Cherry juggled her teaching

career, raising her children, Darryl and Kim, and teaching private piano lessons. On top of that, she decided the Newmarket Saints games needed a certain spice so, for every game, she would lug her equipment, plus her children, to the second floor of the recreation complex to rev up players and fans. “I still meet people today who knew my mom as the Leafs’ farm team organist,” Darryl said. “I have been to some faraway places and people know who my mother was; a beautiful person.” But closer to home, he remembers his mother being someone who always put everyone else first, almost to a fault, as he wonders if she ever had time for herself. When he was 12, he attended a goalie school in Orillia, but was too shy to spend the night at the camp, so his mother crammed his hockey equipment into her IROC Z28 at 5 a.m. three times a week to allow him to have the experience. “She would encourage any idea we had,” he laughed. “I wanted to travel with a band that made no money and she never discouraged me.” When his sister, Kim, moved to Manchester, Cherry never discouraged her and remained close with her daughter. Cherry always enjoyed travelling to see her daughter and felt very much at home there. Her empathy for others began well before her family was established or before she became a teacher. When her classmates were choosing to go to Paris as part of French studies, she went to Africa where she could do mission work on top of teaching French.

In addition to her other talents, Cherry had written a children’s book, but had never done anything with it until she was diagnosed with a brain tumour that claimed her life in April. With help from her family, the book, The Amazing Adventures of Squeaky and Vashy, has been published. The family is currently working on organizing a life celebration to be held in August. “We want the celebration to be as unique as she was,” Bill said. It will be a celebration with music and memories to pay tribute to a life that was taken too soon. Cherry Webster was a bright light in many people’s lives:

Celebrate a life well lived!

“Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”

“She was my first teacher when I started at Prince Charles, she made me feel comfortable and she was one of the best teachers I had. “I still think of her often and, like a lot of others, have mentioned I, too, still use her songs to help aid my own children in their mathematical journey.” —Melanie Walsh-Boland “I wouldn’t have survived my first few years of teaching at Park Avenue without her as a mentor and shining guide. She was such a dedicated and hard-working teacher. Her sensitivity to others, enthusiasm, positive approach, creativity Your community newspaper is celebrating the achievements and contributions of everyday, ordinary people, who have affected the lives of others in extraordinary ways. and kindness were appreciated by everyone.” —susan collett “Mrs. Webster was my Grade 4 teacher and a teacher I will never forget. I still remember, to this day, the songs she taught us to help with math. “I have also used these to help teach my children. I remember days of going to the Newmarket Saints hockey games and being more excited that my teacher was the musician playing on her keyboard. Thank you for the wonderful memories. You will never be forgotten.” — Jennifer Gillison
