A multi-faith conference in York Region Sunday shared a vision of women coming together to create peace in society. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association hosted the conference at its national headquarters on Jane Street north of Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan. With the theme “Peace on our planet — our contribution,” the event drew more than 300 women from different religious, cultural and social organizations from Vaughan, Bradford, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, King City, Thornhill, Markham and other communities. The goal of the conference was to promote peace, foster relationships among different groups and push back against stereotypes associated with Islam, Amtul Noor Daud, national president of the women’s association, said. While terrorism is committed by extremists, Islam is a religion of peace, she said. “This is a very important message today because Islam is being associated with terrorism and that is absolutely the wrong portrayal of Islam and we, as followers of Islam, we want to show the world the true picture that is associated with absolute peace,” she said. “The religious aspect of Islam is truly beautiful. It is just peace and love and kindness and mercy for everyone.” A conference organized by women for women sends a meaningful message, Daud said.

Amtul Noor Daud, national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association, sits at the podium during Sunday’s annual Peace Conference. It attracted 300 women from Markham, Vaughan and across York, discussing how women from different religions all want peace. “The image that society and some media have (is) that Muslim women are oppressed, they can’t do anything, they have no choice of career, they can’t live in society while being oppressed,” the Vaughan resident said. “Being a Muslim organization, we want to show the world that yes, we can do everything within the teachings of Islam, within the boundary of Islam, having our veils on, we are nothing less than women of other religions.” Association representative Sadaf
Shah, a resident of Bradford, also spoke of Islam as a religion of peace. “Islam teaches us that unless man learns to live at peace with himself and his fellow beings, he can’t live at peace with God,” she said. “A Muslim can only be considered best in the sight of God if he or she can be of service to mankind.” However, if Islam is about peace and serving humanity, then why are some Muslim groups around the world engaging in brutal acts of terrorism, Shah said. “Terrorism is a global problem

Finally, Bowman not only began to recover and returned to work, she started training to compete in last year’s firefighters’ competition. Last year, she claimed her 16th world championship in five years, making her the most victorious competitor in the challenge’s history, She also became the first female firefighter to break the two-minute mark, with a time of 1:58. “After years and many days of training, I finally achieved this goal of mine, to break this two min-

became a nightmare of bullying and threats. At times, she even feared for her life. “I had gone from a confident, beautiful woman full of life and full of joy to a dull, drab, non-descript middle-aged woman,” she said. After 20 years, Helen decided to leave her marriage — “My escape was one of the most dangerous thing I have done in my life,” the mother of two said. Helen got counselling and turned to the Women’s Centre, where she participated in the enterprising careers program. She is now pursuing a career as a translator and writer. “My goal here today is to inspire you to believe and follow your dreams,” she said.

really, at the end of the day, whether it’s the whole world or within our families, we all want and strive for the same thing. We want peace,” she said. Vaughan Councillor Rosanna DeFrancesca said she was touched by the number of women participating in the conference. “I think as women, we have an important role in society to educate our children, our communities and our nation, at the end of the day, about peace and love and faith,” she said. “Women need the support of other women and I encourage all of you to support each other because we deal with so many issues in our community and some of them are so similar. At the end of the day, we are all somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister, we are mothers, we are wives and we share the same challenges in life. So, let’s stick together.” DeFrancesca said she agreed with another speaker who said women will one day be the true leaders of the world. “I agree with her 100 per cent, because we have passion, compassion and love in our hearts,” she said. “As Canadians, we are so blessed with peace in our country and diversity. And it’s important to educate our children that this peace and diversity and togetherness is not always shared around the world and that we have to strive and we have so much more work to do to achieve the greatness we have in this country in every country around the world.”

Being the closest female ever to get there, I could have easily given up. Sometimes in life, you don’t know why things happen. But we learn more from our failures than we do from our successes. You know what? and needs to be studied in its larger perspective. Unless we understand the forces behind the violence, we will not be able to understand why some Muslim groups and states are turning to terrorism to achieve certain objectives,” she said. She referred to research showing suicide bombings have more to do with secular and strategic goals to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from territories that terrorists consider their homelands, than they do with Islamic fundamentalism or other religions. “Islam is as far removed from terrorism as light is from darkness. It is not the exploiter, but itself is being abused by internal or external (groups) for political interests,” Shah said. The conference was impressive, especially as it was held only two

York Regional Police have charged three men accused of stealing two luxury vehicles from the same Thornhill home last week. Officers were called to a home in the Bathurst Street and Rutherford Road area at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 3. A black Mercedes S55 and a white Lexus LX450 were left warming up in the driveway, using the push-start ignition. The suspects were able to enter the vehicles and drive away, despite not having the
keys, police said. Three men face charges of theft of a motor vehicle, obstruction of a peace officer and possession of property obtained by crime. A 21-year-old Brampton man is to appear in a Newmarket court Friday. Two Mississauga men, ages 25 and 23, are to appear in court March 24. York Regional Police say officers regularly respond during the winter months to stolen vehicle incidents where cold weather has prompted drivers to warm up their vehicles unattended. Police remind drivers to never leave their vehicle unattended.

Why should York keep waiting for subway?
Arena reports echo citizen concerns
L
eave it to Canada’s largest national newspaper to pooh-pooh the idea of a Yonge subway extension line to Richmond Hill in a Monday editorial. The Toronto Star called the seven-kilometre link from the Finch terminal station to Richmond Hill, “an exercise in folly” and Toronto Mayor John Tory has told CP24: “We just can’t do it. How irresponsible would it be to have the trains, when they get to Finch, be so full, no one can get on?” For good measure, Toronto Transit Commission chairperson and Toronto councillor Josh Colle chimed in: “We’re nowhere near being in the position to extend Yonge north. It’s just not feasible right now.” The key words Colle said were “right now.” While a group of 16 York Region mayors, councillors and senior staff went to Ottawa to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week to push for infrastructure funds — as is their responsibility to the citizens of York Region — anyone who is expecting immediate action “right now” on the Yonge Street extension is dreaming in technicolour. There would be a ton of work to do before shovels could hit the ground on such a massive project. Consider, for instance, how long it’s taking to get the subway to Vaughan from Downsview station. The conception for the project was drawn up round the turn of the century and if it opens as scheduled, we’re looking at about a 17-year timeline. So when Colle says “right now,” does he mean within a decade or so or realistically speaking, are we talking closer to 20 years? If it’s the latter, which is far more reasonable, consider the number of transit projects that will be completed in Toronto by then. For starters, the Eglinton crosstown LRT will have long been in service. Then, you’ll have the Scarborough subway extension. Presumably, Mayor Tory’s Smartrack plan will have been implemented, and if all goes according to plan,
Tim Kelly by the early 2030s, it’s possible the downtown relief line might be underway or even finished. The Star argues all of these Toronto transit lines must be in place before a link to Richmond Hill should be considered. Why not proceed with planning, engineering and construction on a Richmond Hill line while all of these other projects are in the works? Why must it be an either/or proposition? Given the length of time complicated, massive transit projects with inevitable delays take, surely several can be underway simultaneously. The other important point is that improvements in subway efficiencies should mean more trains can run each hour, providing more capacity on each line and more passenger service. The TTC is working over the next three years to upgrade its 60-yearold system so that trains will run far more efficiently. That can only make the system smoother, more reliable and more open for expansion in the future. As gridlock on our roads continues to get worse over the next decade while our population grows, the call for transit solutions will only get stronger. The goal is to get people out of their cars and off the roads. The Star seems to think transit’s the ideal solution for Torontonians but, evidently, it thinks those of us in York Region can wait and wait and wait some more. But there’s no reason to wait indefinitely. Let’s get started on a Yonge line extension to Richmond Hill so we can ride the Rocket within 20 years.
Thanks to Councillor Karen Rea’s perseverance, reports on the proposed arena have now been made public. The full set of reports may be viewed on her website: http://karenrea.ca/ arena-documents/ The City of Markham hired the services of well respected consultants for the purpose of checking the feasibility of undertaking a project of this size in 2011-2012. Needless to say, the results of the reports have only recently been released. It was during this struggle over the arena, that a concerned group of citizens was born, Markham Citizens for Responsive Government or MCCRG. Members of MCCRG and other concerned residents were alarmed at the number of red flags appearing, as citizens continued questioning the promises being made, while researching other such existing models in the world. Unfortunately concerns such as: “financial risks,” “due diligence,” “cash flow burden,” “debt to Markham,” etc. were not taken seriously by many in council, as these issues were relentlessly pursued during presentations in the chambers. Interestingly enough, as I read through the reports, I see that many of the concerns raised all along by citizens were also addressed by the consultants, who were paid to write the reports. A few examples would include: “no supporting documentation, ... are not useful forecasts ... make unrealistic assumptions ... projections deemed likely too aggressive ... no property taxes to be paid to the city...” etc. Upon reading the reports, you will soon understand why they were not made public, prompt-
ing Ms Rea to go through the Freedom of Information route in order to facilitate the release. If you are looking for a quick read, please refer to this link for a summarized version, completed by MCCRG: http://mccrg.org/ secret-reports/ Remember, Markham’s taxpayers paid more than $700,000 for these reports. Checking it out will be time well spent exercising your democratic rights and informing yourself.
M. Ferguson Markham
Election reform long overdue Election reform in Canada is long overdue. It is surprising to note the provincial, federal and the municipal lawmakers want to be in office, election after election. As a concerned citizen, I strongly feel the lawmakers should have only two terms, fulfilling the duties as the elected representatives of the people.

The most powerful nation and our southern neighbour United States of America has the office of the elected president only for two terms. I do not understand why our lawmakers do not want to relinquish office after two terms. The federal and the provincial governments should enact laws to limit the terms of the lawmakers. The change of administration will bring in new ideas and reform that will enrich the country and prosperity of the people.

When Rabbi Avraham and Goldie Plotkin said in the 1980s they wanted to establish an orthodox synagogue near Bayview Avenue in Thornhill, there were naysayers. “They said there’s no chance you’ll ever succeed,” Rabbi Plotkin recalled Tuesday. The Plotkins left New York back in the mid-80s, intent on their mission to reach out to young, unaffiliated Jewish families in northeast Toronto. The Plotkins started out by knocking on doors, trying to build up a congregation from the dining room of their Thornhill home. From there, they moved to a rented space in an industrial area on Markham’s Guardsman Road, eventually relocating to a permanent home in a building on Green Lane, east of Bayview Avenue. (The first phase of Chabad Lubavitch of Markham was built in 1997). Leaders at other synagogues had advised the Plotkins to instead open a synagogue farther west on Bathurst Street, known to be a popular hub for Jewish families. However, three decades later, Chabad Lubavitch of Markham, located near Bayview Avenue in Thornhill, is home to about 365 families. The community is marking its 30th anniversary with A Gala Banquet: A Tribute to our Parents on Monday, March 21. The Chabad synagogue is home to a nursery and Hebrew school, youth programs, and a selection of classes and special events. Some may ask why this synagogue has thrived, while some GTA congregations dwindle? “We’re open, not judgmental,” Rabbi Plotkin said. The synagogue also managed to tap into the burgeoning immigrant community in Thornhill that was looking for a place where they

Chabad especially succeeded in attracting congregants from a South African background. About 70 percent of its membership is made up of South African ex-patriots. “The shul was useful in integrating us into Canadian society,” says synagogue president Paul Klein, who moved to Canada from South Africa himself during the mid1970s. Two years ago, the synagogue re-invented itself with a renovation of its building that included adding a kitchen and expansion of the main hall by 50 per cent. Rabbi Plotkin is proud and optimistic about what he and the community has achieved — despite doubts from early naysayers. “I think we proved them wrong. We’re thrilled we succeeded,” he said.

Markham says no to freight train reroute The City of Markham has given the thumbs down to plans to reroute freight trains from the existing Toronto rail line to Markham. Mississauga, Milton, Cambridge and Toronto commissioned a study into separating freight and passenger rail traffic along the Milton and Kitchener GO lines, which currently use the CP and CN rail lines. In order to provide all-day GO train service, it was proposed to reroute CP freight traffic to the existing CN York corridor, which cuts through Markham. The rerouting would mean more noise, dust and dangerous goods passing through. “We unequivocally do not support this,” said regional councillor Jim Jones. “We won’t be the guinea pig.” The city also called on Metrolinx to extensively consult with affected municipalities — Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill — prior to any studies. The city’s stance will be sent to local MPPs, MPs, the provincial minister of transportation and Metrolinx. — Amanda Persico

Gianluca Cellucci: a family remembers Richmond Hill man was applying to be a police officer when life cut short BY TIM KELLY

om misses his hugs. Joanna Liokossis tears up as she talks about how her only son, Gianluca Cellucci, knew “when something wasn’t quite right with me.” Sitting in the Richmond Hill family home just weeks after Gianluca, 22, was stabbed to death in a Vaughan parking lot in the early hours of Feb. 7 – a Richmond Hill man is facing second degree murder charges – Joanna talked about the mother-son bond they shared. “I’d be standing there at the sink and he’d come up behind me, wrap his arms around me and say, ‘What’s wrong Mom?’” She said just days before he died, the young man came home from work late one evening. “He did something he used to do all the time when he was little. He lay down with me on the couch. I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ He said, ‘Nothing, I just want a hug, I just need a hug. Hugs are good.” I said: ‘Absolutely. Anytime. I’m here.” Joanna, husband Carmelo Cellucci and daughter Francesca lost a son and brother far too soon. “We, as a family, have been robbed of him as child, as a brother, as a nephew. But the community has been robbed of so much too,” Joanna said. Having just graduated from York University with a BA in political science, Gianluca was applying to be a police officer with the York force when his life was cut short. His parents and uncle, Cesidio Cellucci, talk about a young man with a great work ethic who began at the corner store when he was just 12. “He held down four jobs throughout his life and all the people he worked for contributed in some way to his funeral. That’s the impact he made on people,” Carmelo said. His sense of friendship, what he would do for a buddy, sticks out for his uncle who recalled a story that brought it all home. “Gianluca got up at 4 a.m. to drive an hour-and-a-half to a friend’s cottage because

Gianluca Cellucci’s work ethic, sense of responsibility and affection for his family are recalled fondly by his loved ones.
‘We, as a family, have been robbed of him as child, as a brother, as a nephew. But the community has been robbed of so much too.’ – Joanna Liokossis his friend’s boat was sinking. And this was in October. It was because his friend said, ‘I need your help.’ That’s just who he was,” Cesidio said. His mother remembers another time her son said was “not his finest moment,” but one that revealed his character. “There was an accident. They were tossing a football back and forth at a friend’s house and the football hit the TV damaging it. Gianluca insisted on paying for it. The very next day he went out and bought a new TV. He was 18. He bought it because the parents were on holiday and he said, ‘I don’t want them to come back and see this. There’s no reason they should have to pay for it.’ He always took responsibility and ownership,” Joanna said. The family members recalled Gianluca’s charisma and his devotion to family. “He never once missed a birthday, a Thanksgiving meal.
He would come downtown and visit me and I would think to myself, when I was 20-something, that was the last thing on my mind. Yet he made a point of it,” Cesidio said. Memories of Gianluca as a little boy have come flooding back to Joanna in recent weeks. “I remember one time he was on the couch, he had tied his blanket around his neck and he yelled out, I think it was ‘Superman,’ and he jumped from one couch to another,” she said. Another time, Joanna, who used to teach, took her two young children to school and told them when she was at school, she was not mom, she was Mrs. Lioskossis. “All of a sudden, I get this really strong hug. He just needed to make contact. That’s how he was. He was always very affectionate. Just a real sweetheart.” She will miss his hugs the most.
